"Oh! This girl is a real DJ!" Echoed again and again on the dance floor by our most discerning (picky?) music aficionado guests, DJ Clare was a GODSEND to our special night's dance floor. A gem of a person to work with from the start, she takes the job seriously - crafting the night to fit our sensibilities (as a couple and knowing who our guests would be) perfectly, but also leaving room to feel the vibe in the room and adjust up or down accordingly. (Side bar: when my partner's mother demanded we release YMCA from the no-play list and do it, Clare knew exactly how to get the immediately evacuated dancefloor bumping again). She has fun, adds excitement with her announcements and personality and is willing to think outside the box to make your event feel like a true party. We were blown away by the final playlist. We had an OK experience with Groove is in the Heart DJs for our wedding. The initial communication with our DJ was good. We made our own dance floor playlist and were expecting the DJ to play it all after they said it was great. But, the day of the wedding, the DJ told my husband they were having Wi-Fi issues and couldn't access the playlist. He didn't know why the songs on the playlist weren't downloaded by the DJ before the wedding in case there were Wi-Fi issues. Guests also requested songs multiple times and were told by the DJ that they couldn't be played due to the Wi-Fi issues. Then when I asked why our playlist wasn't played, I was told "You didn't say the playlist was a must play". I wish we were told by the DJ that we needed to say that the entire playlist was "must play" during the planning phase.The DJ also didn't read the room and hype up our guests to get on the dance floor until the last song, so it felt a little dead throughout the wedding. The guests that danced were OK with the playlist, thankfully, but the DJ experience was pretty disappointing overall. If we knew the DJ experience was going to be sub-par, we probably wouldn't have paid our venue's additional audio tie-in fee. read more

We love Jessi. From the start she was so patient with us despite our lack of preparation for our initial meeting and overall indecisiveness. She handled all of our sound/microphone needs for both the ceremony and the reception, both of which went off without a hitch. For our cocktail hour she was able to create the exact mood/vibe we wanted to achieve from the very vague prompt we provided. We're not big dancers but Jessi was able to read the room and create an atmosphere that allowed our guests (who are big dancers) to have a great time. Jessi is a complete star!! She had to step in a month before the wedding when our original DJ, who was also fantastic, had a family emergency. From the start Jessi was available to answer any questions, and really get to know what I wanted at my wedding. She listened to what I like and don't like and we had great conversations. She went above and beyond helping give announcements day of and helping my uncle with the ceremony as he's never officiated before. She put everyone at ease day of, and played fantastic music. The relationship started out on the right foot. The DJ we specifically selected seemed to be very interested in providing a good experience, and we had a few calls to align on tastes. Unfortunately that individual had a family conflict and we had a replacement DJ. That DJ then contracted COVID the day before the wedding, and a third DJ was put in his place. We were already hesitant about our replacement. The last second change provided to be detrimental to our experience. The DJ made a number of errors. Our DJ (Cordett) did not bring the right equipment, so half of our audience could not hear the ceremony. He played the incorrect song for our cake cutting. He made an incorrect announcement of parent speeches, which forced my parents to make an awkward impromptu speech that also offended my wife's parents. The worst came when Cordett began playing music that was nowhere close to our requests. Instead of accepting his error, he made excuses about not being able to download a Spotify playlist. He was then rude to my wife (THE BRIDE) when she asked him to shift to different music. We reached out to Evan Hoffman from Groove, who had been our main point of contact throughout booking, about these issues. Instead of admitting fault, Evan proceeded to make excuses as to why these errors occurred. No one admitted fault throughout this process, and few concessions were offered. I would only recommend Groove, if you have no other options. If you do, expect plenty of issues to arise. read more

We cannot say enough amazing things about Groove and DJ Clare's flexibility and skill in transitioning to a virtual wedding! We recommend them wholeheartedly for either traditional DJ services (what we originally hired them for) or for administering and DJ'ing Zoom weddings (the end result!). I found Carrie thru a mutual friend and it was one of the best decisions my now husband and I made. We were looking for an affordable DJ that could handle our new wave/indie/hip hop song requests (with some traditional songs thrown in; it's not a wedding if Celebration doesn't play) and no smoke or lasers. Not only is Carrie super cool and easy to chat with she just gets it. We only had to give her a small list of requested songs besides the important ones (first dance, cake cutting) and she exceeded our expectations. 2 weeks later I still have guests telling me how awesome the music was; even our catering staff was dancing and have told me it's some of the best wedding music they've heard. Yay for Carrie!! OK, first things first, I used to DJ with Carrie years & years ago (about 12 I think?) at the Fireside Bowl.. so I may be slightly biased. BUT- choosing our wedding DJ was still not an easy decision. The music was one of the most important parts of the wedding to us and I honestly believe the DJ can make or break a wedding. I definitely had a "vision" if you will of what I wanted, my fiance felt just slightly less particular. We had a woodland theme, vintage inspired wedding and I wore a 1960's short wedding dress to which I wanted a mix of 60's rock (late Beatles, Love, Zombies, etc.) and 90's indie rock (Pavement, Pixies, REM) to compliment. I was really concerned that whoever we chose would feel like they had to play "danceable songs", when I wanted the focus to be more on just good music, similar to stuff I would listen to at home, with friends over, and with less emphasis on trying to make sure you could dance to it. I had also recently been to a couple iPod weddings and though there were decent tunes played it still lost a little of the magic on me. There is nothing quite like someone hand picking records and that sound of the needle hitting the vinyl... well, there's just nothing comparable. So, when I heard Carrie was still DJing and had coincidentally branched into DJing weddings, I thought it might be too good to be true. I knew she had great taste