Stopped in for an early dinner last night. Super friendly service, even to a "yankee" like me. I give the food my highest praise. I see why it was rated the fourth best steakhouse in the U S by The Food Network and The Travel Chanel. We drove from Birmingham Al and will make tis trip as often as possible for it truly will melt in your mouth. Now Greenville isn't the friendliest looking town so if you make the trip you must research where to book a hotel. Even if your not a Casino fan that appears to be the best for several reasons mainly security. You must eat here no matter what if you are a steak lover this is a bucket list place to go read more

For me Doe's is the Number One Steak House in the US. I have been to different states(Texas,California,Louisiana,Tennessee.....) always have been a picky eater,but Doe's Steaks just blow me away all the time. I wish I could rate it more to describe what I am feeling!!!! read more

After planning a work-related trip to Greenville I put Doe's at the top of my list of restaurants to visit. I should have spent my time and money elsewhere. Our waitress acted as though we were wildly inconveniencing her throughout our entire meal. My friend ordered spaghetti but when she was told they were out decided on the tamales and fries. I ordered fried shrimp, fries and a salad. My friend was served her entire meal and had eaten it before my shrimp even made it to the table. The waitress forgot my salad and after being promised twice that my fries were coming I cancelled the remainder of the order and left. I could have forgiven the service if the food had been good. But it wasn't. The tamales were little more than spicy grease in masa. The shrimp was flavorless. I had a few of my friend's fries and they were greasy and limp with no flavor. The establishment certainly has a ton of personality and I would even consider it endearing. But the waitress and the woman who seated us and rang our ticket were so rude that I wondered that was part of their schtick. There are better restaurants in Greenville, and certainly better service. read more

Please don't waste your time or money here! Made reservation when we got there a few minutes before time they gave our table to someone without reservation. I have been a patron of this restaurant since the 80's and the new generation is definitely not cutting the mustard! Good luck if you go there.. I've heard so many wonderful praises about Doe's Eat Place for years, so when I was traveling through the Delta, my partner and I decided to go out of our way for that legendary meal we have been hearing about. The publicity, rave reviews, all the hype made it sound like nirvana. We have dined in many dives and fancy steakhouses, and everything in between and would consider ourselves to be ready for any kind of food adventure. At Doe's, there is a security guard in the sketchy neighborhood parking area, no menus, no prices, sticky plastic tablecloths, flies buzzing and rude staff, well ok, we still were game. We tried the gumbo, which was alright but not authentic, the bone in ribeye, full of fat and inedible gristle, the greasy fries, limp iceberg lettuce salad drowning in oily dressing, and both kinds of shrimp-sautéed and fried. The shrimp were sweet and flavorful. The bill was $$$$ and for food, water and service that was marginal at best. I know what a good steak is, and I also know that a salad isn't lettuce and bits of tomato with an oil dressing that makes the lettuce slimy. There was more fat than meat on the steak, and the edible part was tough. For that, we were handed a bill for the two of us for more than $100. Mixed feelings on this place - a locally recommended but shabby roadside diner with a very limited menu. You literally walk through the kitchen on your way to your table but ok - that's Southern charm I guess but I could have done without seeing how dirty it was. No wine so we brought our own & even so our bill for a steak & a shrimp dinner was $100 - WHAT? (There are no menus so the waitress simply tells you what they have - which was not anything like what Yelp had shown for their menu by the way). So make sure you don't assume that a shabby diner has shabby prices. Having said all that, my husband had a great steak & I enjoyed their grilled shrimp. Finally had an opportunity to go visit this place. I've seen it on the Travel Channel and Food Network. So we decided to make the 2 hour trip and take the in-laws to eat here. Really run down place. Its original and eclectic, no doubt, but having to walk THRU the kitchen to be seated was a bit disturbing. Not only it is a HUGE food safety hazard but concerning once you see the lack of general hygiene practices from the staff. The food was OK, I've had better. The real disappointment was the bill. We asked for menus and we were told they did not have them. We were not told any prices. Looking at Yelp now I see a menu has been posted with prices. Now I am even more upset because what is posted is not what we were charged. We left feeling ripped off and underwhelmed. I have to say it is a once in a lifetime experience to see it, if you enjoy these types of places. However, I won't make the trip again and I can't say I would really encourage anyone else to either. read more

