We absolutely loved DJ John San Juan! He did my sister and brother-in-law's wedding years ago and I was so happy he was available for ours in the fall of 2024. John met with us ahead of time, took our lengthy list of songs and asked questions about the guests' tastes in genres (and any songs that he shouldn't play). John announced us as newlyweds when we came into the reception and accommodated our request to fade out our first dance a little early so we didn't have to dance to the entire song (we're not great dancers). The flow of music the entire night was great and everyone danced until the very end. There wasn't any lull - John kept the mood upbeat and positive. Guests could have danced all night thanks to the tone set by John. My family is from Oklahoma and big on two-stepping, so he needed to be able to spin old country, 80s, and some 60s/70s era music. Everyone at the reception told us how much they enjoyed the music and continued to tell us for weeks following the reception. We wanted a party and a celebration, and that's what he gave us. DJ John San Juan hit everything we requested and kept the party going all night. My recommendation is to have him play some classic contemporary Jazz at dinner and then let him play the hits all night long. One of the best parts of working with John is that he is not an overbearing wedding DJ. Some DJ's do have a hard job of having to generate a party out of people that are not very good at it. So, they are constantly on the Mic. After a while that can go to their heads. This was not the deal with John. If you know what your doing (able to party) then DJ John is the perfect complement. I've known John for many years going back to when he was in my friend's boyfriend's band and when he dj'd weekly at a local watering hole. Back then, I had the idea that this guy would DJ my wedding someday. Fast forward, to my wedding planning. I had a specific angle that I was going for. I was even attempting to DJ the wedding myself. Fortunately, my now husband snapped me into reality and told me to reach out to John. I did and John was more than willing to come to Detroit for our nuptials. From our first conversation, the stress of a music playlist that would give the wedding the nostalgic party vibe melted away. We never once worried again about the music that John would play. John naturally had a series a questions for songs that were musts and songs that were "no's". Many times at the wedding and after, we have heard how wonderful the mix of music was. My mom was impressed, thinking that we would only play rock and techno music. We had everything from 60's - 90's, British Invasion to New Wave to Brit Pop. I should add that the day of our wedding the temperature was the second hottest day of the year. Our venue did not have AC and the giant fans only helped so much. Throughout all this, John kept his suit jacket on, a smile on his face, and friendly demeanor when Guests approached him for song suggestions. "John dj'd my 40th birthday party for about 75 people. He took time and care in putting together the playlist after getting to know my musical tastes. We worked with many wonderful vendors who helped to make our wedding a fabulous success. DJ John San Juan, however, stands out in my memory. He could not have been more fantastic. From start to finish, he was professional, helpful, and enjoyable to work with. Not only did he ease our nerves about the music in advance of the big day, but he turned our dance floor into the party of the century. He was open to our personal music suggestions, and worked with us to create an amazing playlist that all of our guests (regardless of age) could enjoy. Not to mention, he filled in the gaps and understood how to read the crowd so that we could focus on our dance moves. It is worth mentioning that our wedding was at a modern venue with very high ceilings, one that could potentially create acoustical problems. John, however, did his homework and prepared for the event so that there weren't any issues. Whether it be coordinating with other vendors or securing the right equipment, he was more than capable. Finally, I would like to address the issue of DJ v. band. I know that a lot of people think that if you want great music at a wedding, you need to hire a band. In fact, when I told some friends that we had gone the DJ route, they were surprised and I could tell they didn't agree our decision. That all changed within the first five minutes on the dance floor. DJ John San Juan converted a lot of band people that night...I think the turning point was when "Run Around Sue" came on, but I can't really be sure... Regardless, every single friend and family member, especially those who had expressed doubt, brought it up to me after the fact and have continued to do so...DJ John San Juan made the night more fun than any band could have! Using his persuasive radio voice, he was instrumental in making announcements and advising our guests that the wedding was about to begin and to be seated. He is simply the best, so easy to work with, professional, timely, flexible, fun - we could not have asked for more. Working with John as a pleasure and was also stress-free. When we first met with him, we expressed our interest in having a long list of specific songs, which he respected, he also made great recommendations and did a great job of mixing music genres for our guests of a wide variety of ages. If I had to pick just one of our wedding vendors to have on a deserted island, it would definitely be JSJ. First, he has top-notch musical taste and would always keep things exciting. Second, he is such a pleasure to be around and so easy to work with! After a few of our pre-wedding meetings, I considered firing him, simply so we could invite him as a guest. Hell, I might have traded my fiance for him if he wasn't already married himself. JSJ has become a staple among our group of friends, having DJ'd no less than FIVE of our weddings and even the weddings of a few acquaintances. We recently hired John San Juan to DJ our wedding for 180 guests. He was the best! I gave him a list of the songs that we wanted him to play and he played all of them throughout the evening. I have jumped off the bench and gotten into the Yelp game because of John. His fantastic work thawed the icy stalemate between me and non-anonymous Yelp reviews. John was recommended by several friends who had attended weddings that he DJ'd, and we jumped on board. First, he set up a meeting to just sit and talk about music- this was an extra step that we really enjoyed so we could get on the same page. He is judgment free about it all- and I turned it into a bit of a therapy session for me as I plumbed the depths of my soul to try to answer "what kind of music do you like?" John is professional and he loves music. He likes his job and takes it seriously. When you have that, you know that you are going to get a great product every time- and you do not need to think twice about it. We wanted someone who loved music more than us and had been around enough wedding dance floors to know how to get everyone involved. He nailed it. His professionalism was what really set him apart on game day- in the flurry of things going on, he took initiative and worked with the other vendors and planners and anyone else with an opinion, to get everything just right- and he flawlessly executed all of the moving parts. We initially planned on just giving him carte blanche for the playlist, but then some "must-plays" bubbled up and a song list of suggestions was created. He read our minds and seamlessly played everything and read the crowd and massaged the rest of the playlist. We got plenty of different compliments about our wedding- but everyone commented on how they could not believe how great the dance floor was and the music that kept things going continuously. Considering the ease of working with him, his wedding day know-how, his great positive attitude, overall likeability, and topped off by his encyclopedic love of music- giving him five stars is the least I can do.
