Where to begin?! Working with Harsh was an absolute pleasure! My new husband and I are actually trying to figure out when we may need a DJ again! Neither of us could imagine why anyone would choose a large entertainment company, where you don't know who you'll get, over this very personable and knowledgeable man. Going into wedding planning I was most worried about the music. I didn't want to splurge on a live band and wanted the diversity in genre that a DJ can bring. DJ Harsh did an outstanding job. He asks for a list of songs/artists that you especially love and dislike and then takes it from there. He clearly has extensive experience and has great suggestions with regards to structure the entire evening. I especially loved that he is not afraid to give his opinion/give feed back. For example, he suggested that certain songs I had picked out for the cocktail party actually be used during dinner. Everyone kept coming up to me during our night saying how much they loved the music. He was able to get everyone from our 4 year old cousin to our 84 year old grandfather dancing. As I quickly learned it is important to have a DJ who is flexible and knows how to adapt to the changes that occur during the reception. For example, when we had to move everything up by 15 minutes or do the father daughter dance earlier to accommodate the videographer's schedule, it was not a problem at all . My wife found DJ Harsh while I was proposing that we didn't need a DJ at all, we were too hip for that! Boy was I wrong. We met with Harsh and enjoyed his attitude and demeanor immediately. He clearly has a history and pedigree of being able to work a room and a crowd. He listened to our description of our ceremony and helped direct us on how to make some decisions on music. When we gave him our list of must-plays, he was taken a back by some of our choices and considered them "interesting", but promised us this would help him gauge how to run the event. It was fun to throw him for a loop on some of our song choices but he agreed to play everything and he did! We had our event at the Joinery which did not allow for a ton of dance floor, but we made it work and the guests enjoyed themselves immensely when it was time for music. Harsh also has enough charisma to roll with any unexpected moments that may occur at a wedding. He was able to work with our day of coordinator easily. Ok so all I can say is wow! My wife and I engaged Harsh for our wedding via our wedding planner and he did not disappoint. This was a second marriage for the both of us and so our wedding theme was elegant dinner party. It was held at the Langham with close family and friends (~95 ppl). We explained to Harsh that we wanted to have the ambiance of a high-end trendy restaurant. Not too loud but create a sophisticated backdrop. So the music choices were going to be very instrumental (pun intended) in creating that vibe while allowing intimate conversations with our guests. Harsh totally got it and executed flawlessly. Few things that I loved about him. - My husband and I moved to another city just few months before the wedding. I was nervous about communicating effectively with my vendors. With Harsh, it wasn't a problem. He would email and call us whenever he had a question. After our first meeting with Harsh, 8 moths before the wedding, we never met him in person. But I can confidently say that no one else could have done a better job than him with the information he got from us through emails.. - He called up the venue manager months before the wedding and figured everything out. On the day of the wedding, I saw him at the venue early in the morning even though the wedding was in the evening. I initially planned to do my own iPod playlist for my wedding, but thankfully someone talked me out of it. I'm very glad they did, otherwise I wouldn't have met DJ Harsh. I searched Yelp for about 2 minutes before I came across him and thought - yes, I must contact this man. 1. He was an independent guy and I think it's a lot easier to deal directly with someone and 2. He lived in the next neighborhood over, so I knew he wasn't going to be a douche-y hipster transplant. It also helped that he had a 5 star rating, of course. Communication with DJ Harsh was great - he always replied promptly to my emails. Meeting up with him was good too, he was very friendly and funny. We also met up with him a month before our wedding to go over songs we wanted to play, etc. He was really helpful with coming up with songs for certain parts of the reception (cake cutting, etc) that we hadn't picked. He listened to us and also played us some of his suggestions. He definitely knows what he's talking about and has a lot of experience. I wanted to play a slideshow during the wedding, and was glad I mentioned it to him. He visited the reception venue the week of the wedding, and worked with the venue owner to make sure it would be