With the caveat of needing more blues acts than any other type of music, it is a fun event and you can't beat the location.

I have been to the Doheny Blues Festival several years and every year I have enjoyed it completely! It's basically just a chill day/weekend to sit on a chair, lay on a blanket or walk around. There are 2 stages of music, food booths, vendor booths and a great view of the beach and surrounding Dana Point. Seems the weather has always cooperated each year that I've attended (and if it didn't, I enjoyed the day so much that I've forgotten!) I love that you've got an event card to just keep on yourself and so not worry about money. Parking is awful if you come late, thank goodness for taxis ($5/person to drop you off closer to the main entrance... and $5/person to drop you off at your car door). A few years I've stayed at a motel/hotel during the event... THAT is the way to do it! Whether headliners are big names or not, the music never fails. Because of this festival I've become fans of some musicians and bands that I may never have heard of otherwise. Blues is amazing when heard live!! I'll always go back the the Blues Festival... made great friends, heard great music and had a great time every time! CHEERS!!! read more

Setup is cool and it has so much potential, but they really ruin it with two things: 1. There is almost no place you are allowed to stand or dance. The entire viewing area for the main stage is chairs. I'd say 1% of the viewing area is a place you can stand (far right side up against a fence!) 2. To purchase food or drinks, you have to go to a special tent and buy and Event Card and load money on it. Then if you don't use it, go back to the tent and get a refund. It's like they had a meeting to see who could come up with the least efficient or most annoying way to pay for it, and then they decided to use it for their festival. 3 & 3/4 STARS. The Doheny Blues Festival May 2019 @ Sea Terrace Park In Dana Point CA. Goldstar had Discount Tickets for this event. This place is such a great spot to have concerts on the Grass. Last year they had a lot more Big Name Acts compared to this year. We went on Saturday & the 2 Biggest acts were The Allman Betts Band, & Ben Harper & Innocent Criminals who were good. They have a Park & Ride for $5 & they shuttle you to the venue. You can bring in blankets &/or portable low chairs. They set up Food Booths & Merchandise Booths & you have to purchase an Event Card with Cash or Credit Card. If you don't use the whole thing you can get a Refund. The Croc Head with the Fries was a hysterical picture. I hope next year they can book some more top bands like they did last year. This is a Fun place to see a concert. It used to be, you had to have mega bucks & be really rich to have the Good Life, not anymore. The Game has changed. You've been Upgraded. Now You Can Live Like a King on a Limited Budget! read more

This years linup was outstanding. I will never attend again because of their method of paying for food and drink. You must take cash or credit card and put money into their card and then use that card to pay for food or drink! What a pain in the ass! Now 2 lines to wait in. Really? Stand in line to put $100 into the event card and hope you use all that money up. Or go and decide what you want to buy then add that up and buy a card for that amount. Forget it! You have no way of just impulse buying a damn bag of kettle corn or a taco. Some idiot came up with this plan to totally piss me off! I say screw this stupid plan. I saved lots of $$ read more

Note, this is a review based on my experience as a volunteer at this event. As far as the festival goes now, to volunteer at the event, you can sign up with a $15 fee. This allows you to volunteer a shift at the festival with admission into the day's performances that evening (with one day admission being $75 this year). It gets you a volunteer souvenir T-shirt, a voucher for a free meal plus a shuttle ride over from the designated parking lot. I love Chris Isaak and ended up volunteering on the day he was performing that evening, so i could see him live. As first timers, we ended up saying, we would volunteer wherever they needed help the most. This happened to be in a beer tent. We met the vendor who taught us about the beers he had on tap in the tent and learned had to correctly pour beer from the taps (which is not as easy as it looks -- hence my decision to not do this job) and how to accept payment for beers at the booth, which was my job. We served three types of beers in the tent in a regular and large size. We had Coors Light, Blue Moon and Saint Archer available with Coors Light being the cheapest pour of the three. The event booths do not take cash, which I am a big fan of. You purchase an event card that you load up with $$ which is usable at all the food and beverage booths plus merchandise vendor booths. It makes lines move much faster as change isn't having to be made. There were a lot of great food and drink vendors in the food court area. I really enjoyed my pulled pork mac and cheese lunch from the BBQ vendor I went to and my delicious blueberry lemonade from another vendor on this hot day. (As a volunteer, we are not allowed to imbibe alcohol until after our volunteer shift). I do have to say this event lets in A LOT of people. I had fun meeting different patrons in the beer tent while serving them beer. A lot of attendees had told me that they had come every year since the Blues Festival inception which was 20 years ago! The group of people we worked with in our booth were really nice and easy to work with during our shift. Since VIP patrons were in at 9:30 a.m., people staked out their spots for the evening's performances early. Hence, we our shift ended, our position on the lawn for the performance wasn't the best. Next time, I will bring my chair and towels and stake out my place before my shift. Since the bulk of the performers are blues artists, the crowd is pretty mixed. Chris Isaak catered his performance to this festival, so his set was a bit different than normal. I have seen him live many times, so I wasn't disappointed but many of his main hits were not really the focus here. Melissa Ethridge played later that evening, but we were so wiped out from being on our feet the entire shift in a shaded tent but still in sun on blacktop slinging beer, that we got on the shuttle to get back to our car before she performed. I had a great time. I know others have different opinions based on full price paying customers, some being VIP and paying quite a bit for a two day VIP pass, one day VIP pass, etc., and I get it. It was very, very packed with people this year. I do have to say I would volunteer again in the future as I had a fun time at the festival. read more

