Following our home inspector's advice, we sent samples of the dated "popcorn" ceiling texture in our newly purchased home (built in 1969) for asbestos testing. The test results came back from the lab positive (1-2% asbestos) so we decided to have them removed rather than continue painting them every five years to encapsulate the material. Do It Now confirmed they are certified to handle the removal (they "specialize in that") and we read good reviews on Yelp, so we decided to go with the company. Our house is 1,600 square feet. "Popcorn" ceiling texturing was in every room except the two bathrooms and the kitchen. For expediency, we donned masks and carefully removed all the light fixtures and vents ourselves. We also removed all the furniture we'd just moved in to make it easier for the crew and to prevent any damage. (We were thanked for this and told that it helped tremendously, but did not receive any reduction in price for our prep. work.) Verbal Time Estimate: 2-3 days Actual Time: 6 work days (plus a Sunday when no work was done) Verbal Phone Estimate Based on Square Footage and Asbestos Content: $3,700 Written/Quoted Cost: $4,400 Actual Cost: $4,800 To be fair, we were in a rush because we had to be out of our old house. Rick, the owner, said he had to hire several extra painters to help complete our job on time. Our house also had more square feet of coverage than he originally thought when he visited the house to give us a quote. Three separate crews were brought in: one crew covered the walls with plastic sheeting and removed the asbestos-ridden texturing. The next crew re-taped and re-mudded the ceiling drywall seams, then textured the ceilings. The final team masked and painted. BOTTOM LINE: Everything went smoothly with all the workers being friendly and, in general, careful of the house. There were minor issues (paint on one curtain, texture bits left in the fireplace, minor paint drips on the carpet), but overall they did a very good job cleaning up. They even washed the front walkway. We were pleased that Do It Now accepted all major credit cards via Square and Rick could usually be reached by cell phone if we had questions. Overall, I gave the company a five-star rating because they did a good job and really worked hard to get us in the house in time. As always, there were a few things they could have done better. - - - - - - - - FOR IMPROVEMENT: A more accurate time estimate would have been nice. It was very awkward to be asked after competition of the job to help pay for the additional workers that had to be brought in to finish the job on time. This was presented as optional, but not discussed prior to completion of the job. I'd definitely recommend that Rick reevaluate his choice of Behr paint. Our walls had all recently been painted using Benjamin Moore. We assumed Rick would specify a swiss coffee white from them, but he said he "usually works with Behr," so we trusted his recommendation and went with that instead (again, no credit for the cheaper paint). The painters repeatedly commented that Behr doesn't give as good coverage. They had to come back twice to address sections of ceiling where roller marks were very obvious. (They blamed the inferior paint.) There are still some places where roller marks can be seen, but we ran out of time to deal with those and will repaint the sections ourselves "someday" if we have the time. There were also a number of dings and chips on the walls, plus one hole that was knocked in the wall, during the texture removal process. Those had to be repaired and repainted. Fortunately, we had 2/3 of a can of leftover Benjamin Moore wall paint that the painters used up completely. Again, there was no credit for the use of our paint, no offer to replace what they used, and they didn't save the can so we knew the color! read more

These guys did a good job, but only because I was there to constantly double-check. The main guy was easy to contact, professional and seemed to really know what he was doing, but there were other guys that he hired that didnt seem to know what I wanted. One of them cut an unnecessary hole in the wall, and when I said something he patched it, and came very close to putting screws into my PEX manifold. The door patch was beautiful-i cant even tell where it was, but I would only hire these guys if you are willing to be around the whole time to supervise. That said, the price was reasonable and the final result is great, despite the stress during the job. The job I had them fo was to hang new drywall in a bedroom, patch a door in another bedroom, and stuff the insulation into the ceiling as they went. read more

