smokey, charred, saucy, and scrumptious. I'm not a vegetarian, but I could happily eat that as my meal. The brûlée also felt special with a coffee profile. My husband's old-fashioned was very booze forward--I don't think he minded, but it definitely lacked subtlety. The restaurant is beautiful and the presentation is lovely. My only ring is the service. It was attentive, but it lacked warmth.

Visited for a quick lunch when my brother and sister in law were in town. We shared fish tacos, Birria tacos, crab guac, and churros. Everything was delicious but the fish tacos were my favorite. The service was really fast and the ambiance was super cute! I definitely want to come back to try more of their menu.

In DC, looking for a memorable dinner experience and chose dLeña. The ambiance is excellent! Because we did not have a reservation, we sat at the bar. I enjoyed my food more than my husband enjoyed his. My favorite thing that I had was the corn empanadas - - I would come here again and again to eat these. They were absolutely delicious plain. They were also absolutely delicious with the chimichurri sauce! I also ate the birria de hongo tacos. The birria gave it a smoky flavor. All of the flavors of the various ingredients mixed together really well, but I would still try something different if I came back here. My husband had the Wagyu beef empanadas. He loved how full they were in terms of content on the inside, but did not enjoy them enough overall that he would want to come here again.

Was told to try saddity Latin and that's what I'll do! This place is beautiful, a lovely spot to go on date night, if you will. We went for lunch and they have an express lunch menu where you receive an appetizer, main and a dessert; this, in my opinion is the best bang for your buck. Plus, they really try to get you in and out in an hour, should you have to go back to work. I got the lobster tortilla soup, Salmon Zarandeado and gelato. The soup tasted phenomenal, the salmon was cooked to perfection and the gelato (I believe it was salted caramel) wasn't too sweet. I think the presentation is beautiful and the flavors are on point; although, I would not be able to bring my partner as he would leave hungry. The service was nice; although, towards the end of the meal I felt rushed as they needed to prepare for dinner.

I went here a few years ago for brunch and was not impressed at all. I was told to try it again but for dinner. I finally went back for dinner and my husband and I were so happy we did. Dinner is amazing. He got the branzino and I got the American Waygu that came with three toppings and some blue corn tortillas. For dessert we got the espresso crème brûlée. We will definitely go back but only for dinner. I'm not sure why the brunch can't be as good as their dinner.

Came last night before a comedy show at the Capital One Arena and OMG...10/10 hands down I have no notes. We went in right as they opened, on a Friday at 5 pm, and there was already a line! The reservations were full, but we were offered a seat either at the bar or outside. Luckily it was a beautiful day so we took a seat outside. They started us off with a sweet hibiscus flavored juice as a palate cleanser which was super refreshing. The left side of the menu had appetizers and shareables, while the right side had entrees. We ordered the short rib tacos, pork belly, wagyu empanadas, and seafood enchiladas. Everything had a beautiful bright orange sauce on it and made it look like it would be spicy but it wasn't! I think it's their signature guajillo sauce and it was VERY good, super creamy. Seafood enchiladas: This was my fav. Might have been because it was extremely hungry and it was my first bite. Definitely best when eaten warm, as the cheese is gooiest and the seafood inside is hot. I wasn't sure how the salad was going to be but it added a perfect refreshing and acidity to balance out the creamy sauce. Wagyu empanadas: Much gooey-er and cheesier than expected, but also a hit! Came with a decent amount of beef inside. Comes with the orange sauce and a chimichurri, which I think was a good idea because given how cheesy and creamy the filling already was, the chimichurri was a nice balance as well. Pork belly: Melts as soon as you cut into it. The Asian in me low key wanted a giant bowl of rice with this so that I could soak up all the sauce and veggies. Pretty fatty so if you're not a fan of that you might not like this. Short rib tacos: These were loaded, not with meat but with tons of crunchy topping (maybe fried carrots?) Could have done with slightly less crunch but overall still good. The orange sauce on the bottom had a peanuty flavor which I thought added a unique kick. Also, we were surprised at how quickly the food came out. We were in and out in under an hour. Our server Rebecca was also extremely nice. Will def be back if in the area. Highly recommend all around!

