This shop is great. I've been coming here religiously for about a year now to get all my gear. Craig is an awesome guy and he has awesome staff. Update on my previous review. I erroneously indicated in my last review that an employee had overfilled my steel tank. It turned out that this bottle was not a steel but in fact an aluminum. I had this bottle mixed up with another bottle I once had and didn't realize it was no longer in my inventory. But needless to say, the employee did his job correctly and it was my assumption that was wrong. I am visiting from New England and struggled to find a dive center that I felt comfortable with. I contacted many shops via email with no response. I drove to visit a few that turned me off from pricing to attitude. Just out of luck on my last two weeks here I found Sharky's. I am an SSI instructor and I am a bit picky. I completed my PADI Advanced Open Water certification with Michael from Sharky's Eco Diving. He was my first instructor when I got certified out of another dive shop down in OC. I had a great time and learned a lot from. He's definitely is thorough and also very patient. Safety is paramount and he definitely stresses that in his teaching. I had to rent gear from the dive trip to the Catalina Island Dive Park and was assisted by Craig. I went to the shop during my lunch break to pick up gear and was in and out pretty fast. Their pricing was very affordable and even a few dollars cheaper than Sports Chalet when they were still in business. They have a decent selection of up to date gear in clean and good condition. I will be definitely renting from them until I save up for my own gear in the future. The shop is about the same size as most typical dive shops but they have a pretty decent selection of gear and some high end brands as well. There are a few other dive shops that are closer to where I live but I'm willing to drive out to Sharky's because of the customer service and great pricing. I'll be using them for a long time to come for all of my diving needs. read more

Honestly I don't write a lot of Yelp! reviews, but I just have to give a shout out to Sharky's for exceptional service and instruction! The owner is always ready to give advice, but not push anything you don't actually need, and their prices are just as good (and in some cases better, considering there are no shipping fees) as many online retailers. Both my son and I were NAUI certified through the shop, and I've started with advanced open water. We feel very well trained and more than capable of handling some of the best diving that California has to offer. My daughter, who is 11, has been wanting to join me scuba diving for several years now. I have been a bit apprehensive, but finally relented. I scoured many different dive shops trying to find an outfit that I felt would be patient, supportive, nurturing, and yet ensure my daughter walked away with the necessary skills to become a competent diver. I stopped by Sharky's today for the first time. I rented 2 regulators, 2 tanks and 2 wetsuits for use and return today. The rental price seemed a little high, but looking around the store, the prices seemed very reasonable. I suspect the items I rented are the best quality and that the store spends a good amount of money to keep them working perfectly. The staff is really nice and helpful. This experience occurred in 2014, but I have since relocated and only now feel comfortable relating this issue. I picked up my regs from Sharky's following service, where they had been serviced before. The owner at the time, Tony, was insistent that the regs had lube remaining inside from their last service, that it looked like they "hadn't been dove at all." In all honestly, the regs have been dove lightly in the past two years, but they have been dove - but this is irrelevant, even according to Aqualung. When I went to pick up my reg, Tony failed to mention any damage to the regulator during the service. However, as soon as I returned home, I noticed that there was damage to the first stage, gouged metal and removal of chrome. I began corresponding directly with Aqualung, as Tony indicated he was also communicating directly with Aqualung. Days following this, Tony called my supervisor - yes, my supervisor at work, a man Tony had never met - and, in the words of my supervisor, screamed and threatened to do terrible things to me. Tony threatened to slander and libel me. My supervisor called me into his office, in complete shock, aghast at when he had just heard from Tony. I never gave Tony my work number, and clearly not my supervisor's number (and he had my cell phone number as well as my e-mail address). I can only infer that he went out of his way to track these down on the Internet, to scare me. I will not attempt to explain his actions, but I felt threatened and bullied. I had never, in any way, threatened Tony or his business. I brought my regulator to him for service (undamaged and unscathed), and he gave it back, with chrome scuffed off. When I respectfully and professionally contacted him, he rapidly resorted to truly frightening tactics. He called my employer, clearly trying to put my job in jeopardy, and threatened me. I never received an apology from Tony or Sharky's for this. **EDIT/AMENDMENT** Since posting this review, the current owner, Craig, also reached out to me via private message in addition to his reply below. While I appreciate the reply, I will be unable to remove this review at this time. This is my honest experience with the brand, and the damages were real - including an unnecessary strain with my supervisor at the time, and a still-marred Apeks DS4 first stage. Craig, I wish you the best of luck in your new venture, and as marine scientist who studies coral reefs, value the importance of the diving industry. Your work shows people the incredible underwater world and brings attention the protection and conservation so desperately needed. However, even four years later, the memories of my run-in with Tony are strong. I was completely innocent in this encounter. If you have ever had your physical well-being, reputation, and livelihood threatened, I think you will understand why I feel that this needs to remain on record. I cannot say enough about this amazing local business. My 12 year old daughter and I were in Grand Cayman two years ago, and she was just barely old enough at the time to take a Snuba Adventure. We tooled