Excellent store in Newtown, we bought pet treats and a special harness for our corgi - really love that place.

I believe this establishment (as you can see from some photos posted) used to be at the end of the strip mall, it's since moved into the bigger location just at the other end in the newer portion of the strip. This location used to be a pet valu I believe , or another chain store. The location is huge and has a wide variety of products. I honestly couldn't or wouldn't look through the whole store. The girls here were super helpful and able to give me a lot of advice ! The prices are also pretty good for what I can remember. read more

We love this store. They have everything one could possibly need - food, treats, toys, gates, harnesses, collars, leashes, garments, bowls, grooming supplies, etc. They keep cans of food by the cash register as a suggestion for customers to buy and donate, helping out local rescue orgs., which is really a wonderful idea. The employees are all very kind and go out of their way to help. The few times they've been out of our dog's food, they've transported bags from one of the other stores to the Newtown location within a day or two for us. Our dog gets 1/2 of one of their amazing dog cookies with carob frosting every night after dinner. (Yes, our little girl is super-spoiled.) We were all out of them on this overwhelmingly busy day and couldn't get to the store before closing, and Sarah was willing to take my CC # over the phone and leave the bag of cookies outside for me to pick up! There's still a lot to be said about retail stores and human assistance....my senior dog has advanced heart disease and is a first class picky eater. His cardiologist nor our vet could advise me on a brand of food that would work...they were focused on the medicine part. I resorted to googling and self-researching a homemade diet until I caught a break on my birthday when I stopped into Dogs & Cats Rule in Doylestown. A gentleman named Vince listened to me, showed me multiple options and even took the time to call the manufacturers for me to check sodium content. I cannot recall a time when I received such caring customer service, and the best part is his advice worked. My pup scarfs down his food and a huge element of stress has been removed from my life as a result. I have had mainly positive experiences here. I am happy to have a range of healthy foods for my cats--the other big pet stores sell so much crap. My only critiques are that it is small and cramped, and sometimes I have to wait in line for a while. But it's worth it for the healthy food offerings. Also, once I had to take back food that was due to expire within the month. Hopefully they'll be more careful about that, but they did refund me without issue. read more

Today was my first time ever shopping at dogs & cats rule, and I was So happy I stopped in! (I was actually on my way to Petsmart ) Maya helped me with absolutely everything I needed! I have a dog who is terrified of storms/fireworks and she suggested a product and it worked amazing! I've been looking everywhere for something to help calm him and nothing has helped, except what Maya suggested today! She was so helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable! She explained their rewards program to me, which is great as well. Overall I was very pleased with my experience. I will definitely be returning! read more

Had an issue with an item that I purchased. It was a dog toy that stopped making the noises it was supposed to make after only 2 days. I called and spoke to a girl who told me that toys are not returnable and that I should go buy a new battery for it. I told her that I understood the policy, however, the toy didn't even work for a full 3 days and that the special battery for it costs almost as much as the toy. She said she would have to address the issue with the store manager and call me back. She said that it probably didn't work because the tab was removed prior to purchase. Isn't that a store issue? I was called back and told that I could have a store credit. I asked for her name and told her I would be in the following weekend. When I arrived yesterday and started to tell the girl at the register what I was told and who told it to me, she proceeded to tell me with a horrible attitude that nobody by that name works there. I showed her the receipt and that I had written the name down and the words "store credit." She was extremely rude telling me again that nobody works there with that name. When I asked, "How would I have that name if the girl I spoke to didn't tell it to me?" She shrugged her shoulders at me. I went and picked out new items and when I went back to the register she told me she had the return pulled up and told me what I owed for my new purchases. She put my new items in a brown bag and practically threw it at me so nastily. Then she said even more nastily, "Are you going to leave the ball here?" I gave it to her and left. Honestly, I meant to give it to her immediately when I went to the counter, but, her ignorance overwhelmed me and I forgot. I should have confronted her on the spot for her nasty attitude during my entire visit as well as her unprofessional demeanor. I didn't want to stay and make a scene with others shoppers in the store. Maybe this store needs to work with their employees, ESPECIALLY this girl, on appropriate customer service. What a disgrace to have someone represent them in this manner! I told some friends who live in the area and they said that they have experienced customer service issues as well and shop there ONLY because of the convenience since Pet Value closed. read more

