The food is simple but first class and don't be looking for white table clothes. It's all about the charm here. We started with the tamales. They are some of the best in the delta. I had the pleasure of eating at Doe's twice last week- once with my Uncle & Aunt and again with my girlfriends. Now, I haven't been home to the Delta in 5+ years. I live in Las Vegas and let me tell you, Doe's hasn't changed since I was a little girl. The salad, tamales, bread and steak are a must. I highly recommend Doe's if you are in Greenville. Don't judge a book by it's cover- what's inside is truly amazing. Bring your pocket book too because it's like a fancy steak house with a down home ambiance. I had been to a Doe's Eat Place on the Mississippi coast about six months ago, but it wasn't anything like the original in Greenville. We entered through a storefront and were ushed through a door that led right to the kitchen. It's such a unique place. We didn't have reservations, but they worked us in. The menu is about the size of Mike Leach's playsheet (this means it was about the size of an index card.) There isn't a lot of choices, but we came for steak, and that's what we got. It was so much meat! There was only two of us, and as soon as I saw our sirloin, I knew we were taking a lot of it home. We asked our server, and she said it was between 2 and 3 pounds. It was excellent! We also got a salad with Doe's traditional salad dressing and home made fries. My only regret is that I should have brought a bottle of whiskey in with me rather than buying beer there. We had a great experience and would come back again. read more

My children treated my husband and I to a meal for our 45th Anniversary. We ordered a ribeye steak dinner to go (one dinner). The Steak was tasty and tender usually with steak I'd have to pick meat out of my teeth afterwards but not with that steak that also made it a delightful experience. The downside is the price $70 with no appetizers or salad or drink I decided not to eat in because I generally tip generously and I would have been tempted to add something else in addition to the fries. I've been to Does countless times (perks of living in Greenville). The experience goes down like this: as you enter Nelson Street, you'll start to notice lots of run down shotgun wooden white houses. Or, maybe it's night, and the streetlights are dim. Street looks sketchy. No matter. Keep driving until you see a bunch of cars parked around one bigger looking rundown white house with a sign that says "Doe's Eat Place." A security guard, Joe, will guide you to a parking spot. Although he has served as a guard for years (maybe even a decade, not sure), you can tip him and ask him to keep extra watch over your vehicle. At first when you walk through the door, you'll be shocked to see a man (either Little Doe/Big Doe/Big Charles/Little Charles) hauling pounds of T-bones, sirloin, ribeyes, and mignon into a gigantic, flaming hot oven. If it's summertime, you'll be taken over with a wave of humidity and heat. If it's winter, you'll embrace the warm gust of air. You'll also might be shocked/impressed by the deer skulls hanging on the wall to your right. If there's a crowd of people that look like they're waiting, walk through them--politely--towards the hostess (Patricia) by the white refrigerator. (You might get a different lady than Pat). She's sweet as can be as long as you are as well. If it's Friday or Saturday night, she might give a little frown if you didn't reserve a table since it's typically busy then. She'll ask for your name and tell you to wait 15-50 minutes depending on the busyness. To kill time, you could grab some craft beer or import beer from the beer fridge. Just keep the bottle if you finish one or two. Look up the menu online to figure out what you want to order. Btw, BYOW but NOT byob. Does serves craft beers and generic Bud Light. You could also order Greenville's unique brown water, sweet tea, or coffee. Pat will call out your name and usher you to your table. Sometimes, she'll ask you if you wouldn't mind sharing a table with another party. (Pros of doing this include meeting interesting people, possibly engaging in fun conversations, and a much shorter wait time. Cons of doing this include potential awkwardness and no privacy to your convo). As you walk to your table, you pass through Aunt Florence (Flo) tossing her salad. No, I'm not being figurative. I'm being literal. If Does was a tribe or village,Aunt Flo would be like the well-respected elder of that tribe/village. Definitely say hi to her. Food: Definitely try their hot tamales as a side. Their fries are thick, greasy, and homemade. Some are limp and soft; some are crispy and textured. I also like their shrimp although that can be a hit or miss. Their salads are a hit or miss too, but the lemon pepper dressing is freshly squeezed everyday. Even though I've eaten at other non-chain steak restaurants in NYC and Atlanta, Does still has the thickest steaks with the best fat-to-meat ratio. And it's extremely juicy. You will salivate. Service: The waitresses have personality. They've worked at Does for over a decade. They're southern and sweet to the core. Make sure to tip them right! They're quite attentive and caring. The best way, really the only way, to start this review is with the simple statement: this is the best steak that I have ever had. That's the biggest takeaway of this review. However, if you want more... Doe's is a fairly small, definitely unassuming place. You'll want to make reservations if you have your heart set on going at a specific time because it fills up. The people working here are, in true southern form, polite, very friendly, and great at taking care of their