around in 18' of water, and we were both instantly hooked. We decided on the plane ride home that we would take Scuba lessons. The next year, our Hawaii vacation came and went, no Scuba. We again renewed our commitment to learn Scuba. Then, we booked our Grand Cayman trip for this year. And we just had to learn. In my trademark procrastination, I waited until 30 days before my trip to look into it. I wanted to deal with a local business, and I found Sharky's on the internet. I called, and a super nice gal named Savannah answered the phone. I explained my time crunch and other obstacles, and she assured me that if I were committed, I could become a certified diver in time for our trip. My family and I went into the dive shop the next day, and Savannah was there, along with Craig, the owner. They are both amazing, and answered all of our questions. We signed up on the spot. Fast forward 30 days, and my daughter and I are both (literally) card-carrying PADI Open Water Divers! There was a particular skill that my daughter had trouble with. I was so nervous, both for her confidence and her safety. All the while, Craig and her instructor Suzy both comforted my wife and I, and instilled confidence in my daughter that she could do this. And do this she did. We now are the proud owners of a full set of our own scuba gear, and Craig did a great job fitting us. I've had just three dives on my new gear, and I can honestly say that it fits like a glove. We leave for Grand Cayman this friday, and have 8 dives scheduled. But I know that is just the beginning. If you are looking for a dive shop, go see Craig and Savannah. They are honest, caring, and safety minded. We had a chance to work with three instructors during our training, and while they are all first rate instructors, I would highly recommend Suzy. Especially for children. Knowing what I know now, I would only let my daughter train with either Craig or Suzy. And we will definitely be continuing our education with this fine dive shop. Sharkey is the best!!! We called Sharkey aka Tony up two weeks before going to Hawaii asking if we could get scuba certified that quickly. He totally made it work. He was super accommodating and flexible with us and our crazy work schedules which is tough to do. We did the class work one day after work, the pool skills the next day after work, our first open water beach dive out of Laguna Beach after work on a Friday, and our other dives on a boat out at Catalina on the weekend. It was intense but we were able to get certified before going on vacation. He gives a super reasonable price package for everything. Scuba is not a cheap sport (and shouldn't be since quality protects your life!) but after we called around a little his prices were the best around. We upgraded some of our gear, and he gave us some great deals to start us off which was really nice. He has high quality gear in his shop and seems to have at least a couple great choices of every possibility/type/style for each thing. He helped explain all the choices to us to help us choose what was best for us. He even special ordered a snorkel for me because he was out of the color I wanted. All the gear we rented was in really good shape too, nothing that looked like it was a bit wore out and needed to be replaced like some rental places do. For the course, he was a great teacher. He's super laid back and fun in general, but don't be fooled. He takes the education of scuba seriously. He really takes the time needed to make sure you understand everything and are totally comfortable with the skills before moving on. For something that can kill you if you screw it up, I was a little worried about making sure we got everything right. He was very patient and did a great job answering our questions and teaching us every skill and step along the way. And of course, he's PADI certified. And once all the serious stuff is done, he knows how to have fun! The dives were SO AMAZING!!! I was blown away by how spectacular the wildlife is here in our own waters! Some of his dive masters came with us on our dives to help which was really cool and reassuring. His regulars are like a family with this great friendly community feel. Really cool people. First off, full disclosure that I am a true believer in YELP reviews whether they are good or bad. I solely chose Sharky's to learn SCUBA off of all the positive reviews on YELP. I met Craig Yeaton/aka "The Professor" as I walked into his shop around a month ago. I told him that I was interested in getting certified in Scuba and that I was "ALL IN!". Craig explained to me in great detail about the Open Water Course and what to expect. After a few signatures, I was ready to go. The certification took less than a month, and would have been done earlier, but every students schedule was different for all of the dives we had to complete. Craig is an excellent and patient instructor of Scuba as well as being knowledgeable about all the equipment. He never tried to up sell me on anything, only just what I needed. All of his staff were very helpful with any questions I had, whether it was about purchasing equipment or about Scuba. I completed my OW certification here, had an awesome time. Instructors are extremely knowledgeable and have a true passion for the sport and the well being if students during dives. Craig is great, funny guy with a wealth of knowledge on diving and equipment. Do yourself a favor and talk to Craig before buying any scuba gear, he won't try to sell you the world and he is not pushy or pressure you into buying gear. Great customer service, but you will walk out alot smarter about scuba gear after having Craig help you out. I took my regulator in for service and found a leak, I and others felt was an o-ring turned out to micro crack in the regulator itself. Great folks to deal with. I stopped by to sign up for the dive club and ended up spending two hours talking with Craig and Michael. They kept throwing little nuggets of knowledge out and I kept picking them up. While relating my experiences as a beginning diver, they never made me feel like a joe. John V led me through my first 3 AOW dives, can't thank him enough for his patience. I went from going up and down like a bobber my first dive to relaxed, neutral and trimmed by my third. Craig recommended gear that his staff actually dives, not necessarily what brings him the best margin. I have not been to his dive shop, but