Just got home from Doheny, a little hung over and sore, sore legs from all the dancing! This was only our 3rd year attending, (people we meet have been coming for the whole 19 years!). An awesome time as usual. We stay in the local hotels surrounding the venue. I can't imagine having to drive in both days:/ in a perfect world we would be able to bring our rig and camp, but we've only managed it once; the campground Is full in like 30 seconds after the sites are released! I personally wouldn't bring small kids to this event, it's super loud and hot and I would think, a long grueling day for little ones. Be ready to smell pot all day long and see lots of intoxication! Music events tends to bring the vice out in people . The bands were great and thank goodness it was only 66 degrees (joke) because we got a lot of color out there!!! We usually go VIP but went Gold this year and will do so anytime we come back! It's so worth it. Some of our faves were Kenny Wayne Shepard,James Hunter 6, Walter Trout, Aaron Neville, and of course, Skynyrd and Brian Setzer. Chill crowd, great venue and music all day long. What's not to love?! Already planning for next year and I haven't unpacked my bags yet.;) read more

We were lucky the rain stopped in time for the Festival. The Gold Badge was fun, I really enjoyed the backstage area. Drinks were plenty and great. Food was lousy though. It's goin'' down, goin' down, down, down down down down. Got my big feet in the hot sun, and my fat's just drippin' down.... My 4* review last year is takin' a big dive. The music was good, but not super hot. Glad to see the CA Honeydrops get a good reaction from the crowd. My biggest beef is the (lack of) crowd management. Seat and space-saving ran amok this year; there is little to no management of that. Why pay up for VIP and wait in line before 6am for gate-open of 10:15 when all the decent spots are long done gone? Why indeed? For a minute in the air-conditioned trailer bathroom? To save $1 on your beer? F-NO. What your VIP and long wait in line gets you is a badly obstructed view of the stage and a lobsterizing bake all day in the sun. Sound like a great time? Unh, huh. Oh, don't forget to hydrate - right - they took our right-sized water bottle away because we froze it (so the seal had to be opened. It was a solid chunk of ice when we came in). DH folks, get a brain and a grip - BOOZE DOES NOT FREEZE. At $2 a small bottle for water you can go sit on something rotating and spikey. The ONLY group worth lining up with at 6AM is GOLD. And the program isn't worth the Gold ticket price, sorry. No surprise. I won't be going back next year to try to deal with all the seat savers. DBF - you don't care, and I'm sure you'll have plenty of fresh meat to grill next year. But for how many more, who knows? read more

15th year for this festival. Great musical talent! That was the positive. Now for the rest. Over sold tickets. SUPER crowed. Parking lots all full, had to park 2 miles away and hike in. Trash cans all full. Wine $7 for 3 oz. Food insanely priced. People smoking all over the event. People drunk by 3pm. VIPs had the only decent view and situation, the rest of us got disrespected frequently. Crowds so big I couldn't see the stage from my place. Couldn't stay long enough to see Greg Allman because there was no shuttle to my car since lots were full. Had to leave early and miss the one thing I really wanted to enjoy. They want your money, not your enjoyment. I'm sure the event organizers made a fortune but I'm out about $140 and only had a few moments of fun. Will NEVER go again. read more

