I really love this place. I came here after the person I saw at BeScene studios canceled on me the day before my graduation when it had been on the books for months (Omg don't go there btw. That's a review for another day). My hair was so damaged, dry, and sad. I saw Bruno who was able to gently remove the old color, and put in a beautiful silvery lavender. I've seen him a bunch since then for haircuts, baliyage (or however you spell it), color, cut and a Brazilian blowout (chemical straightening, NOT the other kind of Brazilian.) I'm always so happy with my services, and they guarantee their work and will correct color if asked within 2 weeks. Bruno is amazing. He always gives me sick (a la 90s parlance) color. I usually get fantasy/unicorn colors and his actually last (which NEVER happens with purple). Plus, he's so nice! Y también, si hablas Español, puedes chismear juntos! So happy to have found this spot. Beautiful, wide open space with plants, cement and mirrors everywhere; somehow it all works. Crystal was easygoing and knew what to do; I wanted a healthy trim (about 2-3 inches off) and a blow out, which she enhanced with some casual waves curled in that looked great. Medium hair cut - $80 + tip via Venmo. After reading all the reviews, I was excited to go to Chaos for a change. The salon was airy and large. Hair wash was standard, no head massage. When I got in the chair, I asked for something different and was open to suggestion and left it up to the stylist. I ended up leaving the salon with the same style, just a trim. A little bit disappointed as I was looking for some change. I wished we discussed what we planned to do in more detail during the cut or what style would work best for me when I asked for suggestions. It was a good lesson for me. Talking about my experience here feels vaguely pornographic. I feel like I should be whispering. But where beautiful heads of Asian hair go, I ignore the complaints of my wallet and follow. And I don't regret a thing. Bring quarters/nickels/dimes for parking meters, and cash for the tip. Although I'm sure they were weirded out by me paying in rolled coins, I'm embarrassed yet glad that they found them useful for their motorcycles' parking meter. I managed to score a spot within shouting distance of the salon. 50 minutes passed between the moment I entered and the moment I left. Mike introduced himself, sat me down in a chair to have a look, and we took a minute to talk about what my limits were and what he thought I should go with. Shampoo guy smiled shyly and got to work. Happy scalp. Censored thoughts. No splashing. Tom's great but Mike is my go-to guy here. Snip snip snip. Very professional and careful work! Mild chitchat about travel, ink, whatever. Mike gave me bangs that were perfect as is and to grow into full sideswept fringe. He reshaped my hair just right for someone like me who's a wash-and-go half the week just to get that extra 15 minutes of sleep. Love the layers, grateful for the advice. Blowout was nice. After three years of long hair, I was ready for an update. I spent hours reading reviews of area salons and inquiring with friends and strangers for an amazing stylist. After all this chaos, Chaos Salon in Bethesda, MD was my savior. I knew the change I wanted to make so I made an appointment with Chaos owner Cao. On day of transformation, Cao took his time to discuss with me what I had in mind, (short bob cut), made his suggestions then went to work. I found my new stylist! Through the entire transformation, Cao provided me with suggestions and direction on how to manage and maintain my new fantastic haircut. Went yesterday- mid week - on a whim - was amazed by the ambiance- loved the decor and fun atmosphere and Halloween theme! The staff all looked like they were happy to be there - which is super impressive! But- hands down to Phoung - he was absolutely amazing and his attitude, attention to detail, and his ability to understand exactly what my 13 year old son wanted- without my son saying many words.... Stylist didn't know how to use scissors but even worse she couldn't handle the razor. After three attempts of begging her to follow our directions we gave up. I have tried self cuts (=comical disaster), bubbles, stylists in taiwan, top stylists in beverly hills, fobby rockville auntie stylists, edgy Japanese stylists, etc... and the words that come to mind are: mediocre. hackneyed. blah. So Mike gets Asian hair. And he gets youthful, fresh, unique styles too. He won't just offer you a bob or the same highlights you've gotten since 9th grade (unless that's what you ask for). And THE very best thing I love about him is that I can plop down in my chair and say "Please take care of thiiiiis" with wild hand gestures circling my head and he'll make my hair beautiful. It's like asking a chef to just cook you whatever he deems delicious and trusting he'll know exactly what to do. Our bridal party (not my wedding) spent what felt like all day Saturday at Chaos with the god of hair, Mike Cao, for up-do's. We already trusted him because we've seen what he can do with scissors, but this past weekend, we were holding our breath to see what he might do to get us ready for this wedding. I showed Mike a