Get here on TUESDAY around 9:30-10:30 (sweet spot) Maybe I just got super lucky, but this DMV experience was awesome. Yes, I said it, awesome. I arrived, & waited in the line for about 3 minutes. The ladies who gave me my ticket were sweet & told me I arrived at a great time. I waited in the waiting room for 10 minutes, & my number was called. HOW COULD THIS BE!?!?! I sat at station 1 with Ms. Wright. She was so sweet & informative, I loved speaking with her. The only reason it took more than 5 minutes, was because we were enjoying the conversation! WHAT THE HECK, THIS NEVER HAPPENS! I did notice as I was leaving that the place became packed. I'm sure people have had much worse experiences here, but mine was excellent. Most DMV employees hate there life and do there best to display it in the way they treat you, NOT THIS ONE! Most DMVs take a minimum of 2 hours to get through, NOT THIS TIME! I have been here before so many times and I always left very stressed due to the wait. Last time I came here I had an appointment and it was the best thing I have ever done, in and out in less than 20 minutes it was a Saturday and the line was insanely long. Thankfully I had my appointment, so here is my tip to you make appointments! I've called many times to get an appointment for this time but they had only availability in February and my DL will expire in one week so I could not wait. I decided to get there before they open, which is 7am in weekdays. I got there at 6:23 and was second in line. I got in and out in 23 minutes!!!! Perfect for someone that did not have an appointment! The officer that helped me out was very attentive and courteous. He gave me some tips for my future renewals. The only downside was that they had only two people working there all the others spots were closed even tho there a bunch of people waiting in line. Always call to make sure they won't have different hours. This coming Monday it is a holiday and they also will be closed Saturday which I wouldn't know if I didn't call in advance. Rude. Line out front, probably 15-20 deep, just needed a booklet so my daughter could study for her learners permit. Asked everyone in line if they minded if I just peeked in to grab a drivers manual, and they all agreed. Started walking in and the security guard rudely stated I needed to wait in line to ask questions...... really? Told him my problem and he stated they were out of manuals and I should request one on line. So, Mr. Butch-boss had to put his pac-man game down for 15 seconds so I wouldn't have to wait in a 2 hour line to answer a simple question, and he was mad & rude about it. As a retired deputy sheriff who is use to always remembering that as public servants we were there to protect & serve, I hope South Carolina's other public servants take their calling and professionalism a little more seriously. The process was pretty fast but the whole experience was awful especially with the male test driver gives horrible instructions.

I cannot believe how pleasant my last experience here was. I had totally forgotten how awful my last visit was, and simply went to the DMV closest to my office after work at 4pm on a random overcast Thursday. I walked past the ridiculous amount of empty "not for DMV customer" signs again. I walked in, a man checked my documents and gave me a number. I sat down and hadn't even finished two paragraphs in the book I brought before I was called up. The DMV worker I was assigned was friendly and efficient and probably would have let me take a second picture if I asked. In and out in about 15 minutes with the promise of my new "REAL" ID to be sent in two weeks. Not as painful as I anticipated. However, the amount of paperwork needed to get the new license is ridiculous. Current and valid passport, NC driver's license and original SS card along with an additional official document with current NC address. That additional document could be a vehicle registration or property tax bill. Seriously? Y'all are the ones who tell the government where to send this stuff, don't you know where I live? read more

