Amazing theater and experience, we're lucky to have one of the few true IMAX 70mm screens in the country and world here in the Bay Area. The theater is huge and has a lot of historic details and charm. The snack bar area is particularly beautiful with large windows overlooking the area. Their IMAX theater is massive and not like usual theaters. Be careful if going inside after a movie has started as it's extra dark and there's a lot of steps and railings. It can be confusing coming here for the first time. Take the elevator to the 3rd floor of the Metreon building. Unfortunately they do not have their own parking so you should park at the Fifth and Mission / Yerba Buena garage across the street. So an update is in order here as a friend convinced me to catch a movie while it is on a particular screen here. Why? He explained the specialness of 70mm IMAX (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=48&select=D0sCdmms65IJpTy8F24HYA) and that it was available in two Bay Area theaters (other in 408, but it might actually be in Dublin). Said friend already had tickets about ten days from when we discussed this as he bought them almost two weeks earlier. Checking with another friend who is a littler older than me about The Odyssey, we both related to the story, for myself after reading the book in high school. I searched online and the link led me to a famous movie ticket selling company that starts with an F (review to come). After searching for dates and times for the screenings of this format at this theater, I noticed that almost every date had available seats only in the 1st five rows of the theater. But one Monday a couple weeks after I did a search, I saw a map that seemed to show that there were a couple seats on the last row of the theater next to several disabled access seats. I clicked them and happily told my friend. Two weeks later, I liked that my QR code was the only thing needed to enter both the venue and that particular theater. We walked in about 15 minutes before the scheduled 'lights out' for previews. As I walked to the location based on the map where I bought the tickets, I noticed that the map was inaccurate. Instead of being at the furthest row from the screen, our seats were literally the closest. I was concerned about getting dizzy especially since the movie time is 2 hrs. 45 minutes. I was glad to say that there were no physical or visual issues from this though it was difficult to appreciate the movie when I had to slump to the furthest rear portion of the seat to scan the entire screen. No qualms with the theater as the seats filled by the time the movie started 25 minutes after the screening. A nice bonus was that the director added a preview trailer (appreciated in 70 MM IMAX) of a sequel (part 3) of a popular movie (Dune, for those who are fans) coming towards the end of the year. I am still a fan of this theater though I must admit that is was trying to enjoy this movie. Surprisingly, this was not an issue. If you're a movie fan, do try to catch The Odyssey before it leaves the 70mm format screen. Trust me. read more

One of the only theaters with 70mm screen. While the theater seats and bathrooms are well maintained, there's not much to do after a movie is over in the area. The common area only sells food and drinks - there's no games or whatnot to go to. I'd recommend going here after work downtown or if coming for a 70mm feature but if you're looking for activities to do after watching a movie, another theater may be your best bet read more

Took a day off to catch this flick because weekend tickets had been sold out for weeks. Only options were weekdays. No problem as this guy was willing to burn a PTO day to see this awesome film. We go to the movies very often, and the IMAX Metreon is our favorite. Our latest movie was the Odyssey, and WOW!! I never realized how awesome the Metreon IMAX was!! The biggest screen and with that 70mm film, we felt totally immersed! The ripples of every ocean wave, the violent tempest storms, the sceneries, every rock, .... Everything just popped out!! We are so lucky to have this IMAX that can show the 70mm films, I read there are only 40 or so in the whole country!! Oh, and the sounds!! I do not need to wear my hearing aids in this movie theater, lolz!! The lines for snacks could be very long depending on the movie. You are able to get tickets on the first floor and then head up to the third floor to order snacks or get tickets if you wanted to speak to a person to order tickets. I watched three movies here and there was never a line for anything. It's pretty clean and the seats are clean. A great pass time with most recent movies available. read more

