While I was checking avocados on the display case, I noticed that almost all of them in bags were rotten. I then approached a produce clerk and advised him that all those rotten avocados must be removed off the display case. He agreed to do it but did not take any action. I reminded him again. However, it appears that his supervisor or someone at the back room advised him not to do so. I then asked to speak with a manager and had the rotten bags of avocados removed. The rot was noticeable and it should not have to come to customers concerns to have unwholesome food removed from being sold. I may have to reconsider shopping elsewhere if it ever happens again.

A cute little thrift shop in downtown Victoria. This volunteer-run shop is owned by the Victoria Cool Aid Society, which works to provide housing, temporary shelter, and health care for the homeless. The staff and customers seemed to know each other and were friendly and chatty as we browsed. The store isn't huge, but it has racks of men's and women's clothing, housewares, shoes, art, and books in the back. Everything seemed reasonably priced, especially the books, which were $1 or less! Sadly, we only had a few minutes to look around and (more to the point) didn't have any Canadian money on us, so we didn't purchase anything. But I'd definitely come back when I had more time to shop, as I'd like to support their mission. If you like thrifting and you're in central Victoria, it's worth a stop!

The Great Canadian Dollar Store, in contrast, is well stocked, sparkling clean, the aisles are big and stuff is easy to find. The staff are very cheerful and professional. I went on a Sunday, when pretty much everything else on Beacon was closed, and it seemed like half the town was in there, hanging out and chatting. A very upbeat, happy place. Coffeeshops are passé. I'm going to start hanging out at the Great Canadian Dollar Store on Sundays!

However, recently I noticed that the price difference is negligible and you are essentially paying almost the same amount as if you were buying it at Walmart /Amazon /Costco. I rather pay one or two percent more and buy directly from Amazon/ Costco so I can get warranty, get it shipped to my doorstep, and make use of the return policy. Also, after returning home, I noticed that the new item I purchased had dents and scratches all over it. Even though the sales associate told me it was in perfect condition. The downside was that the rice milk was WAY beyond expired, I didn't realize it until today when I was trying to have some and it tasted funny to me. Personally, I would give these people a C- because it seems to me that they don't check their products often enough to see if they're still good or not. Other than that, the service wasn't too shabby, employees were very polite and all that, it would just be highly appreciated if they checked their products regularly because as a grocery employee myself, it is very critical that they are not selling expired groceries to their customers, ESPECIALLY elderly people and children, because it can make people really sick

If you want to pay a lot more for fancy, try somewhere else.