Plan on taking your motorcycle riding test here... go around the building, behind the Family Dollar. See the dumpster, broken glass, potholes and cracked asphalt?? Thats where the riding skills test is administered. As mentioned in other reviews, plan on 30min to 90min of waiting, at least twice. Beware- even though it is 2020, you have to print out everything (the printer they have onsite doesn't work), wait in line multiple times as no one tells you the correct nuances on the document they are looking for (start and end date on auto insurance for example) and the attendant I saw was beyond rude and condescending. When I asked politely if the eye test machine had been sanitized (Coronivirus anyone) she rolled her eyes at me. Beware! This DMV appears to have lost our registration renewal and there are no people answering phones, in spite of some numbers being listed. "To contact an agent, press 0" and then the line goes dead. I was IN and OUT within 10minutes!!! I made an appointment to hyphenate last name on my drivers license. Although it was scheduled at 8:30am, I decided to swing by around 7ish, just in case the line was long....both inside the building and out. To my amazement there was NO LINE out the door!!! Thank goodness! Inside there were Roughly 5 people waiting in line. I received my ticket, then sat down. Within seconds my number was called! Walking up to the desk, I noticed two women chatting. Of course they continued talking and ignored me for a few seconds! I wanted to say something sooooooo badly! I kept my composure! The last thing I need is this woman screwing up my paperwork. Finally, these hens stopped talking!!! I showed a few documents, took a photo, paid cash then left. Like most people I hate going to the DMV, thankfully this experience was painless. read more

This location is Ass if I do say so myself.. I came two days in a row.. first day checked online/. No where did it say anything about needing an appointment, just figured I'd have to wait longer.. get there and that's the only question they ask everyone "do you have an appointment? We don't take walk ins until 2." It was around 1 and I caught a ride up from South Carolina just to come pay a fee so asked if I could just come in and do that... not allowed. Then a gentleman comes up after me no appointment and as a employee walks out tells the person manning the door " oh just let him in, he's here to pay something." Whatever... came back next day after 2 and before walking in saw them turn so many people away bc of a certain system being down.. ok cool understandable.. I get in. Get my number wait 15 mins and get to a teller who is just rude as hell and just trying to get me out of her face as quickly as possible by interrupting me while trying to explain what I'm there for and just being totally antisocial and an ass... This is atleast my 10th time going to 1/4 DMV's since covid began and by far my least pleasant experience... I'm very happy this isn't my home dmv and hope this was the first and last time I ever have to go back to this location... also when trying to make an appointment no times until July.. atleast I'm SC you can check a few times a day and may actually catch someone that canceled there's didn't seem like an option here. To get a license you need proof of insurance with your name, policy, and start and end date. This was not on their website, so a majority of people in line had this issue. My appointment was at 12:30, I was there until 4 on the phone with my insurance and going back and forth with the workers. ONE man working was kind and assisted by walking my insurance agent through exactly what was needed. They required a DL-123 which only exists in NC. Once I finally got through to actually get my license, they didn't look at the insurance at all. I was yelled at and cried in the middle of a DMV full of people for what? The website needs an update and so do their people. read more

Well, its a DMV, what can you expect? I went to get my daughter's drivers test. It is an ordeal in some respects, like having to wait outside in the below freezing temperates when there is literally no one inside in line. They drain the entire line before letting in a new batch of people. My advice, get there an hour before the open. I got there 30 minutes before open on a Saturday it took me an hour and half just to get inside the building. Once inside the staff was reasonably friendly. Our specific agent was very nice and the person doing my daughters driving test was very nice. read more

