I saw that there was a Publix in Pigeon Forge and knew that's where we'd need to go to get our picnic supplies! Because we had flown in (and didn't have picnic basket on our pack list), I knew that we needed to get a small cooler to keep our drinks and sandwiches cool on the warm spring day. Fortunately, Publix had a nice variety of small lunch box size coolers and we found one for a reasonable price that was perfect for what we needed and would collapse down for easy packing to bring it home. We then made our way to the deli and got fresh, deli made sandwiches made with boar's head meats and cheeses. They're fully customizable and we very much enjoyed them! We were also able to grab some fruit, pretzel crisps, boar's head hummus, and bottled beverages to round out our picnic. Everything was great, prices were reasonable, and we enjoyed a beautiful picnic in this beautiful area. One note would be that the deli does get busy. We were there in the ease of spring (ie: no big National Park crowds) and we still had to wait in a bit of a line for our deli sandwiches. So, just something to factor into scheduling. That said, we didn't mind a bit and the sandwiches were worth the wait. Get to it!

It was located at the intersection of Great Smoky Mountains Pkwy and Wears Valley Rd. The store was clean, well organized, and well maintained. I was able to easily find what I needed. Prices weren't the best, but there were some deals here and there. I bought 2 bags of Boulder Canyon chips for $8 and a gallon of Publix drinking water for $1.43. It was quicker and very convenient for me to pay for my items while using one of the self checkout kiosks and be on my way.

That's exactly where The Village Market IGA came through. We stumbled upon it while traveling and found ourselves in one of those situations every road trip eventually creates: the snack supply was running low, thirst levels were rising, and a restroom stop had become a strategic necessity. The Village Market IGA delivered on all fronts. The place occupies a unique category that I can't quite define. It's either an exceptionally well-stocked convenience store or a small grocery store that accidentally became convenient. Either way, it works. The selection was surprisingly good, making it easy to grab some road snacks and a Snapple before continuing our adventure. The aisles were well stocked, and unlike some roadside stores where your choices are limited to three flavors of regret and an energy drink you've never heard of, there was actually some variety. The bathrooms were relatively clean, which on a road trip is often the difference between a pleasant stop and a story you tell for all the wrong reasons. The staff was friendly, efficient, and moved people through quickly. No drama. No delays. No waiting behind someone trying to decide which lottery tickets would finally change their life. Just a smooth stop and back on the road. Was it life-changing? No. Did I discover the meaning of existence between the Snapple cooler and the potato chips? Also no. But it was clean, convenient, well stocked, and staffed by nice people. And honestly, that's exactly what I wanted. Four stars. Today the guy on the cash register asked why we bag our items with the grocery bags. Does Kroger employees go to health safety training? It is also raining and we do not want our food rained at and get ruined by the rain water specially the dry goods since the molds will form on the dry goods.