Love DLeña's express lunch! Great deal for 3 courses - $28. Typically not busy and you get great food and service. We started with the queso fundido which was tasty and flavorful and the guacamole which was fresh 2nd course were fish tacos and DLeña burger. I enjoyed my burger which was seasoned impeccably. My colleague really likes her fish tacos. By the 3rd course we were stuffed but managed to take 2 bites of both desserts which were great. Came here for brunch while on a staycation in DC. I would suggest getting a rideshare, taking the Metro, or finding a nearby parking garage because street parking is VERY limited in the area. Now, dLena was an experience. It's a Mexican restaurant that specializes in its talked about brunch. We made reservations ahead and were greeted by pleasant staff who escorted us to our table. We were presented with the menu...I thought I had to choose what I wanted to get...little did I know that the menu WAS everything we were getting To be honest, there were roughly 17 items (around 16 for us since I am not a fan of mushrooms and that was one of the dishes) with each one bringing a unique, complex, tasting experience. Some I liked, some I didn't, but there were none that I found outright unappealing. The staff were pleasant, professional, and described every item that was brought to the table, which we really appreciated. The manager came to our table due to a misunderstanding with the party next to us and was so understanding and apologized, which we really appreciated. The ambiance was busy, but chill at the same time, it was a great vibe. All in all, I WILL BE BACK to dLena!

Been here twice - first was for a happy hour, second for dinner. Both times the service has been great, the wait staff are super kind and accommodating of food allergies. Kind of a dim lights vibe with a wraparound bar and table seating, as well as a basement area with a bar and live music (you can also order food downstairs!). Very vibey, and my friend loved their mezcal drinks. We tried the corn and wagyu empanadas and both were excellent. The guacamole was also great, but I might pass on the queso next time - lovely presentation, but just isn't my thing. The salsa that came with it was incredible, though! My entree was the pescado tacos. They were excellent, though a little heavy on the sauce, in my opinion. I want to try the birria tacos if I make it to dLeña again.

I was very excited to try out D'Leñas bottomless brunch for my boyfriend's birthday trip. We were coming in from NYC and made reservations way in advance. The menu looked astounding and my bf LOVES Mexican. Firstly, the drinks were plenty to chose from. Multiple mimosa flavors. Micheladas called my attention after never seeing that on a bottomless menu. The michelada and the margarita were the best. The mimosa tasted like really cheap bubbles that almost tasted like beer. They were sitting at the bar in jugs not on ice I think maybe that would help. I would approach this brunch soooo differently had I known the way. They bring out everything on the menu. The best items in our opinion were at the beginning. The skillets at the end are huge heavy portions and the flavors get repetitive. Best things on the bottomless menu are the FRUIT COCKTAIL WOW surprised us soooo much. The fish tacos delishhhhh. The Cesar salad was yummy. All the tacos were good. The steak and eggs delicious. The chicken wand waffles was good! Overall the experience was great. They were super busy but we were treated well and the birthday surprise was so nice! Thank u for that !! My friend heard so many great things about DLeña, so she made reservations for brunch. We were about 20 mins early and decided to see if they will sit us, and they did. We were greeted by two nice ladies and they walked us to our table. Our waiter was very professional, knowledgeable and attentive. He recommended the bottomless brunch, we got to try all the items on the menu and we did bottomless drinks as well. The restaurant had upbeat music with a stylish decor. The food was ok, they were a few choices on the menu that we really liked. We will come back when it's not brunch to try the regular menu. I really wanted to have an amazing experience here as I love so many elements that go into this new restaurant. I don't feel we received any of the service or excitement I was expecting, especially for a birthday. I had seen some craft cocktails on their IG but didn't know which ones. The server was so absent I wasn't able to ask. We ordered a $125 tomahawk medium rare, the server cut it up like he hated being there. No fanfare at all. It was also cooked medium-medium well but we didn't send it back. The sides were great though and when the wrong side came out, it was corrected gratis. We were left with dirty appetizer plates and forks and no mention was made that it was for our main course. I mentioned it was my fiancé's birthday but nothing more was mentioned of it. We didn't even get a dessert menu. I also checked out the downstairs and got an awkward vibe that didn't feel inviting. Came for brunch and was underwhelmed based on what I saw and read on yelp. My friends and I went w the bottomless brunch option - the entire party must participate or do a la carte. Happy we did bc the items sold separately are overpriced for what it was taste/flavor wise. Presentation was great but food was sadly underwhelming. Drinks were not strong, practically juice. Literally, taco bell has more flavor smh. But seriously it would have been better visiting an authentic hole in the wall Mexican spot bc you are just paying for the restaurant aesthetic otherwise. read more

