We got a car ''Full-Size Car'' at Tampa Airport. We were on the way to Miami Intl airport but suddenly in the middle of the road the engine shut down and we almost got hit and crashed by other cars. I had to pull over the car off of the highway. We were trying to contact Dollar but the line was busy. I had to call an Uber and sent my friend from Ft Myers to Miami Intl with a cost of 200 USD. Once we finally spoked to a Dollar representative, he told us the assistance would be there the next 4 hours therefore he suggested to move the car to a nearest Dollar office. I drove the car at 10mph for 45 minutes to Dollar office at Punta Gorda airport, I told them what was happening and they gave me a different car..however when I arrived to Miami Airport next day because I lost my flight the previous day, they added more than 200 USD to my invoice because I have requested a ''Car Exchange'' and more bucks more because I ''return'' the car in different location twice. Basiclly, they are telling me I return the car because I wanted not because their car was damaged. I'm doing a claim, with all the evidence. But until now I can't believe how a company can act like that with a customer. The manager in Miami had the worst attitude I've never seen. I booked a car rental through Priceline for over $130. My flight itinerary was changed by my airline, so I called Dollar to confirm that my reservation would be not be cancelled due to my tardiness. I was told I had to contact Priceline, but that everything should be fine. Priceline wouldn't do anything but assured me similarly, and that, on the day of, if I couldn't get a car, to contact them back. Upon arriving to my destination, I waiting two hours in line to finally reach a severely understaffed Dollar counter. I finished my reservation and got my receipt, but when I went outside to the rental lot, they HAD NO CARS available and that we have to wait ANOTHER one to three hours. Unacceptable! I walked away from the line and called an Uber, and got to where I needed to go for $40. (Wish I'd thought of this sooner.) The next morning, I call Priceline to see if they could get me a refund, and they tell me that because I never used the vehicle, I should be able to get a full refund. Two days later, Priceline sends me an email that because I apparently "used my reservation" (I was never issued nor used a vehicle), they could not issue me a refund. Unacceptable. Terrible experience !!!!! This company will charge you for any simple change you want to make and the customer service is terrible! I tried to change my reservation drop off from Louisville Kentucky to Chicago Illinois and they wanted to charge me over $1000 more, even though I would've rented the car for more days from them, and they would've already made money. Then when I tried to change the drop off location to Atlanta, Georgia, which was closer, they still wanted to charge me more money. Also, I had a flat tire and I was driving one of their cars and they wanted to charge me for that, even though the flat tire simply happened when I was changing lanes, and did not hit anything in the road. Just a warning to anyone considering renting from this company - DO NOT DO IT! I was moving cross country from NYC to Illinois due to losing all of my work because of COVID, but the only car rental available that week was from Dollar Car Rental. So I used this company despite seeing the other tragically awful reviews. The first car I received was broken (not accelerating and making clanking noises), so I called customer service. They gave me an address in NJ where I could exchange the car. I arrived and there was no rental place at that address. I tried to call customer service back and was put on hold for an extremely long time never getting through to anyone. I googled the address and could not even locate the rental place in the town they sent me to, so I called other locations in the state. They informed me that that rental location had moved recently, but they could not find the new address for me. So I asked them to help me get a car at another location on my route. I arrived at a Hertz location I was sent to and was given a downgraded car with an empty tank of gas. The next day, Dollar Car sent me late charges (I was only late due to the issues they caused me) and the pre-paid fuel charges although I was not give a car with gas. They also did not adjust my rental costs due to the downgraded car I was given like they had promised would automatically be taken care of. I called Dollar Car and got some of the worst customer service I have ever received, but finally got through to a supervisor who said he issued me a full refund for the extra charges and told me to call Priceline to pursue a refund for the rental charges. Fast forward to SIX CALLS AND THREE EMAILS/CHATS LATER, I only received a partial refund for the extra charges and no other credits for the downgraded car or overall horrible service. Priceline and Dollar customer service agents both told me they would issue full refunds for the charges and the rental, but would not put that in writing like I requested and never honored their claims. They also charge a RIDICULOUS amount of service charges for tolls. I have rented many cars over the years, but will forever warn anyone looking to rent from any Hertz owned companies. Do not use this company. They have very poor communication skills and give false promises. I rented a car Cincinnati to Charlotte. I changed my drop off location, which was still In Charlotte, and