I was looking for a specific tree, a Chamaedorea Plumosa aka Baby queen palm. I wanted this exact tree because it has thin trunks like bamboo, but fronds like a queen palm and it was PERFECT for my backyard and space. We only knew of 1 place in Vista who had these for sale. But right before we were gonna go to the original seller, I decided to check Craigslist for this tree and lo and behold Joe's ad was there selling these trees. So I called him and turns out he was closer to us, AND it was a BETTER price than the original place we were gonna to!! Aaaand he let us come in as early as 8am. He sells them out of his home, and what we appreciated most is that he helped us put them in our truck (because we had NO idea what we were doing). He also has a friendly cat. Just make sure you wear shoes with traction in the backyard as some areas are a little slippery. As others have said, I believe it was cash only. We bought 4 trees and use them as a privacy screen against a low fence. read more

We traveled 160 miles both ways yesterday to buy two three-trunk foxtail palms and and a rare Brahea Nitida palm since Joe is the only one in SoCal to offer exotic palm trees and espcially with a bargain price. Was so happy to see Joe's Craiglists post again as I was about to go to buy these foxtail palms at a nursery in Santa Ana the next day which does not offer 3-trunk foxtail palms (only 2 trunks) which we were looking for. Joe was nice and responsed extremelly timely on my texts and phone call. He helped to pick out the palms and put it in my trunk. Since my husband was on vacation from his insane work schedule, he decided it was time to beautify our back yard with some awesome tropical plants like palm trees and bamboo. We'd checked out some of the bigger, more mainstream nurseries during the previous year, and they left us feeling less than impressed. For starters, no one had Senegal date palms! Well, we knew we'd come to the right place when Joe Dombrowski, the owner of Discovery Island Palms, not only showed us Senegal date palms, but WAY more types of palm trees than we knew existed! My husband has done quite a bit of research on different plants, but he was still blown away by the variety, and after we made our purchase, he definitely went home feeling like he still had a lot to learn (in a good way). There are over 140 varieties of palm trees here! The plants are happy and healthy, and Joe is really nice. He's also amazingly knowledgeable. Compared to Evergreen Nursery (where they THOUGHT they might have certain plants in stock but weren't really sure and just waved us off in their general direction without help), Joe really knows his stuff. He knew where every plant was, its Latin name, if he had it in other gallon sizes, how long ago he'd grown it...pretty much, you could ask him anything about his plants, and he'd have an answer. I also really liked that Joe helped us load the plants into our truck. At other nurseries, we've been left to haul things away on our own. Joe helped us move the trees up hills, down hills, over some cool terrain ( he has a great piece of land), and into the truck. That's some excellent customer service! The nursery can be a little bit hard to find, but Joe is available by phone to help; just give him a call when you're in the right area. Obviously, you should make an appointment before showing up. The prices were very fair and we spent WAY less than we were expecting for some beautiful trees. I met Joe today. He is a wonderful host. Gave me a tour of Discovery Island Palms. The man has a hidden jungle behind the entrance. I mean all type of of palms. Joe is very knowledgeable in his trade. He even helped me out with several green thumb inquiries I had for him. I can't say enough of his business. The place is overwhelming with beautiful lush green palms and the like. Joe is a very nice person and extremely helpful. His prices? Just amaaazing! I was interested in a 5 and 1/2 foot tall B. Fenestralis he had in a 7 gallon pot. At a 7 gallon price! I also picked up an exquisitely gorgeous 5 gal B. Alfredii (Almost 4' tall). With the newest leaves fully pinnate! Both specimens are intensely green, have quite thick petiole stems and are a sight to see. I am also including one picture of a very small cubby corner portion of Discover Island Palms. His inventory is nothing less than incredible variety of strikingly green and healthy exemplars! Honestly, it's love at first sight. I left with a smile. I cannot recommend his business enough. I was at Home Depot in Oceanside while my wife had a doctors appointment. I was looking for a foxtail palm tree that we wanted to plant in our backyard. They had some very small palms, but I was looking for a little bigger established tree. Another guy looking asked me if I was looking for a good foxtail palm, and I told him yes. He said you gotta go see Joe at Discovery Island Palm in San Marcos. He sent me his link and I called him on the spot and he said he had 9 footers and to stop by on my way home. Well I did and he had the perfect size tree and was in great condition. Make sure you bring cash, as he does not take credit cards. I ran down to Wells Fargo and pulled out some cash, and he loaded the tree up in my truck, tied it down and away we went. I live in Temecula so I had a drive ahead of me, but he tied it in good and the tree was in great condition when we got home. I planted it right away and it looks great.