Not to be dramatic but I had the most incredible dining experience of my life downstairs in Roja. First off, they have live music downstairs. This is a small lounge so it does get very loud, however, absolutely such a vibe. Second, Nancy. Yes, one person can make all the difference in a restaurant. Drinks were great but the service was absolutely incredible. Not sure what they put in the water at Dlena but that girl can handle a room. Also shout out to her staff helping her out. First time at this place and I must say highly recommend! The bartender, Tabitha, was amazing. Made the best mezcal margarita that I've had from a restaurant. I mentioned that I love a nice speakeasy vibe and she recommended that I check out the downstairs area and which was amazing with live music. Justice was also a super cool dude. He was busting out drinks like it was going out of style. I tried the empanadas and some sort of a carrot vegetable medley. Delicious. I've already told my friends about this place. Absolutely delicious. From wonderful tequila concoctions to delectable, small and large dishes, D'Lena certainly delivered a fantastic meal. Tuna tartare guacamole was exceptional, as well as the pork belly and grilled octopus tacos. The flavors in these dishes were remarkably well-layered. The boneless ribeye was sizzling and perfectly seasoned, while the shrimp Diablo had a depth of flavors that are worthy of high marks. The great surprise was a lobster street corn dish that was offered by the waiter to pair with the steak and shrimp, and it was phenomenal. It's quickly becoming my favorite fancy Mexican restaurant in the district (sorry Oyamel)! The mercado (spicy) marg is a must as is the guac with tuna tartare - I could probably eat that as a meal in and of itself. The branzino had a wonderful subtle wood fire grilled flavor and the enchiladas with shrimp and blue crab were good too. I was a little underwhelmed with the grilled oysters as they were still a bit gritty. We enjoyed the crepe cake and creme brulee, also washed down with more margs of course. The bar lounge downstairs is now open and looks fun for dates or small groups! read more

A sophisticated take on Mexican gastronomy. Truly one of the best restaurant experiences I've ever had. The food is amazing and the menu includes a variety of options. The service, ambiance, and decor is unmatched. They have a lounge downstairs that wasn't yet open when I went but I'm excited to visit that next time I'm in DC. My menu favorites: enchiladas, corn empanadas, guacamole, Cameron tacos (I got them with corn tortillas), ensalada de kale, and the layered crepe desert. Next time I'll be trying the grilled chicken as that looked delicious as well as the corn cake desert. The only item I didn't enjoy was the cauliflower. It held a lot of water so the taste was bland. This was one of the worst experience I've ever had at an establishment. To begin with the seating was horrible we were shoulder to shoulder with other people. Next I ordered drinks the straws were broken and the server said that's the only type of straws they had. I ordered the Tomahawk because I like steak but also I wanted the experience of table side, we didn't even get that because of how horrible the seating was. Last part I ordered margaritas and they did not bring it out until I was almost leaving. I'm honestly very disappointed I would never come back or suggest this place. Also server was so bad he not once asked how everything was for us or checked up to see if we needed anything. read more

