I had to get my license renewed in person and was dreading what I may encounter at the DMV. The service was great and the staff here stood out as a friendly and professional team, not overboard nice (it's the DMV) but actually wanting to help and be cool. I was impressed. Everyone who works here is completely miserable and have absolutely no customer service. The woman who I was "helping" me was a disaster. Impatient, rolling eyes, and very snippy. Went to the dmv expecting to take my permit test, had all the right documents but was turned away by window 12 who stated and I quote "our system is down so we can't make a new ID card for you, please make another appointment. I'm extremely disappointed and hurt as my guardian had to waste gas and a work day to drive to this pointless appointment just to be turned away like Shane Dawson was turned away from the media. Had an excellent experience at the Van Nuys DMV. I made an appointment but got there early in the hopes of finding a window (I had to get back to work.) Ok.... well that wasn't tooooo painful actually. Went in at noon on Saturday and done with name change, picture and real ID by 3:30. Everyone was super helpful and nice! Here's some tips: 1. have patience and accept that you're there! No use getting irritated with the wait. 2. Bring a book or fully charged cell 3. Went 10/25/2024 to pay my registration. I was already aware of the practice the employees have at this DMV of trying to push you out for missing something related to what you came for. I had it covered. As he was saying he needs the paper work, I was showing it to him one after another. Then he hits me with a whopping over $1000.00 bill to get the tags. I asked him to explain. Instead of answering I got pushed away to wait while they call Sacramento to verify a $14.00 reinstatement fee had been paid. I was holding the receipt and they looked at it. Him and the manager. Still pushed to the side. So something was wrong on their end as far as verifying the fee had been paid. So it made more sense to them to find something else. The smog check. So you have only 90 days after you smog to get registered. I was over the 90 days. Even though a smog check is good for 2 years when you register the car, it's only 90 days if not. That led to me telling the guy Im not made of money. I know he has no control over fees but its customer service be expecting to hear some complaining over robbing people. So they got me on the smog I asked for an itemized receipt to show how the fees got up to over $1000.00. The itemized receipt was in short hand. Everything abbreviated, I took it figured Id try again Monday. When I left I looked at the incomplete registration. Found the error. Went back in. Got another window. The first window was #20, This window was #17. This was a woman this time. Showed her what I thought may be an error. She looked for a second and said "you know I heard you talking to the other employee before and he already explained it to you." Not the error and not how the itemized list was established. So she got very angry hands shaking and highlighted in 3 color the itemized list. Highlighted by year what fees and year. Told me go to window 12 if I have more questions. So this woman is about 45 years old. She has a crush on the first guy I dealt with. He was about 19. I went to window 12. Showed her my problem. She was nice but asked what windows/people helped me before. I proudly told her thinking she might actually teach them customer service practices. Nope she went and talked to the woman and came back just as ticked off. Now remember, all I did here was tell the first guy im not made of money and now Im trying to get the fees explained and the error fixed. The manager this lady was. Told me that the missing year of registration was paid and It was I paid it. Then said it had been rejected and the payment had been placed in the system as a credit but the registration that I paid and had tags on my truck for wasn't good. The only question I had next was "why didn't they put the payment back on my card and notify me they had kicked back my registration. She just could not accept there was an error. I was with the receipt of that registration. Long story but I have myself covered. This woman was roughly 39 yrs old. Also had a crush on the guy at window 20. I haven't seen anything like those 2 women in a very long time. So the true itemized receipt showing what I was paying for was in her hand. I asked for a copy. She said there is a $5.00 fee for every item on the itemized list. That was it. The office was closed I was the last guy in there. I figured Ill take what I have and go to a new DMV. I left and realized I left my phone in the woman's hand. She wanted to see proof of insurance. Then was left there. I went back. Not even 5 minutes later. She says no phone there. Unbelievable. It's the DMV. I think she took my phone away for being a bad boy. Meaning telling her crush I wasn't made of money. So I went home and ran the find my phone software. And that app works. It is showing my phone at that DMV practically exactly where window 12 is. So Monday Im going back. Showing them the print outs of where my phone is all weekend and in the Morning before I go. If she wont return it then. I guess I will call police. Ill update this Monday. This is just completely unacceptable from the DMV. The 2 women should be fired over this. read more