picture I found in the latest Martha Stewart Weddings - a simple and understated side bun with sweeping bangs. Mike worked with diligence and precision as he gathered each lock of hair and wrapped it around a focal point behind my right ear. And after about an hour, I felt like I'd been transformed! This was my first time here, i booked an appointment for my friend and I originally, but schedules didn't work out so we had to go separately, Toan was an amazing guy. He gave me excellent service and gave me the results I wanted. I came in for a conditioning treatment. I was given advice to maintain treatment and had a great conversation during service. I felt very welcome and appreciated as a customer. So I was confident to recommend and bring my friend here the next day. However it wasn't the same with my friend. She was booked with Thais. My friend wanted her lighten to an light ashy brown. Her hair was originally a hazel brown with black roots, but when the outcome was finished... there was no change in lightness other than her roots. I've attached the before and after pics for my friends service below. I was just disappointed on how one employee can just ruin the entire salon as a whole. My friend even gave her a picture to follow and was clear on willing to pay as much as possible to get the style she wanted in the picture. Overall, I wanted a place where there are talented employees as a whole that I can take my friends to get their hair done with me. Not just one employee. If I'm going to spend a lot of money on my hair, I should be getting the results that is worth the money not waste it. read more

The worst haircut of my life. I couldn't have easier hair to do, it's long and straight and I just wanted a trim. Thais, my hairdresser, proceeds to "layer" it, and thinned out my hair so much on the bottom while giving me tons of short flyaway hairs up top. What?? It's horrible and will take months to grow out. Now I just have permanent frizz and hair of a million different lengths. I have no idea how a hairdresser could screw up such a simple task. No wonder their women's haircuts are so cheap. After whacking a coworker with my ponytail at work and developing tangles behind my neck regularly from the weight of my hair shifting around the elastics, I decided it's time to part ways with waist-length hair and go for something shorter and more manageable. Once again, one of the only times I've ever had a haircut without immediately hating it and having to let it grow onto me. Charged me $140 for nothing. My hair was a tad lighter but not what I wanted. I should of said something but I just wanted to get out of there. I've been going to a different salon down the street and have been feeling like no one was listening to my descriptives: "An edgy, funky, bob.....that doesn't look like Kate + 8 from TLC". Tom listened. And he got it. My profile picture is not a current picture of my hair, but my haircut is so BAD ASS and so ME, that I'm completely hooked on Tom and Chaos Salon. I ended up going back for highlights, which of course, Tom rocked the blond highlights just in time for summer. Fantastic job! The actual salon is small, but edgy and cool. If I have the story straight, there are 4 or 5 stylists, and the 3 brothers own the salon, all of them have kids (and love to share pictures!), and all of them will talk to any client in the chair. It's a great vibe, lots of laughs, super friendly, everyone shares stories.....very down to earth. The only reason I'm giving it a 4 is because of the price. And really, most people could probably afford it, but my reality is that I AM a "Bethesda Mom" (the one I bitched about in the opening sentence) with 2 kids and a tight wallet. Haircut was $65 and highlights were $100....if I add in the tips (which I try to give 20%), it gets steep for me. But honestly, most salons in DC are way more expensive, so this is par for the course. Bottom line: These dudes listen to you! If you're looking for a trim or if you're looking for a drastic change (or don't want to look like a mom), this is the place. read more

This salon had me at hello... literally. I was having a hair crisis this morning after a bad dye job at another salon left my hair breaking at the ends. It was horrible! Deciding that since my hair was breaking and needed to be cut I figured I'd get another faux hawk instead of leaving my hair mid-grow out. After searching online I saw that Chaos had some good reviews, so I called the salon and spoke to the seriously fabulous and friendly receptionist (forget her name now) who was very understanding about said hair crisis. I asked her for a stylist who was good at faux hawks and she immediately said "Tom! He is the best." Unfortunately there weren't any appointments open, but she told me to come in and speak to Tom about fixing my hair. And maybe... just maybe... he could see me today in between appointments. I came in an hour later, spoke with Tom and after he finished with his client at the time I was sitting in his chair getting my hair cut. Even though I was a walk-in, Tom listened to my concerns and what I was looking to get out my hair. He even gave me some suggestions for different ways to style it. Long story short...