I really enjoyed this store! Very helpful employee, and healthy options for pets! The employee helped us find a cat food that might actually help my cat lose weight and answered all of my annoying questions politely and completely. At time of checkout, he told me that the store policy was if my pet didn't like the food, that I could return the opened bag as long as it was still half full, for exchange of something else. My only complaint would be that the store definitely caters more to dogs than cats. Only one section for cats. Still, awesome find. read more

I have gone here a few times to find a specialty dog food that is hard to find. I was pleased with the service the first couple of times, but I found the sales people to be a little condescending, both to me and other customers. They seem to get very rude once you express a desire to buy anything except their most expensive brands. They were rude to me when I asked about cheap cat treats, but then became nicer once I picked up my expensive dog food. One of the sales people even made disparaging remarks about veterinarians, saying they only care about money and that is why they prescribe certain foods. I'm a veterinarian and was disappointed to see a pet food store trying to create a divide between pet owners and veterinarians just to make money. I would love to see a pet store that works with veterinarians rather than resorting to false statements in the name of greed. read more

I was looking for a specific gentle leader for my dog that no one else had. When I got to the store they had it (!) in the size I needed (!!) BUT the package was also supposed to come with a matching leash. I told the cashiers that the leash was missing but I still wanted to buy it because it was the gentle leader that I really wanted. I asked if maybe they could give it to be for a discount (it was listed for $26.99). They said they'd have to call the owners and ask them. I waited there for 5 minutes while one of the girls chatted with the owners about what to do. To keep myself busy, I entertained myself by reading all the nasty notices posted by the owners to the staff behind the counter in giant red marker stating they were all going to get "written up". There were several of these in giant lettering in full view of the customers. Finally the girl returned with a cheap looking skinny leash in her hand and said since the leash in the package was probably stollen they will replace it with this leash - a leash appropriate for walking a 10 lb dog, not my 75 lb lab. Or, she said, since the crappy leash cost $5 I could take $5 off the $26.99. I took the $5 off but I felt like they were making me make up for the face that their product was stollen. I hate the fact that I just didn't say "forget it" and walk out but I seriously couldn't not fing this thing anywhere - not even online. Damn you Dogs and Cats Rule! You will never see me again in your store! read more

I have enjoyed shopping at the Newtown store. It is well stocked with many healthy pet food options. I'd like to give a shout-out to the staff who are knowledgeable and caring. Whether it be food or supplement, they have been so helpful finding the right products for my old sick kitty. I find myself going no where else. You'll never find this level of service and caring at a big box store. This store is family owned and operated. read more

I bought a product there that was tainted. Both my dogs became very sick almost immediately after eating it. I brought it back and reported it to the manager. They didn't care about my dogs getting sick and they didn't care to remove the product from the shelf so other dogs would be spared. read more

In late May 2012, I purchased a Busy Buddy food dispensing jug for my dog from "Dogs & Cats Rule" in Newtown, PA. When I purchased the jug, I explained to the clerk that I was unsure if the dog kibble would fit between the rope and the area of the jug that dispensed the food. The clerk told me that it would not be a problem to return the jug as long as I had my receipt. Kimble was placed in the jug and was too big. When returned to "Dogs & Cats Rule" in Newtown to exchange the jug with the receipt in hand, I received a non-customer friendly response. The employee first told me that toys cannot be returned. The item was not a toy nor was this policy listed on the receipt or in the store. The employee then told me that the item was used. The item had been used only to see if kibble could be removed from it. The employee shrugged her shoulders. I explained that I had purchased multiple items from the store and only wanted to exchange it for a larger size. Again, she did not care. I further explained that I preferred to shop at local stores than chain stores but could have gotten the item at a better price at a chain store such as PetSmart. The employee continued to shrug her shoulders like "oh well". I was very disappointed in the non-customer friendly response that I received from "Dogs & Cats Rule" in Newtown, PA. I will not be purchasing any items from this store or their stores in Newtown (PA), Princeton (NJ), or Pennington (NJ) and wanted to share my negative experience with other dog and cat owners. read more

I purchased 2 large bags of premium cat food in June 2013 and just found out it has been recalled. I contacted Dogs and Cats rule to see if it could be exchanged and they said no. I am on my own on this. I should contact the manufacturer. I have purchased cat food from this retailer for a least 5 years and cannot believe they refuse to exchange recalled merchandise.
