I finally decided it was time to find a place closer to home to get my hair cut. Best haircut ever! I showed Leen a picture of a shaggy Bob Kelly Rippa was sporting., and that I previously had before I got lazy and let it grow out of control. She was a pro. I was a bit nervous when she pulled out this razor thing, but it was exactly what my bushy hair needed. No more Rosannadanna hair. Cut and styled for $25! The day before my appointment I had a friend I hadn't heard from in ages call me out of the blue requesting a cheap stylist. I told her I was coming here the next day. She ended up getting her hair cut here a few hours before me. She loved her cut. When I went to work the next day, a coworker asked where I went, and she came to Leen and loved her hair too! Please DO NOT get your hair colored here. I had black hair and asked for a subtle and natural-looking balayage and I showed her a picture. What I got was black roots with a harsh line where my hair was just bleached orange from the line down and it looked nothing like the picture. I asked Lynn how much for it and she said $130; not knowing at the time how this worked I paid $150 for a very botched job which she took without saying much else, and this was expensive for a student like me. She wasn't even honest to someone new to coloring hair like me, and didn't offer herself to fix my hair. I was really upset with how my hair turned out and I will never get this money back. My long, black hair looked far better before and I payed a lot of money just to get it completely ruined. I asked for a haircut, too, where I showed her the V-shape pretty layers in the same picture. She lazily told me "that won't look good with this color" and just gave me a blunt cut at the end of my coloring. In short, she did nothing like how I wanted (just what she wanted) and I payed a ton for it. She wasn't honest about what she could do as a job and didn't take her time. My hair just has all these orange chunks in it. read more

Lynn wasn't doing any fancy movement that most hair salon people do.. and this place is very humble.. nothing luxury.. and just simple interior. But I have to say I was very happy with my hair cut. Lynn did perfect layering and cut as I wanted. You just have to tell her what you want and Lynn delivers the hairdo as you ask for. For my hair cut (trimm and layering) with wetting (almost similar to shampoo but not using shampoo because I already washed my hair at home) and blow-dry, she charged $19. Just took my son there yesterday after one too many bad haircuts at a much more expensive salon in Bethesda. It's a no frills place - she works out of a modest room attached to her home. Haircut and shampoo was quite cheap ($20). Good availability, pleasant experience and my son and wife both loved the haircut. Remember it's cash only. Shampoo, cut, and blowout for $28, count me in! Leen is great - both her skills and customer service! I went in wanting a new look after 15 years of having the same long, layered hair. I brought in some pictures of short hairstyles and bobs à la Julianne Hough and Karlie Kloss (basically all the beautiful young celebrities that would look gorgeous in anything)... but still unsure of exactly what I wanted and not confident as to whether it would translate on me. Leen is very gentle and mindful of the customer. She could obviously read me and knew that, while I wanted a change, I wasn't sure if a short cut would look good on me. Every step of the way she checked in with me to make sure I was happy with where the look was headed. And she was conservative in cutting off the length to avoid ending up with a bowl cut up to my ears and instead taking the length up gradually. We had a nice little chat, she put me at ease, and now I have a lovely new look for the new year! I recently moved to Silver Spring and was looking for a good hair salon for a reasonable price. I am definitely happy to have found this place. Discover Hair Salon is conveniently located between downtown silver spring and 495. Also I love that there's ample parking right in front of the salon so I don't have to drive around the block looking for parking or pay for parking. I needed a basic trim and I got just what i asked for: a friendly, prompt, thorough, and a great overall service. I usually don't trust people with my hair (asian hair) but I'm really happy with the result. When I couldn't decide whether or not to layer my hair, Lyn gave me helpful advise based on my hair-type/length/wants. I also saw non-asian patrons come in after me so I think this place knows how to do a good job with all different hair types. The price was reasonable but they don't accept credit cards so remember to bring cash. Will definitely go back for my next haircut! read more

I don't review many businesses on Yelp, so that I'm reviewing Discover Hair Salon says something in and of itself. First, this place is a jewel. I've shopped at Giant on Flower and Arliss St. for years, and I never saw the little salon tucked back right across from it. I'm so glad I found it on Yelp! Also, it's a home-based business and not sketchy like some places in the Takoma Park, Langley Park, and Silver Spring area. Lynn makes you feel right at home. I came in wanting a cut and color, and I brought her a color disaster! Most of my hair was some kind of gold orange and the top was showing my light ash brown/dirty blonde roots as well as quite a bit of grey. How the two were possibly going to turn into one color was beyond me. But Lynn managed it! She took the bottom color off as much as she could, focused on my roots, and then colored my hair. Now it's a beautiful version of my base color but brightened up just a bit so it doesn't look dull. It's amazingly all one color. I can't tell you how happy I was with her work. Her cut was also fantastic. She was economical about it, went about it without all the drama you see at a salon, and in minutes, I had a great new haircut. My hair felt healthy, light, and shaped up. No fuss, no muss. When I asked her ideas about what to do with my hair, they seemed straight on. I'm not very girly about such things, so I trusted her, and I would again without compunction. BOTTOMLINE: She did a fabulous job, really talked to you about what you wanted but wasn't shy about suggesting something she thought would be more attractive, and was pleasant throughout the whole process. read more