Had me waiting a while 30 mins for nothing because he claimed they called my number after I asked him before and he said they didn't!!!! I had to go back and ask again after they wasted my time. I wish there was an option for 0 stars, but I guess please take this review as a warning to GO TO ANOTHER LOCATION. I've lived in NC for over 6 months now and my MA inspection was out of date so I figured ok, time to get everything changed over. Little did I know I was in a for almost a full day of pain and torture. I had scheduled one day off between jobs with the intention to get all of this stuff done in the morning. I arrived early like everyone said, not at 6am but closer to 8:30, half hour after they opened. There was already a line of about 45 - 50 people waiting outside. Oh boy. After being in that line for 2 hours I finally talked to someone and told them I needed to get a license in NC, meaning I had to take a test (ridiculous if you ask me. I then was seated for another 2 hours while I waited for my number to be called. They called a number MAYBE once every 20 minutes at most. In total there were 4 people working in the entire place and one of them went on lunch break for an hour leaving 3 people to handle the entire DMV. Luckily I passed my test, I arrived at 8:30am and didn't leave until 2:30pm. I then stupidly went to the other office to get new plates, nope. You have to wait until you get your actual license in the mail...the temporary one won't work. What an incredible pain. On a brighter note - to get my plates I went to the location on Brookshire Blvd after I got my license in the mail. I arrived right at 8am and was done with everything with plate in hand by 8:15. This place needs to be given -10 stars. The man at the door is probably the most ignorant and arrogant person I have has the displeasure of meeting. He acted as though he was a bar bouncer not a DMV employee. He drilled everyone with a series of questions before you could step foot into the office. It came to be my turn and he asked me his series of questions. The last question was if I had proof of insurance to be able to get my out of state license changed to NC. Did you hear what I said proof of insurance to be able to get my out of state license changed to NC! When I said no and told him that wasn't mentioned on the website he insisted that it was and he goes thru this everyday. I've been putting off changing my name with the DMV because my last visit (to a different location) was a total freaking nightmare. Maybe the bar was set too low, but I was thrilled with my quick and painless visit to this office this morning. I arrived around 11:30 on a Thursday before a holiday weekend. The office is bright (thanks to all the windows on the front wall) and seems clean. The staff I encountered were friendly and helpful. They've got a pretty efficient and easy-to-understand system for assigning numbers and calling numbers to the various terminals. My heart sank when I realized I didn't have enough cash to cover the cost (the price went up from $10 to $13 since I had last checked), but then I found out they now accept debit and credit cards. Easy! I also updated my voter registration while I was there. I planned on taking a (very) long lunch to take care of this, but I was back at my desk (in the Ballantyne Corporate Park) about an hour after leaving--and that includes a quick stop into Rite-Aid! I even like the new photo they took. Maybe I fell into an alternate reality? If so, disregard this review. read more

Well I brought all my paperwork, waited in-line very patiently and sat down to await my turn . I watched the line grow longer and people milling about . In walks a well dressed , well groomed white male . He walks around the line looking at everyone until he sees a white female employee (Ms. Mooney) helping another patron . He patiently waits for her to finish instead of getting inline . She notices him and directs him to the front of the line and assist him . Well folks ,I complained to her about her blatant disregard for those who were waiting . She informed me that he had an appointment so he could cut in-front of everyone . So I said appointment or not he should have waited inline like everyone else ! So dress up, smell good and look for Ms. Money , smile right and you don't have to wait in line ! The pictures are real. The line wraps all the way around the building. Be prepared to wait at least two hours. The good news is, once you get in there if you have all the documents you need you will be in and out. Theeee Worst!!! I came with everything I needed to get a new license because of a name change. First they skip over my number. A couple dudes ignore that when I point that out. I go to the front desk, they take me to an available person. I get everything changed, and go to take my picture. They skip over me again!!!! THEN they got my name wrong when I finally get to take my picture. HOW DID THEY GEY MY NAME WRONG???!!! I have to go back to the lady for her to fix. Then I have to go back and take another pic. This was honestly one of the most painless DMV visits I've ever had. I was there to get my NC drivers license, as I recently moved from out of state. I wish I remembered the woman's name who worked with me, but she was great. She was helpful, kind, and patient. The process of getting my actual license was very smooth. I did have to wait about an hour in the waiting room, then it took about 20 minutes to complete the licensing process. I truly have no complaints about my experience. read more

I cannot believe when I tell you guys that this was this most terrible DMV experience I have ever received! I took my daughter here on a Saturday at 9:10 A.M. to get her full provisional license. We spent almost 3 hours in line just for one of the security to tell us to leave at 11:50 because they're about to close. They were only taking in about 5 people at a time (all the seats on the inside were empty!) and it was 28 degrees. Unbelievable. Was pouring & cold out the RUDE gentleman at the front desk yelled at me & my 15 year old who was getting her permit - to go & wait in line outside. Stood out there for 40 minutes while there was plenty of room inside. He just felt the need to assert his "power" and be completely rude. He chirped all morning on how to stand in a proper line! You can do many things online now but teem license stuff has to be done at a place. I've been pleasantly surprised the last few times I've had to go. Each time faster than I expected. This time was the best. 930 arrival on a Thursday, only 1 person at check in ahead and only a few people waiting. Was called back in 3 minutes. Very nice officer C helped us. TL;DR: Be prepared and arrive at least an hour before open for best results. Getting a Real ID took me less than two hours. My experience was pleasant. I arrived at 6:50am on Saturday morning. I was 29th in line. After my arrival, the line rapidly extended down the block, and by the time they opened at 8:00 there were easily 100+ people in line. They let people in in groups of 10. There were two people at the front desk checking documents and handing out tickets. Once I sat down with a ticket, my number was called about 10 minutes later. I handed over my documents, confirmed my name, address, and DOB were correct on the screen and wrote a check for $13 to upgrade to a Real ID. I walked out the door at 8:38am. Relatively painless as far as DMV visits go, and based on the reviews here. I was expecting much worse. read more

