I rented a car on Saturday 6/4/22. The staff at the location was wonderful. However, my car broke down on 6/6 and had to be towed from Dover to Philadelphia. The customer service representative was rude and even hung up on me when I explained my concerns. I prepaid for the car from 6/4-6/9 and was not granted a refund. If I could leave 0 stars I would. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. From start to finish. We arrived at the rental car location to be told they were out of cars. When we told them we reserved the car 3 weeks previous they token us ok we will honor your reservation but you will wait at least 2 hours for your rental car and on top of that we do not have any cars or will not have any cars in the class you booked so you now have to pay for a upgraded suv which will be an additional $150. We had no choice as we were driving to another state to agree to the upgraded vehicle. They then told us we had no choice but to add their insurance after we told them that we have rental car coverage through our insurance and additionally AAA they still told us we had no choice if we wanted the car we had to get the insurance. After research that is not true. Additional $122. We were also told that no rental company around had cars available. We then waited in a crowded room with no water provided or available for purchase the temperature outside was 95 degrees with 85% humidity. We waited 2 hours for our suv to be available in these conditions. With the only option being to get a cab or Uber with our own money to get food or water. We waited 2 hours for a vehicle when we were told it was ready we walked down to the pick up area which was by where they clean the incoming cars to see 2 suv and 3 sedans being serviced. The sedans that we were told would not be available for to us because they had non available and wouldn't have any available when we pointed this out to the employee he said " well you can wait another 2 hours to get that car" at the time We were also trying to beat a storm with flash flood warning and severe thunderstorm warnings which after waiting to hours we now had to drive through or waste more of our vacation time to wait it out. The car took forever to be serviced and as we stood there and waited we could watch the people cleaning it move with no urgency what so ever. Additionally while at the desk we asked if we could return the car earlier then we had originally had planned she said yes to take it to the nearest location and we would be refunded for the days not used. When we got to the next location 2 days later to return car they said that we could return it but instead of the car being $96.11 a day it will not be $360.00 a day after telling them the situation we were put through they apologized and offered us a $50 voucher to use for a car rental on another occasion after us telling them that we would never rent from them again. We decided not to return the car as it would have only been a rerun of $200 off of our $1517.71 total for 5 days. We instead barley used it and left it sitting in a parking lot. When I tried calling customer service they said there was nothing we could do till the contract was closed and then 48 hours after that. I called customer service today explained everything to them stating I wanted a refund for the upgraded charge, the insurance that we were lied to and forced to purchase, and if possible they days we kept the cars because of the ridiculous price they were charging us to return it early. The women said the only thing that could be done was a refund of $150 for the upgrade. I told her that was not good enough she then put me on "hold" but forgot to put me on mute and then continued to talk to a man in her regular non customer service voice saying how I was stupid for wanting all this money back that I agreed to taking the car so she wasn't giving me any money back besides the $150 she then realized she didn't put me on hold and muted the call for a few seconds before returning with her customer service voice saying how all she could do was give me a refund for $150 when I told her I just heard her entire conversation because she didn't mute me she said ok and then continued to say all she could do was give me the $150 I asked to talk to the supervisor or manager she stated there was no supervisor or manager available she was the highest one there when I asked over and over who the man she was taking to was she ignored me and kept stating the same thing now with an attitude. She said she could but in a request for a supervisor to contact me "possibly" I said what do you mean possibly I need to speak to a supervisor she said they may or may not have time to call you. We had rented a standard car for 3 days and were with my folks, who unexpectedly showed up with 5 suitcases. When we got to the rental counter we told agent, Carol, that we needed to upgrade to a bigger vehicle. There was a long line for the rental counter and the agents were very busy, but Carol went above and beyond to find us a car that would work, and then was able to lower the upgrade price from $100 a day to $25 a day. Upon returning the car we read the agreement and realized that somehow the rental contract was somehow changed from 3 days to 7 days. When the agent came over to process the return of the car, I explained the situation to her and she immediately whisked us inside and got her manager, Summer, to help us. Summer was fantastic as she patiently listened to our dilemma, and then looked at our original reservation and our upgrade to figure out the problem. She then explained how she would correct the situation and asked the shuttle driver to wait a couple minutes for us. She didn't want to delay us any longer than necessary since we had a flight to catch, so after explaining how she would process the credit and new charge, she assured us all would be taking care of. When we arrived home later that night Summer called us to confirm that all had been taken care of and that she was putting the receipts in the mail to us. Now that is excellent customer service!! Also have to mention Dana, the shuttle driver. He gladly waited for us and loaded our luggage, and then gave us the best car rental shuttle ride we ever had with genuine kindness. We talked to one lady who said she'd been there for 3.5 hours because at first they only had two people at the counter... luckily (if you can call it that), there are three now. However that lady also said a family was here earlier to pick up a car for a funeral. You can guess what happened there - hint: they didn't make it there in time. Worst experience ever. I will never rent from here again. Plane landed at 8PM Thursday evening and the line for car rental was out the door. There was at least 30 people ahead of us waiting to get a car. When we arrived there were 2 people behind the counter assisting customers and very slow. Within 15 minutes, one person left so down to one rental agent. The manager was outside running around the lot saying he was out there keeping the cars rolling for the customers to have as soon as they were done at the counter. In my estimation he should have been inside helping the customers, And have the other employees take care of the outside, or at least put another person at the counter. (Maybe train that annoying woman who works the outside to assist inside instead of being so annoying & good for nothing) 1.5 hrs later, after confirming with the company that I rented from that I would not be charged we walked next door to Budget & rented a car. read more

