I took my little sister from Big Brothers Big Sisters to the Young Writers Workshop at Discovery Green last Saturday and parents beware! First there was a reading of a poem that I think was supposed to inspire kids, but this is a dangerous poem, spewing communist ideals, for young people - it talks about not being scared of cops, staging your own rebellion and even ends with blasphemy. Every single child wrote about "breaking the rules" and this was very well received by the instructor. After the workshop I sat down with my little sister and told her that while she might break some rules, breaking the rules is always wrong and there are always negative consequences. I also explained to her that the last line of the poem is blasphemous and completely goes against God's word. I am shocked and disappointed that this is what Houston Public Library and Discovery Green are promoting, we will not be back and I would suggest to any parent to either not attend or to sit in on it so you know what is being taught. Perhaps we went on a very OFF week, but I am inclined to think this is the norm. read more

1.7 stars, but I'll round up because at least Houston tried. So I was really excited to visit Discovery Green for the first time with my boyfriend and dog but I left dissapointed. I thought it was going to be bigger and that there would be more things to see/do. But there wasn't. Shaded areas were lacking and their "dog park" was kind of a joke. But I do have to give props to the idea of this park. Yes they are trying to educate people about "going green" and yes it's a great place for kids to get out and be active and play but this place just wasn't for me. We walked around and visited the PODS which were semi-interesting, walked around the whole park , and attempted to play with the puppy in their dog park (epic fail) and all that took less than an hour. We planned to be here for 2 hours but I just couldn't see that happening. There was nothing to do! If you're going to build a park in Houston you're going to have to plant more trees. It is just WAY too hot in Houston to not have more shaded areas. The dog park wasn't really a dog park.. it was dirt encaged in a fence. The ground was gravely and hot so our dog didn't enjoy it at all.. and she was bored! Well so was I! So we left and felt really dumb for payiing for 2 hours of parking when we were there for all of 50 minutes. read more

A friend and I were late to the free kayak class @6:30 and pretty bummed out to learn it was full. (There is a lake....Kinder Lake and it's perfect!)We were quickly offered another option and that was to play Kayak Polo @ 7:30. Also free! Both were hosted by Bayou City Adventures, they have other events and classes all over the city. We've never kayaked before but he assured me it would be a lot of first timers. So we signed up! There was Zumba going on nearby so we watched as everyone energetically participated. The Lakehouse was closed, and I could've really used a beer for my nerves. I was really bad at it lol, my friend was really awesome (his first time kayaking also kinda jealous) but it was all good fun! Life vest (the water isn't deep at all don't need to know how to swim just stand), kayak, and paddle all free of charge. Met some pretty awesome people and will be back! Wednesdays 7:30pm to October. This is adults only, the class and polo, however kids kayak on the weekends. The Zumba class at 6:30 looked really fun! They also have yoga and so many other free events, classes and other lake activities such as paddleboarding! Join the mailing list and see what you like! First time today at the Discovery Green, and it was great.. The weather was good and it was a perfect day to be at the park.. In the vicinity of George R Brown Convention Center, Minute Maid Park, Toyota Center, and other corporate sky-scrapers, Discovery Green provides a nice environment to chill away from the regular parts of Houston. It is also close to other popular venues in downtown such as the Flying Saucer, Theater District etc. Good for a relaxing weekend after-noons.. read more

Love discovery green but do not roller skate there. The floor is terrible, some kind of grating. It has lots of areas with uneven ground that is easy to trip on and the skates and very uncomfortable. At $12 a person they could have done a bit better or at least brought in a better floor. read more

This place is great!! What an awesome place to take kids to just play and have fun. On a recent trip to Houston, TX. we took a break from our conference that was at The George R. Brown Convention Center that is located right across the street, the kids were able to let out all of that stored energy and have fun. There are places to eat, a playground, vendors and music! I have always liked Discovery Green. However, I just went to one of their IKEA Movie showings last weekend and was prompted to write a review. I saw E.T. on the big screen for free!! The lights of the downtown buildings were an awesome backdrop. And the croaking frogs in the litte lagoon really set it off. I enjoyed myself. I have also been to the free Zumba classes on Wednesday evenings, AND to the Grove restaurant. This is a very special place in the heart of Downtown and should not be missed! read more