Rick did excellent work with the tape and texturing over our small DIY remodel/drywall job. He did especially well matching a rounded corner by our fireplace to the other corner that wasn't torn up. I have a 1950s home in Arden Arcade I am fixing up to rent. The family room needed a new ceiling and other rooms throughout the house needed major wall repairs to replace drywall removed by the electrician and the plumber. I called Do It Now based upon reviews I had read online. I have done major home remodels in the past, so I have had experience hiring other drywall contractors. Rick showed up on time to do his estimate. He gave me an extremely good bid for the work and surprised me by being able to start the very next day. He had a great, professional team. The hangers were fast and meticulous. Screw spacing on the ceiling was perfect, joints were tight. As they were packing up, Luis the taper showed up. His work was superb. His taping was clean, without bubbles or gaps. His skim coat was so smooth, it looked as if it had been sanded. And his technique on the skip texture was perfect. One small problem did come up. Because my house had no heat at that time, Luis used a propane heater to help dry the mud. It created so much heat in the small bedrooms, it actually melted several heavy Venetian blinds hanging in the bedroom windows. Rick was purely professional about it. He immediately went down to Home Depot, got a quote for the replacement cost of the blinds and deducted it from the bill. Not a whimper. I plan to use Do It Now again soon for work that I am planning on my own home. I would enthusiastically recommend these folks to anyone. They are exceptional. read more

Since I found Rick of Do It Now Drywall via Yelp, I thought I would write a review for him. I am in the middle of a kitchen remodel as we speak and he has been the only contractor that I haven't had to chase down to get a hold of, or ask to come back to, to finish up. To be exact, Rick over-delivered on his promise to match my existing texture ( which was a heavy knock down) and skim coat every wall and ceiling true, in addition to working cleanly. I couldn't have asked for anyone more easy to work with and fulfilling of my wishes. It's a big deal when you have to texture an area since it isn't something you're going want to do twice even if you're unhappy with the results, most of us would just live with it. That's exactly why I wanted someone who does good work, if not great work to begin with, so I looked for the top reviewed drywallers to start. Speaking with him over the phone gave me a pretty good indicator that he was open to looking at the project and giving an estimate soon. His estimate was appropriately priced to begin with but now after the job I think I received a good deal! We were absolutely amazed !! Rick did what we thought would be impossible. Our ceiling had sagged and we removed the popcorn texture to see if it could be repaired. We had three drywall contractors look at it and was told by two of them that it would have to be totally replaced. We need to have some drywall repaired from a small demo job we did, and this company has great ratings on yelp so I called and left a message 5 days ago. I didn't receive a return call so I tried again the next day, and it just went to voicemail again. I still have not heard anything back, and I swear I didn't leave a cryptic message on their voicemail or anything. Perhaps they have plenty of work and do not require any additional business but it only takes a couple of minutes to return a call and it is very unprofessional not to do so. Contacted Rick- Do It Now Drywall. Initially he was hard to get a hold of as he's probably a busy guy. I left a message and he called me back later. He gave me an approximate price quote for the total re-do of the ceiling of my property for removing the acoustic ceiling and re-texturing the living room, hallway and the 2 bedrooms. He called me back and gave me a price quote over the phone based on my measurement of the square footage. The total cost of the actual job was pretty close to the quote he gave me over the phone. I had 2 weeks to do a total remodeling of my place and had other contractors scheduled to do other work such as new carpeting, painting and kitchen remodeling. I was afraid of being able to find a reliable ceiling drywall contractor that will return my calls let alone actual coming out to do the work as promised. Sacramento is a hot real estate market now so finding a reliable, reasonable and qualified contractor is a challenge. After my initial contact with Rick, getting a hold of him was much easier since he knows who I am now. He promised he would come through for me to do the job as scheduled and 2 days before he was scheduled to do the ceiling job, he met me in person to go over some stuff and for the partial down payment for the materials. He initially said it would take 2 days to do the job but ended up taking only 1 and a half days to complete the job. Rick and his crew did an excellent job. They went out of the way to patch up some of the small holes on the walls, removing the HVAC vents and light fixtures even though he was contracted to do only the ceilings. I recently had RIck refloat and texture the walls of my bathrooms to fix a prior messy wallpaper removal. I was very satisfied with his bid and quality of work. There were a few noticeable small flaws in the floating and texture mostly near edges of walls but hopefully after priming and painting they will be minimized.
