Morty not only welcomed me, but asked my name, what I did for a living, and how satisfied I was with my job within the first minute of meeting. A natural at conversation and customer service skills - my new best friend that I had never met. While he prepared my dogs, I asked him about the "ripper" sauce that is on the menu. Not only did I get a sample of his handmade recipe, but the origin story of how he discovered it while serving in the military in Germany. It was a sweet / tangy mustard and onion concoction that I will definitely order on my next trip if it's available on his rotating menu at that time. My Chicago Dog and Chili Cheese Dogs were perfection. The Chicago Dog had all the proper fresh ingredients with a Vienna Beef dog and a soft poppy seed bun. With one bite I was transported back to my frequent Chicago Dog lunches when living in Chicago almost 30 years ago. The Chili cheese dog was just as magical with a creamy warm cheese sauce between the soft bun and dog and then covered in a no-bean saucy meat chili...just as God intended. Morty's is only open 7 hours a week - 11:00am - 1:20pm W, TH & FR, so plan accordingly and go meet my new best friend and get a couple of life's simple all-American pleasures.

The bun is also grilled and sautéed onions, bell peppers and jalapeños are toppings of choice along with mustard, ketchup, mayo and flaming hot cheetos. I did mine with everything minus the cheetos. Beautiful!! At only $6 I felt like I had swindled the owners. A product this big, bold and beautiful could fetch a ten-spot in a sit down diner. The two people operating the grill were some of the nicest folks you could meet. I will definitely be looking for them every time I'm driving down the BLVD.

I didn't grow up eating them--my family didn't have much money--but I discovered them later while exploring little neighborhood spots around Tampa and Ybor City. Somewhere along the way, the Cubano became my sandwich. So when I ordered a Cubano, a bag of chips, and a Mexican Coke from Thompson Bros Cubanos, I expected a good lunch. Instead, I got a taste of home. The sandwich was everything a Cubano should be. The pork was tender, the ham and Swiss were perfectly balanced, the mustard and pickles added just the right bite, and most importantly, the bread was authentic. If you've ever had a real Tampa Cubano, you know the bread is what makes it. Crisp on the outside, soft inside, and sturdy enough to hold everything together without getting in the way. Talking with owner Clint Thompson made the experience even better. He grew up in Tampa and has his Cuban bread shipped from La Segunda Bakery in Ybor City--the same bakery that's been making Cuban bread since 1915. That isn't marketing; it's respect for the tradition. Clint greeted me like an old friend, and we spent time talking about Florida, food, and his plans to open a full Florida-inspired restaurant. After hearing his vision, I can honestly say it's one of the restaurants I'm most excited to see become a reality. If you've never had an authentic Tampa-style Cubano, this is the place to start. And if you're someone who misses Florida the way I do, don't be surprised if the first bite transports you back there.