Got some really expensive popcorn and expensive soda (though they have the modern Coca Cola soda dispenser where tu can mix and match flavors. It was Tuesday night so they have limited staff. This theater seriously needs more ushers, security or people to uphold etiquette. During my last few visits, there have almost always been people on their phone or talking during the movie. I shouldn't have to go up to them nor leave the theater to find someone who has more authority to do something. Once in a while, there is an occasional homeless person that somehow gets into an IMAX theater too. One time, a family with small children came into an R-rated movie. I knew they were clearly in the wrong theater when the dad pulled up their tickets on his phone on a very bright screen to find out where they needed to be while seated in the walkway too. They didn't finally leave until the characters in the movie started raining down F-bombs. When it comes to big screens, epic sound, and pretty comfortable seating, it doesn't get much better than The Metreon AMC. While there are a number of sizes, from the massive top 3 in the country IMAX, to the epic Dolby theater, to a handful of 150 capacity, and then some smaller rooms, every screen at The Metreon is worth the price of admission. The laser picture quality and sound are top notch across the board and every room is immersive in its own way. We are so fortunate to have such a big centrally located cinema to showcase the mega blockbuster films alongside some smaller, smaller released Indies. My only issue with this theater, aside from the high concession prices (which is chain-wide) is the placement of the many excellent Coca Cola Freestyle machines. It feels odd to have the food and drink options before you scan your entry and makes getting a soda or popcorn refill a little more tedious than necessary. read more

I visited AMC Metreon 16 on Saturday to watch Nuremberg, and once again it reminded me why this is one of my favorite theaters in San Francisco. This was my second time here -- the first being when I watched Godzilla Minus One -- and the experience was just as good. The theater is very clean and spacious, without that overcrowded feeling some movie theaters have. There are always staff walking around sweeping and keeping things tidy. They also have security present, which makes the whole place feel safe and well-managed. I grabbed a hot dog, some popcorn, and a soda before the show -- everything was fresh, hot, and exactly what you expect from a good movie snack lineup. Inside the auditorium, the recliner seats are extremely comfortable. You can lean back, lift your feet, and really settle in. The screen quality is excellent, with bright colors, sharp visuals, and powerful sound that fills the room without being overwhelming. Even when other people are in the theater, you barely hear anything except the movie itself -- no disturbances, no distractions. Ticket prices are reasonable: about $15.95 for the second showing of the day. If you go earlier, it's even cheaper. The self-serve kiosks at the entrance make buying tickets and choosing seats very easy. Overall, AMC Metreon 16 is a great spot for movie fans. Clean, comfortable, safe, and high-quality from start to finish. I'll definitely be back again for future films. Two thumbs up from me. read more

The Metreon Center is general is a little dead but it's convenient if you live in the city and has the typical concessions. I'm writing regarding our IMAX 70mm screening of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey at AMC Metreon 16 in San Francisco today. We specifically chose the Metreon because it is one of the relatively few theaters capable of presenting films in true IMAX 70mm. We drove approximately 50 minutes into San Francisco specifically to experience the movie in this format and paid the premium IMAX ticket price expecting an exceptional experience. Unfortunately, we purchased seats in Row B, and the experience was horrible. Given the enormous size of the IMAX screen and how close Row B is to it, the viewing angle was so extreme that we had to look sharply upward throughout the movie. Adding insult to injury, the seats do not recline, making an already extreme viewing position even more uncomfortable. From Row B, it was virtually impossible to comfortably take in the entire image. The lower portion of the screen--approximately 15%--was effectively outside our comfortable field of view. We constantly had to move our heads and eyes around the enormous screen simply to follow the movie. This raises a basic question: How can AMC sell the "IMAX experience" at a premium price when customers in these seats cannot reasonably experience the entire IMAX screen? AMC promotes IMAX as a premium moviegoing experience, and the Metreon is particularly well known for its extraordinary IMAX 70mm presentation. That reputation is precisely why we made a 50-minute drive into the city to see The Odyssey there rather than at a theater closer to home. Had there been a prominent warning explaining just how severely compromised the viewing experience is from Row B, we never would have purchased these seats. I find it very difficult to understand why seats with such an extreme viewing angle are sold at the same premium price without such a warning. Instead of leaving impressed by what should have been an extraordinary IMAX 70mm experience, we left feeling that we had been ripped off. read more

