I'm updating my review of Paul's Drive In. Today was a much better experience than last time. I came to Pauls for a late lunch and ordered only a double cheeseburger with mustard, pickle and onions and a Coke. That's my standard test for any burger joint. Sometimes I'll get fries or tots, but I don't really care for either generally. Today I got a big old Smashburger. The patties were thin crispy and more than ample. Great flavor and sear on the meat. Friendly gal at the front register who allowed me to take my time as I was unfamiliar with the menu. She was very kind. The floor is a little dirty, and it smells kind of funky, which is appropriate for a good burger joint. I will be back. Thanks to my wife for convincing me to give Paul's a second chance. read more

Took the family and another family to Paul's. Loved the atmosphere of the old diner, but they are in dire need of maintenance. I wouldn't let my kids use the bathrooms after seeing them. I loved the food, but the kids' orders were wrong and when brought to the cashier they didn't seem happy about it- not sure if its a normal occurrence or what. If I just got my food through the drive-thru and ran, it would have been a completely different experience, but seeing the inside, it makes me worried about what I don't see. read more

Their cheeseburger was definitely very good! I did not like how much mustard was in their sauce but everything else about it was very good. It wasn't the cleanest environment but the tables were all cleaned off. I didn't think the swivel seats were very comfortable since they were very stiff and rigid. The ATM is currently out of service but the two arcade games seem like they might work. They have limited trash cans. I think the highlight of this place is definitely the food not the atmosphere. read more

This place has completely given up. The entire restaurant was filthy and looked t like it hadn't seen a health inspector in years. The French fries were dripping with grease and unfit to eat. My double bacon cheeseburger had bacon that was both completely burnt and half raw at the same time I don't know how that even happens.. I had to take it all off the burger just to be able to finish half of the horrendous sandwich. Something is wrong with the soda dispenser which made the drinks have some weird 'off' taste to them that we couldn't drink. I heard another customer go up to the counter and complain and the girl working just said yeah we know we don't know what's going on. I think the only edible part of the meal was my daughter's corn dog which she said she enjoyed. We're currently driving somewhere to get something to eat to get that disgusting taste out of our mouths. $50.00 we'll never get back. read more

I used to go to the Old Pauls Drive In and the food was great. So I thought I would try it . The hamburger was thin and not well seasoned - was dry with very little condiments . Bread was hard . The fries were not done and the onion rings coating was to much so no flavor from the onions. I will not be returning. I expected an old fashioned hamburger which I did not receive. Fries to be crispy on out side and tender in the middle. would not recommend to any one. read more

BEWARE! Like the other recent reviews, this place was nasty enough for me to post it to warn you. I found mold in my tots...and wish I hadnt eaten most of them before I noticed. I wanted an old style, good n greasy burger, found them online. Went inside because I wanted to see how clean it was when trying it for the first time. It was smelly inside (like old water, must, and a rodent den), there was a TON of dust/dirt on the cieling from out of the air ducts, nothing other then the sitting area has been cleaned or cared for since the 80s it seems. Yhe very large woman taking my order said nothing to me she just looked at me ans waited for me to say my order. I asked if fries are better than the tots, she said she doesnt eat the food there (very telling). I actually had the idea to call the health dept while standing there. Then I noticed on the wall it shows they havent had a regular inspection since 2017. I waited a VERY long time for a big boy burger and tots (around 4pm). Meanwhile I saw the redhead drive thru lady put tots in a bag for an order then used her bare hand to pull out a few fries that she inadvertently scooped in also, and just throw them back in with the rest of the fries smh. The burger actually was very on spot...and very good, they even toast the bun to a slight crisp with oil/mayo. But while eating and driving I noticed a sickening piece of black something inside my tot, so i opened it up to see what it was....and its freaking MOLD! its so sickening! I inspected the burger, but didnt find anything alarming, but i see some other reviewers have, especially with the uncooked chicken. This place is a good, old school concept gone to ABSOLUTE TRASH...eat at your own risk. It should be shutdown...until the owner actually cares about it! read more

