It's still ghostly with so much empty space: They don't even have a staffed ticket counter at the entrance anymore so it stands, vacant, as if awaiting its fate. Keep walking towards the escalators and to the right are ticket kiosks. The stand-alone scanner for your phone is at your feet, giving the experience a Radio-Shack DIY feel. You pay for concessions on the second floor then walk down a lonely hall to push buttons and dispense popcorn and drinks yourself. Finally, what you're there for: The IMAX theater. The sound is thunderous, nearly "sense-around" and the picture is large and crisp. It was the perfect venue to see The Odyssey. Ask a staff member to give you a sticker with a barcode before checking out at a lone parking kiosk by the escalators so parking will be only $10, a bargain.

He explained the specialness of 70mm IMAX (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=48&select=D0sCdmms65IJpTy8F24HYA) and that it was available in two Bay Area theaters (other in 408, but it might actually be in Dublin). Said friend already had tickets about ten days from when we discussed this as he bought them almost two weeks earlier. Checking with another friend who is a littler older than me about The Odyssey, we both related to the story, for myself after reading the book in high school. I searched online and the link led me to a famous movie ticket selling company that starts with an F (review to come). After searching for dates and times for the screenings of this format at this theater, I noticed that almost every date had available seats only in the 1st five rows of the theater. But one Monday a couple weeks after I did a search, I saw a map that seemed to show that there were a couple seats on the last row of the theater next to several disabled access seats. I clicked them and happily told my friend. Two weeks later, I liked that my QR code was the only thing needed to enter both the venue and that particular theater. We walked in about 15 minutes before the scheduled 'lights out' for previews. As I walked to the location based on the map where I bought the tickets, I noticed that the map was inaccurate. Instead of being at the furthest row from the screen, our seats were literally the closest. I was concerned about getting dizzy especially since the movie time is 2 hrs. 45 minutes. I was glad to say that there were no physical or visual issues from this though it was difficult to appreciate the movie when I had to slump to the furthest rear portion of the seat to scan the entire screen. No qualms with the theater as the seats filled by the time the movie started 25 minutes after the screening. A nice bonus was that the director added a preview trailer (appreciated in 70 MM IMAX) of a sequel (part 3) of a popular movie (Dune, for those who are fans) coming towards the end of the year. I am still a fan of this theater though I must admit that is was trying to enjoy this movie. Surprisingly, this was not an issue. If you're a movie fan, do try to catch The Odyssey before it leaves the 70mm format screen. Trust me.

I recognize all the familiar toys because in the olden days, there was Toys R US and you just go through the store, like a museum, admiring things you can't buy but want to buy. There's a fabulous collection of horses. Divert, the theater has slighted seats. Love sitting on the side with nobody in front blocking. Chairs are still comfortable. Cup holder. The sound system is not deafening. The newer theaters blast you with sound. You go away deaf. Wine and beer sold. Drinks galore. Women's restroom -There's always a line but kept clean. Close to japantown so when you finish there's so many places to eat.

However, $11 for a few hours or parking wasn't bad considering the ease of finding a space and proximity to the theater. It was nice to see security (SFPD) at the front door. The theater's facilities feel outdated compared to other venues out there. Its age is very apparent. The old, creaky cloth seats were a quite distracting when anyone around you moved a bit. The movie screen and sound system were fine though. Consessions - the popcorn was just OK. 1/2 of our large container was just crumbs. Perhaps they scooped from the bottom? The sugar-free ginger ale was empty at one of the self-serve soda machines. Despite all this, it was still good to be at the historic AMC Kabuki 8 theater which has been around for over 50-60 years. It'a always fun to be in Japantown San Francisco!

Amazing, gritty small independent movie theater. Inside is very different from modern theaters, there is a single aisle and 4 chairs per row. The seats are lower than normal and if you are sitting near the wall it's very hard to get out of you want to use the bathroom. The screen size is also much smaller, some people probably have TVs that are about the same size. I find it more intimate. There is a small concession serving popcorn with real butter, coffee, coffee, soda, and candy. The lobby is very small so you'll be waiting outside in a line until your show time. I saw a weird German animation here "Cathedral of New Emotion" and the new Slam Dunk movie when that came out, nice spot for a movie and then easily walkable to fun and food before or after.

