Nhs(RHs) is an absolutely amazing team. We adopted three from them. Our kitty willow didnt work out when we ended up getting our dog mya our German shepherd so we had to send the kitty back but we had her a good month and a half before giving her back. Then came my dog Terri aka sage now. And I couldn't be happier. Before Terri though I tried giving another dog named rosko a home but that didn't work out and I took him back within days time. Don't get discouraged if you don't see a dog or cat right away. Sometimes it just takes time. Or when one doesn't work out or two... just think... this might be for a reason. Honestly the staff here is superb. I lost my baby cat a few months ago (Not an actual baby, she was 14. She was just baby cat cause she was so small compared to my male cats.) I decided to start going into the humane society to get some kitty therapy(wasn't really planning on picking one up.). I still had my two boys but my cat I lost was special and it left a little bit of a void. I went back a couple times for a few weeks and then one day there was an intake that was a little ball of energy that I just had to play with. But since he was new they were still figuring out his temperament so he was not available for meets. Went into my work weekend and I saw he went into regular population to where he could be played with on my work Friday. Had a friend that was going with me on occasion to see the cats. I woke up on my first day off to a knock on my door, She adopted the cat for me and it was a bit of a shock at first but he's been the most beautiful fit for my household. Don't shop, please adopt. HATE this place because of the current selfish greedy crappy director !!!! This facility used to be wonderful !! I so much enjoyed volunteering there, adopting animals, attending events. Now they suck and have for a long time. They just now finally have a live person answering their phones because for a long time you could never speak to someone, only an annoying robot. There are much better organizations to adopt animals through that make the process easy and enjoyable like it should be. If you want a nightmare organization ran by a selfish woman to give your money to, then this is the place to go ! They have doubled their adoption fees, they make it extremely difficult to volunteer now and they have zero free adoption event days like they used to. No wonder why they have such high turnover because nobody wants to deal with the woman who runs the show !! So many people complain about them and will continue until that director leaves. read more

I came in to meet a kitten I saw online. He was already adopted to I was told I could walk through where the other cats are if I wanted to. Lou came out from under a couch and stole my heart. He's an 8 year old boy who was surrendered by his family. How can I leave him there??? So he came home with me. Here is the part I never expected: they've called to check in on US. they send surveys out at interval to see how things are going. They alway answer the phone if there's an issue. May grandmother got a dog here and it started. Attacking her. He did twice in one day. she goes to the hospital. The hospital is like well. You gotta go quarantine your dog the Humane Society. The Humane Society has no empathy. They don't care that this 80-year-old woman just got attacked by one of their dogs. That we had to pay a lot of money for you so we go there. They say well we're gonna keep your dog you have to pay for the quarantine and we need you to schedule an appointment for you can literally walk your dog to his death, as if my grandma has not been enough trauma by getting attacked by the dog, now she has to walk the dog to his death. Where is your empathy? How does that seem right . Is it this your job. we could just shot the dog in the backyard and it would've been for free. Honestly, you want a pet go find someone that's giving away free dogs go get the vaccinations and whatever you need by yourself this place no empathy 80 year-old woman gets attacked by a dog and now she has to pay for that and she has to walk the dog to his own death. Save your money because if you get a bad dog, you don't get a refund. You don't get a discount. You have to probably pay double the amount to go walk the dog to its death. I don't know what happened to this place; we adopted three of our dogs from the Nevada Humane Society in the past, and the process was streamlined and simple. Recently, we visited them intent on adopting a new fur-baby since my 18-year old dog passed away before Christmas of this year. I personally have visited the facility at least 4 or 5 times now and each dog I've asked about is either "on hold" for someone else, not available because for one reason or something else. When I tried putting a dog on hold when I visited after work, the front desk guy said I couldn't do that. A couple of days after New Years, I left work early so that I can be there right as they opened at 11am but the tech said the dog I was scheduled to meet was uncooperative and none of the techs could leash it. I'm happy for the dogs that get adopted but at the same time, the adoption process is chaotic, the place is a madhouse, and some volunteers can be a bit curt. The kennels aren't maintained, some dogs are locked in with feces or sick and they show visible signs of open sores or some infection on their skins. The most demoralizing part of each visit is if the dogs are unavailable, then please put a sign on their cage doors stating so, that way you don't get someone's hopes up. The adoption process leaves the person (and probably the animal) both physically and emotionally drained; rejection after rejection, going to the Humane Society to adopt a dog has been an excruciating and torturous experience. read more