Best steak in the U.S. Nothing comes close. I heard that Elvis used to eat these steaks. The restaurant was literally on the other side of the tracks. We were on a trek to New Orleans and sites in between that and Memphis, and my wife knew about Doe's from years ago. I remember walking in Doe's and there was the owner grilling these huge steaks that were the size of hubcaps! The smell was intoxicating and I knew we were in for a 1st class meal! But, I was an idiot and forgot to make reservations, but the restaurant took pity on us and sat us in the kitchen. The kitchen had an overflow table. A cook was making fried shrimp - not the wussy type of shrimp, delicately grilled - this shrimp appeared to be cooked in a pan with a homemade breading mix that might have had lard in it. I was almost going to cancel the steak order and order shrimp! My wife and I have long ago given up trying to eat like a youngster. We eat "aging tail-end boomer" portions more and more often. Now, this was about 8 years ago, when we went to Doe's, so I could eat quite a bit more, back then. I saw little old ladies ordering 32 ounce steaks for themselves. I believe you could order 48 or even 64 oz. steaks - it has been a while - I can't remember the steak sizes, but I believe my wife and I split a 32 oz. steak. It overflowed a large plate on our table. We had this iceburg-type salad overflowing in homemade dressing and rolls and possibly potatoes - I can't remember every detail.... I do remember that the steak was absolutely delicious - spiced perfectly and cooked just the right amount of red/pinkness and it might have been a T-bone steak. Towards the end of the meal, my wife said: "Just pick up the bone and get the rest of the meat off". I immediately picked the T-bone bone up and started gnawing like Homer Simpson and a lady at a table next to us smiled and said: "He must really like it!". I have to agree, this was one of the best steaks I've ever had and it is nearly impossible to explain why. The steak was simply salted and peppered, nothing more and broiled in an oven. I asked if the meat came from a special farm because it was so tender and they said it was "choice" not even prime or black angus but choice! However the cow comes in whole and is butchered in house which must be in part what makes the difference. The other factor must be in the same old equipment that has been used for years. The fries are handcut and cooked in a cast iron skillet which reminded me of my grandmas The sautéed shrimp had a nice Cajun spice and the salad was simple but had a nice tart garlicky lemony bite. The garlic bread was disappointing because the salad had more of a garlic punch than the bread. But who really comes to Doe's for bread anyways? I am from Washington DC and as long as my wife is stuck working in the armpit of the south known as Greenville, MS I can at least look forward to more visits to Doe's BTW the neighborhood is rundown like people say, but if you are from a city like DC(the old DC that is) NYC Philly, it ain't nothing you ain't never seen before ;) you will be fine. Amazing Steak!!!! When my business partner brought me in to this place, I thought "What??, This place is a greasy spoon, hole in the wall". I was completely surprised. The grilled steaks were excellent. The only better steak I had was at "The Precinct" in Cincinnati where the steaks are professionally aged. I did not like that I had to get my own drinks out of the cooler, and the sides were limited. It is not service friendly from a business traveler's perspective. The shrimp appetizer, though, was itself worth the visit -- the shrimp were so large they were almost a meal in themselves. If I set aside the atmosphere and the lack of choices in sides, this place cannot be beat as a steakhouse except by a Jeff Ruby Steakhouse in Cincinnati. read more

Overdue review. Juke joint - bbq shack house!! Armed security outside. Yes, you're in the ghetto. It's a rougher part of town where sketchy ppl gather and shot gun houses are either dilapidated, abandoned or burned down. That's the hard reality of Greenville. Unfortunate. Anyways, I digress. This place is absolutely charming and had that authentic southern nitty/gritty soul/jazz vibe that was once Nelson Street. Imagine walking back in time when you step inside; it's circa 1940-80 time capsule. When you enter, you walk right into a messy kitchen with a heavy set man flipping large slabs of meat on hot grills with a loud fan blaring. Service is minimal. You will be ignored until your server is ready to take your order/assist you. When they come around, they are hospitable but short. The dining area doubles as a prep kitchen so it's cramped and cluttered with furniture, ppl and stuff. You feel the grease in this place. The table had a sticky red and white checkerboard vinyl tablecloth on it and the chairs were equally old and rickety. The mix matched tableware acquired over the years are still well used. Their knives need sharpening as it was difficult cutting into our steak. The walls were covered with dusty photos and memorabilia of times past. Toilet was a tight squeeze but adequate...probably best unmentioned. The food was ok. Salad was basic but was drowning in dressing. The ribeye and porterhouse were tough/chewy and minimally seasoned. Tomales and fries were alright. Family style dining recommended because it's impossible to devour half a cow on your own. The steak is HUGE. Food could've been better but I'm digging this piece of history!! It's a hole in the wall but don't expect it to be dirt cheap. $$$. Many thanks to my cousins for taking me here!! read more

If your $53.00 T-Bone steak is so tough with gristle, cartilage and silver skin that you cannot cut it, let alone eat it it, is a big deal. Food is good! Steak quality is really good. However, I felt like I had been time warped. The prices are outrageous and the shrimp were average. I didn't like the neighborhood. It's really dicey. I mean it's the kind of place where you'd better carry a gun and a few extra clips. Service was average and the place was NOISY and small. This place has no menu, it's dirty, and the staff is rude. It is also an extream fire hazard. The place has no clearly marked exits and with over 50 people packed inside with gas heaters and stoves everywhere.The heaters are open flame and at chair level, if you dont pay attention you will catch on fire. I read the reviews and I was excited to eat at Doe's, local flair, home cooking, fat melt in your mouth steaks, sounded wonderful. I got there and it was old, run down, dirty, and I sat on a metal folding chair. Their were no menus. Stupidly, I didn't ask the prices, how expensive could it be, and it was going to be really good, right? My husband and I ordered a rib eye ( we heard they were really big), a cup of gumbo, 2 dinner salads and a Corona beer. The steak had a decent flavor, but really tough. At least one half of the steak was uneatable gristle. The salads were iceburg lettuce, a couple chunks of tomatoe, a slice of red onion, totally saturated in a dressing that was so lemony it was almost unedible after the first bites.The gumbo was probably a real southern homemade soup with shrimp and white rice , ok flavor. The steak was served with french fries and garlic bread. When we got the bill we were blown away. $45 steak, dinner salads $10, gumbo $10. The bill was $74.50 Nothing was special. Perhaps this used to be a good place, but I feel like I got fleeced. read more

This place disappointed me greatly, we saw it on the Food Network and had to try it. Not only did we drive 4 hours, the service sucked, the place was NASTY, and the steaks were char-crispy. Then they charged us 106 dollars for the meal of 2 steaks, a hand full of fries, a soggy salad, and three pieces of grilled Walmart french bread. Really, they should be ashamed that their wallpaper is a mix of grease and dust bunny. Their floors are wavey like the ocean, the vinyl table clothes were sticky and I know haven't been been removed from the table's for a deep cleaning in YEARS. The flies were constant, and the chairs had big holes in them or either the wicker had been punched through. Then on top of it all it was so HOT in the kitchen, sat right beside where they were frying the ONLY side they serve, home fries. Sad I was so excited to experience a food network suggested steak in a MS dive. But, I just experience a royal screwing of burnt cow and filth. read more