Somewhere I lost my drivers license yesterday and it could not be found. I tried to find a location which had the least wait time. Came here and the line took an hour just to get through with no appointment. Another 1.5 hours to get my number called. The guy that was working the line at the main entrance was a total asshole. He needs some re-training in customer service skills. Very rude guy. The lady who helped me get a replacement license was nice. Seem like most of the other employees were friendly. Expect long lines and no parking. Lines wrapped around the building etc. read more

Hi i took my license test today. I had 0 mistakes and my instructor gave me an automatic fail for back up when he made me pull over on a red curb next to a stop sign . I backed up a little far from the curb and backed up 3 times then from there he made me pull into the dmv and i failed. From the start coming into the dmv i did not want to get that instructor because i knew he was known for failing minors on the slightest things , today proves my point because i deserved to pass. I go to this DMV a lot, the place is always busy and often open on Saturdays. The staff will work with you on most occasions. They fill up quick but this place seems to work down the crowds pretty good. You can pay most of your driving related infractions here as well. Ask to make payments and where tho. For a non-appointment Saturday DL renewal... Not bad! Listen, always go in expecting the worst, that way you aren't disappointed. As for my experience: office opens at 8:00am, and I was in line by 7:15am, with about 45 people already in line. The lot is open, so parking is plentiful if you come early. They have a staff member pre-screening for what you want, and lines are redirected accordingly. I ended up in a group of about 15 (DL renewals only) who were let inside at around 7:40am to fill out an application on a computer. I was 9th out of 15, BUT whoever finishes the application first gets to leave first and stand in another line outside. I finished first, so I went to another line of about 8, I was 8th. At around 8am, my new group was then let in, and given a number to wait for window service. After paying, thumb print, and picture, I was out the door by 8:10am! Again, the DMV is notorious for wait times and rude staff, so just go in expecting the worst, be attentive and listen to directions, look up online before you go what documents you need, and have some damn patience if you didn't make an appointment. Don't be like the grown up lady behind me who was huffing and puffing out loud about how she doesn't have time for this, she has to go to work, all while she's eating pastry for breakfast! This DMV is probably the oldest in the valley and is in desperate need of upgrades. They do a fair job of coralling people, but it is in need of more seating. Thank God the wait AFTER receiving a number in the first line was only an hour. I went without an appointment to register my car which I forgot to do. I was two days past my due date (never again). They also have a machine for registration renewal but you can't be past your due date. Standing room only, packed in like sardines and prisoner to all of the smelly people needing baths . Because seating is like having a Bitcoin you don't want to get up ever until your number is called. Did I mention they have only two screens and you can barely hear the numbers being called. It's a pretty stressful situation. So having sat for an hour before my number was called, and just finishing my coffee before getting there, I had to pee so bad. Omg the restroom was one of the most disgusting I've encountered in a long time! I am tempted to call OSHA on them! No excuses for this when they are literally raping us in fees. It was also the room where people took the written driving test. As I was walking out of the room, my number was called for the eye test and payment--you can't get more efficient than that. I have never been to this dmv office. I always went to the one in Hollywood on Cole Ave. I had a appointment today to renew my driver's license and take a new photo. The guy said to go through the doors and I said what doors since I've never been there before. He said in a snippy and nasty voice, there's only one door. A lady that works there apologized to me the way he responded to my question. The two ladies that helped me and the guy that took my photo were very helpful and respectful, but this guy should be fired immediately. I went to renew my driver's license and had already gone to the website and passed the written portion of test and already paid. It's a fun way of taking the driver's knowledge test. I ordered a paper handbook from AAA and read it first to learn and refresh my knowledge. All I had to do was get fingerprinted and picture taken which went really quick. The people working there were friendly and kind. Guess you have to be a people person to work there because your dealing with a variety of people from all walks of life. Anyway, they were all very nice. Took me about twenty minutes and I was done. I did feel a little uncomfortable because I was the only white person there and felt like I stuck out but the people in line seemed like very hard working people . I felt safe so it didn't bother me I just thought it a bit odd. And I was the only person in line with an appointment too so stood out while waiting to be let inside at 8 am. The driver is allowed to make a