Every dish was fabulous. Presentation was spectacular, everything was beautiful. Using a wood oven for everything is inventive and gave everything a unique taste. Short rib tacos had a nice sauce with them. Same with enchiladas. Queso was tasty and accompanied salsas added several nice options for hotness. My sister and I came here to test the venue out for our corporate event. Thank goodness we got Jeff. Let me say he was the not unprofessional bartender with the most unstable emotional mentality I saw play out in public. He made a horrible margarita drink that was too sweet that we had to return it. We pre-warned that it shouldn't be sweet and when it was, we returned it as promised. He was offended and flailed his hands when I asked for an old fashioned. Can one person not like a margarita and and old fashioned at the same time? No, not according to Jeff. He made the most drama that I wanted a dry drink instead of the poorly made sweet margarita. When noticing his immaturity, I simply asked for the check to leave and said I would pay for th margarita I took one sip out of. He refused. He wanted his tip. So when I asked for my drink of preference, he was annoyed once and upcharged me twice. He did not greet us out after making direct eye contact and ignoring us. His service was awful. went to dleña last night and loved it! First of all, the restaurant is super cute, they've done a great job with decorating and ambiance -- great spot for a date night. My friend and I got the guacamole de bonito (guac and tuna tartar) and it was delicious! Highly recommend--great way to make a guacamole starter more delicious and filling. I got the medio pollo al Carbon and it was so good! The chicken was cooked perfectly and the spices were excellent. My friend got short rib al carbon and damnnnnn it was SOOO good. You didn't even need a knife -- best short rib I've ever had. We didn't do cocktails but those looked great too. And the service was very friendly and attentive. 5 stars is not enough for this restaurant! I celebrated my friend's 30th birthday and they made sure everything was perfect! Special shout-out to Kimberly at the hostess stand for being the REALIST! We began the night with dinner upstairs in the main dining room. The ambience is perfect felt like I was in Tulum. Our waitress was super attentive and sweet! We started with the chips and guacamole tortilla soup and the Corn empanadas as an appetizer! The soup was delicious and the presentation was amazing, the empanadas were SO GOOD and they were perfectly sized. For our main course I had the Short Rib al Carbon it was very crispy but full of flavor and very filling my friend had the Medio Pollo Carbon that was seasoned perfectly! We each liked our cocktails so we headed downstairs to the Roja lounge. Again the vibes were great! The tequila flight was STRONG but very nice. The restaurant allowed me to have a special cake delivered and brought it over to us for desert as everyone sang happy birthday. I had brunch here today with a friend, and let me just say, this is a gem of a place! We opted for bottomless drinks and food for $50. That was definitely the right choice because you get to try everything, and it's just such a good deal. Portions are a bit on the smaller side for food, but that's perfect. You can order as much as you want, and we did :) We both left full and happy, but not overly stuffed. Let's start with drinks and food. I started with a May May mimosa. It was very good, but a little sweet. I switched to regular mimosas and they were great. My friend started with a Bloody Mary, liked it very much, then switched to Bloody Maria, which she raved about. She also had a margarita (also included!!) and said that was excellent. We had all food items (some more than once) except for the beef tacos (we just weren't feeling that). The shrimp enchilada is fantastic!! We started with one and ended up ordering several. I love the grilled street corn; it's off the cob, which makes it so much easier to eat and, let's face it, more attractive to your companions than chomping a cob and ending up with corn in your teeth. The salmon was perfection. It comes with a side slaw salad and the bites of salmon and slaw would make a Michelin chef drool. Tuna ceviche was excellent. Churros were as my friend stated "pure heaven." On to service. The service was exceptional. Our server was Jerson. He was extremely attentive and sweet. Even masked, you could tell he was smiling so big every time he asked how we were doing. We never waited long for food and our drinks were never empty. The ambiance here is great. I love a good bar, and while we did not eat at the bar, the bar is the focal point of the dining area and quite attractive. This was brunch so I don't think the tequila lounge was open. But, downstairs is a very nice tequila lounge that I will definitely be checking out soon. I really can't say enough good things about this (new?) place. Dlena - Come here for a gorgeous environment, tasty food and the exciting suspense of never knowing where your waiter is or if you'll ever see them again! It's a constant game of hide and seek, and the waiter is always winning :) Orders went forgotten, it took hours to get chips and salsa, and our absent waiter avoided our table as if we were a Trojan horse carrying the Delta variant. He seemed completely disinterested in talking to us, let alone getting our orders right. Not sure if this was his first day or if he worked there at all ! He made me think some ghost stories really are true. We tried to get the attention of other waiters, but when our smokesignals and cries for help went unheard we knew our fate was sealed. After waiting an hour for chips, we thought about offering to help in the kitchen but what came next let us know there is danger at play. One of the guests at our table had a severe dairy allergy. She was reassured there would be no dairy in her meals. Yet, the first bite of her food contained a sizable shred of cheese detected immediately. Nice right? Not only are Dlena waiters forgetful, they're also lethal! The lack of apology tells me this mistake may have been intentional (kidding, probably not intentional but it still was frightening). While our dear friend did survive, the disappointing experience made her wish she hadn't. Oh and the best part? They charged us for chips and salsa despite it being on the unlimited brunch menu we participated in. After telling the waiter to take it off the check, he came back with them still on. Twice. Dlena. Came to Dleña the first week it opened and couldn't wait to go back. We bragged to friends and built up some suspense for what we thought would be a fabulous bottomless brunch. Don't let the $49 price tag fool you, because we made a grave mistake. The service was absolutely unforgivable. Chips and salsa took an hour, an allergy was ignored, and they overcharged us on a check, which ended up needing to be revised twice. By the time we got our second round of food, we couldn't wait to go. Ultimately, the lack of communication and bad attitude was what made this among the worst dining experiences I've ever had. Too bad for a restaurant that has good food and clearly invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in decor. I only wish my friend with a severe allergy ate the "dairy free" Birria taco that had cheese in it, and had to go to the hospital so we could have left without paying the bill. We probably wouldn't have even gotten an apology. read more

