DJ Purple rocks the karaoke house! His DJ'ing is phenomenal, and he keeps the fun, fast- paced vibe going with not only his saxophone playing, but various other instruments to accompany singers. Adding to the ambiance are his strobe lights and smoke machines that light up and go off with the music. He will also toss out the occasional inflatable guitars for performers to "play" while singing. His system is user- friendly, and his songbooks (both hard- copy and online) are easy to access/ organized. He's been around for ages and has quite the following. He even has a few slow song remixes, like Adele and Celine, although primarily higher energy beats to keep the party going! If you haven't, please check him out. One of the things I miss most during this pandemic is karaoke. DJ Purple's Zoomaroke comes close to the real deal. DJ Purple is currently offering free public karaoke sessions on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. You need a computer and a phone in order to participate and DJ Purple walks you through the setup. The other participants in the karaoke session I attended were all super supportive and friendly. I felt like we were cheering each other on the whole time. Before I knew it, four hours had passed. I really had a great time and plan on attending on a monthly basis. My only misgiving is that the sessions are livestreamed, recorded, and posted later. I feel like there should be a disclaimer or a "this session is being recorded" notification prior to joining the Zoomaroke session. I understand this is DJ Purple's way of advertising and paying the bills, but it can still be nerve-racking, especially for those of us who are camera-shy and don't want it to be recorded and immortalized for all time. I'm not going to tell you which post I'm in, but if anyone manages to find the post and wants to watch through over four hours of karaoke, so be it. Last, but not least: DON'T FORGET TO TIP THE DJ. I can't even imagine how much effort/work it takes to host a karaoke event, let alone a VIRTUAL one. Not only is DJ Purple syncing the music with you, but he's also DJ'ing, playing the saxophone live along with an eclectic mix of other instruments (harmonica, kazoo, cowbell, etc) AND also dealing with everyone's technological issues which are a given in the virtual sphere. My wife and I got married last month, and having DJ Steve "Purple" Hays host our wedding was amazing! My wife and I both love karaoke, but it's your wedding day and you want the day to be perfect, so deciding to have karaoke for most of your wedding reception is a bit of a gamble, but it was a great gamble! I had seen Steve perform several entertaining karaoke shows over the years and I knew he would make sure everyone would have a blast, and he did not disappoint! It was so great having our friends and family enjoy the karaoke and enjoy Steve's talent! One of the biggest silver linings for me during this pandemic was discovering DJ Purple's Zoomaroke. Joining the online party from time to time has uplifted my spirits, kept me singing and dancing, and helped me connect with others around the country who love karaoke as much as I do. I never thought that I would refer to a karaoke dj as a true artist, but DJ Purple (Steve) breaks the mold. He arranges the songs to make them compliment each other and keep up the mood. Five stars isn't enough for DJ Purple! I had the pleasure of stumbling across his show at Tupelo and it is far and away the best karaoke experience I've ever witnessed. Things that put DJ Purple Dance Karaoke heads above the rest: 1) He respects the idea of a playlist and keeping the party going. You aren't going to hear 80s Whitney and have the whole bar singing and dancing only to have a seven-minute Tool song come out of nowhere and send half the bar to the bathroom. You'll get pumped, stay pumped, and feel his flow. 2) You will most definitely feel like a rockstar with lighting effects and a fog machine. No hunching over a screen to sing to yourself; bring your A-game and perform, friends! DJ Purple is there to back you up and make you sound your best so just go for the gold. 3) EPIC SAX SOLOS MADE TO ORDER. 4) DJ Purple cares about one thing and one thing only: karaoke. He clearly explains everything in writing at his booth and is way too busy killing it and giving everyone the karaoke experience of their dreams to answer questions. If you need help, ask someone you saw perform, I'm sure they'd be happy to show you the ropes if you've never done karaoke before. The awesomeness of a DJ Purple night at Slate or anywhere else really speaks for itself (karaoke, saxophone, gold jumpsuit), but people may not be aware that he also does private events and it is ... incredible. We hired him for our wedding, and the experience has been the #1 thing (maybe the only thing?!) that our guests have talked about since. I don't know how to describe it without sounding hyperbolic. It was approximately a thousand times more fun than just regular dancing. Everyone got super into it, even folks who aren't accustomed to doing karaoke. DJ Purple somehow manages, night after night, to orchestrate an epic dance party where there just happens to be someone singing into a microphone at any given time. I've been a loyal DJ Purple enthusiast since 2008 and every *single* time I've gone has been a ridiculous, expectations-shattering