guests. The ambiance is unique and couldn't be more true to it's roots. However, although all these aspects are great, you're probably mostly here for the food. And Doe's is here to impress! We started with the toasted bread for the table, which was nice. It was great at soaking up sauces. We got salads, fries, shrimp, and tamales to eat while we waited for the main attraction, and everything was pretty good! The salad probably could be skipped if you're not a big salad person, but the shrimp and the tamales were both great! We had a hard time saving room for the steak. For the main course we got the T-bone and, as I more or less stated at the beginning, wow. It cut like absolute butter and tasted the way steak would taste in a perfect world. However the sign on the front said in business since 1941so we walked in ...... to the kitchen . Tables with red and white checkerboard tablecloths and close together. Lots of kind and friendly local Mississippians to help us first timers. The menu is limited and it works for them. If you came for something other than steak, shrimp or hot tamales you will be out of luck. However if you come for steak, you are in the right place . Don't let the prices scare you. We ordered the bone in ribeye at $66. It comes with home fries and garlic bread. Salad was an additional $7. This steak was so big, I don't think Fred Flintstone could have eaten it. Honestly , it could have fed 3 or 4 people off of one steak. It had to have been a one inch thick 33 ounce bone in rib eye. Very flavorful, as good as any steak I have had from anywhere. Locals told me celebrities come in all the time. It's not uncommon to see Jerry Jones ( owner of the Dallas Cowboys) to fly into town to specifically eat a steak here. I can see why. I would be back. All about going to locally owned businesses,especially ones with character. We have eaten at the Does in Ridgeland Ms and it was great. The Does in Greenville needs a little work. I'll start with the good, everyone's steaks were great and the home fries with the steak juice is incredible. Our waitress was great, no issues at all. There's more than you can possibly eat for sure, and it's all super sized ( I had the 32 oz bone in ribeye). Now for the not so good, there's only one salad dressing and it's unique, vinegar and oil and some sour components that have lettuce soaked down in it. There's absolutely no consistency to mask wearing other than our waitress. We were packed in a small room (12 by 12), with 6 tables in it! Ours had 4 people, one had 6, one had 2, one had 5, and the large table had 12 people. The waitresses hit every chair as the squeezed through. I was panicking as the room filled. The restroom waiting area serves as storage for the restaurant and also includes the ice maker that the restaurant uses (anyone can access it while waiting for the restroom). You literally walk through the kitchen to get to your tables, on the way out you notice that they are cooking those wonderful steaks in the front room that you enter the restaurant through. So your beautiful steak is sitting on a platter well within 6 feet of whoever's waiting to be seated. When we left there were 4 or 5 people not counting the guy cooking the steaks or the waitresses coming through to get them. In the back kitchen where they make the fries, no masks. And you stop in that room to pay your bill, while new customers squeeze by..... Finally, the whole place needs a real good cleaning. Now, I don't expect this review will change anything about Does Greenville, they will likely continue to sell out and people will wait to be seated and leave extremely satisfied. But if you have any COVID concerns or cleanliness standards I suggest you read this review and go to another Does franchise that is following the rules, is located in a safe area, will let you know what your meal will cost prior to finishing it and doesn't give customers access to your food/drink. This place would certainly serve as my last meal on Earth or "death row" meal. A couple of things to remember when preparing to experience Doe's: 1. This is a place worth making a special trip for. And that means upwards of a 3 hour drive or flight. 2. Doe's does not serve liquor or wine. Only domestic beer and Heineken is available. However, you can bring your own wine or liquor. I suggest stopping by Chillie's Package Store (on Highway 82), which has the largest selection of fine wines in Mississippi, before dining at Doe's to pick up a fine red. 3. The only cut of meat that can be eaten by one person is the filet mignon. Therefore, unless you are really into filet, I suggest ordering one of the larger cuts and sharing with the table. The other cuts of meat are the massive sirloin, porterhouse, and (sometimes) T-bone. 4. Aside from order the steaks, the hot tamales, salad, shrimp, and garlic bread are must-orders Even the double-cut porterhouses at Morton's cannot compare with the size and flavor of the steaks here. I suggest ordering the large sirloin, which is around 40oz, or the porterhouse, which is usually 30oz. I am convinced that around the holidays, the porterhouses are cut thicker than at other times of the year. So while visiting my family in Mississippi my daughter and I go out to Doe's eat place. She suggested we go as it is one of the many attractions this town has to offer. When you walk in you are immediately in the kitchen. The is a guy to your left that is broiling up some steaks and shrimp. I've never seen anything quite like it, but again it is literally in the place where the cooks are cooking. The benefit- you get to see what's going on behind the scenes. Again, this spot is totally in the hood, and the quote friendly and entertaining