The people in the food bank are so friendly and polite. They don't make me feel less valuable as a person just cause I need help sometimes.

September 13, 2025 was my most recent visit to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada…read more Kudos to Nancy V of Reno who tirelessly coordinates the volunteer efforts at least 6 times a year at this Food Bank location. Here is my story: Very organized Very neat and clean establishment Very articulate Manager Very worthy cause Get there and volunteer for 3 hours. Wash your hands and dawn your gloves. Get assigned to a station and get to work. This journey, I sorted canned goods. We need to check on several things and they are: expiration date of product and condition of good. Each type of food in cans have different expiration dates. They are sorted by container in advance of our getting to work. They had pallets of dried goods, infant foods, paper products, and the list goes on. It is my understanding that Walmart (whose regional distribution center is a block away) brings their stale dated or expired goods to The FBNN for repacking and distribution. Nothing goes to waste. Whatever does not got out to various charities goes out to various farms to feed their herd. A worthwhile cause, a worthwhile journey! Hana Hou Nancy V

The dining room is beautiful and clean and the food was excellent. When I was there they had chicken Alfredo pasta, green beans, bread, and a big generous bowl of vegetable soup. They provide self service water and when available they have cookies or some kind of dessert. Everyone who works there with the exception of the kitchen staff are volunteers. Dana is in charge of the kitchen and Service on the weekends and she is amazing. She knew everyone by first name. She runs a tight ship, and the food was exceptional. This is the only place in Carson City where these people can go and get a hot meal and be treated with so much respect, thank you Jim Peckam director for providing not only great meals, but a food bank, laundry and shower facilities, and all kinds of other things.

Usually everyone at this location is nice. However yesterday…read morea young girl at the cash register was extremely rude and unprofessional. A nice lady rang me up and accidentally gave me a torn 10 dollar bill. I asked for another one or two fives. she apologized and said please wait a second, I am new and I can't open the drawer. she was very polite and asked the young gal how to do a no sale. The younger gal was totally rude to her she again asked for help so I could be on my way and ignored her again. The lady who rang me up apologized again and explained the situation. Finally I had to raise my voice to the younger girl, as it was ridiculous how we both were being treated. This is out of character for me, but really, just tell the new lady how to open the drawer and learn manners and how to multitask!

I went to this non-profit center and food bank Wednesday, April 3, 2019. This building is located…read morenext to a school. They have small parking a lot (no handicapped spaces, by the way), which was full because one car was not parked correctly and took up two spaces. I saw someone else access the place by pulling by the center using the school parking, but there is a sign it is only for school personnel during the day, so I was weary of that. Instead, I parked on the street, which was a little difficult, since there are like literally 10 feet piles of snow still in South Lake Tahoe, even though it was April! WTF? I used to live in the snow-belt of upstate New York, and by April there was only a little bit of snow. When I went in, the office was empty, as they were having a meeting in the backroom. A lower-ranking worker, who was outside bringing in the pallets of food, was nice, telling me to go to the back room, and also apologizing for blocking the entry way. He also sneaked me extra bread at the end. The other employee who came out of the meeting was super friendly, and showed me what to do. It is very informal there. There was no line. You just walk in and you can take one pre-made bag of commodities, and whatever bread and other items they have on the shelf by the kitchen. There are no forms or verifications required. Their website said they only had USDA commodities (food) beginning on the second Friday of the month until they run out, but I guess they must have changed that. In the office there were all kinds of brochures about other services offered in the community. This location also offers English language classes, parenting classes, and a clothing bank, and runs a used book store called The Bookworks, at the mall in South Lake Tahoe. My review of the book store is here: https://www.yelp.com/biz/the-bookworks-south-lake-tahoe?hrid=h23ePkYKh3Yz-GQmJnytEg&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct). I will give them four stars, only due to the parking situation.

I was living at Our Place (Shelter) and they contacted me about the transitional housing program. This day completely changed my life around. I entered the Transitional Housing program with a newborn. They gave me a place to stay, assistance with basic needs (diapers, toiletries, food, furniture, etc.), and provided a furnished apartment. Throughout my stay they gave us food to be able to provide a Christmas dinner to our families, birthday baskets for our children, and countless other forms of support! They provided my daughter and I stability, which I can never thank them enough for!! While in the program I was able to attend classes such as book club, financial literacy, and support group. They even paid for therapy! I met with a financial coach every 2 weeks and she taught me how to keep a budget, pay off debt, save, and get back on my feet. I learned so many skills in the program, and these ladies are incredible! They are there to support you every step of the way. When you're in a DV situation it can feel very lonely, but they are always there for you in moments of need! Never in a million years did I think I would have been in that situation, but thank God they were there when I was! I will forever be grateful to these women for helping give my baby and me a great life. I am now in my own apartment, could afford a car, and am able to stand on my own 2 feet and be a proud mom. Thank you DVRC for all of your hard work to assisting women in DV situations. You have changed so many lives for the better!