I'm afraid things change, hence my 1-star review, that for the performers. When you purchase vip, line up at 6am both days and watch massive amounts of "seat saving, and friend cutting" what's the point. We started at maybe 20 from the front and entered at 100 from the front. Meanwhile staffers looked on. You must buy a gold seat to have a chance of a good seat. The lineup this year wouldn't have been worth it. Also, shady areas this year were occupied by staffers selling credit for food purchases. This while the staffers had covered cabanas to work in. Really, the blatant and condoned line cutting was the last straw. I don't want to be miffed at a festival. I won't return until i see a change in policy. No seat saving in any line! read more

I had a fantastic time this weekend at the Doheny Blues Festival and thought the event was very well organized. What made it easy for me was staying at the Marriott Laguna Cliffs Resort and Spa because all I had to do was walk down the hill (I won't lie, the walk back up was much tougher). My favorite part of the event, besides the awesome music and weather, was the "Event Band" payment system. You load it up once and don't have to deal with cash the rest of the day. It made the lines go faster and made for much less stuff to worry about. We had VIP the first day and general admission the second. VIP is worth having to wait in no enterance line and getting front of the stage, I'd do that again for sure. My least favorite part of the event was having to talk to five people at the Marriott to get my all-electric BMW ActiveE charged. I was scolded numerous times for even wanting to stay there with an electric car...I was shocked. Who does that?? This is our first year at Doheny Blues Festval and I'm confused. The only "Bluse"music I heard was on the smaller Backporch stage which was awesome. People sat anywhere including the pathways. Security people were sparse and clueless. One security guy at the exit gate was spitting sunflower seeds in my direction as I asked for info..?? Don't understand why smoking (cigars,weed,cigarettes, e-cigs) was allowed everywhere? Drunk people staggering all over the place. The Geriatric Coachella!!!! ....only with real music (ohhhhh, sorry.... just kidding, but not really). Too much fun. If you haven't been. GOOOOO! Great food. Awesome lineup and AMAZING music, right on the beach! I watched a handful of amazing artists, but was here for Kid Ramos (you're the man, Kid! -- weird, right?)! Got a chance to catch my boy Tommy Harkenrider with the Memphis Kings along with Joe Bonamassa, all on the same ticket. Great seating, kind people (pretty much a mellow, older crowd who is there for the music)... I will definitely be there next year. At the end of the day, I walked onto the beach, jumped in the ocean in my skivvies and almost broke my neck. Overall, a huge success... I found a ton of booths selling sunscreen (though I packed mine lol) and was given bottled water (yummmm Evian!) by the rum vendors. I think they felt sorry for us... read more

They missed the mark on the new venue because their press release said... "The award-winning festival will be reimagined at its new seaside home, with more intimate stage areas, elevated food and beverage offerings, and involvement from many local businesses in the Dana Point community." We attended the DBF for the past 5 years. The Doheny Beach venue was pretty awesome. Last year was just so-so at the new park location. This year's venue was pitiful. Do not care for the layout of the new location. The location is OK but the layout is a giant pain. 20 min walk from Back Porch to Main stage. REALLY!! .bathrooms were a disguesting pig sty in only about 3 hours. Could not even get close to the Back Porch, the GD beer lines took up most of the space.The method of paying for food & drink is just fine. Its been done that way for a long time now. I like it! Bands were outstanding but the sound hit or miss on the main stage The venue was lacking. No more palm trees and beach. Middle stage sits next to the balconies on older apartment complex. The Back Porch stage crammed into a corner. No big screens on the main stage. GA seemed to be miles from the stage so it was hard to feel connected with the show. We walked in both days without being searched or being asked for a ticket and I overheard one of the security guys telling a guest that he'd smoked a bunch of weed before coming to work. Vendors were 2nd rate. The food was inconsistent. I noticed a worker eating a couple of dropped French friez at the burger front counter. And at one of the beer stands, the worker gave us credit for $22 on our "card" rather than charging us. Can't complain bout that one. Hahaha! Dont buy the gold pass! Gold passes are a total waste of money. Chances are you will never get to use your gold privileges. They advertise access to all sorts of things that never happen. Not all stages and acts allow you to meet anyone. You can stand up close in the "reserved" vip section but there is no attempt to limit that access to gold passes. Anybody can go there. We paid top dollar to see Anders Osborne. His show was great but the festival will charge you hundreds of dollars for perks you will never get. There is no point to paying the premium. Also, you have to buy prepaid credit cards to make simple purchases and that's a scam too. You will never realize the full value of what you pay in. I would swear to God they charged us extra for trying to return the unused portion. Love the music but the system is a joke. If you go...pay the minimum. read more

