This is a great activity as a special treat for a parent/child or other combo activity. It's not cheap, but it's a lot of fun. Just don't expect the colors to be dark and lovely unless you put on as many coats as your told! read more

Definitely a place with fun for all ages ! I came in on what looks like a super busy Saturday, the staff was so accommodating sitting my family of four with no reservation. The prices are definitely affordable and the range of items is overwhelmingly amazing ! I'd love to say we had some kind of experience but wasn't given the chance. Website had special note saying they close at 5. My friend and i walked her little girl down to paint a dish but were turned away because it was 4 pm and "last seating" was at 3:30. We understand wanting to get out on time but please, we didn't need a lot of time for the girl to paint a dish. Really? Doin' Dishes is a creative, fun, hands on paint -your- own ceramics shop that you should not miss !! The staff is very friendly and helpful! The girl working helped me pick out a ceramic piece and gave me advice to texturize it ! definitely a good find, and will be returning in the the future! My daughter and I have been going to Doin' Dishes since we moved to the area, four years ago. It's kind of a go-to when we have free time and a surplus of creative energy. This place just doesn't do it for me. Some said this was great for a girls night but I think it's better for a "mom's night." It's very laid back and quiet and there are actually a decent amount of children and their parents or caretakers who come here. The selection of pieces to choose from varies from spoon rests to piggy banks to dishes and mugs, but they're expensive in my opinion. Nothing is really less than $14 or so and you pay $7 an hour for unlimited painting time, which all adds up. I paid $28 for a travel mug that I still can't pick up for another 3 days, which is the other caveat here. It takes 7 days, (YES, 7!!) to get your project back. So if you're not super close to Montclair, it's a pain in the ass to have to go back so many days later. As for the staff, the girl who was there when we were there was pissed at the world. She was so grumpy and made it seem like she was doing us a favor when she poured the paint or we asked her any sort of question. She also was eating when we got there to the point where she couldn't even greet us because her mouth was full. Between the expensive prices, lag time to get your project and the rude staff, I believe there are better choices to get creative in Montclair. read more

I've been to Doin' Dishes a few times in the last 10 years, and I really think it has gone downhill. I have great memories of coming here as a child and painting pottery with my mom or with friends. It has always been expensive, but most paint your own pottery places are, and this is right on Church St. The last time I came here was in the summer, and the service was terrible. The women working there were unhelpful and unfriendly. They made me and my mom feel uncomfortable asking questions or for supplies. When we were done, I realized that I was moving in 5 days and that the pieces might not be done by then. When we asked if they could be fired more quickly, the women were not understanding, and told us that they could not be done earlier. My mom ended up picking them up, and gave me my bowl when she visited in November. Within 2 weeks of having the bowl, it broke in half. Since it fell off the counter, I didn't think much of it, except that it was weird how easily it broke and how it perfectly broke in half. My mom told me yesterday that her mug dropped onto carpet and broke into a bunch of pieces. The quality of their pottery must be really low. I will not come back here again. read more

I have to agree with many reviewers before me. The idea of painting your pottery pieces is great and they do have a good selection of pieces to pick from. However, my biggest complain is the staff and service they provide... Argh..we came as a group of 4 ( 2 adults and 2 children ) and all picked our colors. They brought the paints all messed up with many colors missing - we had to reach over each other to get a color we wanted to use. When I asked if they had any technique books or samples of designs, we were sent to the wall to see the tiles. The girl I was asking questions didn't bother letting go of her phone while answering my questions. Apparently, she was too busy texting to attend to the customers. The staff is uninviting and does absolutely nothing to engage customers or even look interested in customers. I will def look for another place to paint pottery, but will scratch this place off my list. I left there $120 plus tips and wish I spent my money in a place where staff actually gives a hoot about customer service. Take your money and your time somewhere else! read more

Horrible customer service. I took my son (5) to paint few Christmas presents for the grandparents (spent a good amount of $). Went to pick it up and both presents were cracked. Being almost a week from Christmas, I was super upset. The first manager I spoke to (Kelsey) was very kind and understanding and even rushed me in with my son to paint them again, free of charge. It was more than an hour before they closed and after he was done painting the things they messed up, I asked if he could paint something else that I would pay for. The other worker there was incredibly rude and yelled at us. Saying that they closed soon (it was 5p, they close at 6p) and he couldn't paint. He's 5, it takes him less than 5 mins to paint something. So I questioned her, wrong thing to do, she got nasty telling me that they turn people away who walk in and want to paint an hour before closing. Um, ok, I get that, but your team messed up, I figured it wasn't a huge ask. I guess I was wrong. I'll go somewhere else from now on. A beyond horrible experience. Made a reservation for three and when we arrived were greeted with attitude and tone. It initially appeared that the employee was in a hurry to close and did not want to be bothered by helping us. We came to find out it was the manager on duty who was by the end of our experience, completely disrespectful and rude. She was obviously annoyed when we asked for her to explain the process of choosing pottery and painting, not to mention that there were no other guests in the store. After a third time of asking how to choose paint colors and receiving sighs and annoying tones we chose to leave. Will not be coming back to this business. Owner should consider training employees on patience and customer service. read more

Obsessed with this place. Im a first timer but I'll be back again for sure. Such a great place for a girls date. I went with two of my friends on a Saturday afternoon and we had such a good time. There's a variety of peices to choose from and I'd say that its reasonably priced. You pay 7$ by the hour but the clock only starts ticking when youve sat down with your piece, paint brush in hand (and the staff is super sweet and lenient about the time clock), plus the cost of the piece you choose. Prices vary depending on your choice but nothing is over 25$. They give you all the tools you need (stencils, sponges, brushes, ect) and unlimited paint color choices. They also have various already painted peices on display to induce inspiration. The downside? You can't take your peice home the very same day. You have to come back a week later to pick it up but they will hold it for you if you cant come exactly a week later and theyll hold themselves fully responsible for the peice up to 30 days. read more

Overall, we've been there 3 times (once with my adult girlfriends, once with a group of moms and children and once with only my daughter and I). I do like the place but I do agree with another reviewer that said that the people working there often seem to be impatient with the people coming in to paint. Also, the prices seem to add up a bit. the flat tiles start at $5 for a small one, but if you are getting a small piece like a mug or plate it's around $12 then $7 per hour... I'd go for the fun, not for the value (and if you're not a good painter...) Also, most people don't seem to think of this, but if you are planning on doing a plate or mug, come in with ideas, that way you aren't taking longer. They do have a frequent painter club, but were "out of" the cards for it when we were there. read more

I have been taking the kids painting pottery for their Christmas presents for their grandparents for over 5 years now, and have gone here for the last three. I will now be taking my business elsewhere starting next year. While I enjoyed the time with the kids I am disappointed in the management and level of customer service they provide. They were rude when we walked in a few min before our appointment time and we felt rushed the entire time we were painting. I also agree with another review that we the kids were lost. They have templates there for you to use, but they are tucked back in the corner so you have to ask or get up and search for them (which I am not even sure is OK). It is also a little pricey by the time you add up the sitting fees and the cost of the pieces. read more
