Steven Byroads has a long-winded voice message lasting several minutes about being semi-retired and only responding to calls a couple of days a week and that it may take time to hear back from him. Steven Byroads called back on June 2, 2022 at 5 PM. He charges $350.00 just to do a consultation / assessment / estimate. I questioned this consultation fee as I want to do all of the windows which will cost somewhere in the range of $20,000 - $30,000. Byroads said he is semi-retired and that his time is better spent doing other things. If he is going to come over and spend his valuable, semi-retired time with me instead of doing other things, he needs to be paid for it. I declined. It's clear to me that his heart really isn't in it anymore - I certainly don't want anyone working on my home with that attitude. I have contacted a dozen window companies, and Doctor Door & Window is the only one to ask for a fee just to make an estimate. Based on the good reviews, I called. The answer machine asks that you go to the website. The website asks that you describe the problem and leave your contact information. I did all this. Received an email response asking how many windows I needed done. I only have one. Since then several emails and phone calls have produced no results. I even left a message asking if only one window was not a big enough job. No response. On one phone call a women answered and said she would look back through the emails to find my request. I own a 1912 Craftsman home in Los Angeles and it had been a looooong time since the windows and doors had been tended to. I'm so lucky that I found Steve! He is professional, kind, courteous, and most importantly he really knows doors and windows in antique homes. I ended up having him fabricate one brand new door and you can't even tell that it was built in 2017 and not 1912. And for the first time in my home's life all of the doors close and open correctly! And the windows open and close! It's heavenly. If you have an antique home in need of door and window work I beg you to go to Steve. You will not be disappointed. read more

Steve is first and foremost a craftsman. He honestly knows more about doors than any human I've ever met. He also knows about hardware (old and new) and how it all works. We have a 1929 house in Silver Lake built by William Mulholland as a spec house. Our front door is original to the house. It's a heavy, beautiful door, that would not close properly and Steve knew exactly how to remedy the situation without ever having to alter the actual door. In addition, he fixed a couple of other doors for us as well, and we couldn't be more satisfied. If you need someone who knows how to rescue and restore, Doctor Door is your guy. read more

Paid $1500 deposit for Steve to special order a pre hung door and do other work on a $3400 estimate job at our house and apartment next door. This would have been our second job using him. A scheduling error on our part meant the apartment work couldn't be done on the exact time we booked. Steve was inflexible when asked to start earlier and or work beyond 4pm. His subcontractors hired for the day did repair the sliding glass door on the appointed day. After a few requests to reschedule Steve said didn't want to do the job and we agreed that was okay. What is not okay has been his ignoring my request for an invoice for the work done or a refund for the partial job if due. The apartment expenses get reported on my taxes so we need a final accounting. I donated the unused prehung door to Habitat for Humanity and need a value for reporting. Our handyman used a standard door for simpler installation. In our experience Steves craftsmanship is excellent but customer relations skills lack. read more

Terrible. Worst customer service ever. I don't know how he stays in business. I had him come out to put a new back door with pet door opening on my place a few years ago. Late, rescheduled, then when he finally came out, he spent about 40 minutes talking religion. When he came back a week later to install the door, he tells me he really would like to reschedule so he can go to Vegas. Wtf?! He ultimately installed the pet door backwards. So I had to have him come back to fix it. After he left, a bolt was missing. So he essentially ruined the pet door, as it wouldn't stay closed. He sent me an email about a year later, out of the blue, saying he needed to reschedule. Lol. We had no appointment. But I wasn't surprised to hear he was rescheduling with someone. read more

Dr. Door and associates worked on doors, windows and weather stripping at our home last spring. Weather stripping and functionality of front and side entrances were our priorities, though we added several extras that were within our budget. For the most part, the job they did was fine. The stripping has held up well through the year and the side entrance works well. (3 stars) One workman sanded the paint off our living room window sills without consulting us, though we had no plans to repaint. That was pretty lame. (2 stars) Our front door gave them the most trouble. Neither the original (1920s) latch or bolt was functional, and the job was to reclaim those and remove 2 additional deadbolts that had been added. One of Dr. Door's colleagues spent a whole day on it without noticeable progress. Steve (Dr. Door) took over after that and the results were/are not satisfying; the latch worked only briefly, but we have to open it carefully or the doorknob pulls out (which happens all the time). The original bolt works from the outside with a key, but can't be locked or unlocked from within. Finally, he installed a new, "antiquey" looking deadbolt that looks like it came from Home Depot. To summarize, the door is less functional now than it was before work began. The original estimate for the front door work was $525. Without consultation, that went up to $925 on the final invoice (extra time spent + extra materials). We agreed to split the difference, which nobody was happy about. This is our front door so we're reminded daily of this pricey disappointment. (1 star) Dr. Door called me soon after completion of the work, saying he'd actually forgotten to do one of the jobs we'd paid him for, and that he'd drop by in a few weeks to finish it. I'm not sure what he was talking about but we never heard from him again. He'll probably call after I post this poor review, although I really hope he doesn't. read more

