fries and ketchup on a plate

Dixie Dog has been around forever. That should say it all. It is a very simple concept. They serve corn dogs, French fries and drinks. The corn dogs are hot and fresh and the batter has just the right taste of sweetness. The ratio of batter to hot dog is right on the money. You can get ketchup and/or mustard slathered on your single or double corn dog. The french fry's are previously frozen but are steaming hot and addicting. I always get the sweet ice tea to finish it off. It is perfect for my taste. I've been going here for years and it is a very consistent place. It's just an old trailer that is right in the front of Howard's Flea Market on hwy19.

Great food served at a classic Florida "roadside Americana" stand. They've been there 50 years, so you know it's gotta be good!

My initial bite (a gator sized one) merely grazed the perimeter. I was sent scampering off like a chihuahua tail between my legs whimpering. I regained my pride in time and went back to combat with that beast, the details of which I will spare you. I emerged victorious but both my girlfriend and I agreed we could have shared one. I would like to go back again and again to try their various hot dogs and a pork cutlet sandwich which appears insane. I hope to see you there. Established July 7, 1960 -- same location, same World Famous Footlongs, still slinging them out of a kitchen that's clearly been doing this a long, long time. There's even a framed cease-and-desist letter from Subway's lawyers on the wall over the word "Footlong" -- they told 'em no. Fifteen years later, still hanging there, still called a Footlong. We had the Short Reuben Dog and the Long Chicago Dog, plus a side of fried corn and onion rings. April took great care of us -- sweet, and clearly not slowing down with baby #2 on the way. The Chicago Dog alone is worth the trip -- easily twice the size, cheaper, and better than a certain loud-on-social-media hot dog guy's version. Yes, that's a dig, and yes, it's deserved. Fried corn was a fun surprise, onion rings were solid, and honestly -- what's not to love here? One gripe: there's a credit card upcharge that isn't clearly disclosed up front. Worth knowing before you order. Otherwise, this is a bucket-list stop. Wish we lived closer. We'll be back -- someday, somehow.

It was about 7.50 after paying in cash. I waited for a couple minutes, and it my name was called to pick up my order. I ate outside in a small bench. The hotdog was loaded with the toppings like relish, pickles, and peppers. I added mustard and ketchup too. The hotdog was plump, and the toppings were alright. It isn't as good as Portillos, but still decent for the price. It was filling for lunch too. The atmosphere is the same, but the party room in the back is now available in you have an extra air conditioned space to eat. It wasn't that crowded outside, but there were quite a few inside. I guess more people wanted the cooler area as it was a bit hot and humid outside. Parking can sometimes be hard to get in the front, so there is a back area too. There is a small stage for concerts now, but I haven't seen any yet. The mechanical horse still works, but the dino one was out of order, and the dolphin one looks to be gone. Staff is pretty quick and friendly. I am glad I ate here again on Sunday as the food was good and filling. No complaints for 7.50 on a footlong Nathan Chicago dog. Will continue to visit occasionally when I am in Brooksville. Overall: B

One of the really interesting things about Daddy Dawg's is that they offer several premium brands of hotdogs to choose from (at slightly different prices). This includes Nathan's, Sabrett & Vienna as well as a couple of others. As usual, I had to try several things on the menu. I had the 6" Chicago beef with mild giardiniera (slightly disappointing that they don't offer a hot giardiniera), a Nathan's hotdog with chili & cheese, and a Nathan's hotdog with sauerkraut and mustard. I really liked the flavor of the chili and I was happy that they sauerkraut was hot. Some of the other choices were a foot long hotdog with bacon and cheese, a double cheeseburger and chicken nuggets for 2 of the kids. The French fries seemed just ok, not as good as the other things. As you can see on the menu, they offer a number of other options too. They have hand scooped ice cream as well as several famous ice cream bars from my childhood. All in all, a fun experience and everyone seemed happy with their lunch. The servers were efficient, the food came out fairly quickly and one of our servers was incredibly friendly and helpful. I think the 4 yr old boy in our group had a crush on her. The atmosphere / decor is just ok but it doesn't really detract from the experience. I would definitely come back again.

They currently do not carry the full menu they show online, so I went with a Chicago hot dog, and the Italian beef sandwich. Paulie educated me a bit on the sandwich; if I wanted it juicy (with the sauce already on it) or on the side to dip into (yes, please, I'm a dipper), and how spicy I wanted it (more peppers, less peppers). After a nice chat with Paulie about politics, I headed home and dug in. The Chicago hot dog was perfect, although I had to remove the hot peppers. The sandwich was outstanding; the beef so tender, the peppers and onions adding depth, and the roll was so soft-I could only eat half, but the other half heated up nicely for dinner. Can't wait to go back!