so that eliminated the unknown factor, there was also the little personal connection which I loved, but... would she come all the way to Berkeley, CA to play our intimate event? Because we started planning a year in advance I thought there just might be a chance. And thankfully, she said yes! The night went off without a hitch. I had sent a pretty lengthy list of songs I wanted played before hand, to which Carrie replied she already had most of the songs on vinyl, and the ones she didn't have she said she could get without a problem. So easy! Our processional & recessional songs were timed perfectly, amazingly even without a rehearsal! And although we hadn't exactly asked her to, Carrie pretty much ended up MCing the evening, keeping everything running smoothly & on schedule, and also remaining incredibly patient & flexible (like when I decided I was ready to throw my bouquet that very moment, even though it was totally out of the order I had given Carrie before the wedding). The music was AMAZING and we received compliments all night long. But probably the best thing about Carrie was her positive & infectious energy. She wore a little smile throughout the night, and pretty much danced to every song, solo style, while she played records, encouraging people to get up and have fun on the dance floor. We also really appreciated that she did not succumb to the requests for more "danceable" songs a la YMCA and Celebrate Good Times which were actually asked for by a couple of my in-laws who will remain nameless... :) All in all, I am so, so, so very pleased I was able to get Carrie to come out to California to DJ what is undoubtedly one of the most important nights of my life. It was easily one of the best parts of our wedding and not only impressed our friends but both of our families as well who weren't expecting to hear so many great 60's and 70's folk rock jams. I will never forget finally getting something to eat and taking a seat and hearing an amazing Neil Young song I hadn't heard in a long time (which we hadn't even requested!) and thinking to myself, this is just ...perfect. Carrie was our DJ at our recent wedding. It was a pleasure to spend time with her prior to the wedding as we collaborated about what our music for our ceremony, cocktail hour and dance party would be. She was so laid back but so thorough that I had absolutely nothing to worry about as far as music as we headed in to our wedding day. She was available to us whenever we needed her and even helped us choose some songs that we were dragging our feet about. Carrie really "got us" and our personalities including our weird family situations. She worked with us and our budget and we felt like we could really ask her anything as we were knee deep in planning. Fast forward to our actual wedding day: Carrie did an excellent job reading the dance floor (including when we wanted our first dance cut off as we aren't skilled or excited about dancing in front of 150 people). We didn't really want top 40 so she chose a great selection of soul, classics, and didn't mind playing some unorthodox choices like the Buzzcocks and Fugazi at appropriate times. We all danced ourselves to exhaustion and had a great time. One friend tried to do the splits, another friend danced until she fell over and we honestly heard "best wedding DJ ever" from our guests weeks after our wedding was over. Needless to say, I highly recommend Carrie and her DJ services especially if you want to create the greatest dance party ever. We first heard of Groove is in the Heart a few years ago at a wedding in Chicago. Two things stood out, first it was lady DJ, don't see that very much, and second that the dance floor was full the whole time. Several years later we found Carrie is still a DJ and asked her to DJ our wedding in the suburbs which she had no problem traveling to Plainfield, IL. My husband and me love music, so having a good DJ was important to us. We wanted to make sure people were dancing all the time to the kind of music we love so it was a combination of current and 80's alternative music. Carrie met with us prior to the wedding to review everything we spoke about on the phone when we first hired her. She provided music prior to the wedding, for the ceremony (which included coordinating with our friend that would be singing at our wedding), cocktail hour, dinner and most importantly to dance. We told her our favorite artists and what kind of music we wanted to be played at the different times but also trusted her to know what we liked and to make sure it all flowed. I'm a bit of a music snob--I like what I like, and I wanted the music at the biggest event of my life, my wedding, to be special, start to finish. My wife and I mostly agree on musical selections, but more importantly, we agree on what we dislike. We wanted to music to be the driving force of our special day, and we didn't want the music to simply make us happy, we hoped it would make our entire guest list have a ball. Carrie delivered on all fronts. We met about a month before the event to discuss options, and she listened attentively as she gave feedback for us. Together we decided on the big songs (first dance, aisle song, parents' dance) as well as the general tone of the dance floor songs. The whole wedding felt like it had a narrative created by the song selection. Her impeccable taste helped affirm some of our choices while reminding us of songs we'd forgotten. She steered us toward cool songs that everyone would know while keeping the ear-cheese out. And she respected the many personalities that would be at the wedding. My dad loves 60s music, and she mixed some of his favorite classics in seamlessly. I have some younger friends, too. They got to request songs without ever taking the event over. THE BEST DJ. We had DJ WindyTimmy and he played the best music throughout our whole wedding on 6/8/19. The dance floor was PACKED the whole night and even his song choices during cocktails and dinner had people coming up to me asking where we found him. Look no further, seriously. Carrie DJ'd my wedding and, years later, people STILL comment on how good she was. I've referred her to tons of other people and they always come back raving about her. As they should. Hands down, she's got the best taste in music. She's so knowledgeable and easy to work with. Aside from a few requests, we just told her the vibe we wanted and left the rest up to her. It was so nice having one less thing to stress about while planning our wedding because we just knew she'd do an amazing job- and she did! She's really just the coolest and if you're considering hiring anybody else- you should stop that right now. Also, I should say, at one point someone knocked into the cake table and the whole thing started teetering back and forth -like a slow motion scene in a movie, where everybody just stared- waiting for this huge cake to fall over- and Carrie jumped out from the DJ booth and caught it before it could fall.