When I first arrived a volunteer was very insightful and helped direct us to the right area for adoptions. While we were there we walked around and checked out all the cats and dogs. The kennels were maintained well and there were volunteers walking around with treats and being attentive to the animals. The Reno location never answers the phone. I filled out an application to foster over a month ago and never heard back. I live out of the way and when you get there, if the dog is visiting another person, they won't even tell you anything about it. They also stopped posting on their website if dogs are good with cats, children, other dogs, etc. So you have to visit in person to find this information out. That is a lot of gas spent to just ask a simple question. Also, their information on the website is inaccurate. One of the worst experiences I have ever had. I adopted a kitten a couple weeks ago and noticed there was some spots above his eye called for them to check on him to see what is going on. Turns out it was ring worm and was informed multiple cats that left this facility had gotten it. All of my animals now have ring worm and it has cost me hundreds of dollars. The woman helping procure the adoption was abrupt borderline rude. We choose a dog & waited an 1hr for a private meeting with the dog. The Dog costed $75 and we were warned that if she ran away or we didn't get her next shots or didn't register her w/in 24 hrs we would be Fined $400!! All we were provided with was a leash that was the size of an Adidas shoe string for a 53 lbs dog going with strangers. Which I had to practically beg for a leash. These guys are a JOKE. We found a dog we wanted. Brought our dogs in for a meet. They stuck us in a room while they basically did laps around the room with the dogs. Wouldn't let either dog near each other to see if they could get along. After 20 minutes of this hubs tried to get the dogs together and the staff refused. How do you know they'll get along if you don't let them actually meet? After wasting our time they decided the dogs would be more "roommates" instead of "playmates" and wouldn't let us have the dog. Huh? What does that mean? Staff are barely out of their teens and act like they're dog training experts. I guarantee we've been training dogs longer than they've been alive. Give me a break. What a waste of our time. AGAIN. We like to adopt but we won't be back until the shelter has a new owner. This was RIDICULOUS. read more

We adopted a very nice kitty named Leo from Nevada Humane Society and I can tell they really care about their animals from the way they were so patient with taking care of Leo. Leo experienced some stomach problems and we didn't know what to do because he is our first cat. But luckily thanks to the free vet service from humane society they helped us get him straightened out! Everyone is so sweet and caring shouts out to the reception lady with the glasses and ponytail I forgot to catch her name but she was swamped and was still super polite and patient with us. I am writing to express my disappointment with my recent adoption experience. Significant delays resulted from a misplaced application, compounded by unprofessional and unsympathetic staff. The inconsistencies I encountered differ greatly from a previous positive experience back in 2018. I urge you to investigate these issues and improve both application handling and customer service. The current process is unacceptable. The unprofessional and unsympathetic staff were the front desk people. One girl and a big guy. If it wasn't for the pet insurance people (Lindsey) and another lady , I wouldn't have known I wasn't even in their waiting queue for adopting a kitten. The girl at the front desk acted as if I didn't exist when I said "what happened to my application? She basically ignored me and pointed to the QR code. And there was a kitten that was still available and I asked her, and she says "someone is visiting with her." Mind you I had already been waiting for hours. If I would have known that kitty was still available I would have taken her too. Long story short I waited 4 hours to get my kitten. Thankfully my kitten was still on hold or I would have waited 4 hours and no kitten. Things need to change with this place. Adopting shouldn't be a stressful situation. read more

