Had a surprisingly positive experience with Dollar Car Rental. My flight arrived in the wee hours of the morning. But, I didn't have to wait long for the shuttle to the rental car space. And, there were only a couple of people in line at Dollar to pick up cars. The line went quickly and the customer service person I spoke with was able to get through my paperwork quickly and get me a vehicle. The car was great. I had booked a compact, but was given a midsize Chevy Malibu. The tech package was great and Android Auto synced up easily. The gas mileage was great. And, returning the car was really efficient and only took a minute or two. My receipt reflected the price at booking with no surprise charges or fees. Just an overall good experience and I would definitely rent from Dollar again. read more

I had a family emergency and had to return my car to sacramento.International airport rather than san francisco international airport. I was unable to get anyone on the telephone for a duration of two days. So I drove up to dollar to drop the car off and encountered a very nice gentleman named Michael, who said he was overriding the car rental from san francisco to sacramento. When I got to the counter, the attendant told me that I was gonna be charged 300 dollars for the drop off. Even though Michael said that they needed vehicles because they were short. I find this quite concerning.Because I never could get anyone on the line.And tried numerous times. The woman who checked me and had nerve to tell me that she could not even check the car into the system.But I was good to go, and I could leave and that they would send me a receipt. I will not leave until I get a receipt.So she asks us to sit down and wait. Needless to say this is not a good place to rent a car if something unforeseen ever happens to you when you're traveling. Would give zero stars if I could. I pre-paid for a rental through Priceline to try and save money on an already-expensive trip to CA. The woman behind the counter tacked on $400+ in "loss damage waiver" and "premium roadside assistance" charges even though I flatly refused them and said I would use my own insurance. On a $250/wk rental that was already paid. Their customer service refuses to do anything about it because the agreement was "signed". Absolutely criminal how people are treated these days, I'm never renting from Dollar again. UPDATE: after I spotted the "Special Bill Info" on the receipt WHICH DETAILED MY PRIVATE INSURANCE, they claim they will refund the charges in 5-7 business days. I checked in my rental with a lady and she mentioned the water stains and carpet in the trunk that was sticking out from the sides. I told her the condition of the car was like that when I checked out. Well our Southwest flight was delayed 5 hours arriving into Boise and I rushed down to the rental car area just in time to see that Dollar was closed for the night. I remembered that Dollar was a part of Hertz now and thankfully their counter was still open so they had all our information and a car ready for us. We had booked our car through a promotion in our T mobile app that gave us a free tank of gas. In fact I had to ask or mention everything from reservations, giving id and even be the one to give the credit card. The vehicle we wanted was not available and settled for the last hybrid available. The rates are lower than others, but not by much so after experiencing this issue on 3 separate occasions I've decided to pay the extra (approximately) $10/day difference. I accidentally booked the rental for the wrong date (my fault I know), but I quickly realized and went to cancel well in advance. I talked to several people and none could cancel the rental or at least move it it the appropriate day. One of them directed me to a website that doesn't exist. Absolutely a mess. Fee was not what I paid through AAA. I've been upcharge over $600 and that's without the added insurance. They didn't Gate agent spoke too softly to hear and would not increase volume when I told her I have trouble hearing. Gate agent was dishonest about range of EV, causing me to switch to a more expensive gas vehicle. Gate agent assumed my partner and I were not a cohabitating, insurance sharing couple and did not even raise the possibility, simply assumed we were not and tried to charge me a $15/day additional driver fee- I don't want to assume it's because we're gay but it might be. Do Not Rent From Here! After booking a Hybrid Camry, I was pawned off on beat up hyundai sonata. Be careful "Or similar" Hybrid Camry estimated mpg 52 Hyundai Sonata estimated MPG 32 --- Far from similar, with half of the back seat room. With the visual damage, and the lack of gas mileage, I regreted my rental, went back to the front desk and asked for what I paid for. However I was hit with the "Or similar" statement that got my blood to boil. I canceled my rental on the spot, and come to find out there is no refunds unless paid the $16 option was paid for while booking! This is a gross way to conduct business, I was charged $197 for rejecting an orange, when I ordered an apple. Do not pre pay! You are only permitted a refund the "Day" you book your rental, and unless you book the same day you pick up, your burnt. I assume 85%+ of the rentals are "PRE" booked, thus they can refuse to refund you. I am personally boycotting *HERTZ rental cars *Thrifty rental cars *Dollar rental cars -As they are owned by the same crooks, that fine print your refund requirements. ***I had to research this! Took over 90 minutes to get a car and the only reason I got it that quick was my rental more than doubled in cost for an upgrade. The upgrade was a 4 year old Ford Edge that handled like crap. Embarrassing they even rent them out. They also told me I had three days (now for $318) but receipt gave me two days and one hour. After about 25-30 minutes she finally told me you can only use credit card well this would have saved time and energy I told her she was not a good person and she walked off saying I don't want to serve you! None of the rental car attendants would get a manager for me I walked down the line asking they really were in her corner! So of course I wasn't leaving without talking to someone finally a manager came I told