Thrifty foods has done it again. Changes that ignore the customer base. Latest example, "let's change the location of everything". I stopped in after work to gather items for tonight's dinner. I couldn't find half of what I was looking for. I finally gave up. Sobeys has moved stuff to different locations throughout the store. I don't have time to hunt for anything. read more

For years, Thrifty Foods was my go-to grocer. Since the Sobey's involvement, I rarely visit the store. Even the "special" prices are out of line with other local stores, Save-on-Foods and, of course Walmart. It is unfortunate, because the staff at my Thriftys is excellent, and the location is perfect for me. The price differences are not worth my loyalty though. read more

I shop at thrifty regularly. I purchased compliments spring mix salad. It was soaking wet. I returned it the next day with no problems. Once again salad was crappie! Do not purchase this product!!! It will rune your dinner. read more

Such a convenient little grocery stop in Victoria! My bf and I stopped by to grab some snacks for the ferry back to Vancouver and were pleasantly surprised by the selection of snacks they offered and the fresh produce available! They had fresh tuna sashimi and shrimps at an amazing price - honestly tasted the same as the more expensive seafood restaurants. read more

We drive out of our way to come to Thrifty Foods because we know they have everything we need at a better price than most of the other grocery stores. The fruit is as fresh as it comes in Canada. The meat department has a good selection of carnivorous delights. The young woman who works in the seafood section is SO cheery all the time. We love buying seafood here! They have Mum's favorite lobster and it's not a bad price. Nice people, fresh groceries and a good location make this Thrifty Foods our favorite store for appies and dinner. Wonderful selection. The fresh meat section was beautifully laid out. The seafood section ablaze with colour and selection. The live crab tank overfilled with wrestling, climbing, healthy crabs. Great service by happy, chatty counterstaff. read more

Any rational reason the deli dept. is removing product at 8:45 pm when the store closes at 10:00. To say that the staff is more interested in getting finished their clean up routine rather than serving the customers is putting it mildly. When asked for a spoon for the olive bar the answer was "they are all in the dishwasher" The only good thing is, they are not as bad as the one in Saanichton, who tries close down the meat, fish, and deli, 2 hours before the store closes. read more

Ok, to be fair to the Royal Oak store, this is not about them but, Thrifty in general. There is no means to review the "corporate" Thrifty. I like Thrifty, I really do. I like their bakery, deli, produce and pretty much everything about them. I really like and appreciate their community spirit and involvement. Yeah, you knew there was a "but" coming, didn't you. Well here it is. Thrifty, across the board, is more expensive than others and I get that. Extreme freshness comes at a price. But a can of tuna, a tube of toothpaste and a shoelace should be close in price everywhere. They're not, so I only shop Thrifty, for specific things and sale items. I am a sausage roll freak. Thrifty has, to me, the best sausage rolls I have ever encountered in my entire life. Anywhere. The best; period. Now, we know all products can shrink, right. Coffee from 1kg to 920g. TP from "double" to "jumbo." You know what I mean. Well I recently went for my sausage roll fix and they were out. "Equipment repairs and packaging changes" they said. "Come back next week" they said. I did and my keen eye first spotted a price change (savoury roll $1.69 to $1.89) and seemingly smaller. I pointed this out to the deli person (again, not necessarily Royal Oak) and he acknowledged the price increase and admitted, he too, thought the size had shrunk. He was embarrassed, like he had been caught with his thumb on the scale and was very apologetic. Not his fault. Cheese choppers don't set policy. Right? read more

I used to really love thrifty foods, and I still shop there a lot. But they have gone downhill since being bought out by Sobeys. They used to have great meat pies. Now they are awful. I bought a chicken pie today and there was very little chicken, if any in it. It was all filling. No good at all. We will never buy meat pies at Thriftys from now on. The soups are not as good as they used to be. On the other hand their fresh seafood section is very good as it has always been. A lot of meat, and produce is priced higher than competitors but usually good quality . I buy all my seafood and most of my meat there. The staff is always courageous and friendly. Prices in the other sections tend to be higher than Country Grocer, which is my other grocery store. read more

What I've always noticed about Thrifty's is how incredibly attentive each and every staff member is toward the customers. Try it: Walk up to ANY employee from the stock boy to the customer service desk attendant and ask where something random can be found like "Could you tell me where those peppermint toothpicks are?" They are trained so well on the art of customer service they will literally walk you cheerfully all the way across the entire store to that exact place on the shelf and show you that product, ask if there is anything else you need! You simply don't get this anywhere else. This is an indication of how much the organization values their customers. read more

This is my absolute favorite grocery store in the world. I say that with apologies to all the big international chains, from Safeway to Soriana (in Mexico), from Co-op to Kaufman (in Romania)... Broadmead Thrifty's is the best! When I return to my hometown of Victoria Thrifty's is always my first stop, and it's always the 777 Royal Oak Drive location that I go to first. Even though Thrifty's was (fairly) recently taken over by Sobeys, they still manage to retain a lot of their independent charm. It's true that there are a lot more Compliments products on the shelves than I would really like to see, but the selection of products is absolutely unparalleled. As a vegetarian I am drawn to their huge selection of bulk foods (with everything from grains to candy), their huge selection of natural and nutritional supplements, and most importantly their amazing produce department. Nobody can beat Thrifty's for fresh, beautiful, varied produce. Their produce department inspires me to eat healthier! My parents buy nearly all of their meat at Thrifty's, saying it greatly surpasses the quality at other local supermarkers. And their bakery is amazing... I think I lived off their cheese scones for most of my picky-eating pre-teen years! There is no excuse for shopping anywhere else in Victoria! read more

Thrifty Foods Liquor at University Heights - I don't mind the store - This review is about not being able to make a quick local call from the store phone. The young man at the counter said customers can use it to call a taxi, but not for any other reason. I think being able to use a store phone is an important aspect of good customer service, and I feel strongly enough about this that I won't be frequenting this store any longer. read more