blast. Take all the best things about a dance party and all the best things about karaoke, subtract all the awkward stuff (cough - long ballads - cough), and that's what you get with any of DJ Purple's shows. DJ Purple himself is one of the most passionate folks you'll ever witness in action - he's an incredible musician/vocalist and won't hesitate to rescue a struggling singer with brilliant backup vocals (I've seen him boost the vocals track when things are dire) or a long musical interlude with any number of musical instruments he conjures seemingly instantaneously out of thin air - tambourine, triangle, harmonica, kazoo, cowbell... and of course the saxophone. I've been singing with DJ Purple since the Jack's days, and it's always been an amazing time. Several friends have over the last few years hired him for birthdays and events, and they are, hands down, the best parties of the year. So imagine my surprise when I reach out the week of my birthday, asking on the off chance if he is available that Friday, and within an hour get confirmation that he is. What crazy luck! Being an awful planner, I didn't really give him much guidance. Just a venue and the contact info of Jason, the guy running the show over at the Armory Club, where we rented out the basement. DJ Purple gets there about two hours before I do to get set up, and he and Jason build out the room for Optimum Karaoke Radness (OKR), bringing over a stage from the Armory in the process. I don't want him to just perform at every party I ever attend going forward, I want him to plan all of my parties for ever and ever until I die an old man with a karaoke mic in my hand. What can I say I have been going to DJ Purple's Dance karaoke for over 10 years and it never disappoints me! I follow him to San Francisco and I live in the South Bay because he is the best karaoke DJ around. He offers something that no one else can beat. DJ Purple is the best! Everyone gets to sing, and every song is upbeat. So many other KJs play favorites and have books full of slow depressing songs that make you want to kill yourself. DJ Purple only has fun songs. DJP adjusts the levels for every singer to make them sound their best. Other KJs start a song and then disappear for a smoke. DJP never moves from behind his board the entire night. Add in the sax, kazoo and cowbell and you have a really fun show. The best metric of how good DJ Purple is was his birthday last December. A bus load of people from SF came down to San Jose on a Friday night to celebrate and sing for DJP's birthday. Anybody that can get 50 SFers to show up in San Jose has some serious talent. read more

I didn't realize how many things a karaoke DJ can do to make every karaoke singer have an amazing time. He has a full-on equipment set-up and knows how to make it work magic. But most amazingly off all, he is a killer sax player, and during breaks in the lyrics, he whips out his horn and wails monster solos over the music. When booking him for our party, he was very cool to deal with. DJ Purple runs what is easily the best karaoke show I've ever been to. He turns people into rockstars. He gets the crowd pumped up. He joins in with sax, harmonica, cowbell, even kazoo. His song book is heavily curated and mostly only contains upbeat, danceable songs. Even if I only get a few songs in on a particular night, I always have so much fun, and I'm always a little sad when 1:30am rolls around and it's time to pack it in. Besides that, I found a real community at his events. Always a good mix of regulars and new people, and the regulars are always so friendly and looking to meet more people to bring into the fold. WOW. Just wow. Tempted to leave it there but let me elaborate on the Wow factor behind DJ Purple karaoke. I was introduced to DJ Purple Karaoke on a Thursday night at Slate bar in the mission. I was invited by a friend who hadn't really checked it out before himself so neither of us quite knew what to expect. Even if we had gone in with high hopes and expectations for the evening, they would have been blown out of the water. I would have been happy with a basic evening of bad pop songs sung by bad singers backed by really bad synthesized audio. Instead, we got a Beyonce concert production. Now Beyhivers, you may be asking yourself how could this reviewer write such blasphemous words that would compare a karaoke night to her royal highness Beyonce. Well, we got live (LIVE!) instrument solos, we got explosive and fiery special effects, we got dancing and we got a spot on rendition of Formation by my partner. Who I find more attractive than Beyonce but only because he's a man. So yes, it was the Beyonce experience for the price of drinks and tips. Even before karaoke began I was impressed with DJ Purple's branding and attention to detail. The song books had his branding as did his pens and song requests cards. The latter were printed in color on glossy paper. It's the little things that get me excited. And also the big things like a freaking saxophone solo during my performance of Dancin' On My Own by Robyn! Ever since I first came across the DJ Purple experience at Rudy's in Palo Alto, CA, I've been hooked. Where to begin... Steve, Aka DJ PURPLE, is one of the greatest talent I know. He makes the karaoke VERY fun and interactive. He doesn't just put the song on and watch...