possible. He even brought his own little table to put my projector on! He asked about the format, my computer, etc to make sure he had all the cables and everything we needed. He made it seamless! As for the reception itself, DJ Harsh played all the songs I requested and the songs he added in himself were also great. He got a good sense of what we liked from the list of requested songs we gave him. I don't think we picked the most traditional entrance songs for the bridal party/bride and groom, but he actually listened to them and picked out the best parts of the songs to use. And once the dance floor was opened, it was never empty. There were people on the dance floor the entire night. At the end, people started chanting, one more song! My friends and family absolutely loved him and had a great time. A few people requested some songs and he actually came up to me first to make sure it was okay with me before he went ahead and played them. I really appreciated that because I am kind of a jerk that hates most peoples' taste in music (but with good reason, right?!). Not only was the music he played amazing, but his sense of humor is great. He also kept things on track and was very organized. Everyone from my 11 year old cousin to my 60 year old uncle, to all my friends were on the dance floor. I'm so happy I decided against being a cheap bastard and making my own iPod playlist. I was planning my IL wedding from CA, so obviously I was a bit nervous booking someone without meeting them. Harsh was one of the first ones to respond to my inquiry, had the most reasonable price, not part of some big company with DJs they just randomly assign to you and FUNNY AS HELL! We were able to meet him 6 months before the wedding when we were in Chicago for the holidays. He was very easy to talk to, put both of us at ease and uber professional. He was the only one of my vendors who reached out to me a month out to figure out the logistics. We were only going to play one song for the bridesmaids and myself to walk down the aisle, but Harsh gave me his concerns and some options so I could have my own song when I walked. I'm so glad he did, I really felt like he wanted the evening to go as well as I did and was protective of me the entire time. My husband is very into music and we knew exactly how we wanted our wedding to sound. Harsh not only respected that he took it to the next level. I had guests come to me even before the ceremony when I was getting ready telling me how good the music was, and the praises continued throughout the evening. There were a few couples at our wedding who were getting married after us and they all wanted to book Harsh, but Harsh is in high demand so you gotta act fast and early! He was professional, a pleasure to work with, and my wife and I would fully endorse him to anyone considering hiring him. Our work with Harsh began with a consultation. He met us at a quiet bar nearby our place and made introductions. He made a brilliant first impression as both friendly and professional. He made a concerted effort to get to know us and gauge what we expected for our wedding. We signed a preliminary agreement to hold his time. As our wedding date grew closer Harsh did a great job of staying in contact. We built a prospective playlist to encompass our (admittedly eccentric) music tastes. A few weeks out from our wedding we met Harsh at his lovely home where he offered us margaritas while we went over the final plans and nitty-gritty for the ceremony and reception. Harsh did a great job walking us through the plan, i.e. What song is the bride walking down to? Who is giving a speech? What should I play during dinner?--all the stuff that can be daunting. We left feeling well rehearsed and that Harsh had everything covered so we wouldn't have to worry about it. The day of our wedding went flawlessly. Harsh provided sound equipment and set up for both our ceremony and reception--at the same venue. We arrived and Harsh had set up to mic the ceremony and handle background music for cocktails and dinner. Harsh really nailed our ceremony vibe--and as a nontraditional bride and groom, he helped us inject a lot of 'ourselves' into this moment. The officiant was mic-ed appropriately, and there wasn't any "fumbling" with a microphone while we read our vows. The evening moved flawlessly into cocktail hour and dinner following. He was so wonderful interacting with our family members. Harsh took the best parts of our requested music list and incorporated them into the ambiance of the evening. Harsh really took control of the reception after dinner. Our families, generally shy people, were on the floor dancing all night. Harsh was not only willing to help us out, but he was genuinely excited and enthusiastic about our micro wedding / summer soiree. DJ Harsh MADE my wedding on November 9th, 2013! I found Harsh through the venue I had booked at and from the instant my wife and I met him, we knew we were going with the right person. Not only did he impress us with his wits, but he was so affordable for our budget, we had to double check if we heard him right!