You can ignore the reviews from 2016 & before. I know because we have been attending for many years. It was a great event before this year. Unfortunately the event has changed dramatically. They sold out.What was once a wonderful local music festival has transformed into a commercial enterprise - an all about the $$ event complete with corporate sponsorships. I love the Doheny Blues Festival. Yes, it was different this year because of the venue change, but my group still had a great time. I went on Sunday and the music was fantastic! I hope they change the Back Porch stage so that more people can get up and close. Many of the bands I wanted to see played on that stage, but it was too small of an area and I couldn't see all that well. I also wish there was a way that the unused balance on the purchased cash cards could be redeemed online after the event instead of at the venue during the event. It's such a hassle to remember or to deal with standing in line at the end of a long day to get your money back. All-in-all, I am already looking forward to next year. read more

This music festival was absolutely terrible. I am giving this festival a one star simply out of respect for the amazing artists, who themselves must have been out of sorts about how lame the crowd was, and how terribly the concert was run. The legendary Buddy Guy even made some sniping comments about the crowd. This festival is terrible because the organizers block off the entire meadow in front of the main stage for rich, fat, old, tommy bahama wearing OC seniors in lawn chairs who show up at 6am and reserve 5X5 or 10X10 spaces for their lounge chairs and blankets. This creates a very scattered crowd and inefficient use of space, while the real dancers and loyal fans are left to pay $60 a day for barely anywhere to dance or enjoy the show in the very back and side far reaches of the venue. It makes no sense from a crowd organization standpoint, except to reward rich, fat, geriatrics with lounge chairs who have the ability to pay $200 a ticket. The artist loses out as well -- they want to see dancers and good energy from the crowd. Anyone who goes to a show or festival knows that the best crowds are the ones that interact peacefully, dance together an bring a good energy. This is very important for the performer as well (case in point: Buddy Guy ended his set 10 minutes early, and made numerous negative comments about he crowd). Instead, at this festival I saw several old folks come to blows with other old folks fighting over the fact that one guy's chair was on their blanket, or that they were too close to their blanket space! These old folks are seriously like kindergardeners. It was hilariously sad to see their tempers rage like 5 year olds over stupid shit -- totally losing sight of the fact that they should be enjoying awesome music in a great beach setting. Anyways, I think you get my point - the festival vibe is terrible. Even worse, the organizers and festival security promote this selfishness. I'm from NorCal, so maybe it's an OC thing? I hate to make it about that -- but I've never encountered such ridiculousness. I must say it detracted from my musical experience -- and I wasn't alone. Many normal people with concert-going experience felt exactly the same way. Bad vibes all around -- and until I hear the festival people have changed this format, I will never be back. Even then, I probably still won't be back unless there is a must-see artist. The beach and landscape are beautiful -- as is Orange County in general. Too bad the people are ugly. It left me dreading the day I get old (I'm 34 now). If you're young and funloving, and go to concerts regularly -- please for your own sake stay away from this terrible festival. As far as a "Blues Festival" the Doheny Blues Festival is by far the worst I have ever been to. I am not referring to the musicians or the music they played, all musicians were wonderful and we enjoyed all their music very much, however, we did not hear "Blues" to call this event a "Blues Festival". We went on Saturday expecting some wonderful "Blues" and by the end of the night the joke was, "when is anyone going to start playing "Blues". Doheney, I am sorry to say but either you don't know what "Blues" are or you should reconsider renaming your festival to "Doheny Music Festival". I was not expecting to hear Country, Rock and Roll, Latin Jazz, R&B, and even POP at a "Blues Festival". My friends and I were pretty disappointed this year, even more so than last year when they moved the event from Doheny State Beach. This year they cut the music stages from 3 down to 2 only, the third one being used for interviews. They also limited the VIP section to about two-thirds the size of last year. We went to purchase merchandise fairly early on the first day and the sizes of the shirts were mostly too small. That being said, we enjoyed the talent that was there. read more