Don't go to this rental place! I got scammed $500. They asked to drop a down payment and never got it back when I returned the car.

Bait and Switch to the extreme: Lies, lies, lies. Pros: Car was clean/ new. Car return was extremely fast and easy. Cons: They try to downgrade your car by saying there's nothing else available(ie. standard SUV to a Chevy Spark for the same price). They are dishonest. Standard upsell tactics(insurance, ez pass, gps, satellite radio??? Lol) PRO TIP: If they tell you they don't have the car you reserved and try to downgrade you or cancel, tell them that you know Dollar's policy says you can only be upgraded. Ask for a manager or for them to get corporate on the phone. PREFACE: COVID-19 is affecting everything, including rental cars. More people are renting cars instead of taking buses and trains, for fear of close quarters and infection. By the time you get to the check in desk, you're pretty much at the mercy of the rental car agency. They need to be there and they need to honor your reservation. Otherwise, you're screwed, because every other agency will be sold out at that time. THE BAIT AND SWITCH: I made a reservation (directly through the Dollar website) for a standard SUV-"Santa Fe or similar" about 5 days in advance. When I checked in with the Dollar rep "Carol" onsite, she told me, "everything is based based on availability, they may not have the car that you reserved. Do you want to continue or cancel?" Of course at that time I'm in need of a car and stuck at the airport, so I said yes. She then told me that she did not have any standard SUVs available, and all she could give me was a Chevy Spark. She said, "The price will be the same. Believe or not, all the cars are the same price tonight." CAUGHT IN A LIE: However, at the very same time, her coworker's conversation with another couple of renters was going down at the PERFECT time!!!: Dollar rep: "Wow I have a free upgrade for you! We will bump you up from a compact SUV to a full sized car." Other renters: "How is going from an SUV to a car and upgrade?" Dollar rep: "You reserved a 'compact' SUV. That's like a shoebox. A full sized car has more room for luggage and people. You want to see it? I'll go get it for you." Me in the background: [eyes wide] thinking, 'whaatttt theeeee fuuuuuuhhhh????' Other renters: "yes." I then turn to Carol and said,"How is it possible that they are being offered multiple larger cars and the largest car available to me is a Chevy Spark." She then said, " Well, he has those 'locked up' right now but you can get whatever they don't want if you wait." So while we wait to find out what scraps they'll leave for us, Carol checks in another woman and tells her she only has a Chevy Spark. She takes it. Carol then leaves to find out where the her coworker is with the SUV for the other group. She then returns before he does and says," Ok I have a Chevy Malibu for you(still a downgrade), but I took it, cuz I needed a car. Then just as my reservation is being completed several large families are dropped off by the shuttle, luggage in hand. I guess Carol had to rent out a lot of Chevy Sparks that night --__-- CONFIRMATION OF THE LIE: I tried to call DOLLAR customer service before I left, but was on hold for a long time and couldn't wait any longer as check in took 40 minutes due to the line(multiple people having issues with their reservation) as well as my own ordeal. I called the next day and the rep told me that they were never supposed to downgrade if my reservation couldn't be honored, only upgrade. I've never experienced something like this at any rental car agency before. Very scary. They just lied over and over again. Can't be trusted. Bait and switch. Don't rent with Dollar. read more

Reserved a car for 4 pm on a Saturday. Shuttle from airport was ok. If we'd known what awaited us at the Dollar/Thrifty lot, we'd never have boarded. 40 people waiting for cars. Agents had no clue how long we'd have to wait to get a car. No one in charge apparently. We added our name to a long hand-written list on a yellow legal pad. Really? We waited around for 45 minutes. Some cars came in and were washed and ready to drive but the guy who kept the list hadn't processed enough customers with contracts. Result: crew members walked around asking who among the crowd had their contracts in hand. Answer: no one. So people waiting hours for a reserved car, looking at cars ready to roll. Who owns this stupid business? And why? We got a Lyft to the Amtrak station and got on the next train home. We'll just do that next time. read more