security guard (an older gentleman) walks around with a badge and a gun and quoted this line to my daughter and myself... We say," how are you doing??" He replies," I'm doing good, I got this out here... But if I catch you slippin, it's over...!" Turns out he has been working for this family restaurant for a mighty long time. As history continues he explains he has to wear a bulletproof vest now because a while ago he took a bullet. I assume the place was being robbed or someone was just out to get him- but back to the good food- we shared a steak that was ok. The grilling was perfection. Prepared just like I requested. Tender and juicy. But the texture of the beef was unlike anything I have ever had before. It's DIDNT quite melt in my mouth. I felt that the quality of the meat may have been the best in the area so I was content. On the other hand, the broiled shrimp were swimming in the buttery spicy lemon sauce that was good. Pitchers of Mississippi water were placed just about on every table with its yellowish tint of flavor that this state is known for, "Mississippi Mud!" But hey, who am I to try and change anything. This place has been here for years and has been supported by the locals. Why when you step pass the front door where the kitchen is, you come across another kitchen in the next room where "momma" is making fresh salad with her bare hands and also two big wolf brand stoves are either frying French fries or frying shrimp- there are just about 6 or seven things on the menu and the locals live it! Well consider me a local then. This place was a gem in the middle of the hood in the middle of nowhere! If you are traveling if just knew to Greenville, MS pay this spot a visit. How does a legendary place like Doe's only have 10 Yelp reviews!? This is one of those MUST TRY steak houses in the US. It is a bona fide joint - as jointy as they come. Expect an off-duty police officer to escort you from your car inside. A little off putting, but don't let it scare you off. You enter Doe's through the kitchen. I'm not familar with MS health codes, so not sure how this flies, but it's neat to see the huge pots of food bubbling while you wait for your table. Then you enter into the seating area through the food prep station. Tables are crowded close together with 1970s vinyl table cloths. The portions are huge. Our family of five can split a couple of decent size steaks with leftovers. They are served au jus and cooked to perfection. Really tender and really flavorful. And they also serve tamales which are interesting. We're from Texas, and of course MS tamales are different from TX tamales - skinny and long with more masa and less meat than I'm used to. They also tend to be greasier. Doe's tamales are well known, but ultimately since it's not what I'm used to I'm not a convert. But they make a good appetizer and are worth trying. Pay attention to the hours. The first time we tried to go, the restaurant was closed, though the kitchen was open, and they offered to sell us some tamales. We've been two subsequent times over the past several years, and it was so worth it, we planned whole days around dinner in Greenville. I don't give it 5 stars, because I give VERY few of those. As you pass by the steak broiler and around the cooler, do not grab a beer (it's seven dollars; however, if you're on a loose budget, then grab a beer). Wait to be seated (you have three choices: kitchen, sports-memorabilia room, or agriculture-memorabilia room). Okay, now you're seated. Congragulations. You're almost there. Next, when the waitress comes (she might be less friendly if you have a northern accent; who cares), order a steak: rare. That's it. Everything else will be expensive. Rare. God help you if you order this steak anything but rare. I don't care if you've never ordered a steak rare. I don't care if you once ordered a steak rare and didn't like it. If you order your steak medium rare, I am going to come down from Philadelphia to slap you at your table, in front of your girlfriend (or wife, or daughter, or whomever). If you order it medium, I will shoot you. Right in the face. Now, with that unpleasant but very important matter aside, let me explain your final two instructions. Wait for your inch-and-a-half thick steak to arrive. When it does, pick up a fork, cut it, and eat it. Yes, a fork. A knife won't be necessary. You will taste the best steak money can buy. I don't mean to brag (okay, maybe I do, a little bit), but I've had a lot of great steaks all over the world. I also have reasonably well-attuned tastes. If you're not ready to believe that the best steak on the face of this planet happens to be on the north side of Greenville, Mississippi, then, well, I don't know what to tell you. Let me just say the walking into Doe's was like walking into my grandmother's home, warm and inviting. We were greeted outside the building and even without reservations, ushered in and quickly seated. The first thing you'll notice about Doe's is that you walk THROUGH the kitchen areas! In the first room you will find the broiler where they cook your steaks and large vats of tamales that have been cooked to perfection. In the next room, the first thing you'll probably see is Aunt Florence. Aunt Florence has manned the salad bowl since the inception of Doe's in 1941. Don't let the appearance discourage you. Its part of the experience. Second, this is not a white table cloth restaurant. It is 'rustic', to say the least. But it is clean. You walk through the kitchen to get to the dining rooms. There are three. The staff is dressed casually. The patrons are too. There are no pretenses here. Keep going. Its worth it. Third, the ordering is not what you are used to. There are no