--This was after the outrageous quotes and rude service we got from other big companies in the area. He not only made a trip during rush hour from Chicago to La Grange to meet us at a time convenient for us, he also invited us to his home and really sat with us and hashed out exactly what we wanted, and I KNOW I made poor choices with some of the music (because I like some really terrible music), but it's what I wanted, and he did it, no questions asked--and that was what made me totally thrilled. I even emailed him in frantic bride-crazy desperation to change a couple of songs last minute--like the morning of the wedding last minute-- like what I was dancing with my dad to. He didn't even bat an eye and changed it right away. (Harsh works predominately with CD's, and not an iPod, and I liked that). I had also originally told my father-in-law we were walking out to a certain song (which I later changed and didn't inform my dad), but my father-in-law had planned his whole speech around the song I told him (which we didn't know, his speech was a surprise). He told Harsh about this, so Harsh downloaded the song needed right then and there and played it so my father-in-law could make his speech. Harsh went above and beyond his call of duty, making sure I had cupcakes and was genuinely happy--even when other parts of the wedding didn't go so smoothly, like when my coordinator didn't bother to line anyone up and help us know when to go. Harsh was there signaling people and changing our music. He also asked me step by step what I wanted to happen since our caterer didn't give him a time-line of events (I guess they're supposed to do that) which I really loved. He's a great go-with-the-flow kind of guy, and I love it! So really, if you want to make a lifelong friend who knows a lot about music, professionalism, and how to make people laugh and have a good time, PLEASE call him to help you out. wow, working with Harsh was amazing. He was actually the first vendor we hired after we met him at Loft on Lake when we were looking for venues for our 12/21/13 wedding. Some great things about Harsh: - he knows what he's doing with logistics. He has worked in our venue before and was able to make everything work without us having to worry about anything. - he knows what he's doing with music selections. We went over to his house one morning about 3 weeks before the wedding and he showed us lots of different options for different parts of the evening that we hadn't really thought about. He knew when we should have music without lyrics, when lyrics are nice, etc. - he'll work with the music you give him. we decided we didn't really want to worry about our music going together and so played a huge classical piece right before the first 1:17 of a kind of emo piece for our processional. Harsh absolutely made it work including the timing and editing of the music - he's not cheesy. no "we are family" or "shout" for this crowd. He did not make any crazy jokes on the mic, just kept things on time and kept the focus on us - he read our crowd and kept the dance floor going all night. seriously, I haven't really seen a wedding this dancey maybe ever, and we're not even big dancers. Around 1030 he found me and remarked that we were having so much fun he hadn't played any slow songs yet, but could if we wanted. he also kept my friends from making obscure requests that would be good but people wouldn't know people actually commented on how great our dj was. I don't think I've ever noticed or commented on a dj at a wedding. He's also pretty funny and just generally fun to work with! We hired Harsh for our wedding in oak park. First off, we were super impressed by his passion for and knowledge of music. Secondly, he is very professional and has a great sense of humor. But where he really shines is with customer service. We had been chatting with Harsh about how terrible our venue coordinator was. When the day of the wedding came, Harsh had our back the whole way, even taking some of the pressure off by dealing with our crazy venue coordinator himself. He thoroughly surpassed our expectations and hopes at our "post-elopement" party in Chicago over Memorial Day weekend this year. Harsh was our DJ for our Hindu ceremony, civil ceremony and wedding reception all onsite at Greenhouse Loft, and he did each component flawlessly! We booked DJ Harsh for our wedding in Milwaukee and could not be happier with having him as our DJ. We talked to a few other DJ services from Chicago, but were really happy that when working with Harsh, you are working with him and only him from booking to event. Harsh is so accommodating and easy to work with in the months before the event. About a month prior to