My first time using Martine, took my small rescue dog in for a nail trim and anal expression. Martine was cold and unfriendly from the start. She ignored my request to comfort my scared, shaking dog during the nail trim. I tried to soothe my dog with my voice and Martine told me my "high pitched voice" wasn't helping. A bit rude. She was fast and clearly experienced but did not attempt to make me or my scared dog feel comfortable, even despite my requests. Maybe this style works for some dogs and people. It was a very unpleasant experience for my sweet Josie and for me. I hate to post a bad review, maybe she was having a bad day. When we left, I heard her warmly greet her next client. I'll admit that I am particular but after receiving a few "bad" cuts, I was so relieved when I found Martine. Not only is she patient with me but I honestly do not know how she can trim their faces so perfectly. I can barely brush them, they are so wiggly. After working at most of the well known grooming operations in town she went out on her own and offers grooming by appt Tuesday- Saturday. After adopting Suds from the Oregon Humane Society in May, I quickly realized we would need to keep his nails trimmed and his body bathed - he loves to roll in the grasses, especially the stinky ones. He passively aggressively ignored me for 2 hours the last time I bathed him, and I wouldn't attempt to cut his nails myself after a bad older pet experience. Suds had some anxieties about being around other dogs and I was nervous to take him to a big pet store grooming operation and drop him with someone that didn't really know what they were doing. I needed someone that knew dog behavior. Not only does Suds love being around Martine, but she knows how to handle his naughty outbursts. Since Martine stays pretty busy and she seems to book fast, I usually will text her a week or a few days before I want to get Suds in. She is usually always grooming so it can be difficult to reach her on the phone. Her location is super convenient for me, right next to Safeway in the Murray and Allen shopping center, with plenty of parking in the front or back. I would highly recommend Martine. I decided to try a new groomer that was closer and more convenient, but that turned out to be a very bad decision on my part. Honestly the worst cut my dog has ever gotten. I know it is usually really tough to get an appt with any groomer the same day so I was extra appreciative! Its not a fancy place and its just Martine, but I actually like that more than the typically pet grooming places, feels like my dog will have her full attention. Its a simple environment, Buddy was very clam unlike the usual whiny scared himself every grooming trip we had before. I took our Pomeranian Sampson in for a full cut. He gets so hot when the weather is warm. When I went to pick him up he was beautiful! Martine did a fantastic job! He can get squirmy and nippy and she still made him look like a little prince! She was so much more affordable than any of the other places around here. We used Martine twice and the second time we should have just left with our girls. The last time we used her was April 2015 and it has taken me 5 months to write this review. I understand hesitation on the part of the girls when going in to the shop but my girls were scared - a reaction we have never seen before, not even with the vet. You run a business where you deal with people, people call and you don't have time to talk and you expect to speak thru texting, when I asked you to call me back so we could talk about the grooming process due to my dogs difficult needs you said you didn't have time to CHAT. Well chatting is what makes a person feel comfortable, chat makes and helps one to get an idea of the type of person you are on the other end of the phone. Direct dialog is the only way to get to know someone. Saying you don't have time means you should shut down and keep the comfortable customers you have and don't put yourself out there like you are a company that needs new clients. Simply stay in your texting world and expect these type of reviews if you don't have time to CHAT! I own and operate a business and understand the need to speak with customers, and always leave that door open, no matter how small or insignificant the call we answer and always have time for direct dialog with our customers, and we maintain a 5 star rating. I don't write reviews often, but I wanted to share a word of caution after our recent experience. This was our first experience at Dog Grooming By Martine, and we were looking forward to giving it a try because of the great reviews. When I brought in my Aussie, I asked for his hind legs and rear to be trimmed up, along with his paws. That's all. When I picked him up, my poor dog was nearly completely shaven from behind, his tummy was totally shaven, and his head and ears were given some kind of dog "buzz cut." Not only is this totally not what I asked for, but the grooming job looks so odd! We've had him groomed at several places over the years in different cities, but nobody has ever trimmed his head! My toddler didn't recognize our dog when he saw him. My poor dog looks so weird. He does not look like an Australian Shepherd anymore. In addition to the grooming job being terrible, when I handed Martine the cash payment (only cash/check accepted, so I had to go to Safeway to get cash), she seemed to presume I was giving her a $10 tip. She took the cash ($80 for the $70 service), and after walking away with it, turned to me and said, "oh, did you want change?" This exchange was so awkward, and I was in such shock from my dog's appearance, that I just wanted to get out of there and said "oh, no that's okay." Yikes. We won't be returning. read more

First of all, shame on me for not listening to other reviews and not going with my gut feeling right when I met Martine. Being a first time customer I would have thought she'd be more friendly, and I'd be able to tell she's a dog lover. She was neither. She only asked what we wanted done with our two Shih Tzu. We were very specific as to only wanting a light trim, paws left like a teddy bear and trimmed up. When I picked up my girls, the only thing I could say was...OH MY GOD!!! I was in total shock at what she had done to one of them. Never in all the years we've been having them groomed has anyone butchered them like they were today. Martine said she HAD to cut one of them down to nothing because she was screaming!!! She even took a video. However when I dropped them off she said that they weren't very matted. If she was having that difficult of a time, she should have given us a call to give us the choice of butchering her or picking her up. Which is exactly what I would have done. I've never had another groomer complain about any issues with our girls. Needles to say, my beautiful Shih Tzu no longer looks anything like a Shih Tzu. This groomer should at the very least be fined for what she did to our dog. If you love your fur kids, DO NOT take them to this place. I have been taking my 2 dogs to Grooming By Martine for about 2 years. I like going to Martine and so do my dogs. She always does a professional job (we have haircuts and nail trims) and they happily enter her shop when we arrive. One of my dogs is a rescue. And though he has been a handful she never gave up on him. She has made creative (and successful!) suggestions to me on how to overcome some of his quirks. The shop is small, secure and just a good place to have your pet groomed. She clips my dog how I ask her to. He is not a show dog. He just needs a good haircut for a decent price in a safe environment. Martine is not a chit chatty person...I like that I can drop them off and be on my way. She works best with texting, which I like as well. Try to schedule in advance. I think she only accepts checks or cash. Verify that though. Prices are reasonable. I have been taking my dog, Sir Doobie, to Martine for about two years. Doobie has anxiety issues and he loves Martine. That is the best reference there is. When I adopted his brother, Dodger, they both got to go visit Martine. Both of my boys are springer spaniels, but they have different kinds of hair and Martine does such a great job, I can't imagine going anywhere else. Martine has a clean and welcoming grooming salon. I always feel comfortable leaving the boys with her because I know they are in a safe environment. Doobie had gone to a corporate grooming salon before and it was not a good experience for us. Grooming By Martine gives us a good feeling. Often there are other dogs which is great for D and D, because they don't have many other social experiences. So they have new friends.