Would give no stars if that were an option. I know DMV is frustrating to everyone (not sure what's so hard to do). Like so many of our tax dollars at work, if this were not protected by bureaucratic red tape, and was in the private sector, it would be out of business. The power trip these employees demonstrate is unbelievable. Many are chit chatting like they're not on the clock with a room full of customers waiting or they're just nasty. I'm SURE it is beyond frustrating dealing with the public, but my last trip was inexcusable. We had two appointments booked and the person who booked them was at the desk fighting with me that I didn't have them. She reviewed my paperwork and told me I needed two documents. I wrote it down and repeated/reread it to her, which she confirmed. I made new appointments for today. We arrived 10 minutes early and after waiting for 45 minutes, I politely approached the desk to see if our number could have been skipped. The receptionist had checked us in wrong (without an attempt of an apology). She immediately gave us a new number and we were seen immediately because she knew she messed up. We approach our station and are told I'm missing a document. I again politely asked to speak with the woman I met with and reviewed what I needed to bring back previously. She approached with an attitude and it only went downhill from there. After arguing with me about what she word for word had confirmed to me the previous day, and waiting unnecessarily for over 45 minutes, I lost my cool. Yet again her incompetence wasted my time. Not a single word of an attempt to apologize by either employee, in fact they both blamed it on me. You're right I was in the computer and checked myself in wrong. You're right the directions you gave me and confirmed were mine. AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE. read more

Visited the DMV office on W. Arrowood Rd on 2/18/20, to renew my drivers license with the Real ID. upon checking in I was told it would be 1.5-2.0-hrs, whoever, the whole process only took me 75 mins, even though the facility was really crowded. DMV personnel generally receive low marks, but I have to say that each of the staff personnel I encountered were very curious and helpful. The process was well automated with regards to keeping one informed as to the numbers being called, answering questions, etc. The facility was clean and well organized, and the sitting was comfortable. The best recommendation I could pass on is for the customers who come in seeking services from the DMV. Go on the DMV website and research documents needed to accomplish the goal to which brought you there. If you show up without the correct information, or the information you brought is not in English, you will be turned away and have to repeat the visit. read more

That being said, if you are reading this review you are likely planning an upcoming trip to the DMV.. and just as likely not looking forward to it. In truth, after several visits to this particular DMV, I can honestly say that the Charlotte DMV on Arrowood Road is the rudest, most inefficient and lazy place of business I have ever seen. The other truth is that your own personal experience may be as easy as a summer breeze. At the end of the day, do I think it's worth driving another hour to go to another location? I do. This was by far the slowest DMV ever! They literally had 6/10 station workers go to lunch at the same time & of the 4 remaining only 2 could take card payments. Being it's 2017 & most people have cards the 2 workers accepting cash were just standing there or only taking cash customers as they came in. It was ridiculous. read more

This place makes you wonder how people that are illegal aliens and people that don't speak English get a license. They want proof of your address, SS card, and proof of insurance. One dummy even asked for a passport. It takes over an hour on a good day to get a "temporary license". They can't print it at the location, you have to wait several weeks to get the permanent one in the mail. This is an absolute joke. This place is located in a seedy strip shopping area. Right in front of this location are approx 30 signs that say " No Parking NCDMV" Got to be kidding. read more