was charged an extra $50 fee. When changing the drop off location I was assured that since it was in the same city I would not be charged. In addition, I dropped the car off 21 mins into my hour window to to drop off. It was dropped at at 12:21 when drop off was at 12. I was not charged an extra hour late fee but was charged an extra day of insurance totaling my insurance for $68 instead of $33. Customer service was very unhelpful and does not have any claims of me speaking to anyone The only positive from this was the manager taking the time speak with me and figure out the problem although she couldn't resolve it All in all, don't use this company. The Dollar representative told us we have three options to pay the Toll fees in Boston. Pay the $62 unlimited pass fee, pay a per toll fee (including a $10 admin fee for every toll) or avoid tolls altogether by avoiding highways. She said the tolls would not accept cash. We paid the $62. We drove through 4 tolls, all of them accepted cash. Would have cost us $12 cash. It seemed like she lied to us so she could sell us the pass. It makes me wonder if they get a commission to sell the passes. Also got a hard sell to buy the insurance. We declined. She said that if we were in an accident and the car was unable to rent, we would have to pay the company for lost revenue??? I have not crashed the car yet but I will keep you updated. We were also told we would have to pay an extra $12 a day to add another driver. We booked through AAA which allows you to avoid the fees. I have nothing but praise after the terrific car rental experience I had recently with Dollar Rent A Car. I hesitated a bit after reading some of the bad reviews here and on other travel sites, but I decided to give it a shot after realizing they were about half the price of Avis and Hertz! The counter rep who set up my car was helpful and courteous. Sure, they try to get you to purchase all the extra insurance and cost add-ons as that is their job and part of the pitch, but I never felt pressured and politely turned them down. I did get the Sun Pass feature to get through the tolls easily. It's worth it if driving on the highways a lot and jumping off exits. I made my reservation well in advance and had no problems with the estimated rate and car type. In fact, their cars are just as nice and new as the other companies I mentioned. I love that they also let you walk to the rows where your type car is and pick out the one you want. Plus, having the car rental desk right across the street from the garage here is a plus at the Orlando airport. When I dropped the car off it was quick and easy. Got my receipt and all was just as I had booked with no extra charges or hidden fees tacked on. What more can you ask for? Nice service, good cars, and rates that are way lower than the bigger name car rental companies here. read more

Also they had a different returning location but the returning location was ridiculously hard to find....A lady at the returning location was also not so helpful. There was no line for Dollar Rent A Car in the Orlando Airport but there were huge lines for the others. After the typical buy our insurance! explanation and our typical no we won't! Arriving at the parking garage that's just across the street (still on airport property) we were pointed to a line of cars to choose from... uh we reserved a SUV... after some confusion and double checking we were pointed to the right section. We got to choose which SUV we wanted which was nice, they had 2 to choose from. On my most recent trip I decided to utilize Dollar Rental again since I enjoyed using them last time do to Jairo's great service skills, but this time I used their VIP member system. It's free to sign up for and you just tell them what size car (mid size, full, etc) and what add ons (if any like sunpass, car seats, etc) and they have it waiting for you in the garage. Contract is hanging from your rearview and you just go! But if you don't like their pick, just grab a lot attendant and you can pick a new car! The car they picked for me was a 2014 red Nissan Altima (I know, redhead in a red car equals trouble!). It was a push button start with all updated upgrades (controls on the steering wheel, the message board on your radio, etc.) And it was definitely detailed; the moment I opened the car, I smelled the perfumy scent and it hasn't gone away yet! So they definitely service their vehicles as well. So far they do have a higher amount held on my account which I'm sure is just to cover any extras. I have used several other car rental companies before and Dollar is by far the worst. I chose it because it was cheaper, but I will pay the extra money to get better customer service. I can say that agent at the Ontario Airport was nice and professional. My biggest complaint is that there are no local agents to speak to. I wanted to trade my car in, but I wanted to call the local rental place to make sure I could do it without any further charges. I could not do that. I called in to see what the cleaning fees were because my kids had spilled juice on on of the seats. Fortunately, my aunt had a solution that cleaned the seat right up. I was told that I would have to get the fees from the local place, but I could not speak to anyone until I dropped the car off because dollar has a central customer service that takes all the calls. I was told by the customer service rep at the central location that I had to clean the car before dropping it off. I planned to clean it, but a light vacuum