My neighbor moved out about a yr ago leaving behind 17-20 ferrel cats they are all fixed some of the cats been relying on her their whole life after a out a week I had to step in and help some of them would sit on her porch and cry due to the fact they were so hungry. Such a great place for people and animals. Everyone is so nice here and they care for their animals and the people who go there to give donations or to find new family members. They do great work within the community and prioritize the welfare of animals by providing low cost veterinary services like vaccines, spay/neuter and microchips. We were finally able to adapt to our new baby boy named Sun and boy is he a cutie- we originally came in Friday to see him but they said they weren't doing adoptions until Tuesday. Thank goodness we didn't wait and came in today. His brother Moon was literally adopted at the same time so bitter sweet. Definitely loved our second experience with the humane society. To our new son named Sun. The humane society supplied some fungal medication to further his recovery process which he's a 100% fungal free :) the staff here at this location are so knowledgeable and friendly making the process easier then before. Gosh, good thing I didn't let any of those negative reviews stop me from saving a dog! I would actually give them the max amount of stars PLUS if I could! Every single one of my interactions from the questioning phone calls prior to going there 1.5 hours away (and I'm so sorry I didn't get their names) , to the cheery greeter Jaylon, to the kind and understanding administrators Mike and Makayla, to the amazing handler David, to Lisa at the clinic next door...the most wonderful interactions and facility. Kind, clean, organized, cheery, animals best interest in mind. This is definitely a well run rescue with people that love their jobs. This is not an easy job folks. Do you think you're doing animals any favors by posting this negativity? Why would you not save an animal because you didn't like the way somebody treated you? Maybe they just had to watch a special animal out down? Maybe they are having a really hard day of no good news for these sweet things? Maybe you could be a little understanding and ask them if they are ok? If you're really into saving animals, one MUST have a boatload of compassion and not just for the animals but for the people of these incredible organizations that make it possible for us to feel good about ourselves, do the right thing and help out our fellow animals. So, as I said I am so glad that I looked past those reviews and continued on my mission to save this senior doggy. She has an instant dog pack of two other small senior lady rescues who accepted her right away, she has a new mom that is a certified dog massage therapist(ME) and there is no place in my home dogs aren't allowed, snuggly king size bed with lots of blankies, quiet one level house with no kids, a great fenced in yard, and my other dogs love kayaking Lake Tahoe early morning glassy waters so I already got her a pfd and we are going to at least DOUBLE her life expectancy from 6 months to a year to 1-2 years! TLDR: Stringent adoption policy with no flexibility. Poor communication when needed Full: My partner and I are maternal healthcare workers who work rotating 12 hour shifts (7 am to 7 pm or vise versa) which includes weekends, weekdays, and holidays. We went to the humane society looking to adopt that very day and found a dog who met all the criteria we were looking for. We started the adoption process but were informed that the dog would need to be placed on a hold as he was waiting for his neutering surgery. We were then informed that we would receive a phone call 24 hours after the surgery was completed saying that he was available for adoption and had finished his post operative recovery. We were then informed that when we received this post operative recovery phone call that we would only have 24 hours to come adopt. If we didn't make it within the 24 hours we were informed that the hold on the dog would come off, the money for the hold would be taken as a donation to the society, and the dog would be placed back up for adoption to the general public. This, in of itself, was not a big deal as we are not looking to father more puppies and came in that very day to take a dog home. However, this became an issue very quickly as they had no idea when the dog would be seen for this procedure and as such they couldn't give a surgery date. We were ready that very day to adopt but would be unavailable 2 days later as we would start our work week (12 hours each day) at the hospital. Not having an idea on when the surgery would occur, we had no idea whether we could make it within the 24 hour noticed period or not. So we asked the society about any exceptions that could be made for us since we would, most likely, be working. They informed us that, despite our intent to adopt, they would make no exceptions for us. They gave us a guess on the surgery date which was "most likely Tuesday through Saturday" of the following week. So that left us with two options: 1. Place a hold on the dog and pray that his recovery ends on our last day of work or 2. Leave the dog up for general adoption. So we placed the dog on hold and two days later, right at the start of our work week, we received a phone call informing us that not only was the surgery done, but his recovery was also done and we only had 24 hours to get him. As is apparent, we were both working and had no way of getting to the society for the adoption. We called the society a combined total of 13 times and were only able to get a hold of someone twice out of those 13 phone calls. When we did get someone on the phone we were told that there was nothing they could do for us. They took the money for the hold as a donation and released the dog to the general public for adoption. My recommendation: If you work any time of variable working schedule or in any facet of healthcare, I would look elsewhere to adopt. They are kind people but their adoption policy and procedures only lead to headaches and heartbreak. Addendum: They were unable to make any exceptions for us but had a reduce fee adoption event the day prior where 82 rescues were adopted, one of which had been there for 320 days. Unsure why they couldn't make any exceptions to the adoption policy when this event went so well. read more