her the story she said she was going to talk to her later they also gave me a car that they knew had a tire with a slow leak so I spent more time looking for a air station than driving where I had to go! I wish I could give negative stars for the poor service, unscrupulous/unprincipled treatment, and extreme attitude I received during my brief interactions with Dollar. I had pre-reserved (and pre-checked in with my credit card for the deposit) prior to my stay. Yet, upon arrival the attendant, with all the attitude and drama of a reality show diva, refused to take a valid credit card from a valid credit company due to "company policy." A fairly discriminatory policy, since it's a valid Mastercard with a valid, major underwriter. The agent was pissed I wanted the manager and tried to imply I'd have to weight up to 40 minutes for them to talk to me about it. Ha! Did I mention this happened at 12am after my flight? No thanks. They tried to bully me into sitting down after siting on a flight for hours and threw a tantrum when I didn't "move" far enough away down the counter while I waited for the manager. The manager was equally unhelpful, though professional. This asinine policy not only threatened to ruin an important business trip, but it was not disclosed in advance (not even in the fine print), despite what the manager tried to claim. This whole situation was especially repugnant, since I had pre-checked in and provided the credit card for deposit hours before my flight and they had no problem until I arrived at the counter. Discrimination, much? Luckily, Ebony from Alamo saved the day. She was willing to help me after witnessing my abysmal service at Dollar. She made an otherwise tense situation very pleasant. She knew my card was valid and told me not to worry. Oh, and I paid less at Alamo too! Dollar was AF. And shame on Thrifty, Hertz, and National were all unwilling to help me when they saw the piss poor treatment I received. Alamo saved the day and earned my business. Furthermore, I'll make sharing Alamo's success (and Dollar's failings) my business, whenever and wherever I can. I'll continue to use Alamo as long as they are service/customer focused. Had rented a vehicle one month prior to our reservation. Submitted the information digitally so I did not have to wait in line when arriving to the reservation stand. The online platform was saying our vehicle was not ready, therefore I had to wait in line anyways. Got to the counter and they did not have the electric vehicle I reserved. I was provided a kia soul gas vehicle and told it was an upgrade. Went to find the vehicle in the lot and it was not in the designated space as instructed (J34). So I had to walk around aimlessly hitting the alarm until I could find the car. Entered the vehicle and it had a low grade smell of cigarettes. I was already cutting it close for my appointment time and didn't have time to go back in to complain to get another vehicle. My fiance has asthma so the smell was irritating for her the entire weekend. UGH. Now I understand why these cars are SO cheap - they cannot be bothered to hire more people to handle the volume of people. Early Friday Morning - there's only ONE attendant and at least 15 people standing in line. A second employee waltzes in whom DGAF with her SBux coffee in hand. 10 minutes later, she prepares herself to start her work day. The line moves a little faster after her arrival, but not too much quicker. I had reserved a small car, and by the time I get to the front of the line (At least an HOUR later) I had to settle w/ a small SUV. Thankfully, I wasn't charged anymore upfront, but the gas made up the price difference in the end. This isn't the first time renting a car from Dollar/Thrifty, but Jeebus - PLEASE HIRE MORE PEOPLE to handle the volume of people in line. This is a shady and inappropriate business. We rented a work truck in San Francisco, it was filthy but we didn't think anything of it because it was a work truck and we were using it to haul things. Fast forward to drop off in Sacramento and based upon my wife's appearance the clerk accused my wife of going to burning man. After my wife furnished evidence that no, in fact, she had not been to burning man they said they'd still be charging us a cleaning fee that was more than the cost of the rental. My son even had us on the phone to hear the conversation and the young man said no problem. They then charge you for both only telling you to sign the screen without going over the paperwork and when you come back to drop off the car, they have charged you an extra $150 to $300. We talked to the manager "AMARIAH" who was not only rude but showed no compassion. She would not give us the name of the young man who swindled us nor would she give us a number for Corporate. I won't be using dollar car rental again. My family and I were on a tight schedule, and the car we received first had a bad wheel ball bearing that steadily got worse as we were driving-Nissan Altima. We were lucky to make it back but lost 1 1/2 hours of our trip. We then had to get back in line again to check out/swap for a new car. There was no offer for upgrade or reduction in price. After we kept going back and forth on trying to get a Toyota or a Honda, instead of another Nissan--we were told we could pay upgrade fee for a Ford Escape. After more haggling, a "supervisor" was brought over who looked to be 19-25 years old and could give us no deals. Finally the initial person asked if I had AAA, and said she gave me a deal, but I can't find it on anything specifically. The second rental car was probably just sprayed off with water (it had muddy streaks on windshield) and sand/trash in the back of the car. This car had a dial shifting system and on the 2nd day the whole dial panel (where you click down to put on parking brake) busted out of the little clip holding it and went into console. Fortunately, it still worked, but did not make us feel very secure driving mountain roads etc.. .with a flimsy dial shifter. I don't think dollar rental inspects and/or keeps their cars in good running condition. I was also disappointed in how they don't even attempt to offer any kind of voucher/discount/upgrade for the inconvenience their broken car has caused you.
