We've done two different classes and our dog has enjoyed them. The place is a very nice, new and well-done facility in Healdsburg. It's easy to find via Google Maps and there's a plenty of space to walk and train dogs. We've never tried their pet adoption operations but when we're there it seems to be a pretty good environment.

We adopted our dog there and Gabe is one of the most caring, knowledgeable and kind professionals that I've met. His first priority is the wellbeing of the animals in their charge. He is worth his weight in gold and a wonderful source of animal behavioral knowledge. Secondly, our cat disappeared in May of 2017 and after doing everything we could to find him, we feared the worst. Months went by and we relocated from Sonoma County to the Central Coast. We were shocked to receive a call from Gabe, letting us know that our cat was found, and he was able to locate us thanks to a microchip. FOLKS, MICROCHIPS WORK! But remember to always have your information current! Because we live much farther away, the staff, and especially Alison the AMAZING Shelter Director were all very accommodating and patient about us getting to Healdsburg to retrieve him, because it fell on a Holiday weekend. In the meantime they kept communication ongoing, and because our cat was underweight, they were especially concerned for his health and did everything they could to find something palatable to help him eat. Our kitty is now home and thriving again. Healdsburg is SO fortunate to have such a beautiful afacility and such a caring staff for the local animal population!

She appears to be the real deal. When our cats were old enough to be spayed/neutered, the staff provided transportation for the surgery to and from the vetinerian. There was no cost to us for the surgey Some of the animals Blythe takes in are at the end of the road- injured, disabled, recovering from trauma or illness. Most folks don't have the patience or time to save an animal in dire straits. It's admirable, to say the least. These Karens complaining about smelling pee or getting feelings hurt by staff are just being petty, trying to discredit these folks doing good work. Find something more productive to do. Blythe and crew are doing a tremendous job.

I read someone complaining about the smell, of course neglected dogs and cats who are being saved are going to have a smell. Here is a perfect example. I was speaking with Blythe and she tells me she's gonna have to call me back. I contact her the next day and find out that someone had randomly left five dogs somewhere while moving. She stopped everything she was doing to prioritize, saving those dogs so of course when she went to get them, it was not like she was picking them up from the groomers, but the exact opposite and yes they smelled obviously it's not her fault the dogs were left in that state, she did everything she could to get them healthy get their shots up to date and to make sure to find suitable homes. When I first read the negative review, I was skeptical and i was being very critical. Don't believe everything you read here keep in mind. There is a bunch of people trying to sell puppies vs save them.

I completed the foster application online a couple of weeks before our trip, the adoption manager immediately called me and reviewed which dogs might be a good fit, and once in Ukiah we went to the shelter & were introduced to 2 senior male dogs (Sully and Kimber). We decided to do a short term foster with Kimber who was easier to walk and knew a few commands. The manager provided us plenty of food & treats along with emergency instructions, and the Airbnb owner had already provided dog beds & bowls (otherwise I am sure the shelter could have loaned them). Kimber was a very chill dog and we would definitely do another short term foster during our next trip. Recommended for adoption, lots of sweet animals like Kimber looking for a home. Update 1/13/26: the Airbnb owner adopted Kimber after we introduced them to each other!

The shelter itself is very nice for an animal shelter. It's welcoming with many programs besides just animal adoption. The animals have cozy places to stay while waiting for a home. There's a kitten room where we found our newest family member, catios, dogs runs with heating and AC I believe, it always seems cozy in there. They don't just have dogs, cats and bunnies, they also usually have guinea pigs, rats and other animals like one time there was a rooster. I definitely recommend this animal shelter for adoption, and or volunteering.

We wanted an adult dog, and we found out, the young pup was 6 years old. She was initially shy, but could tell she was very sweet. We picked her and she picked us. We adopted her, and Miss Rita is the sweetest dog we have ever had living with us. The entire adoption process and care they give the dogs were fantastic. You can tell they have compassion and love with all the dogs. I would highly recommend you take a look at them for adoption of these wonderful furry friends.

A few things i noted was general treatment of myself and certain things i heard others asked regarding after care that i apparently did not need, but find myself needing as i get home. Like a sedative prescription for my high energy cat. Also, if you have a common looking cat, please make sure they are the correct cat upon pick up. If my assumption of what i walked into when picking him up is correct, they almost switched him with someone else's. Ease of appointment checking/drop off/pickup was tops, he seems to have been in good care while receiving treatment. Realizing some people have trouble speaking up and making sure everyone is receiving the same amount of care regardless of masculine of feminine appearance is my only critique. Sonoma county seems to have a problem with this, which is understandable since most of the men here are overbearing and surly.

My dog Cherly was a homeless hound from Oklahoma who lived at the Big Dog Rescue for a year and a half of her life. Cheryl saved my girl and gave her a chance even though no one wanted her as she was one of their long term residents. This peaceful palace is a fully fenced sanctuary. Cheryl (the owner) and staff has put so much love and care into her passions. They dogs she's rehabilitated, the care they receive, they support they get. You have to be one lucky pup to be at the Big Dog. My dog loves coming back to the Big Dog for visits. She's super excited and happy. Cheryl wants to make sure her dogs are going to the home that is the perfect match. She will carefully screen as every rescue should do. I've read some of the 1 star reviews on here. And Cheryl is right, dogs are not ment to spend hours outside. What if it's hot? She is correct and has every right to be concerned where her dogs are placed. If you are not a good fit of she is not comfortable with your household, then I'm sure there is another match out there waiting for you to save them.

After researching the topic, I can see why they would not consider us for adoption with that application ;-) However, I wrote back asking to speak with them to understand why they did not spend more than a second to reply (I was looking for some suggestions on if we are ok to adopt or if we should not even bother). The image was from a public database that anyone can access and contains public information. I include the link to this PUBLIC database here. I understand people don't show up to appointments, but charging the full amount is not only absurd, it shows the organization doesn't care if the dog and the adopter are not a good fit. Careful Cloverdale she is coming for your money , not customer service, from what I heard on the phone , pretty much hates the customer and seems to have low opinion of dogs. Strange considering what she does for a living . I'm sure she will take your money and treat your pet baby poorly.