I've been coming to DG for years but in that time I've seen the decline in services and visitors. I think its time to begin charging admission bc the caliber of people that visit this beautiful park has reached new lows. Trashy people, insolent youngsters and the homeless have made DG a bad experience. I am aware that this post makes me sound insensitive. Before you judge me, know that I am an Hispanic female that has lived in Houston for 36 years. All I'm suggesting is to bring DG to the respectable level it was when it first opened. I haven't been to Discovery Green, but I gave it 5 stars because it looks so nice and beautiful. I will visit Houston in late May (woohoo), it will be my first time in Texas, and I am looking forward to this trip. A visit to this park is definitely on the top of my list. Yes, I do love walks in the park, people watching, giving head rubs to dogs. I hope its Summer-like weather in late May. read more

I don't get what all the hype is about discovery green. It is a very small park, with lots of dirty wet kids running around! Ok ok, I really went for the farmers market on Sunday, and I was HIGHLY disappointed. No offense to the 5 vendors that were there, but the event was pathetic. There was only one stand that had mabye 4 baskets of fresh fruit and vegetables, the rest were some gluten free desserts, honey and some meet. I dont understand why Houston cant get its act together and get a good farmers market started. With so many people going to the park you would think that they could get more vendors there. A beautiful small downtown park with a wonderful view. There is always plenty of events and festivals going on here as well as extravagant decorations. Be sure to check for dates on cultural festivals and the ice skating rink in the winter time. Parking can be a little difficult but that pretty much everywhere in downtown. read more

Houston doesn't have many parks, but I like this one. It's located in downtown, so street parking or garage parking are the two options. I enjoy coming to this park with friends and family. They even do free yoga sessions during the summer and fall. read more

I kept hearing about this location and I wanted to check it out for my self with my family of course. It was cool, but smaller than what I expected( the stories told about it made it seem, larger than life, like Hermann Park) It is sandwiched between George R. Brown,and the downtown Hilton and Minute Maid Park. There is Kinder Lake it cute and quaint, it would have been more serene if it had ducks, frog or water wildlife. There isnt much green to speak of, there is a hilly grassy knoll above the Lake House Resturant, a few trees scattered thorugh that knoll, but thats about it. We went the weekend of April 6th when Shell was having their annual "Eco Marathon." we got to see energy efficient/ Green Technology racecars bulit and raced by the nation's brightest college and high school students going in to the field of engineering and technology, as well as International Students ( Brazil, China, South Korea). That was fun watching the youth excel, but it sucked when you had to walk all way around to get back to Discovery Green from George R Brown( everything was blocked off for the races) But as you are walking you notice a tiny pathway around the Green, which mostly the dog walkers and older runners were accessing( not a big enough trail way to get a good run/ walk in, because eventually you run into street traffic/crosswalks, most down town driverz flyYYYYYY!!! pass you without stopping not a good place to be if your in the zone) Highlights: Art Deco Statues/ Contemporary Installations/ Modern Architecural take a children's playground( the Museum District is still the best for Art watching). Kayaking in Kinder Lake for 5 bucks, get there early( first in line) you can kayak longer( normal 20 mins, we did it for 30mins) it is not as easy as you would think, wear easily drying clothes and shoes and socks and sunblock( or take an extra set clothing leave them in the trunk of your car, leave cell phones and electronic on the dock with tour guides) You will get wet!!!! only downside when your early the guides dont take the tour with you ( its all you and partner) they stand on the dock watching you paddle in a circle!!! We didnt eat at any of the restaurants at the Green, we walked to the House of Blues shopping area on Caroline Street and ate at Guadalajara' s TEX MEX Sidenote: alot of Construction on US 59 North/Downtown plan an additional 30minutes Parking: 10 bucks in garage or public lot! read more

Discovery Green is a nice park in the middle of Downtown Houston. There is a nice large pond to sit around and fountains to run around in. Unfortunately the view isn't awesome now with a ton of ugly construction around. They also do concerts in the park in the summer which is nice. read more

I took my family here during the holidays. It wasn't what I expected, in a good way. Go on Sunday's parking on the street is free but be mindful of rockets games or other events at Toyota center, that can make parking expensive and impossible. As long as they keep the park up and not let it fall like tranquility park did this will be an awesome place with some awesome scenery. read more