menus. The waitress will tell you what they have. There are no prices. Just know its going to be pricey. Maybe over priced. But keep going. Fourth, you won't get a lot of choices. They are known for their tamales and steaks. We both had the filet. It comes with fries. You can get a salad and garlic bread. No steamed broccoli. No creamed spinach. None of the sides other steak houses offer. The steaks were exceptionally good. The fries too. The salad comes with only one dressing and it was put on heavy. There is no desert cart. One thing we didn't know but wished we did: they have beer, water, tea etc, but not wine or liquor. You can bring your own wine and liquor. Time & again over the years, we have heard of the original Does Eat Place & the wonderful steaks. This place had really been hyped up, so it was a must when we visited the area, & our expectations were high. We looked at their website & found lots of info on franchise opportunities & their history along with a basic menu but no prices & nothing about reservations. The steak lived up to the reputation & was one of the best I have ever eaten, BUT it goes downhill from there. I didn't even mind that we were eating in what is essentially a tiny, rundown shack where everyone enters through the kitchen, everyone is shoulder to shoulder & the building appears to be falling down. That is all supposed to be part of the charm of the place & I get that, no problem. I did mind some other things though. 1. The place is in a rundown residential neighborhood, one that I would probably be very careful in by day & would avoid like the plague at night. A guard has to patrol the street parking which is limited & all that is available. 2. They have time, resources, & space on the table to provide trifold pamphlets detailing their history & promoting franchise opportunities but do not provide a menu in the restaurant & online provide a menu but no prices. RED FLAG! The woman who seated us seemed a little irritated that we didn't have reservations, but we had no way of knowing we needed them. They kindly crammed us in a corner. 3. The salad (found out later it was $5 each) is lousy. Iceberg lettuce, a little purple onion, maybe some tomato, one choice of dressing (oil & vinegar with lemon juice), and so salty that it is barely edible. One member of our group couldn't get past the salt & didn't eat his at all. 4. The much hyped tamales were about the size & length of a small cigar, wrapped in parchment, instead of corn husk, & were mediocre in taste compared to most I've eaten. 5. We consumed one order of tamales (6 on the plate), 4 unsweet teas, 4 lousy salads, 4 orders of chewy home fries, & 4 (10oz is their smallest steak) filets & left $250 behind & that includes the tip of less than 15%. What can I say that hasn't already been said? With a name like Doe's Eat Place, you know it' must have generations of history behind it. If you're new to Greenville or the Delta in general and you're using your GPS to bring you here, don't be alarmed as you drive up - your GPS hasn't flaked out - yes, Doe's is definitely in the hood! You wouldn't believe this converted turn of the century shack, er house is home to steaks pushing the $50 range and worthy of high praise from the Food Network and other media. Yep, Doe's is definitely an original I see that Doe's had franchises now but I don't see how the copies can recreate the charm of the original, nor how the steaks can taste the same unless they come out of that ancient, very well seasoned broiler. As others have noted, you enter through the kitchen through the screen door with a knife holding it closed and walk right past that turn of the century broiler to the dining area just like you're walking through your Grandma's kitchen (if your Grandma lived in the Mississippi Delta that is). You'll sit at tables and chairs that look like they've been there 50 years (and they probably have) and there won't be a menu. Prices? Don't even ask - if you have to ask, you can't afford it. But be prepared to throw down at least $50 a person minimum. Get the house salad with the dressing that comes with it (don't bother asking for your usual) and share the steak and shrimp and garlic bread. I'm sure the fries are just the same frozen ones every restaurant serves but dang if they don't taste special too, and don't forget to order some tamales and of course sweet tea to wash it down with (and it has to be sweet - you're in the Delta, don't even think of asking for unsweetened, I don't even know if they'd have any.) Sit back, take in the Delta's ambiance where time stands still and enjoy one of the best steak dinners you've ever had. read more

Doe's is certainly an experience. You are led into the forgotten-era shotgun house, past the steak oven, through the kitchen, to your dining room. You get a first-hand look at the food prep process. The steaks are cooked in a two-flame gas oven. The fries are cooked by huge black skillets on a gas stove. The fries are great - they're kinda soft and soggy instead of crispy. The only reason I didn't give Doe's 5 stars is due to their lack of a ribeye on their menu. The ribeye is my fav cut of beef. Be sure to get a coffee-can full of tamales to go. read more

A great evening. Knew going in it would be expensive and it was. The food did not disappoint. Best steak in USA husband read and it was tops. Only one to compare would be Linda's La Cantina in Orlando. (They never advertise. A crowded, local place). No need to order salad or fries. You are going for the steak and everything is a la carte. Don't complain about price as menu is told to you and prices not given. Just enjoy and expect to pay. Pictures won't go. Sorry. I loved every bite. read more