The biggest value is perhaps lunch as there are a few options around $20 that are filling and delicious; beating similar pricing for lunch at other places, but at a lesser value. The interior is characteristic of 20th century American midwest saloon. A lot of Victorian decor with mahogany wood throughout. Much of the character of the restaurant is built on this idea. The restaurant group has done a good job of preserving what seems to be original interior and exterior design from the previous occupant, the B. F. Keith's Theater. There's a downstairs which has space for private dining, and there are multiple bars indoors, an atrium, and lounge all which the latter are operated by Old Ebbitt Grill. Overall, a very good experience for good good and a history lesson.

Good food and drinks; and if you want to be treated like you're at one of those satire restaurants where you pay them to demean/insult you, then dLeña is the place for you. My fiancé and I have been to dLeña previously, more specifically to their Roja Lounge for drinks and small plates. The drinks were so good that even our friends who were from out of town insisted we go again when they were back in town. I don't remember anything standout about the service, good or bad. When we saw that they were doing a New Year's Eve dinner with live music at their Roja Lounge, we were very excited to go with some friends. I booked the reservation, but noticed there was no ability to book the Lounge so I gave them a call to enquire about their NYE event and how seating downstairs would work. I was told that the setup would be as normal downstairs and there would be no reservations, walk-in only. I pushed a little bit on seating and the host insisted that it would be first come, first serve. I thought that was a bit odd on a night as busy as NYE, but didn't think much of it past that. On NYE we arrived a few minutes early for our reservation and our table wasn't ready, we were told we could go grab a drink at the bar upstairs or go down to their Roja Lounge. We opted for the lounge to give our friends an idea where we'd be spending the rest of the night after dinner (the ambiance is amazing downstairs). We come downstairs to find every table/lounge area has a RESERVED placard on it. At this point, I was very confused as the person I talked to on the phone insisted that they would not be doing reservations in the lounge, so when we went upstairs, I enquired with the host. She explained that the tables are only for members of their 'Tequila Locker Program', I asked why that wasn't explained to me on the phone when I enquired and eventually was told, "well you don't understand these people spend 2k every 6 months." As others have mentioned in their reviews, it seems to be a common occurrence at dLeña that insinuate that you don't belong or can't afford certain things (for context we spent over a grand on food and drinks that night (dinner was pre-paid) so that really rubbed salt into the wound). After dinner we went downstairs to the bathroom and there were still quite a few tables with reserved on them that clearly weren't occupied, this was around 11pm. While I went to the bathroom my fiancé enquired with the staff downstairs about what they would do with those tables if no one showed - they said the weren't sure. In the meantime, our friends had gone upstairs and found 2 seats at the bar, we were very excited that we finally found some seats to enjoy the rest of our night at! My girlfriend and I went to order drinks and were immediately told that she could only serve people who were sitting. At this point we were done with the constant inconveniences of this restaurant and asked for a manager. We explained the series of events to the manager and were met with again with a demeaning tone about how there are some very important people here tonight and constant name dropping of who those people were (director at IBM/Director of DC Parks & Rec), as if that had anything to do with the situation. Last time I checked, my money spends the same as the Director of DC Parks & Rec. After going back and forth, the manager went downstairs and came back up to tell us he may have something downstairs for us. We followed him downstairs to find the "space" he had for us was just that, a space in the corner of the bar with no seating. He said a table may free up and they we'll need to grab it as soon as staff took the reserved sign off. We decided at this point it was just time to leave, as we would have been in competition with the numerous other parties who also wanted somewhere to sit for the night. Again, if they had just explained that the tables would be completely booked, I would have either made plans. As you can imagine, it is impossible to get into anywhere in DC the night of NYE without a reservation. We noticed the table behind us seemed to also have the impression that they would be able to sit downstairs (or at least the potential to) and were scrambling to try and find a place to continue their night elsewhere. We also overheard multiple other parties complaining about how this was just a cash grab. While I know this review most likely won't change anything, I do hope that the team takes some time to consider the experience they are providing to their patrons. I understand that NYE is an extremely challenging day in the service industry, but whoever oversees booking decisions is making everything 10x more difficult for their staff and patrons. After reading some of the other reviews where people have had similar experiences, we will not be taking this as a one off because of NYE and won't be returning. read more