Today was our first time visiting discovery green. I have read that it is a huge pain in the butt to park, but totally worth it. Well, parking was easy. We immediately found a place to park that was close and decently priced. Once we got into the park, there was so many people. The child to adult ratio was about 20:1. The kids that were running around were very rude and unruly. I am a nanny. I know that "kids will be kids", but this was total crap. There were about 10 different daycare or summer programs there for field trips. The park itself is lovely, but we will not be returning. When there are places like discovery green that are FREE, people tend to ruin it for others. Maybe we came on a bad day, but it was pretty crazy. The staff here was very nice, but it's the people that visit the park that ruined it for me. read more

I'm here for Discovery Green Flea, a tiny flea market at Discovery Green. The vendors are definitely geared more towards women but it's still cool. There are food trucks if your hungry and there was a band playing for entertainment. read more

Ever since PokemonGo came out, I finally step foot here. I have never been to Discovery Green since I moved to Texas until now. Thanks to PG, I am finding myself good reasons to drive down here just so I can catch some PG and exercise at the same time. Currently we are still stuck in summer so it's still hot and humid outside even if it's 11pm. The park is nice and have a lot of monuments which means more PokeStops. As a community thanks to those who drop lures. It gives a reason for a lot of people to be at the park to catch Pokemon. Without this game I don't think I would have ever been able to experience this park. It is a fun place to take my dog. I can't wait until it is cooler so I can frequent more often. I just wished they had free parking, then it would give a better reason to come more. read more

Happy... happy... happy... happy..... I feel like Discovery Green is the precise personification of what Pharrell was singing about! If you are a kid, or a BIG kid, this open space of pure nature will be a place of absolute joy! You can run... around.... without bumping into walls. So simple. So necessary. Visually stimulating art, an ice rink, etc. Urban planning score! It's the non-park park, if you know what I mean. I think it's just as nice to visit at night, as it is during the sunny hours. Cool location, cool place, cool things to do, cool friend to the environment. Located in downtown, it's centrally located and easily accessible. Since it's opening, Discovery Green has been a host to many events, e.g. White Cane Day (to raise blind awareness), free concerts, big screen movie nights, yoga classes, festivals, and so on. In the winter months, it's home to a small ice rink. There are fountains that give off calming water ambient noise. Everything that was put into making this park is "green" (hence its name). It's a nice place to picnic, hang out, take your family. Houston needs to counter its reputation of being anti-nature and get more parks like DG! read more

I have been coming to Discovery Green for several years now pretty frequently. There is a ton of great events that take place here. However, the past year parking has become almost impossible. I decided to just pay the $20 to park in order to experience ice skating here. Dont get me wrong..the Galleria & Memorial City have pretty cool ice rinks, but there is something festive about skating outside. It was a pretty good experience. Luckily skates weren't wet on the inside. Be aware...the later in the day you rent... The more likely they will be wet!!! Rink was a tiny bit slushy in places. Music was good. There are employees that work for the Rink itself that "monitor". They seem to have a problem with people walking in areas with skates that dont have proper protective flooring. This is unrealistic, as it gets crowded. Either rope off those areas or make sure they are protected. Anything else just doesnt make sense! All in all...I got my winter feels. read more

I love parks and this one isn't too shabby. So happy when i heard they were building it. They have a mini dog park, restaurants, a lake, jungle gyms, and a large lawn. Everything you would want from a park right? In the winter you can ice skate here and in the summer sail remote controlled boats. On top of this, they have various events and stuff going on here. Pleasant on a nice day- a huge park with lots of people and children playing. There was a craft market going on with food trucks parked and a band playing, so it was nice to come out of the convention to that laid back scenery in a downtown location. There is plenty of space to roam and lots of interesting art sculptures around the park and hanging in the trees. Also a little lake and some charming cafes, even an ice rink during the particular time i visited. Parking is a biatch, as this is located in downtown HOU. its small but pretty. it has this really cool water fountain thing...it seems so fun if i was a child...or no one was around. there are shaded and grassy areas which is nice if you just want to hang out. i came for the korean festival so it was packed but cozy. can't wait to see what the next event is. read more
