They kept thanking me for my patience but they were the patient ones, having to deal with whatever tricky system issues they ran into. Props to them all! Automated check in for online appointments is very easy--you get a text reminder of your appointment when you make it online, you reply to that number with "check in" 15 minutes before your appointment, it texts you back with a ticket number, then you sit and wait til your ticket number comes up. The waiting area got quite cold as they had an industrial a/c running, so wear layers in summer/extreme heat times. The only recommendation I have is that it would be great to have some instructions posted next to the machine that you put your face/eyes on to take your eye test, both for how to do the test/use the machine and to sanitize it after each use. If the person instructing you isn't speaking loudly, it's hard to hear what you're supposed to do.

Take a seat and you will be called fairly quickly. We were called a few minutes prior to our actual appointment time. Use the online information ahead of time to have the proper documents with you. The customer service agent who helped me to get my 84 year old father his drivers license was knowledgeable, fast, and kind. We both left feeling accomplished without spending forever waiting. I was in line for check-in longer than I was waiting to see a clerk, but I was still in and out in exactly one hour! This is the best DMV location I've ever been to. I lived around the corner when I first moved to Virginia about ten years ago, so I've had to go to the DMV for a couple of different things over the years... at first I came to this location because it was closest, and now I live on the other side of town, but I still drive to this one because they're so efficient.

Visited this DMV twice…read more The very first thing the staff asked me for was my 'green card.' I am a U.S. citizen, and I had my valid U.S. passport with me. They didn't ask me about my citizenship status at all before making that assumption. Being asked for a green card right off the bat, without even being asked if I'm a citizen, made me feel like I was being judged by my appearance and treated as an outsider. It was uncomfortable and felt discriminatory, even if that wasn't their intention. I hope the staff can be trained to ask about citizenship status first, rather than assuming everyone who walks in needs a green card.

I expected long lines but I was on a mission to get correct info and then move forward another time. Only 1 person in front of me and no lines anywhere in sight. The employee giving me info was very friendly and helpful and she moved me to the correct line. Next thing I know I am getting new plates and my Jeep in registered. Whaaaatt????? 30 minutes or less, in and out and I got info, new plates and my Jeep in registered. AND the employee that helped me was so friendly and we talked to each other the entire time. Don't get me wrong, this DMV is teeny in comparison to others nearby, but come early and you can get everything done quickly. Considering when I walked in at 10am this place was heaving and there wasn't a spare seat, I was seen to within 10 minutes of walking through the door, had my documentation uploaded onto the system, had my picture taken, and within the hour I'd taken my theory test and was on my way to getting the road test. I chose Smithfield as the area is a lot more relaxed (and quieter) then taking the road test in town, but also because the customer service experience was far more superior. All desks were occupied, people were seen to in a timely manner, the flow was smooth and people weren't waiting all day for walk ins. I highly recommend this DMV, whether it's to take your theory / road tests, updating your license or documentation, even coming in for a copy of your birth certificate or to sign up for TSA Pre-check, it's worth driving the extra miles than waiting all day. Time is money!

Trouble is, at time of need, there was only 1 area DMV open #ThanksCovid. Booked a 540p Sat appointment online; received a "1 day" email reminder/confirmation. Though it's a trek from my house, the experience was worth the drive. I was in and out in under 15 minutes. In fact, my commute took longer than the appointment. Lots of parking available. On arrival (in my Phase 2 mask, semi-weird at a DMV) employee verifies admittance based on your name matching info on clipboard. Before approaching the main info desk, another employee sprays/wipes down surfaces between EVERY CUSTOMER. I provided all requested documents upon request. Rep approved and sent me to window 13. PRO TIP1: complete the online VA DMV Real ID pre-application BEFORE your appointment. SAVES TIME AND HEARTACHE: alerts you as to which documents you'll need along with the ability for the DMV rep to print the pre-filled application. I used valid US passport, expiring VA driver's license, social security card and mortgage statement. PRO TIP2: on the app, make sure to enter your name exactly how it appears. Some of my documents had my middle, some didn't. PRO TIP3: if you've had a name change (married or divorced) you'll need the marriage cert AND social security card with the NEW NAME. After confirming my organ donor status and never having a license in another state, I signed the pre-filled application, took a brief vision exam, then stood for a new photo (mask off). That flash IS BRIGHT! Paid $42 quickly via credit card and I was on my way. DMV accepts Apple Pay! FYI, you'll leave with a temp paper license until the RealID gets mailed from Richmond (7-10 days).