I've visited this restaurant multiple times, each with its own experience. On my first visit, we sat upstairs in the main dining area. The ambiance was intimate and inviting, with soft lighting that created a cozy atmosphere ideal for a nice dinner. On another visit, we didn't have reservations and were seated downstairs. The downstairs space had a completely different vibe--much more relaxed and open, but the seating layout felt a bit awkward, especially when trying to enjoy a larger meal. Would be perfect for drinks, music, and smaller snacks. The way some of the tables and seats were positioned together or at odd angles made it a little less comfortable for a full on dining experience. However, the live music downstairs added a vibrant energy and transformed the experience into something more lively and fun, making it enjoyable on its own. As for the food, it did not let me down. We opted for a variety of dishes to share with the table, which allowed us to sample a wide range of flavors. However, the only downfall during my first visit was that the pacing of the courses was off, which was disappointing. They served the protein by itself first, and the vegetables arrived much later, which meant we couldn't enjoy them together. The vegetables felt like an afterthought and weren't as satisfying on their own. That said, the oysters were incredible--some of the best I've ever had. They were full of flavor, perfectly prepared, and a real standout of the meal. I also visited once for lunch and unfortunately, I wouldn't return for that. The lunch menu was much more limited, and most of the restaurant's best dishes were only available during dinner. I came to dLeña for brunch with friends on a Saturday, and overall, it was a decent experience but not one I'd necessarily go out of my way to repeat. We went around 11:30, so it started off pretty quiet, but as brunch picked up, it definitely got louder. The ambiance is nice though, very laid-back, chill, and a great vibe for a group brunch or celebration. We did the bottomless brunch, and one thing I really appreciated is that the bottomless food and drinks are priced separately. Not everyone in our group wanted drinks, so it was nice that we were only charged for the people who actually ordered them. The only downside is that mocktails aren't included. The food is served as small plates brought out progressively, but I do wish this had been explained better upfront. It was presented as if they would just bring items out, but it wasn't clearly communicated that we could also order anything we wanted from the menu. That made the experience feel a bit confusing. The meal started off strong. The salad was fresh, and there was a fruit/yogurt dish with agave that was honestly one of the best things we had. From there, it became hit or miss. The ceviche and chips were good, the fish tacos were solid, and I appreciated that they had some vegetarian options (though somewhat limited). The waffle and churro were highlights, but the potato hash fell flat. As the meal went on, service slowed down quite a bit. We were waiting a while for certain items (like the corn), and it felt like things just started to lag toward the end. Service overall followed a similar pattern. Strong at the beginning, but less attentive as it got busier. Overall, I'd rate it around a 7 out of 10. It's a fun spot for the experience and group setting, but the lack of clarity and inconsistency in pacing took away from it. However, my experience at this crowded place was far from enjoyable due to the the lack of seating. Finding a spot to even stand (forget sitting) was a challenge in itself, as the seating seemed to me as if it was reserved for more special guests. Also, the atmosphere was overshadowed by the unapproachable staff. The staff appeared uninterested in providing assistance. It felt like they were going through the motions without any genuine interest. Requests for assistance were met with cold responses, and it seemed like they were doing us a favor rather than providing a service. I assume that if you don't have one of their special lockers to store tequilla in then you are going to have to stand or leave. It was disheartening to see the staff prioritize certain customers over others, creating an unwelcoming and exclusive vibe. The lack of attentiveness from the staff made it challenging to fully enjoy the music or the company of friends. The overall atmosphere in the downstairs bar was not conducive to relaxation or enjoyment, which was a significant letdown. While the music was good and performed by a live band, it was difficult to fully appreciate it in such an unwelcoming environment. I would like to first start by saying I never review restaurants but my experience last night made me make an exception. My wife and I ate at Dleña and had a wonderful experience. It was our anniversary and we wanted to make a night of it so we went downstairs to the speakeasy bar for a night cap. They had live music which was great and had a really cool atmosphere. But it wasn't the food or drinks (which were great) that made me write this, but the service. I have lived in DC for many years but last night was the best service We have experienced since coming to this city. Our server Nancy was incredible and had such knowledge. We first were standing because it was first come first serve and when we told her we were celebrating our anniversary she immediately found us a table . When we asked her what she liked on the menu she said it didn't matter because it wasn't about her, it was about what we like and what kind of experience we wanted to have. She had us trying mezcal (which neither my wife nor I had ever had) and then gave us old fashions with tequila and mezcal! If that wasn't enough, she even brought us a dessert that had "Happy Anniversary" written on it. I decided to spend New Year's Eve at Dleña in NW DC based on a recommendation from the Washington Post, but my experience left much to be desired. Upon entering, I was told by a staff member that I could sit anywhere in the lounge without "reserved" signs. However, every table in the lounge had reserved signs, creating confusion from the start. After finally finding a seat at the bar, the bartender, with noticeably unpleasant breath, informed me that the seat was also "reserved." This contradicted the earlier information I received about seating options upon entering. Despite these initial setbacks, I found two available seats at the bar for myself and my cousin. To our dismay, after being told to wait "one" minute to order, the bartender never took our order. Later, I observed the same bartender speaking with a manager, who then stated that one of our seats was reserved. This was the second time we were informed of reserved seating after being seated without any initial indications. Feeling unwelcome and frustrated by the inconsistency, my cousin and I decided to leave and settled at a different bar to welcome in 2024 more tastefully. I was genuinely surprised by my most recent experience, as I've visited several times before and have always had pleasant service. Unfortunately, that was not the case this time. Upon arrival, our waiter approached us and asked what we would like to order. We inquired about the bottomless brunch option, and he informed us that it was no longer available after 1 PM, which seemed unusual given that it was still 1.5hrs prior to closing. However, this was not the main issue and we were totally fine with ordering something else if we had access to the full menu. Before we had the opportunity to ask any follow-up questions or explore what other menu options there were, our waiter walked away promptly after stating bottomless brunch was not a option. We waited approximately 20-25 minutes for him to return, but he never did. Ultimately, we decided to leave and dine elsewhere due to the lack of service. This was a very disappointing experience in terms of customer service. Fortunately, we were able to find a great alternative nearby and still enjoy our lunch. I had been eagerly anticipating a visit to dLeña, drawn in by its rustic and romantic ambiance. However, I must admit, the experience left me somewhat disappointed. The wagyu empanadas, a dish I was particularly excited about, turned out to be predominantly filled with cheese, lacking the rich, meaty flavor I was hoping for. Similarly, the wagyu fajitas, which I expected to be a highlight, were surprisingly lacking in flavor. The bell peppers were overly salted, the wagyu itself was bland, and the accompanying items did little to elevate the dish. On a positive note, the oysters were good, but the bacon jam that accompanied them was overpowering, detracting from the delicate taste of the oysters. Another aspect that detracted from the experience was having three different people check in with us while we were eating. This made the restaurant feel less relaxing and became a bit of an annoyance. Given the price point, I had expected a more memorable and flavorful experience. I had been looking forward to trying this restaurant for some time, but I'm not sure I would return. In comparison, I find myself preferring the flavors at Guapos. read more

