It sort of just comes up as white mountains park. You pull into a parking lot and you walk about .25 of a mile and you begin to see little spots on the rocks where individuals and families are camped out or have their towels set up. There is a natural water slide with gentle rapids making it just the right amount of fun without being scary! My son LOVED IT. You can bring tubes or water toys- which make it great- I can seen kids as young as 1 going down! The only thing that made me nervous was kids falling & possibly hitting there head- because during my visit- we helped save a man who slid down on his but & hit his head and was knocked out cold face down unconscious in the water & we turned him over and he eventually came to! One of the members of our group also saved his son- who was just drifting really far away on his raft. The views and water are crystal clear and beautiful! This is a BEYOND BEAUTIFUL SPOT- a definite must see for locals AND TOURISTS! Just be careful because rocks can be slippery and it can be dangerous. I'd say to stick with groups & if you're going alone just make sure someone knows!

There is a small parking lot at the base (park next to the Lafayette Campground). My suggestion is to arrive early because it fills up. Plus it's always better to battle an uphill hike early anyways. Most of the hike is shaded, but be warned that it's pretty steep. You'll need to climb uphill for at least two miles before you reach the lake. Luckily the payoff is beautiful and you get to hike downhill the entire way back. #WORTHIT Once at the top you'll immediately have beautiful views of the lake, but make sure that you keep walking for another 10-15 minutes up the narrow trail. That will eventually lead you to a wider boardwalk area where you can lay out some towels, enjoy snacks and drinks and jump right into the lake. I'm glad we packed towels and beers because after the long steep hike I was more than happy to chill out with a drink. I honestly could've stayed all day and been content. Definitely add this hike to your list if you are in the area!

We were visiting Littleton beginning of November and spent our whole Saturday on different trails. We got to Lonesome Lake a little later in the afternoon. The parking lot was nearly full when we got there but the trails really didn't seem that crowded at all. The entire hike up is all uphill, but not too challenging. But once you see the lake at the top?? So incredibly worth the sore legs. It seriously feels unreal or from a photograph when you first see it. It was partly covered in ice but we were so heated up from the uphill trek. This lake must be pretty wonderful in the summer months when you are just drenched from the hike up and can cool off by jumping in the lake. Little tip, be sure to wander a little further once you get to the lake. You'll see a trail with wooden planks. We basically made our own little outcove off of the trail by the water so I am not sure what is alllll the way farther down that trail. We got there on the late side and didn't want to make the hike down in the dark so we only stayed for about an hour, but I honestly could have spent the whole day there. Bring snack, drinks, anything to make a supremely cozy stay at the top. If you are looking for the perfect hike, ya found it.

Happy Earth Day again. You thought I was finished? HA!…read more Words fail to describe my love of Franconia. I am a Dartmouth alum - not one of the rich ones lmao so I did not have a car at college. If I did tho, you couldn't have pulled me away from the beauty of the White Mountains. I am however one of the old alums so I remember when there used to be an Old Man of the Mountain before his nose fell off lol. Anyways, this place has my entire heart and I only share it with people I trust. I took my friend here for a weekend getaway of rustic camping and hiking last April and I can safely say she also fell in love. We ran up and down I-93, I showed her the remnants of the Old Man, we stopped by the lake (lord it was cold), then we went to the Basin - beautiful in ALL seasons - and hiked a trail on-site. God I love Franconia so much. If you haven't gotten the chance to visit please make it a priority. It's stunning in all seasons! Things to know: -you can access The Basin from either side of 93. If on the far side you just need to cross under the overpass. -The Basin is paved. There are some stairs to get a closer look but it is largely accessible to view. -Still snow in some sections in late April - you're ok without spikes imo -parking was still free as of last year

Rocks roots and…read more ruts Ripley Falls is a 100 foot high waterfall that takes on several different personalites. In the late summer and fall it is a quiet and well behaved little falls. A nice place to hike out with the kids, dogs and grandpa and have a picnic. However in the spring when the snows in the mountains start to melt it becomes raging torrent. The noise is actually deafening. In the winter in frequently freezes and huge icicles hang off it. The actually hike to get to the falls is only a half a mile and in the proper conditions is quite easy. However the trail frequently is wet and broken and ice forms easily so it's a bit more difficult than it looks. A woman I met on the trail said that this trail has a reputation as a leg breaker because of all the loose rocks and wet and slippery roots. Of course many other trails connect so you can hike for days if you want. The falls is just a starting point to far more rugged and interesting places and few people turn back here. Ripley Falls is just one of the many waterfalls in the area and a pleasant little diversion from more strenuous hiking. In the spring it is pretty impressive but it's still but still nice even in periods of low water. A nice spot to visit as long as you don't have you expectations too high.

I managed to not fall off the hiking trail in foot deep snow and made it back here this summer for some waterfall repelling. Waterfall repelling was a fun experience. Repelling next to the falls that is. I still got soaked in 55 degree water.

Nice view with many wild flowers. I did a loop hike. 9.2…read moremile, 2625 feet elevation gain. Hiked up via Gorge Brook trail, then checked out South peak which is a small detour. Then, continued on Carriage road to the Mount Moosiluke. Hiked down via Beaver brook trail and Asquam ridge trail. The top area is green meadow. This is very unusual in the White mountains. It is nice to sit down in the meadow and have lunch with view.

I highly recommend this trail for a half day 4-5 hour outing as the full loop is about 7.5 miles. There is a little stretch near the top that's so windy it will freeze up your face and any liquids you're carrying will instantly turn into ice. I'm pretty sure with the windshield factor up there, it's below zero. As long as you've got the proper gear (gloves, multiple layers of clothing, hat and definitely microspikes or crampons) to tackle this baby, the summit is absolutely worth all the hard work. It is on a mountain so you gain a lot of elevation during the hike which can make it pretty tiring. It is relentless, but just keep thinking about the view and you'll eventually make it to the top before you know it. The view is completely worth it. It took us about 1.5 hours to hike up and about 1 hour to get down going along the same trail. I'd suggest bringing water, snacks, and food to enjoy at the top of the mountain. You'll also want some time to sit and enjoy the views.