We got tickets to stranger things grand finale. I was actually excited to come here because it's an AMC and naturally they used to live up to the hype. However our experience was absolutely awful. The customer service here is a joke. We waited in line for about 20-25 minutes. When we got to the front the worker seemed in a hurry to get us out. Which I get since the line was long. However I didn't expect the disrespect that came from this worker. I wish I had the time to complain to a manager but unfortunately we were in a rush to get to the actual movie since parking is a nightmare here. When we got to the front, we had a worker who kept asking us if we wanted anything else with attitude. After we were trying to figure out what we wanted. I originally asked for the sweet ropes. She said they didn't have any. So naturally I proceeded to ask her what kind of candy they had. She then rolled her eyes and proceeded to tell me that I could look at the wall to the right. THE WALL? There was a wall behind her that didn't say any candy names. There was also no wall to her right... where the candy was at. The candy was on the far right side and quite frankly you could hardly see it. Another worker even stared at her and came to explain what candies they had. By the time she tried to explain I told her to give me trolli sour crawls. The girl then asked us if we wanted anything else again rolling her eyes. When I tell you I was shocked. I was shocked. This establishment needs to train their workers better. I don't understand how any worker think it's okay to talk to ANYONE like this especially a customer. Quite frankly based on this experience this AMC lost a customer. I refuse to go back. Also the popcorn here was stale, which was a nice end to the night. Would advise against coming here, popcorn isn't good, seats don't move all the way back and the service is awful. Not to mention parking is a nightmare. read more

Watched Sinners 70 mm for the first time; while, having watched Sinners the film for the third time. Thank you AMC Metreon for being one of the few theaters to showcase the movie in 70mm, for I was not aware of its existence the first weekend I watched it. Glad this is not my regular theater since there's no recline or seat warmer. But I was there to completely analyze the movie in its originally intended medium, so I didn't mind! The reason for my review today is because I did not enjoy the distance I sat. I sat F26, which was a bit too close to the screen. I don't know why I figured F26 was a good distance. When I initially ordered my ticket, rows on rows were already filled. I thought my seat was a great deal, but my retrospection wishes I picked a further one. Maybe Row I would have been perfect. Came to watch a new movie in IMAX. The movie theater is easy to find an access. It was busy as it was a movie premiere night. When you arrive on the movie theater level, you can buy food and drinks on the left side. Ticket check is found on the right side and they will direct you to your theater once checked. I don't often watch movies in IMAX but wow, what an incredible screen! The quality of the movie projection, and the audio was really top-notch. However, I will say the seats felt a bit outdated, especially when you're paying for IMAX. They looked and felt old, and became quite uncomfortable about halfway into the movie. I have been coming to this theatre for movies for many years though, it has been awhile. I remember I would always get their chicken tenders with curly fries. Their prices have steadily increase for the meal but for years it was the most delicious thing they offered at the concession stand! I came back to get their chicken tenders with waffles fries (no longer curly fries, sadly). It did not live up to what it used to be almost a decade ago. Both the chicken and waffles fries were dry. Many pieces of the fries were overly crispy, hardened to the point of burnt. Not worth the $20 price tag anymore. I remember the theatre being clean, large, with nice views of Yerba Buena. Great place to watch a movie, take a stroll at the gardens with many eateries nearby! read more