I contacted this company through Yelp and expressed that I had 6 doors at 2 properties that where in need of repair, from a small realignment of a deadbolt, to new weather stripping and possibly a whole door replacement. 4 days later Steve came out to give a quote. He doesnt do the work on the spot, he only gives a quote and then you have to reschedule another time for hime to come out and do the actual work. Steve came out on a Sat, about 45 mins late and looked at all our doors. He didn't give us a quote, he left and said he would send us one soon. I emailed him Monday to see if he had the quote ready. He said he will send it by "weeks end". Really? 6 days to create a quote? I emailed him Friday, which is weeks end, and he took until Monday to respond, and said he would have it by Tuesday. Steve has still yet to send us a quote, three weeks later. It clear that Steve and this company are not eager for business, and do not understand that customers who have broken doors need them fixed as soon as possible. Looking back at his reviews you can see most are negative as of lately. I think its time for this company to move on from door repair and perhaps concentrate on whatever else is going on with its company focus . read more

Steve took the time to assess the best solution for the replacement of an exterior door (and hardware) on an office building. He took the time to fit it properly, provide adequate protection for the top of the door (to avoid water damage), replaced and reinforced the area around the door for protection and strength. He built up the framework to another exterior door and also put in extra metal work that he deemed necessary and added a few other things as a gift. Steve also installed an interior door and installed the hardware. Pretty impressive. If you like someone who pays attention to detail and takes pride in his work, then Steve from Doctor Door & Window is for you. The other people I spoke to regarding the work didn't come out to review the job. That had me worried. Steve does take the time necessary to do the "right" kind of job. After I committed to the quote, we had to wait for the delivery of the door. All good. He has also worked on my mother's craftsman house in Silverlake and has done such fine work that she won't hire anyone else. read more

Steve is probably the most skilled door and window installer in the area. We had an urgent job of weather stripping the doors and windows of our 1930's cottage so tightly that smoke from a restaurant next door would not seep in. Not only were our doors old but they were curved on top. I think Steve is the only person who could have achieved this. Weatherstripping is done to keep cold out but Steve's was so expert that our doors were virtually airtight. He worked on his only day off to help us out, worked quickly and cleanly and charged reasonable rates. He will be my go to guy if we ever renovate or have any door or window issues and I would highly recommend him. read more

I could not be more impressed with the good Doctor. We had an odd-sized smashed window, a gaping hole where a doorknob used to live, and an office door lock that was functional but painted over. Steve replaced the window (including matching the previous tinting), did a double-switch on the doorknob, replaced its lock with an authentic antique, and instead of charging me more, advised me to try and "unstick" the office door myself. He even threw in a key for free! If you live in Hollywood, Silver Lake, Los Feliz, etc., and you care about quality work - don't even think about using anyone else. read more

I can't say enough good stuff about Steve and his crew. My home is built in the late 20's and I work to preserve as much of the detail as possible. Steve totally understood that. He goes above and beyond educating me about how things in my home should function and then making it happen. I can't tell you how much angst and annoyance our condo building's front doors have given us over the almost 10 years we have lived there. They are wooden French doors which swell and contract with the weather and while lovely, they are aged. It looked and acted like an old door. We were having continued problems getting it to shut properly which left our security building, un-secure. Our locksmith said there was nothing he could do, that we needed a "door guy". He reiterated, not to hire just anybody because someone could really screw up and make the door not fit. Sigh. Where would I find a door specialist for a beautiful but old wooden door in this world of metal doors and handymen? Yelp to the rescue! (Again!) Steve, Dr. Door, was personable, polite and punctual. He fixed our door and replaced all our rusty hinges. He stayed in touch regarding times and estimates via phone calls and even gave a call after the job to be sure I got my key back and that we were happy with the work! The door looks great and we're calling him back to replace the lock guard and spruce up the door even more. Steve is worth every penny and considering he is a specialist in wooden doors, we got a great deal. He resuscitated our tired, old door and I'll call him again in a heartbeat! read more