What a disappointment. The method to pay for food or drinks didn't work. As a matter of fact, most times the vendor would tell us that there was no money on our card. If they scanned it a few more times they would then see that there really was money there. I wonder how much money patrons lost because of this?? We had general admission tickets which worked great last year. Unfortunately we left early into George Thorogood because security wouldn't let us stand anywhere. It seemed everywhere we went there was a security person telling us to move on. I actually asked where he would prefer we stand and he directed us to a hill next the the port a Johns. Disgusting and so far from the stage you couldn't see. I won't go into detail about the food other than to say it was as disappointing as the rest of the event. I have checked another item off my bucket list by attending my first DB festival this weekend. Overall, I enjoyed the event as it was fairly well run for the size of the event. The music was great as Susan Tedeschi, J.D. McPherson and Nick Moss stood out in my mind...Joe Bonamassa drew a big crowd and his performance was stellar as usual. The downside would be parking and crazy policy that you can carry water in but not out? Lastly, I found merchandise priced as expected but why would the same CD be $5 more at the artist signing booth versus the Blues CD booth next door. This is unexcusable even if artist is receiving the additional proceeds. The total cost of attending this event makes attending again an irrational decision unless the lineup would include a number of people I have not seen previously. read more

Had a blast...most of the "best" can be enjoyed at The Back Porch"...this was our 4th year...brought some friends who had never been before. The only complaint is the lack of handicap accessibility...which was horrible at best...the majority of this crowd is over 50 and we can't walk a mile after paying $5 for a bus ride?!? The VIP tickets are a waste of money and the event planners are ripping people off! The staff that runs the entry doesn't check wristbands and let's general admission enter with the VIP guests. So much for paying the extra money to get early entrance ahead of general admission. The folks organizing the Doheny Blues Festival really have their act together. The Artists are the best. The food is top shelf. access to the 3 stages is amazing. OMG! THIS SUCKED ON SO MANY LEVELS ! The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars is because of the performers I saw , oh sorry , HEARD ! They set this place up so that the only decent seats are available to their "Gold level " patrons ( My wife said that those tickets were going for about $200. each ) ,these " Newport Coast Douch bags " who really aren't there to appreciate the music took up the entire front of the stage area so that "regular folks" had to set way off to the side of the stage or way in the back . The security staff was more focused on keeping the "commoners " out of the "golden area" than they were trying to keep control of the "controlled substance " use (By the way people , The pot smoking was a JOKE ! Lets just legalize .) i respect and understand the $10.for a glass of beer as I have been to many music festivals that were ruined because of alcohol but not allowing in water bottles and then charging $3.25 for a SMALL bottle of water is criminal!!! The music was very good and eclectic the food was what you expect . The "crowd " was made up of every O.C. wing nut you can think of ;50 year old chicks actin like they are 15 , people who are there just to "party" and have absolutely no interest / respect for the music , People who wear earplugs at concerts (What is up with that !!!!!) , couples with small children ( look , I know you want to be "cool parents' but , this is loud music , those kids have tiny delicate ears , let them ruin their hearing in the future with music they will actually like !) . and finally , ALL YOU GUYS OVER 40, PIEASE!, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD KEEP YOUR SHIRTS ON !!!!!!! Having 2 stages going at same time is counter productive at best. Bonamassa (on the Doheny stage) competing with Kid Ramos (on the Back Porch a few hundred feet away) was very distracting. Joe is arguably (no argument as far as I am concerned) the greatest guitar player in history with the voice of an angel and songwriting abilities incredible, so given the shoddy treatment he was afforded will probably not be back (a giant loss for blues fans) they need to re-think their policy of having 2 bands play simultaneously. only way i would go back is if there is a band playing solo (such as was the case with the Sailor Jerry stage. I would like to see them raise the price (double or triple) to keep those people out who are not serious about listening and are only interested in hearing there own voices (drunk by 4pm types) ever notice that people who talk at concerts are those who have never (nor will ever) had anything to say at all at any time in their pathetic lifes - period!!!!!!!!! strange brew read more

We had a wonderful time @ the blues. Volunteered like we do every year worked the VIP beer booth was so fun meeting all the blues fans. Music was great Los Lonely Boys KICKED ASS. Of course it was Crowed and I didn't notice the drunks as the other yelp preson said lets just say everyone was enjoying there selfs I personally did not notice the smoking either and I hate cig smoke. To the whiner and his review; are you kidding?!?!? News alert buddy, plan your parking. We all can use a little exercise these days. Park your car, leave after you saw who you came to see, and enjoy a walk. Of course food and drinks are not going to be "cheap", have you been anywhere in the last 20 years? The weather was stunning, the vibe was fabulous and the music (all hail Greg and Joan) was worth every penny. Next year, pack a lunch and go the beach. You can listen all day for free, eat your PB&J and since smoking is not allowed at the beach, you can enjoy the smells of brauts, kettle korn and roasted corn, all of whichbare too expensive. Crowded, you bet, it is a sold out popular event.
