Hmmm how to describe Big Lots…read more.. For those of you passing by on 251, I would say Big Lots is what you get when you splice the DNA of a Target with a convenience store. Pros: -The are a lot of little "one off" things you can get at Big Lots that will keep you from having to go to Woodmans or Meijer. Biggest things for me are toilet paper, bottled water, random snacks, or dog food -A lot of their merchandise is cheaper than other stores -Massively convenient, especially if you live nearby. Low traffic. Easy parking lot Cons: -You never really know what Big Lots is going to have in a given week. Its like someone routinely hits the "randomize" button on their merchandise -Not everything is cheaper than other stores, so pay attention. Still should beat a gas station though. I also think this store is subject to a higher sales tax rate in Machesney Park. --Store can feel a little disorganized, confusing (with prices), and cluttered. Bottom Line: If it wasn't for my cousin consistently coming here, I admit I'd never give the place a shot. That said, I'm glad he did. I will be back as necessity dictates.

Only reason I gave three stars is because I was finally able to get good service from the manager…read moreand another employee. Otherwise it would've been 1 . Me and my mom went looking for new dressers and there was an old guy named Steve working in the furniture department. He was AWFUL !!i went up and politely said excuse me ... he didn't even look my way . Completely ignored me . Then I stood there for a good 10 minutes right in front of his cash register, literally a couple feet in front of him and he didn't even look up once. My mom then decided to try and get his attention and said excuse me can you give us the price on this dresser , he looks at her and then looks away and completely ignores us!! We walked around for 45 minutes without any help until finally a manager took care of us !

Dollar Tree, located on the corner of Harlem and Alpine, caddycorner from the Schnucks, is great…read morefor picking up a lot of basics on the cheap, particularly if you're planning a party (which we were on this visit). We picked up bags of rubber balloons (25/$1) straws (180/$1) banners, crepe paper streamers, and even mylar balloons filled with helium for only $1 each. If you're on a budget, the Dollar Store is a great party planning headquarters as they also carry gift bags, wrapping paper, tape, paper and plastic plates, cups, utensils, and napkins; we picked up a lot of party supplies on the cheap here! But that's not all you can pick up here. The Dollar Store carries a wide variety of toiletries: toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, shampoo, cleanser, bath & body products as well as over the counter medications. There is a predominance of off0-brands, but if you watch carefully, you can pick up well known brands at the same bargain basement prices such as White Rain, VO5, Dial, Zest, Palmolive Softsoap, and more. This is also a fabulous store for teachers to pick up cheap items for their classroom. I buy toys for the prize box, fancy colored sentence strips for name plates, markers, bulletin board decorations, office supplies. There's a lot of stuff specifically targeted at elementary school teachers. You can REALLY clean up on cleaning supplies for the kitchen, bathroom, floors, counters, you name it. Anything you need to wash in your home or garage you can find the cleansers, sponges, or scrubbers here. Do you have pets? You can buy all kinds of pet supplies here from toys to food to collars. I picked up a bunch of books here to read on the plane flight home. There's a small automotive section, a craft section, even some baby supplies. There's a huge section full of seasonal holiday merchandise that rotates between Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentines Day, Easter, and many more holidays with decorations, party supplies, and much more. There is a large section full of food, snacks, and candy - many that are from name brand companies. If you're feeling munchie, this is a great place to stock up. Dollar Tree accepts both credit and debit cards, though there is a small fee if you want to get cash back.