We paid a lot of money for a solution that did not work back in July (it's October). He said he stands by his work and that he will continue to work on it until we are satisfied. I found this company via Yelp search and when I requested an online quote and told him I need two doors repaired, he writes back that he "can't afford to come out for only two doors... I called Dr. Door and Window regarding fixing a pane broken in our 1950s/60s apartment. I got no response for weeks. Weeks later, I get a call apologizing profusely for the lack of return call. They've had "upheaval" in their office, and if I haven't had my window fixed, please call, they want to help. And I should send pictures via email. So I set about taking photos of my window, sending off two and forgiveness. Alas, my faith was misplaced. For another several weeks, complete radio silence. I called a few days ago to follow up. I got a call back just now explaining that Steve - Dr. Door and Window- had realized he was simply too busy with jobs that were already on the calendar to fix my window. However, they decided to call with a referral to someone else. The vibe was that they were doing me a favor. The kicker? She asked me to mention that I was referred by Dr. Door and Window because they get "points." So here's my question. Why call me and ask for my business if you are too busy to take it? And then ask me to do you a favor? He worked on my house about 7 years ago and it was an awful experience. Mis-measured windows and then blamed Taylor Brothers for it. Doing the french door install, his employee made shortcuts that thankfully my contractor observed and made him correct. And now today, I have found extensive damage to my subfloor due to a Doctor-Door-badly installed door. I recently bought a fixer-upper that had a sliding patio door that wouldn't open. a GC and a separate structural engineer said this was due to the upstairs level settling onto the frame, and it would cost $5k to open the wall and fix the problem. Dr. Door was at my house to fix some other various window issues, took one look at the aforementioned slider and said that was not the case, just the frame needed an adjustment and was able to fix it for $1200! I have since had him doctor several doors in our home, and not only is he is a very trustworthy and interesting fellow, but has really gone the extra miles make sure our projects were completed to our satisfaction. read more

I live in East Hollywood Hills. The company is located in East Hollywood. 2 days later I was emailed that I am out of their area! We have a 1924 home in the Hancock Park area with all original windows and doors. Steve and his team did a wonderful job restoring them! We called Steve when our cleaning lady lost our house key and we needed to replace the locks, but once we realized the breadth of his skill set we also had him help with weather stripping some windows, fixing the front door so it would close right (we used to have to slam our shoulder into it to get it to lock), and replacing an unusually sized window pane in our dining room (which our son cracked with his head). Some of the negative comments here reflect the frustration that it may take a while to get Steve to give an estimate or to schedule the work. All I can say is that he is in demand because he is one of the few workers I have found who actually know what they are doing. It will definitely be worth the wait. Once Steven does the work for you, you will understand why--he is extremely knowledgeable (read expert) about all door and window related problems, and how to rectify them. If he cannot figure out how to fix your problem, then no one can. We had several different types of door alignment problems, and he was able to figure out--sometimes with an elegant solution--how to fix the problems that had been plaguing us for quite a while. I have an older pre-war triplex and am doing my best to maintain the integrity of the original design and appointments. Do you know how hard it is to find someone who shares your perspective? Well I just had Dr. Door over to repair one of the original exterior doors and it's frame, add weatherstripping, fix a laundry list of to-do items, all in keeping with the building's 1937 original look. Identifying the problems for an older building...this was simple for him to do. Finding replacement pieces from the same period...he had a stash of older items which were appropriate. Executing the repairs thoughtfully and with attention to detail...he had that under control as well. A true "fixer". And on top of that, what a great guy! So if you've been looking, you can check that off your list. Call him, or shoot him an email. I would have him back for other work in a heartbeat. read more

We have used Dr. Door and Window a number of times in the last five years. We own a 1927 duplex and the windows were starting to deteriorate...we were seriously considering replacing them with new windows. Fortunately we had Dr. Door come out for an estimate and he indicated that he could tune up and repair our 25+ windows. It was a big job, but he was able to refurbish all of our windows...so they are almost like new. My wife and I were thrilled that he was able to save them! Over the years, Steve has also replaced a number of doors and locks (he is a locksmith!) and replaced glass on any number of windows (better than many glass companies) It is always a pleasure to find an "artist" who takes pride in his work.