We recently dined at this restaurant, and overall, it was a fantastic experience. Great ambience, dimmed lights, comfortable and cozy place. The flavors and quality of the food were exceptional, and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The short rib tacos were a highlight, cooked perfectly. The Guacamole was fresh and flavorful, adding a delightful touch to our dining experience. Only downside was the long waiting time. It was a bit frustrating to wait for our food, especially since we were quite hungry. However, once food arrived it was definitely worth the wait. The staff appeared a bit distracted during our visit, but they were friendly and accommodating nonetheless. It would have been even better if they were a a little more attentive to the customers needs. While the taste and quality of the dishes were excellent, portion sizes left a bit to be desired, especially considering the price. Although food was delicious, a slightly larger portion would have made the experience even more satisfying. Really beautifully decorated restaurant that is pretty unassuming from outside. At night, it's really dark inside though and the candles don't provide much light. We came to celebrate our anniversary. Our server was so nice and funny. He was really helpful in telling us which dishes were good and which weren't. He definitely made us have an enjoyable time. Their initial "shot" of non-alcoholic mezcal was delicious. Their lemonade is also really good. We tried the guacamole (delicious), wagyu fajita (cooked perfectly and absolutely melt in the mouth--they forgot to bring us our tortillas and we didn't realize this until we saw it on the menu during dessert), short rib tacos (meh, the short rib was really dry), and the broccolini (a bit over charred and too oily). For dessert, we initially tried the chocolate fondant but it was not good at all. It should be liquid in the center but it was like a cooked sponge-y bread with not much sweetness. Our server comped us a new dessert--the crepe cake. This one was slightly better but overall just average. Their desserts are not worth it, in my opinion. read more