Something is going on at NHS, and it needs to be investigated. Since Jerleen Bryant took over, euthanasia's have increased. They are often without merit, and based on who knows what kind of evaluation from her team of "experts," who of course are going to back her up if they want to keep their jobs. Recently, a dog in Carson City was on the volunteer walk log, was being walked regularly without problems and had been taken out twice, literally the DAY BEFORE IT WAS EUTHANIZED! Not even the staff knows why. She was a noted shy, nervous dog, which is highly to be expected in that chaotic environment. Outside the kennel, she was a different dog. Loving, sweet and happy. So let's put her down because she doesn't "show well?" And, I'm not a disgruntled employee, I was a long-time volunteer with almost 300 hours of volunteering (I quit after that sweet dog was put down). Most other volunteers in Carson have quit as well due to the sad environment there now. Do they care that they have maybe 4 regular volunteers now to get out all the dogs? Nope, they instituted a ridiculous, time-intensive training program which HAS to be completed to keep walking dogs. The volunteers don't want to do it, and I highly doubt many new volunteers will put themselves through that. They're dogs! They just want to get out of the kennel regularly; we aren't signing up to be animal behavioral experts. It's heartbreaking, and I'm making it my mission to let the public know what is going on. And if I was the only one saying these things, sure maybe I could be written off. But a Google search will reveal many similar complaints, as well as a petition on Change. So obviously, something is going on. *Update- I was contacted by the Volunteer Coordinator and told that they'd seen my "online" comments" about the organization and were deactivating my volunteer account. Ugh the plight. This is one of those places that I wish did not have to exist but I am glad it does. There are sooooo many sweet dogs and cats ready to go home for the holidays. Like many people in Reno we have obtained almost all of our pets here. We have never been disappointed with the health or disposition of any of them. The staff can seem a little judgmental and snotty, most mean well but can detract from a joyous occasion. The volunteers make this a great place. They spend time with each if the animals and can direct you towards a pet with the right disposition and energy for you. Even if you don't have room in your home for a new pet, you can always go by and spend some time petting and loving up the ones that are there. We had a great time doing just that. read more

I had a doggy date with Naomi on Friday 3/24 and I fell in love with her. Kate, who is an amazing woman and certified dog lover runs this program. She chooses the dog you date by asking you what your plans are for the day. Some dogs like to hike and some just want to chill. Naomi has a few issues, allergies and some alopecia which causes her to loose patches of hair. So what? This dog was so gentle and jumped right up in the backseat of my car. We went for a walk, even though she is upwards of 60 lbs. she was very well behaved. She walked with me, not always beside me, but she seemed to just want to be with me and she laid beside me on the couch and napped peacefully. I'm in Houston for a couple of weeks with my 96 year old mama who broke her femur. I was needing some comfort and Naomi was the perfect companion. I want her to be adopted but if she isn't when I get home from Houston I want another date with her. What a wonderful program for the dogs. If you love dogs this is for you! read more

We went for the 2nd time to drop off another abandoned kitty. The first one we found inside a small carrier just sitting on the side of the road. This next kitten about 5 months old was running around a busy parking lot at the Mega Wash. He was an adorable Cow Cat. My family and I have been adopting from NHS for 10+ years now. The staff has ALWAYS been super helpful and friendly. It is very obvious they love and care for all their animals very well and I recommend them over anyone! All animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before leaving which I LOVE because I'm a huge advocate for no backyard breeders and controlling the cat population. They also have so many helpful programs like The Lonely Hearts Club and they even give free dog/cat food for personal pets! Pictures of my babies I adopted from them in the passed years. Going to start this off by saying I wish I could give this place five stars. I love the mission behind the Humane Society. I adopted a bonded pair of cats recently in January, so they have only been with me about a month and a half. Honestly , wonderful cats, and I love them both. Went to go get their follow-up vaccinations yesterday. The vet told me that one of my cats has severe gingivitis and will likely need all of his teeth removed. When adopted, the shelter told me he had a broken tooth, but it "wasn't bothering him" because he was still eating. Animals will ALWAYS find a way to eat. I now have a cat who is going to cost potentially thousands of dollars, and the Humane Society said he was perfectly fine. The Humane Society is not up front about their cats health problems. If you are going to adopt from them, be EXTREMELY CAREFUL and ask multiple questions. read more