should be free. I wanted to leave early and dropped the car off at another rental, which I was already dropping it off at another rental, I was going to be charged an extra $600 and have to pay another $250 for a deposit. We rented a car in Pensacola. There was one customer service rep, hence we had a long wait to get the car (not the CSRs fault). The main bridge was out, rerouting everyone through Gulf Breeze. ALL signs stated "NO TOLLS, KEEP MOVING", so we did, as we were understanding the toll wasn't applicable. Well, now we have $10 in tolls and over $100 in "administrative fees". I went to their website to book a car out of the Tampa Airport, and was surprised of the great rate of $15.20 per day! I noticed I didn't input my Dollar Express account, when I did, it dumped out my original information and required me to re-input my information, when I did, with my Express number, the rate changed to $71 a day, thinking this was a mistake, I tried it a second time, again the cheapest rental was $71. Although in large print on the confirmation it says "Cancel your rental car" below the reservation, when you try to click on the cancel button you are told they are non-cancellable. Yes, on page two of the confirmation it says, in much smaller print, that they are non-refundable, but I believe it is deceptive to show as cancelable and then later in a less conspicuous state the contrary, In the end I was charged a cancellation fee for Dollar rental car. I felt like we were deceived by Dollar. We rented a SUV in one state to return in another. We paid extra for this to happen. The folks behind the counter went over everything but the toll charges (admin fees). They knew we were going on toll roads but failed to mention that there will be $15 admin fee (up to $120) for every toll that we go though. That's exactly what I got billed for ($49 in tolls and $120 in fees). Yikes, I just smacked down $880 to rent a med SUV for a week and they have the audacity to bill me for this. When I called their 800 number to dispute the charges, the call center person told me that I should of read the whole document before accepting the vehicle. I totally agreed with her but my argument was that I just got off a long flight and was tired. That the receptionist went over everything else but the toll charges.......that I was hoping Dollar was looking out for their customer's and that I was in good professional hands. Not the case at all. I went on the internet and found others have been duped, scammed, deceived.......whatever you want to call it. I call it a scam. They did cut the charges in half to $60 (still a scam) for the 1st offense. I would of paid the toll insurance if I've known this up front. The toll roads I was on also did not accept cash. Don't trust this company. I booked online for Calgary Airport and received an email with a voucher, their email said "Payable at the counter: $0". I had already paid $220 for 7 days. When I arrived at the counter the attendant told me he would take a $200 insurance which would be returned to me. He did not mention any other fees. Sure enough the $200 was returned to me but 6 days later, they had taken another $226 from my credit card. They charged me $140 for winter tires (they gave me mud and snow tires) and other hidden fees. In the end it cost me $446 instead of the initial $220 advertised. I will never use this company again. My friend rented a car through hotwire. The total price was $440. When he picked up the car in Tampa, he was charged over $60 for taxes and fees. When he called Dollar Rental Car he was told they can't help local taxes and fees. My friend again read the "TOTAL PRICE" at the bottem of the booking. With no budging from the agent, my friend asked to speak to a supervisor. He was immediately put on hold. After a half hour he hung up. I suggested he dispute the charge through his credit card, but I'm not sure he will. If you think dollar is one of the reputable ones, it is not. Dollar Rent a Car is a RACKET - they TRICKED and DECEIVED me into an extra, huge charge AFTER I had paid as much as I could online, got a RECEIPT via email, and thought I only owed another ~$64 at the Dollar pick-up campus, as indicated by my receipt. I certainly never clicked on any button requesting the $39.99 PER DAY extra loss/damage waiver when I reserved the car online, and I certainly did not request it at the pick-up at LAX. Indeed, zero specifics of any of the fees and charges were ever mentioned or shown to me by any employee at the LAX Dollar campus while I was there. I've rented a LOT of cars in my time, both over the phone in the old days and now online, and I've never had such an egregious situation with a car rental company. There was a 20 minute wait to get to the counter at LAX Dollar, and I was whisked through in a matter of a few minutes to my car - all along I was just assuming the receipt I had been sent via email was being honored, and I would be charged only the additional $64.93. But that was so far from the case. I was whisked through so fast I'm not sure where I gave my signature, but I distinctly remember the lady holding the I-pad next to the car with my final check-out, telling me that the final total price on my credit card (on file with the reservation of course) of around $250.00 was being charged. This is the first time my final balance was being told to me, and of course it sounded too high! But then I said to her, "oh, so does that INCLUDE the amount (couldn't remember how much at the time) I ALREADY PAID