This is the second time I'm visiting dLeña and I loved today's experience just as much as my first visit. Photos don't do justice as this place is so beautiful! The ambiance is elegant, classy, and warm. The seating at the bar is very comfortable. Excellent service by bartenders who are polite, efficient, and professional. Of course, the food here is phenomenal! My favorites from today were Wagyu Beef Tiradito, Pork Belly, and Ceviche Amarillo. I'm not a fan of steak in general, but their 30 Day Dry Aged Boneless Ribeye puts top-tier steakhouses in the DMV area to shame. Their tacos (Short Rib, Atún, and Camaróne) are perfection. Overall, there is no restaurant that can compete with dLeña currently in DC - a class act all around. If you are looking for a romantic date spot, bring your beau here! If your friends are visiting from out of town to experience DC, bring them here! No matter who you bring as your company, it will be a lovely evening filled with fabulous drinks, great food, vibrant live music, and muchas risas! read more

I had the pleasure of dining at dLeña for dinner the other night and I must say, it was an experience unlike any other. The atmosphere was very inviting and the staff was welcoming and friendly. The food was absolutely delicious, with a mix of flavors that you would rarely find at a Mexican restaurant. The portions were generous and the prices were pricey but very reasonable. We started with the Tuna Tartare Guacamole - the guac was fresh, creamy, and flavorful. The chips were crispy and perfectly salted. My friend and I had a disappointing experience at dlena in Washington DC. The restaurant was very loud, which made it difficult to enjoy our conversation. Our waitress was rude from the start, which set a negative tone for the evening. While the tuna guacamole and ceviche appetizers were good, the drinks left much to be desired. My friend disliked his drink, and no one asked if he'd like a replacement. I ordered my steak rare, but it came out well done. When I sent it back, the staff was obstinate and returned a steak that was too rare. No manager visited our table, and no compensation was offered for the mistake. The waitress's comment that "no female had ever ordered a rare steak" there before and questioning if my upbringing influenced my taste was incredibly unprofessional and offensive. Overall, dlena might be decent for appetizers, but I wouldn't recommend it given the price. The steak, even if cooked properly, didn't feel worth $63. read more

The flavors? Exceptional. The patio? Pure perfection. This review? Completely positive, reflecting our fantastic experience. I'm not even sure where to begin. While we didn't opt for the beloved classic brunch, our dinner of appetizers was both light and flavorful. We were seated promptly and decided to kick things off with sweet mango margaritas. For our meal, the Maryland crab guacamole stood out with generous crab portions and a delicious twist - crispy bread instead of chips. The burrata salad featured refreshing grilled watermelon, creamy burrata, and flavorful heirloom tomatoes. As a delightful conclusion, the rich cheesecake paired wonderfully with a scoop of ice cream on top. The presentations were visually stunning, and we enjoyed it all from their sunny, covered patio. We recently visited DLeña for brunch on a Saturday to celebrate my friend's birthday, and we were thoroughly impressed by the ambiance, the service, and the overall experience. The restaurant has a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere that made our celebration feel special. The staff were attentive and friendly, adding to the positive experience. While we felt that the food selection could be improved, the quality of the dishes we tried was excellent. Our favorite plates were the steak and eggs, chilaquiles, churros, and seasonal fruits. Each of these dishes was flavorful and well-prepared. However, we were disappointed with the fish taco, which didn't taste good at all and almost seemed like it was made from frozen fried fish. I recently visited dLeña for a dinner date, and it delivered on many fronts. The atmosphere was warm and inviting with just the right touch of romance--definitely a great setting for a date night or an intimate dinner. The service was attentive and friendly, making the experience comfortable and enjoyable. As for the food, we ended up ordering more than we could handle (eyes bigger than our stomachs moment!), but everything we tried was flavorful and well-prepared. While there wasn't necessarily one standout dish that completely wowed us, it was still a very satisfying meal overall. If you're looking for a cozy and stylish spot for a dinner out, dLeña is worth a visit.