Details below: -shuttle from terminal in Philadelphia airport took forever (greater than 25 minutes) -it was unclear that Dollar and Thrifty shared a shuttle -long lines and extremely slow service when picking up the car -frustrating, dishonest hard sell of extras from the customer service agent at the counter -car had a previous renter's water bottle rolling around in it - how clean are they really? I was lured in by the low price quoted online, but I will not be renting from Thrifty again. The price advantage is nearly wiped out by the "extras" and fees pushed at the counter, and the experience is so poor that it isn't worth it anyway. read more

This was not true, and I had a confirmation number. I booked through Booking.com, and I suspect that she and/or Dollar did not want to honor the booking. Regardless, Sharon knows nothing about "customer service." She was rude and dismissive, and she told me that the situation was my problem. She did not make any effort to make things right. Rather, she couldn't be bothered. I ended up having to walk to another rental car company to get the car I needed. Overall, this was a terrible experience. First, I walked across Arrivals Rd. and got there when the place was empty. I prepaid for my car, and thought I was home free. The agent told me that she needed a credit card for security deposit. Fine...I give her my card. She tells me this isn't the same card I used to prepay and she couldn't help me. I told her I didn't have that credit card on me and she said that I needed to call customer service. That seemed strange but...ok whatever. I go outside to call customer service and, while on hold for 30 minutes, 3 van loads of customers come in. I finally get the customer service to switch out my credit card. I get in line and waited for 2 hours. I'm not kidding two hours and there were only about 15 people in front of me. I tried to see what nearby Avis and Budget had but, because of the holiday, walk ups were like $1,200. The problem wasn't the people working there. The problem is Dollar. It was like doing business in the 90's. EVERYONE there had some type of issue because of stale technology and/or crap workflows. read more

I will not rent from Dollar ever again and will share my experience with every one I know, as I am doing so here. 1) Rented a van. Showed up and my reserved van was not present. Put in a Hyundai Accent. 2) Showed my Free Upgrade coupon. Agent tells me "You've already reserved your vehicle." (Apparently not...see #1) On the coupon: "Present this coupon at pick-up for a one car class upgrade." 3) I have spent 2 days, so far, trying to get a $0.00 balance receipt as is required by my company for expense reports. Again, I will let my company know this fact...I shouldn't have to spend HOURS trying to get a receipt in the correct format. 3 strikes Dollar....all in the same visit. 2 were from the Philly location, so that is why th Submitted a Customer Service report online yesterday morning....no response after 24+ hours. We rented a minivan for a long weekend. Check in on the quick side. Yay. Drivers - mixed reviews. On the way there, took forever for a Dollar van to show up and get us, and the driver was no help whatsoever in loading our large suitcases. On the return trip, we had the nicest guy ever who found out our terminal and helped with the bags. Inspector at exit gate - not a nice lady. MAKE SURE YOU INSPECT YOUR CAR BEFORE LEAVING THE LOT. APPALLING EXPERIENCE-DOLLAR CAR RENTAL PHILADELPHIA AIRPORT Prepaid full car rental 12/2022 for a 6/30/23 rental at Philadelphia Airport. All I owed when obtaining the rental was taxes and fees of $159. Because my original credit card that was used to secure and prepay the reservation was compromised and new credit card was issued , they would not accept the new card and told me I had to present the old card(which I had cut up). The Manager, Dave was unprofessional and unhelpful. He said there was no way I could use that reservation and was ready to leave me there with no car and go home. After complaining he reluctantly stayed complaining how he needed to go home and telling me, I "get what [I] pay for" and how corporate doesn't care about customer service of their low-rate business as compared to Hertz, their parent company. He stayed and told me the only way I could get a car that night was to make a new reservation and then he would figure everything out the next day, "on the back end", as it was too late at night and he didn't know how to put in the new credit card. After this 3+ hour ordeal, I left with my rental. Later, I discovered that the manager's "solution" was to book a new reservation at a much higher rate and charge me a cancellation fee of $100 from my original reservation! He was supposed to make sure my prepaid amount of $250 from December plus the $159 was all that was charged. After filing a complaint, absolutely nothing was done!!! Their service is far superior. This was the first and last time I will use Dollar. The Manager was absolutely right by saying Corporate does not care about service at Dollar as it's not their main revenue source. I am left with a bad taste in my mouth and feel as though my desperation to be out of their office was taken advantage of.