had the absolute pleasure of meeting the owner and one of his instructors Michael Francisco at Diver's Cove in Laguna Beach. While getting ready for our dive, my dive buddy had an issue with her power inflator on her bc where the power inflator kept leaking. I have never had this issue with rental gear before, hence I had no idea what to do. Without even hesitating, Sharky came over and kindly assisted us in our time of need, repairing the issue and allowing us to continue on our dive adventure. Shortly after this, I decided to chat up Michael as I had never dove at Diver's Cove and wasn't sure where to go. He gladly gave us his expert advice as to where we should head out as well as what we could expect to see. His assistance did not end there. While I was getting ready, I had issues with my semi dry zipper as it kept coming undone. Michael being the saint that he is, offered me a top to wear over my wetsuit and it definitely helped keep me warm during our dive. If this is any resemblance of the way the dive shop is run, I can only imagine the amount of loyal divers that will continue to frequent their shop every year. I was here on the 30th looking for a specific item and have never been so insulted by a salesperson before. I was taken aback when the salesman told me, "I'm sick of you just coming in here looking at sh!#, bye!" I could not believe it. He also wished me luck finding my item on the internet before he said this to me. I have bought smaller items from here before, granted nothing big ticket but that's no reason to treat a customer like that. UPDATE: I would hate for my honest review to be invalidated because of a hasty comment. The owner did greet me with a warm hello when I came in to drop my gear off, but it is a COMPLETE lie that he asked about my dive. (I would never have said "Fine") He was preoccupied with work and I by no means expected him to be attentive to me--I appreciated the greeting. But, I did expect the young gal helping me out to be attentive. She was not by any means and that experience is what my review is about. As an example of the lack of communication from her, she was singing a song barely lifting her head to make eye contact. I LITERALLY had to ask her "...so am I good to go?" after she checked my gear because she didn't say a word. My boyfriend who accompanied me commented on how awkward the exchange was as we left. I would never post a review for personal reasons.. that is an absurd accusation and far from the truth. This is my HONEST review of my experience here and I am not surprised by lack of costumer service exemplified by the owners response. We went in there today to get information on classes as we are new to this sport and Tony and his wife were super friendly and had so much knowledge to share with us. You could hear the excitement as Tony and his wife Catalina talked about scuba diving. Tony gave us a tour of the store and showed us exactly what we need to start the open water diving course. He didn't try and push high priced equipment on us as some of the other places do. He was up front and told us the total costs involved and what those cost cover. Great place! Even though I am a dive instructor, I originally tried this dive center to dive while on vacation. Then when I returned to California I continue to dive with them. They have great instructors, great activities at the shop, pool lessons & a great way for divers of all levels to practice their skills or test out new equipment before taking it out in the open waters. I have recommended this shop to many people wantingto try diving. I highly recommend and plan to have my nieces & nephews to get certified with this shop! They definitely put safety first and make you feel comfortable in the water. If you want to learn to dive or need a dive buddy, go on a weekend excursion, scuba vacation, boat or shore dive activities this is the shop for you! read more

Let me start off by saying how awesome and kind Sharky and Catalina are! They both taught me and my fiancée how to dive (Open Water PADI certification) and I will forever be grateful! Diving, especially in our waters, is truly a life changing experience and you can't be in better hands then with Skarky. As previously mentioned, he certified my fiancée and I, for open water PADI certification and having been diving for almost two years now I can say that he is still the best dive master and the best dive shop I have ever worked with! I would recommend the class to anyone and despite moving away from the area I have all intentions of getting my advance certifications from him and Catalina. He has a great store with everything you need. Having help run a business myself, I understand that he will offer items to purchase (that is after all how we/they make money) but he does it in a very respectful manner. We ended up purchasing most of gear from him because he was a better priced than most and the advice/recommendations he gave us were invaluable. I have looked at gear online, but you can't compare to being able to try them on/out and being able to ask sharky, and the multiple other dive masters who often stop by, what they think of them. Perfect example, I had looked at fins online and was pretty sure which pair I wanted (having tried a friends out before), but when I got there I ended up getting a different pair. Sharky didn't say bad things about my request, but said for my style, build etc.. I should go with a different set. I tried both, and have tried both multiple times now on dives and I must thank Sharky for once again being spot on. To be honest he got my fiancée and I into diving so much I asked Sharky to help me propose to her on a dive in Catalina. I worked out amazing, she said yes!, and we will be tying the knot in June! Thanks Sharky and Catalina! Who knew walking into a dive shop would take us down this crazy awesome path... I needed snorkeling equipment for my trip to Hawaii. I was greeted at the door and helped as soon as I walked in. Sharky & Company do this thing called Discover Diving, which lets you skip the boring part of SCUBA training (the pool) and get straight in the ocean to see some fish. We had SO much fun at Catalina, and I felt very safe the whole time. It was a great experience, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. read more

Generous always donating to the local dive club. Opens his pool sessions to everyone to test gear and refresh skills.