Then I went to get a adult beverage. And I had to tell the young kid I to properly pour a draft beer. I dont like this AMC at all because it's ran by kids to don't know what they are doing. The theater seats have seen better days. They still recline though so it makes the movie experience a bit better. They still offer 1 free refill on popcorn if you order a large. They will give you a bucket of popcorn and a box which you can ask to refill now or later. I like to bring a super jumbo ziplock bag to take home leftovers. It's basically a 2 for 1 deal since between my partner and I, we can only finish 1. Their online pick up area isn't really monitored, you could basically take anyone's order.... Went to Metreon to watch Avatar Fire and Ash. Great movie and I think it is my favorite Avatar movie of the trilogy so far. There were 9 of us total so two cars. Parked at 5th and Mission garage across the street. Used to be cheap but you know everything costs more these days. $19 or so for 3 hours? Something like that but convenient for sure. Ground floor of the building there is a food court which shows the current status of SF unfortunately. A handful of restaurants with equally as many shuttered kitchens. Anyway you can grab a bite before going in to see your movie. We prepaid our tickets via my daughters AMC app account so no line to queue but it really was not busy We chose not to see IMAX and went for standard theater with fully reclining seats. SO COMFY!!! Makes movie viewing so relaxing. Other theaters don't fully recline leaving you head too upright and sore after a couple hours. Each seat has its own cup holder too. Spacious theater lobby and concession areas. read more

We came here to see Tron Aeries and it was in the supposed Imax theater. It was just so unimpressive I can't really say anything too great about it. The screen wasn't "that big" and the seating wasn't that comfortable. For all the features they have in theaters these days (the recliners, the spacious seats and aisles, heated seats), it just seemed like this theater was from back in the early 2000s and for the price of a ticket is kind of unbelievable. Especially since you also have to pay for parking! We came from the East Bay to watch a movie with our friend, and it just doesn't make any sense for us to come that long of a way to pay extra for what seems like a whole lot less. I will take my advanced theaters and seating with free parking in the East Bay Area, thank you!! read more

Came here to watch the new F1 IMAX movie, and wow, what an experience! I haven't been in an actual IMAX theater in over a decade, and this location truly delivered. Unlike some places that advertise IMAX but don't have the real deal, AMC Metreon has a true IMAX screen. Massive, probably twice the size (or more) of your average movie screen. The theater itself is huge and impressive. We sat in Row D, which was a bit too close for such a large screen. Next time I'd go a few rows back at least for a better viewing angle. The seats are plush rocker chairs, which were comfortable, though I do wish they had full recliners like you find in some other newer theaters. Concessions were good but pricey. Popcorn here is definitely more expensive than Cinemark. That said, if you're an AMC Insider or A List member, you can score a free large popcorn and fountain drink upgrade, which is a nice perk. I also liked that you can control how much butter you want. They've got self serve butter and seasoning. Bonus points for the wide selection of ICEE flavors. The biggest downside is the parking. It's either garage or street parking, and I'm not sure if they offer validation. IMAX tickets were $28. Kind of pricey but worth it if it's a great movie. Bonus tip: Costco currently sells an AMC gift card of $20 and two black tickets for $40 total. Pretty good deal! Basically were able to get these tickets for $20. read more

I love this theater because I love IMAX most appointed they have great Security there so I'm gonna bring your family. They're doing a great job of having great Security there for everyone. It is a place where you need to. You know eat before you come cause they don't have a lot of options except for junk food, but definitely a place where you can have fun in the IMAX. I just got done watching Mortal Kombat and it was epic in the IMAX. It wouldn't like to see it any other other place definitely highly recommend recommended and they have great customer service there so get down to the movies this year go San Francisco. read more

This theater could really improve... our first time watching IMAX for the early screening Crunchyroll of Demon Slayer Infinity Castle. 9/9/2025. Second time in this cinema. As we walked inside the auditorium 16 we are amazed by how big the screen was. We got Row L seats (specifically L13 and L14) and they are eye level to the screen. No straining to the neck. Huge picture and impressive sound. But I have to complain that stairs did not include letters and people have to shout their row so people can find their right seats, and I thought that was pretty helpful. The seats were run down and some ripped... before coming, I was so hyped about this theater being the second largest true IMAX in the country second to Lincoln in NY. I hope they can improve chairs and especially finding your Row seats! so disappointing but it's worth the price, we loved the movie. read more