We waited - no joke! - almost a full hour in a drive through with 3 cars in front of us. The food was mediocre and the service was TERRIBLE. Hadn't been here in years and happened to be in the area. Normally would order drive thru but I wasn't in a rush so I came inside. Well kept inside and quick service while the drive thru seemed to have a constant flow. Couldn't decide between loaded chili fries or a spicy chicken sandwich and asked for help from the cashier. As recommended, I ordered the spicy chicken. It was perfectly crispy and delicious. I would definitely get it again! But the star of the show is always the zebra cone. They make them pretty big from what I remember so I just ordered a small and it was plenty. I can't stop here and not get a zebra cone. Perfect finish and great as always! Tried to go order some food but the employees in there are terrible at their job. One person was holding a bag while the other put onion rings in it. We've been coming here since Paul's Drive In was Paul's Pizza, and the food and service have always been great. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the last two times we were there. The cheeseburger tasted different (and not in a good way), the chicken sandwich tasted like it was warmed up in a microwave, the onion rings I know had been sitting for a bit because they weren't even warm (definitely not the onion rings that were some of the very best in the city because they were made-to-order), and the shakes didn't even have milk in them. Trust me on that... it was chocolate and ice cream that was blended together, and no milk. The last time we were there, we only ordered those shakes, and we had to tell the guy three times that we wanted shakes and not malts. 15 minutes and $12.00 later, we got a shake and a malt with no milk. Really good thin, diner style burgers! I had the double cheeseburger and I'd have to say that next time I would be fine ordering the single. They may be thin, but they are big! Hubby ordered his with bacon and they actually asked him how many slices....thought that was different, but promising. Turns out, the question is important because it's 99 cents a slice We also shared some tots which were crunchy and not greasy - perfect! We decided to share a hot fudge malt because we couldn't just pass on a shake because we were full! The large is large and it did not disappoint. The place is clean and has plenty of seating. I freakin love places like this. Big Boy's, you've met your match! Paul's is about 20-25 minutes from my house. So it's probably not a place I'll visit unless I'm in the area. But I loved it. I had a cheeseburger plain, onion rings, and iced tea. The onion rings were exactly like Big Boys and Hy-Boys, exactly. They even taste the same. They had crusties in the bottom of the bag, and were excellent. The cheeseburger was huge, and over sized. I couldn't eat the complete sandwich. The shakes looked fantastic but my allergies were bugging me so I didn't order one. It reminds me of malt shop. Malt shops are really good, and Paul's knows how to keep it good. Only thing is, it's pretty far from my house, but I'm so glad I finally found it. It will be on my list of favorites, that's for sure. read more

This KC classic drive through / eat in hamburger joint makes wonderful food. They cook it fresh while you wait so don't expect it to be as fast as McD or BK. The food isn't sitting there all precooked. It's made after you order. The shakes are delish, too. We have never had a single bad experience here. They've even let me walk up to the drive through window on foot when I had my dog with me. Most won't...can't promise they still will. That was during Covid. This is one of those bits of history. I hope it stays in business for as long as I live here and beyond. read more

I got to the register just for the worker to walk away. We assumed she was grabbing something real quick and would come back. Meanwhile, 6 groups of people ordered next to us at the other register. The worker never came back to help us and we had to go to the back of the line. The other worker never once asked us to come join her line. Instead she just let everyone cut us. Total we waited 30 minutes just to place our order. It wasn't even that busy in here... there's absolutely no reason for this to happen in a "fast food" business. To top everything off, they got our order wrong, the soda had like no flavoring/syrup in it, and the burgers tasted worse than my high school cafeteria. Just overall no seasoning or flavor. So we had heard about the pork tenderloin sandwiches here and read about the history of the place. So for Saturday late lunch about 1:30 pm we drove over to Grandview to try them out. The dining room was closed so the lane for drive up was out to the street. Luckily the line moved well and we were soon off the street. We ordered those with onion rings and tried out their milk shakes. My wife liked the Oreo one. I tried a Shamrock special... But it wasn't green like in the picture but more of a light chocolate. It tasted like an Andes mint. The crunchy onion rings were really good for me, but my wife thought it was time for them to change their cooking oil. We both thought the tenderloins were wonderful and worth coming back for, though this isn't in our neighborhood or regular travel pattern. The location is just off I-470 and not far from I-49. So today I said, "Are you feeling silly??" And for Sunday lunch we drove back over for hamburgers. Today the dining room was open so we went inside. Very clean and sharp even though it's an older place. We both thought the fries were pretty good. I got some fried mushrooms and thought they were some of the best I've ever had. They are full sized and batter fried. Too much mushroom flavor for my wife. They were very hot and juicy. Definitely would get those again. We each tried different burgers. My wife liked her's but was surprised the meat wasn't hotter since everything else was. My double was nice and warm for me though. I thought it every bit as good as some other places in the metro known for their large - takes two hands to eat burgers. Despite having had ice cream Saturday, my wife tried the cherry mash cyclone. Though I got the small for her .. It was a lot larger than other ones you'll order in town. She thought the crumbles were smaller and less plentiful than one she had ordered last year from another place, but she ate all of it and said it was good ice cream. Well since she got ice cream, I decided to have a small twist cone. Wow... Small cone with lots of ice cream. And the ice cream was very creamy. A definite winner. Worth coming here just for an ice cream treat. So while we won't be here often. ... We will definitely be back. Mostly for the tenderloins and ice cream I think. I was moving. We stopped for a burger for dinner. 36 minutes after I ordered, I asked the lady if she forgot me. She went to the cook. Then came back telling me they were going to make it from scratch. Huh? After 20 more minutes. I just asked for a refund. The cook came tearing out from the kitchen saying that he didn't know how to give me a refund. I told him, the money I gave you-give it back. He started getting aggressive. Then he said that I wasn't going to get my burger. "Wait, so I give you money for a burger and you refuse to cook it. Give me my money back!" Then he started talking shit. He said I could meet him in the parking lot to get paid. Well, if that's my only option, okay! I went outside. A different employee came out and said to come back tomorrow.
