We stopped at all the popular areas such as Sabbaday Falls and Lower falls to name a couple. We went late May so the black flies were rampant. There is no cell service up there. I made almost 50-60 videos of this trip, you just can't resist it. We drove the Kancamagus Highway as part of our New England fall road trip while traveling from Franconia Notch State Park to Acadia National Park. (There are no gas stations along the way so full the tank before starting) bw the correct pronunciation is "kank-ah-MAU-gus. Take this scenic route from Lincoln, NH up to Conway. Be prepared to stop for the many breath taking views. The further north you go into the White Mountains, the brighter the foliage during peak season. This was my second time driving the Kancamagus highway and I could come back every year. The views are spectacular. There are so many stops that I haven't explored. Make sure you have a full tank of gas before starting out. Bring water and snacks too. Both times I started in Conway. Make sure to schedule this in to your trip! We had such a blast driving through! Somehow we got lucky with our trip on the peak tourist October weekend to not hit any traffic on this drive! I think the secret to our perfect timing was hitting this spot around 3 and starting from the Conway side. I am talking 0 traffic. And we got to enjoy so many stops and even hit the end right as it was getting to dark to explore. I do have to say though we did not have time to hike, but that was ok with us because it was our first day and we had many other hikes planned during the trip. read more

The Kancamagus runs through the White Mountain National Forest. There's no food or gas the length of the byway, cell service is almost non-existent, and it can be incomprehensibly busy during peak foliage. It had been a couple years since the last time I came, but my most recent trip was overwhelmed by the human imprint. Every scenic overlook was absolute chaos: people double-parked, fights happening as people blocked traffic trying to get a spot, and the litter here? OUTRAGEOUS. CARRY IN, CARRY OUT. IT'S A REALLY EASY CONCEPT. Throughout the years I've discovered similar areas to The Kancamagus, so I don't feel the pressure to visit it every single year like I did when I was younger. It's still gorgeous, I frequently see moose here, but my latest visit reminded me how much destruction humans are doing to natural spots like that. So.... If you're in NH for leaf peeping you gotta drive The Kanc (as it is so affectionately known by the locals lol)! It can be a little crowded but it's so worth it. I was there a few days "past peak" and it was still vibrant and full of colors around every corner! It's also an easy drive - road is in good condition, winds gently and has lots of viewpoints and interesting stops! A fascinating little side trip off The Kanc is the Madison Boulder (and since I couldn't find it on Yelp, here's my review for it)! At 4662 tons, 87 feet long and 37 feet high, to say this thing is huge is a tad underwhelming lol. There's a little parking area that was virtually empty on my visit - me and one other couple were there. To get to it, you have to drive a very bumpy dirt road so if you have a low vehicle, be really slow and careful ....had some large, deep potholes and wash boarding! The car behind me didn't even dare it and turned around lol! Trust me, it's worth it tho! There's a short, flat hike to get to the boulder after you park - it's so lovely and peaceful! And during October, the vibrant fall colors make it a marvelous wonderland to meander through! Some of the path is paved and some isn't - mostly just soft, dark dirt. Once you reach the boulder, the sheer size will have you in awe! There's plenty of pathway to walk around it and take photos etc. There are a couple of signs around with info about the boulder. There are no bathrooms and the cell/internet signal is non-existent so plan accordingly! read more

OMG, so amazingly beautiful. We drove part of this highway the first week of October and saw the most amazing scenes. Babbling brooks, mountain vistas, electric leaf colors and large and small waterfalls. Even the small distance we drove we saw so much. Do make sure to allow time to pull off and walk a bit to see the best views. You must pay to park in pulls offs. It is an honor system so please don't cheat our National Parks. read more