I moved to Silver Spring two months ago and have had trouble finding a quality hair stylist. I no longer have to look anymore. Leen is an excellent hairstylist and offers wonderful prices. I am editing my review, because I feel I did not give enough credit for the fantastic cut I received from Lynn. Probably one of the best cuts I have ever received. And my hair is awfully difficult---very fine but tons of it. I brought in pictures, and Lynn knew just what to do to give me the shape I was looking for. This salon is also extremely affordable (I paid $16 for the cut and $49 for full highlights). I would still caution individuals looking for color services. The foil job was really very disappointing and left blotches of brassy color at the roots and horizontal stripes at the crown of my head. Unfortunately, I didn't notice this until I got home, then had to return the next day to have them fixed. Lynn was very willing to try to fix them, but I had a lot of anxiety about her approach. After having a few sections re-foiled with low-lights and highlights, I ended up leaving with slight improvement, but much lighter hair than I had desired and several horizontal strips remained in some of the under layers. Will be hard to pull my hair up. Still, the cut is great, and I'm sure those just looking for a cut would be thrilled by the results. read more

I tried this place twice, because of all the glowing reviews and the extremely low price ($16). The stylist is very careful about not cutting too short; she probably asked, "Is this OK?" about 15 times. I had to ask her to shorten the bangs several times. Then, at the end, she announced that she was going to "texturize" my hair, to take out some of the weight. I have very thick hair, so it made sense. BIG MISTAKE. She went through and randomly selected strands to cut with a razor. I ended up with single strands of hair of all different lengths sticking out from everywhere, even the top of my head. Fortunately, I haven't had to look nice very often in the past several months. I decided to try again, specifying that I did NOT want texturizing. She started out very conservative again, in spite of my asking for 2 inches off. She finally believed me, and stopped checking in every few snips. But then, she cut it in layers all around, instead of one length, so I ended up with ringlets all over my head, instead of waves! She even insisted on using that razor again, even though I told her what happened last time. She also offered advice for one stubborn strand that always sticks out. And repeated it, and repeated it, and repeated it. I tried to tell her that it happened even when my hair was completely wet, after a shower. But she kept admonishing me, telling me that I had to wet it. So I just agreed. But she kept right on saying the same thing again and again and again and again and ... (you get the picture?) Next time? I'm going somewhere else. Anywhere else. read more

I was looking for a new hairstyle before graduation and I'm glad I went to Discover Hair Salon. My friends commented on how nice my hair looked. Besides getting a nice haircut/perm, I enjoyed getting my head massaged during the hair wash. I liked how the hair salon is family owned, so the stylist is very personal with the customers compared to big chains. Plus, she charges less than the other salons for perms. What a find! Convenient to anyone in the 4-corners area or Takoma Park, Lene deserves to be very very busy (though then I might not be able to call her at noon and get a haircut, color and blow dry at 1!). I've been putting off getting my hair done for months (no time, too costly etc) and didn't want to show up at a function with women I haven't seen in a year looking like a witch. Googled haircuts in Silver Spring, read a few reviews and called Lene for a cut assuming that's all I could afford (I've been coloring my hair at home to save $). She ended up doing my color--with some subtle highlights even!--cut and blow dry for under $100! Anyone who visits salons around the DC area will recognize this as a very good deal!!! But even better than the price is how much I love my hair. The color is exactly what I wanted, and the cut and blow dry were excellent as well. Lynn is great. I am really picky about who cuts my hair but she is good, thorough, and cheap! I would recommend bringing a photo of the cut/style you would like. She can cut my husband's hair (Asian, balding, wavy), and my hair (White, thin, straight) so that is amazing as far as I'm concerned. I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 because she doesn't take cards, the parking is a bit rough, it's not really metro accessible, and she can take a while for a fairly straight-forward haircut. read more

Had my first haircut today. Cute little shop in a private home on residential street. Very quiet. No one else in shop but the woman who was getting her haircut before me and Lyn, the stylist. No crowds, loud music or pressure to buy expensive hair products. And Lyn was very attentive. She sat with me to introduce herself and then asked me what type of cut I wanted. She was very careful to cut it exactly that way. She was masterful and my haircut couldn't look any better--it is fabulous!! And, as an added bonus, the cost was EXTREMELY reasonable!