set amount of mistakes and is only limited to three major mistakes. Norma looked at me and said, "you only had one mistake, but it was a bad one. So I won't pass you" the paper states that the driver is limited to three major errors. I had only one. As I proceeded to mention this to him. he thought it was okay to talk over me. Review for visit on 3/25/2021 - I honestly had a great experience in my past DMV visit despite having to pay almost $1600 for my Title Transfer and Registration and what I happened to find out was a dishonorable check posted to my license -____- I recently paid off my 2018 Honda Fit and received my title from Honda on a Wednesday, 2 weeks after paying it off. I quickly freaked out and went into "let me take care of this right away" mode as I usually do, yay anxiety ! I saw on the DMV site that I could do the title transfer online and no appointment was needed nor provided for this service. I attempted to do the Virtual Office option and once I completed that I did not feel very confident on the submission of the documents and whatnot so I took my happy ass to the DMV the following day, Thursday. I arrived to the DMV at 7:15, the lot was open for parking and plenty of spaces available at this time. There is a line with markers on the floor to enforce social distancing (of course not many people abided), when I arrived there were about 20 - 25 people ahead of me. Some people had portable chairs, I thought that was a bit extreme but hey w/e floats your boat. Plenty of more people started arriving and once the security guard started temperature screenings there must have been at least 80 people waiting in line. Checking-in - 7:50 am, security guard started temperature checks and another 2 staff were designated to asking you what you were there for, people were sectioned off into 2 separate lines. I think one was for ID/DL matters and the other was for Registration and other services. I informed the staff I was there for a title name and registration transfer, he asked me for my title and gave me an orange slip with some scribbles which I did not get the opportunity to look at because once I lined up another lady asked me for the slip and gave me window number laminated sign. The entire process was quicker than I expected so that was nice, what came wasn't so much. Title Transfer/Registration, Dishonorable Check LOL: I checked in with Linda at Window 24, I let her know what I was there for and she was extremely helpful and patient throughout the entire process! Thanks Linda! When she looked up my info and told me there was a Dishonorable check reflecting on my DL and I had to pay $426, great. I couldn't do the title transfer until this matter was taken care of. I was asked various questions as to why this could have happened i.e. did you close this account, was there enough funds, did you cancel the check, input the #'s wrong, etc. I was also asked if I had received a letter in the mail stating I had a dishonorable check which I received today (3/29/21). I had no such letter and as far as I knew everything had been processed correctly. A few weeks prior I paid for my registration via the DMV site and e-check, I got my tags a week later and yet the $$ was never deducted ($277). I chalked it up to COVID delays like all else in the world, come to find out this happened. Linda called over her manager because I had a successful email confirmation, the check used and the tags on hand. Her manager, super helpful and nice, told me he would need to contact the DMV corporate office or whomever takes care of these matters and find out why it is reflecting as dishonorable. I sat and waited about 30 - 40 minutes, he came back and informed me because my registration was not past due and it could have been a simple # input wrong that this sort of stuff happens I would only need to pay $307 instead of the original $277. I was okay with that since it wasn't the original $426 they were trying to charge me, it is upsetting h/e that the DMV doesn't have a way of waiving this for simple # input incorrectly, mistakes happen. The manager also told me I'd probably be receiving the letter informing me of the dishonorable check and to disregard it since it was all taken care of today. I paid the $307, plus $7 service fee to pay with debit card, then onto the Title transfer. The night prior I was researching the process for a title transfer & found out I was going to have to pay a "Used Tax" fee, makes sense since I was purchasing a car but I never thought of this when I paid my car off Lol. No one teaches you these sort of things ya know? I was going to have to pay 9.50% of the payoff price for my car & another service fee for using my debit card, YAY! I walked out of there $1,550 broker lol, come thru stimulus check! Before I forget, I told Linda I had done the Virtual Office title registration & she looked at me like "why??" lol. Luckily Linda was able to get it cancelled & we were able to complete the process, I was handed my new registration with MY name on it & was told I'd be receiving my new title in the mail within 2-3 weeks. Overall was a great experience, took longer because of my situation but Linda & the staff that helped me were super helpful, patient & I left there feeling confident all was taken care of. read more

Disorganized and very harsh grading on the behind the wheel test. I waited three hours just for the examiner to fail me for one small error.