our wedding, he invited us for a pre-wedding listening session to go over some different music he was thinking about for the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing. This was SO HELPFUL. I love Led Zeppelin, but obviously didn't expect to be rocking out to Black Dog during dinner. When I mentioned some of my favorite bands, Harsh put on some great covers of some of my favorite bands that he would be able to play during dinner. When choosing a processional song, my wife liked a piano cover of a song from Youtube. At our request, Harsh took the song, cut it into different segments, and looped her favorite parts during each part of the processional. It was awesome. Harsh also went above and beyond by making a "scouting" trip to our venue in Milwaukee since he had not been there before. He wanted to get a feel for the room and make sure he was prepared for the layout of the room and locations of the power outlets. This just shows his commitment to providing excellent service and his passion for his job. Harsh arrived early and handled some last-minute hiccups like a professional. His background in event planning showed, as he basically became our 2nd day-of-coordinator during set-up and throughout the event. Harsh was great during the entire event and we received a lot of positive feedback from friends and family about the DJ. My husband Michael and I booked DJ Harsh for our wedding in downtown Chicago on June 28 2014. Advice: Stop looking! Go with DJ Harsh. I had looked at bands and local DJ companies, like Toast & Jam. Eh, nothing came close to DJ Harsh. We are both 31-years-old and we wanted a DJ who would play everything including the Killers, Billy Joel, Frank Sinatra, Phish, Florence & the Machine,Avicii, Calvin Harris, Bruce, etc. Our wedding was a classic, sophisticated wedding at the Omni on Michigan Avenue and we had around 140 people at our wedding. I wanted a DJ who was sophisticated (not wearing some cheesy 80's vest and not obnoxious), reasonably priced, could keep the dance floor filled, appeal to an age group from 25-65, etc. DJ Harsh met all of these criteria and beyond. Before the wedding, he met with us at his house. We listened to tunes while having a few margaritas and picked out our music. We gave him 15 songs we really liked and then gave him a few songs, which were on the "do not play" list. DJ Harsh was flexible and gave us ideas for songs too. He knows what he's doing and he makes it a fun and exciting process. Before the introduction of our wedding party at the reception, DJ Harsh was also flexible when we had to do some last minute changes to the line up of our introductions. He handled it seamlessly. He did an amazing intro for the wedding party with the instrumental theme from Casino and for our husband and wife intro, he did the Bittersweet Symphony instrumental and it gave me goosebumps. Creative and just plain cool. I didn't want to be like everyone else with the intro song of Chelsea Dagger (even though I'm a huge Hawks fan). During the reception, our dance floor was packed from 8:45 to midnight...actually a little past midnight. Everyone from the age of 25 to 65 told me what a great time. In part, they had a great time because our DJ was sharp, understood our audience and just rocked. My wife and I booked DJ Harsh for our wedding in Chicago. To say we were a complicated case, would be an understatement. We were, and are still both living in Australia, and doing everything remotely. As you would understand, we needed to find a DJ that was able to liaise remotely with us, and, due to time differences, use some initiative, and advise us with minimal contact. Harsh fit the bill perfectly. After a skype call to see if what Harsh could provide was what we were after (at his insistance, not ours!), we were immediately at ease. Harsh was able to explain the process, and what he required from us, as well as what we could expect from him, as well as his style. During this "evaluation period" we were never made to feel obligated to go ahead - something my wife and I really appreciated in the early stages. As the wedding got closer, we provided Harsh with the songs we would like played, so he could get a feel for the style we were after, and augment them with other songs to make it flow. We both found the way Harsh got us to document the songs we wanted to be really effective, and took the pain out of what we thought was going to be a massive (if not impossible) task. The first time we met Harsh face to face was a week before the wedding (when we were in the US) - to sort out the finer points around the logistics of the wedding. Once again, Harsh only strengthened our feelings that he was going to be able to lead and guide us where we required, rather than the other way round! Needless to say, the wedding went off without a hitch, and we still have people telling us how wonderful the wedding and the music was.