ONLINE?." She said "YES." So, I trusted it was correct, even though it still sounded a little higher than it should - I figured they tacked on some tax or something extra. But if I had understood that this effectively meant I was being charged ~ DOUBLE what I was quoted online, I never would have signed! So, she lied to me - she said "YES" the $250 included what I already paid but if she was being truthful of course she should have said "no" and then I would have known that something very strange and wrong had somehow happened with my reservation! For a company that professes "We never forget whose dollar it is." I would have to say, Dollar is either delusional or dastardly dishonest. I rented a vehicle for 7 days, opting for "managers special" and pre-paid for the entire week. When I arrived to pick up the car I inquired about returning it early if I found I no longer needed it. I was told that because I had pre-paid I HAD to keep the vehicle for the entire 7 days. - I find this odd but whatever, I'll put the miles on your car instead of mine. The leasing agent was also very pushy about "pre-paying" for the gas upon return of the vehicle. I assured him that I knew how to pump gas and was even pretty good at keeping the tank filled since the last time I was left stranded without gas was in 1989. The agent continued to push, I continued to decline. - Rude, I thought, but this is Florida and perhaps he was having an off day. I returned the vehicle a week later, but only after stopping at the gas station to put nearly $27 in the tank, not bad since it's $60+ to fill my Expedition. I then drove the 15 miles to the rental agency where they proceeded to charge me $41.37 to top off the gas tank! So here's my question for you Dollar, how does a Kia Soul with a 14.3 gallon tank hold $68 in gas ($27 that I put in, and $41 that your representatives supposedly put in) on top of the already 3.5 gallons that were present when I stopped to fill it up. In fact, it's completely impossible unless the cost of gas were over $4.50 a gallon, which by the way, it is not. I think your representatives know EXACTLY whose dollar it is but through their own greed or your dishonest policies, decided it should no longer be my dollar. You have sent me no less than 4 emails in the last week asking me to rate my experience and I have gladly obliged you with a brutally honest response every time. I rented a car in Puerto Rico, on the 2nd day of the trip the car would not start I called Dollar and they sent a truck 1 1/2 hours later. I went to the hotel to get something, when I returned 15 mins later the car would not start again. I called Dollar and was told I would have to pay $50.00 to get another jump for the battery, or they can send the tow truck to pick up the car and leave me stranded without a car( rental company was 2 hours away) needless to say I was stuck in another country and had to pay the money, I went out that night and when I came out the car would not start. The employee explained to us that pre-fuel added the cost of a full tank at the going fuel rate of $2.14/gallon and that we could then bring the car back on empty and, as a result, would not be charged for additional fill up which would be $9.99/gallon. We agreed to pre-paid fueling at that time. We returned the car to the airport following airport signage for Dollar Car Rental. Upon vacating the car, we asked the Dollar employee if we were returning the car to the correct location upon which he answered, YES. When we received our bill via email (we were not presented with a final bill at point of final sale upon returning the car). there was not only a charge for refueling the car (at $9.99/gallon) but also a daily car rental rate for $118/day because we did not drop the car off at Terminal 2 of the MSP airport. Unknown to us, we were at Terminal 1 which is 3 miles from Terminal 2. Again, we asked the employee if we were at the correct location and his response was YES. Why didn't he tell us that we needed to drop the car off at Terminal 2 or we would be charged an additional $65/day fee? Why did we not see a billing statement at the final point-of-sale when we turned in the car? How can a consumer guard against extra charges in a circumstance like this, when we don't know the charges until after the transaction has been completed and we receive the final notice in an email a day or two later? Their point-of-sale contract listed that an extra fee may be added if car is not returned to appropriate location but there is NO listing of how much the charge will be...they could charge a customer a billion dollars a day because this information is NOT transparent. I have called Dollar and Enterprise (who owns Dollar) five times now and they are not willing to work with us on this situation. We agree to pay them for the car rental and will even pay something additional for not returning the car to Terminal 2, but they refuse to cooperate. Buyer beware! read more

Renter Beware! I rented from Orlando Airport. When asked if I wanted additional coverage I said 'No'. When I signed the receipt, I didn't notice that I was charged for additional Liability. This is something I always decline. It was the first time I did the Prepay and assumed that the prepaid amount wasn't taken off yet. PLEASE read the details carefully and don't make the same mistake. I had just gotten off a 4 hour delayed flight and got to the car rental at 2:00AM. I guess I looked exhausted and was a target. Very disappointed in their Customer Service. read more