Forget what you know about past DMV experiences. This place has it's act together. First, call the DMV and use the option to have them call you back. It took over an hour but they set the appt time for you. Get and save the confirmation number they give you as you'll need to give it to the DMV rep at the office, outside, in front. Then, go online and just fill out the info form. It's just the info you already have on your license so it takes no time. You'll get a confirmation number for that as well. Save it for the same reasons as above. Get all your needed info (2 bills to show where you live, birth cert, and Social Security card, etc) and go the the DMV. I got there about half an hour early for my 12:00 appt and was out before 12:00. It was that fast. First thing I saw was no one was in line for appt already made line while the line for walk ins was around the building, and not moving. I went and spoke to a lady who took my info and told her I was early. Someone else asked for my appt time and checked my name. Meanwhile the walk in line is getting longer. Literally, in about 3 seconds, I'm told to go in. When I walk to the door (I'm still outside) I'm told they're calling my name already and tell me to go to window 21. Once, inside, I say to myself, "window 21?" as I'm looking around and a passing employee tells me it's "right over there." The clerk I meet is polite and proficient and I keep telling her how great this is and the work she's doing. I'm really awestruck at the efficiency. 18 minutes later, I'm walking out the door. Meanwhile, people inside are sitting against the walls, all spaced out apart, as they wait for the system to catch up to them since they didn't do it online and call for an appt. As I go outside, the line is getting longer and people who saw me go to the front and then leave are still there, looking at me. I ask one of the clerks why nobody went online and got an appt, she said that maybe they're afraid of doing it that way. Don't be afraid. Like I said, this place has it's act together and will forever change my mind and attitude about the DMV. They should no longer be the butt of any jokes anymore. And, if you're concerned about Covid and precautions, they've got that covered too. There are no idiots walking around voicing disapproval of safety measures. They run a tight ship and you'll be safe. read more

I'm currently here trying to help my mom with the dmv's process of renewing a license. I'll start off with the security guard this office has. I've been coming here a bit lately and it's usually the same guy at the door. He is incredibly rude to everyone. He yells, cuts you off before you can even get your question in, has no sense of respect or common courtesy. I just saw him yell at a senior citizen. The senior just wanted to know what time this office opens. Apparently that deserved him a yell and a "go to the back of the line". Hey bud, here's some advice, humble yourself or find yourself another job. No one is trying to ruin your day on purpose. Be useful and help instead of spreading your negativity. The rest of the staff here look completely lost and then go on and disrespect anyone who doesn't know what their doing (customers). They create lines, yet they usually aren't directing the customers to the right line. "Go to the back there's a line". There's no real solid system here. The test clipboard gets passed around from one employee to another. I've only met about 2 employees here that were actually helpful. I know this job is stressful. You deal with people from all walks of life, but damn does it kill you to smile? To be respectful? To have some patience? Would you want your family to be treated the way you treat the customers that come into your dmv? Management clearly doesn't have a hold on their staff and they don't have a set system that works yet when it comes to directing their staff and customers. Back to the drawing board, guys.