I found the facilities to be quite inviting. It's basement level and feels sequestered from the outside world (as it should), like a hi-tech vault to showcase and preserve humanity's best culture for the post-apocalypse future. I mean, it looks like a spaceship inside. It's swank and modern. It's comfortable and well-equipped. I did hear a few complaints about the seats being too lean-y and lacking arm rests, but I found them soft and well-spaced, and the sound and projection were great. My stuff looked great on screen. It was the perfect size for a post-show Q&A- 143 seats holds a crowd but not an impersonal one. The hosts were incredibly gracious and caring about the show they were putting on. This place doesn't organize shows like amateurs (trust me, I've done those.) If you're thinking of seeing a show here, it's probably something you wouldn't see anywhere else, so you might not know how to judge it. Consider yourself in good hands. It will be curated with taste. There's tons of great options for eating and shmoozing afterward right across the street, in Japantown's mall full of sushi places. One of my co-attendees is well versed in quality sushi, and called the place we went to one of the best she had found in the city. Pick this theater and neighborhood for a great night out.

The Marina Theatre is a family-owned small neighborhood theater that we can bring our kids, friends and family to to see a film together. Hot popcorn smell! Well tiered rows so I'm not craning my neck around someone's head to see the picture. Watching the San Francisco International Film Festival films in Theater 1 was fun. The smaller theater (#2) is more intimate but no less enjoyable. When was the last time you went to see a film and (maybe) eat out at the great restaurants on Chestnut and neighboring streets before or after a screening? Do it!

At entry, a problematic guest in front of me apparently purchased the wrong tickets online. The worker/owner seemed to have no clue how to resolve the issue, and instead of letting the competent people inside, they decided to clog the line, arguing back and forth with the guest. The place is small, so once they scanned tickets, visitors were piled into the cozy sized lobby waiting till they opened the auditorum 15 minutes before the listed showtime. The classic concessions stand offered a fairly standard variety of menu items including hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, candy, ice cream bars, soda, as well as a range of hot tea options. There are two auditoriums, both located upstairs. The curved backs of the folding seats made them comfortable enough for a (less than) 2-hour event, with cupholders on the arm rests. "Right in the Eye" was such an incredible production, unique and entertaining. The delightful works of french filmmaker and magician, George Méliès, shown on the screen alongside an amazing live musical performance, made for a truly enjoyable experience. An awesome collection of quirky silent films and clips from more than a century ago, scenes filled with amusing special effects and a touch of humor. The lighting, sound, and diversity of instruments used (including the theremin, triangle, music box, and waterphone) were mesmerizing and executed beautifully. The setting at the Marina Theatre was just right for a lighthearted feel-good time.

The crowd was so silly and friendly, with everyone laughing along to the movie. It does get pretty cold after the sun sets; the veterans were very prepared with an assortment of puffer jackets, thick blankets, and their own lawn chairs. We brought our own snacks and drinks but there is also a ton of restaurants nearby as well as PROXY's own concession stand (I think they sold a bunch of drinks). Even more impressive, the staff behind PROXY were so kind and sweet, going above and beyond to introduce the movie and make everyone feel welcome. I'll definitely be back! Thank you PROXY!

It's a fun space…read morefor movie screenings and while it does get packed quite quickly (come early to snag a spot and bring chairs or blankets to sit on), it's a great easy activity to do on a nice day and they often screen movies that are not out yet on streaming! Location is great right in the center of Hayes so it's super easy to grab food from nearby. They also do have a simple bar selling canned beverages for a reasonable price which is a nice plus.

And in response to Xavier G.: Yes, sometimes the work that's shown can be hard to understand, but take it like a good concert. You get into the music and what happens? Your mind drifts around and does some pretty productive and lovely thinking, right? Sitting in the dark, watching non-narrative moving images can yield some beautiful thoughts. Develop your thinking. At their yearly Crossroads festival they have filmmakers in person and premier screenings of works from around the world. I love going to their screenings and seeing the original work of artists. There is nothing commercial or Hollywood here. All of the films are original statements of the artists visions and intriguing trips into their minds and obsessions-- spooky, dreamy, hypnotic and seductive--these films create emotional nuance and connection, and since the filmmakers are often there in person, you can connect with the artists and ask them questions about their films and creative process. So glad this type organization still exists in San Francisco.