Rating the Kancamagus 4 stars is harsh, considering I didn't hit every point on the road, but there are many roads that truly take your breath away and the Kancamagus falls short in this category. The best thing you can do is go to the visitor/information center in Lincoln and get a map. You can just drive it but there is little reward in this, like I said, the views are not spectacular. But if you plan of spending a day, and you hit several of the trails, this is a very energetic and invigorating drive. You get to see rivers, waterfalls, lakes, and huge mountains if you hike. Phone service is spotty, lots of "No Service" everywhere. Also, you have to make a one time payment of $5/per car to park anywhere in the White Mountains. Take your food and water. This highway leads to Conway, NH and it is a beautiful route to take especially around this time of year if you like to see fall foliage. There are lots of places where you can pull off the road if you want to stop and just take in some of the gorgeous views. There are no gas stations along the way so always make sure you have at least a good half tank of gas before you get onto this highway and also it would be wise to take some drinking water with you since there are really no places to stop and grab anything. You'll start to see places to fill up your tank at the end of the highway to replenish whatever gas you used for the drive. There is little to no cellphone service as you're driving along this highway so make any calls you have to make before you get started along this route and give people the heads up that they might not be able to get a hold of you for however long it takes you to travel this highway, considering going the speed limit, any stops you may make to admire the colorful trees, and what not. You will love the sight trees here in the Autumn and the farther North you go the more colors you will be able to see. This is a perfect way to spend an Autumn day. I've been along this highway several times and I couldn't get over how pretty it all was! read more

We planned a fall foliage trip in New Hampshire and Vermont and this drive was THE BEST part of the trip. If you look up the name, you will find a lot of info online about all of the places to stop along the way. We did it "backwards" from North Conway to the west end of it (I forget the name of the town), stopping at 10 places along the way. The color was already gorgeous on September 29th, and each stop had it's unique beauty and photo opportunities. It was not as crowded as we expected. Parking was never a problem, and there are "out-houses" at every stop. Bring some extra tissues because the "out-houses" are not always stocked with toilet paper. We bought sandwiches at a general store before we left so we had lunch for a picnic at one of the stops, and also packed a cooler of drinks. I am not attaching photos because I took so many and all were gorgeous. I highly recommend this drive! read more

Kancamangus Highway stretches more than 30 miles through White Mountains. Fall is probably the best time to travel through this highway. Both sides of the road will be covered with colorful trees. There are numerous scenic stops along the drive. You can stop and enjoy the beauty of nature. There are camping areas and trails on the way. Sabbaday falls is beautiful. I first found the Kanc sometime back in the 1980's....when I was "just riding around" avoiding things in Boston. It's always an enjoyable drive (in the summah). Never done it in the winter, and I probably won't. Lots of places to stop and take in the view, take pictures, and enjoy everything around you. Some advice? Make sure you have at least 1/2 a tank of gas....cause it's a long walk from the middle of that 32 miles. Haha. read more

Beautiful highway with quite a few scenic peaks and hikes off of it. The highway takes you from Conway to Lincoln and on each end there's a decent amount to do in each town, even in the off season. There are a decent amount of campgrounds off of the highway and a lot of views to see in the highway. (Unfortunately) we didn't get to see a moose but the views made up for it. Windy days get reaaalllly windy in the higher elevations! We made this a daily drive while we were there. read more

Wow! Such beauty! Great roadways, and plenty of marked photo spots for picture taking. The air is clean, crisp, and so uplifting. We ventured down to Lower Falls swimming hole and had a fantastic time. It wasn't overcrowded. and though the water was cold, we got used to it quickly, and it was like a baptism for the soul! I would warn anyone going here to be careful because the rocks are slippery, made smooth by the flow of water over time. Next time I visit I'll be sure to bring a picnic and a float to make the most of it. It's great for families and worth the scenic ride. read more

Overrrated. If you want old barns which of course you do, there are none. Fall foliage might be ok but a lotta evergreens.

We drove it at night, so could not se as many of the views. We did seem some wildlife and it looked so nice with the snow.

Love the Kanc. It's more than just a way to get from Lincoln to Conway. It's one of the few places in New England where you can drive through true Wilderness. In winter in particular, it's possible to drive this highway and only see 1 or 2 other cars. Unlike summer weekends when it can be bumper to bumper traffic. If you have not driven the Kanc, add it to your bucket list. read more

Drive safely! The Highway Department does a great job keeping the road clear but it can get slippery in the winter time. It's great in the fall to see the leafs and swimming in the swimming holes during the summer is super fun! read more

At least 3 waterfalls are located on or off the Kancamagus Highway and the view is just simply incredible.
