Went in on a Thursday morning before I had a trip for that weekend. I wanted a quick buzz cut and a buzz shave (I didn't need clean shaven, because I could sort that out once I got to my destination; no sense in wasting time on a clean shaven lewk if I was going to have stubble growing in before I even go to my event in 2 days). The salon was (understandably) empty when I went in, because it's a freaking Thursday morning during business hours. The guy who was working had someone on his chair, and told me he'd be right with me. He realised I didn't have an appointment, but said that he had time before his next client came in, so he could take care of whatever I needed. Freaking sweet. I told him what I needed, and he double and triple checked with me before starting, to make sure I'm getting what I want. He was friendly and left me mostly to my silence when I wasn't talking all that much. I like that a lot. When I go get my hairs cut, I want the job done quickly, and for me to zone out for a bit. It's really nice having a guy who doesn't mind a bit of silence, and who can get the job done. I think I got into the chair, got my hair cut, got my shave, got cleaned off, and then paid my bill in like 30 minutes flat. Dude was lightning quick, which tells me that he knows what he's doing, and has been doing it a long time. I'd imagine that if you have a more complicated haircut, and are more of a chatty person, it might take a bit longer, but for me, it was excellent. I don't like to be in the barber's chair for very long, because I just need a quick all over my head buzz, and I want to be on my way. I think that because what I wanted was so basic and simple, I paid like $30 (give or take;I can't remember the exact amount because this was a few weeks back) for both. He even went through and buzzed down my hairy ears. Sorry for that detail. When you get old, hair starts showing up in random places, and leaves places where you want it to be. I wish I could remember my barber's name, because he is really good at what he does. I suggested that my partner go see him too, so we can support local talent (instead of going into NYC for a haircut). He also came home with a fly haircut, and paid like $30 or $35 for it. It was not a lot of money, he came home looking good, and the dude did his job well. If you don't have cash on you, the barber is OK to take Zelle or Apple Cash or cash app or whatever. I could not be happier with Martha and her team at the Dominican beauty salon !!!!! They open early and are delightful first thing in the morning. They offer an array of services including barber and male grooming. They have enough staff so there is ever a real wait. I don't know how to convey the genuine love,care and skill that Martha displays when she or her team is handling your tresses !! Ok so low key .... I've been coming to Martha with my hair issues since I was about ten ( she was in a different location then in central ave) every time my hair was wayyyy to dry or crazy matted ..... she helped me out ! Warning to the next person, Martha or Jenny put a perm or keratin treatment in my daughter's hair without permission, without my consent and without my knowledge. DONT TRUST THEM! My daughter's hair was breaking off day after leaving there. Her hair texture is limp and not the same. Honestly I was going with an open mind to this place and with great disappointment I left. Came in with my hair washed and leave in conditioner. I was there for an 8:30 am appointment, got in at 8 am just in case and was already with my rollers at 8:30 am. I was literally left 2 hours in the dryer and removed myself from the dryer because my scalp was hurting. This place is not clean whatsoever. I should have realized this when I kept seeing clients bringing their own shampoo, conditioner, Bobby pins and brushes. I requested my hair to be straighten on the top and curled up in the back bottom. Easy right? It was sad that this simple hairstyle was not able to be done. May I comment that it was pretty nasty to see the wicker basket of dirty brushes used over and over. Never cleaned or disinfected after each use. Seats were not sprayed or disinfected after each use by the clients as the barbers did for their clients. My hair poofed up the minute I came out the salon. I do not recommend this place. Unhealthy environment, appointment not honored, dirty working equipment and no talent as a hair stylist. Btw - my hair smelled like burned hair even after 3 washes. read more

My hair has been shedding like crazy every since I left this salon. I have tried trimming it but it is still shedding. BEWARE OF THIS PLACE IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR HAIR ! They also dont accept debit cards and their atm was down when I went so I had to go across the street to take out money to pay for my service. I have a love/hate relationship with this place. I used to go here religiously because of their low prices and it's a relatively quick turnaround but, I've since realized that some things are worth paying for; good service and salon quality products. I decided I was going to take a break from the relaxers for a while and I went in for a wash and wrap, they washed my hair and deep-conditioned it. They do a great job at washing hair, though, the products used are questionable. When I got into the chair to be rolled, the technician hollered out to the owner who danced her way over to the chair (she dances to the too-loud Spanish music for most of the day) and together with the technician tried to convince me to get a perm ( after just having it washed- scalp thoroughly scratched) on the spot. When I declined, they put my hair in a ponytail and asked me to leave. Do I need to say anything further? The wash and deep conditioner were free but walking own the street with a wet curly ball of tangled hair cost me about 3 hours in front of a mirror and a fair amount of embarrassment. I'm back to relaxing now but I can't say that I'd go back again after being treated so poorly. If you don't relax, don't go here! If you relax, bring your own products if you must go here. read more

I was charged $50 for a wash, deep condition and trim. The woman who I believed was the owner stated that because I have natural hair its more work & i couldn't get under the dryer & that they would have to blow dry my hair. ( my hair is neck length when straighten) When I tell you the worst experience Ive ever had at a doobie salon. For one the shampoo didn't give me a true cleansing. She barely put any deep condition on my hair. I couldn't tell what types of products was used because everything wasn't in its original packaging. She used house scissors to trim my hair. Blew my hair so much that my hair is literally lifeless. My hair feels like i got a perm (lifeless) Im so pissed and I want a full refund. How do you charge $50 and your products are trash. You didnt even have hair/trimming scissors. Then you fry my hair with the damn blow dryer which wasn't necessary.I was in desperate need to get my hair washed and trimmed from taking out box braids but I should've got up and requested a refund and ran the out of there. I also still have dandruff now that I can see my scalp after taking the wrap down. I finally washed my hair to see I now have heat damage. My hair has been falling out since. Ive been chopping for months my original hair texture still hasn't returned. Im thinking of just literally starting over with a 1" fro smh I believe they have perm ingredients in their shampoo/conditioner. DO NOT COME HERE!!! read more

The owner of this salon is dishonest and for that, I can no longer support her business. A year ago I was charged $20 for a doobie. If you are familiar with Dominican doobie salons, you know this is considered a higher price than usual. Especially in Newark when there are $10/$15 doobies. But because it's so close to where I am, I paid for the service. Today she is charging $20 even though the price list has $15 and up for longer hair. Now - my hair is a bit past my shoulders, but not truly as long, as it is layered and short in the front. This woman clearly took advantage of the fact that I was charged a price previously regardless of changing her pricing (probably due to the lack of customers). When I called her out on it, she claimed this was the price because my hair is long. Which is laughable as it is not. If she would have been upfront after being confronted on this and charged me the true price, I would reconsider. But lying is extremely tacky and will not get you consistent, loyal customers. I will continue to make the drive to Hillside for great, upfront service and amazing hairstyling. Learned my lesson! read more

Wanted to try this place to take my 8 year old daughter, so I decided to stop by to get a feel of the shop & possibly see what all was going on there. Upon me walking in, and I might add that it was a Friday afternoon, around lunch time and it was not busy. Huge shop with one person under the dryer. Ok, cool. So I begin speaking with a woman who spoke broken English and told me that they don't do my kind of hair. OK. First of all, I have braids, why would I be coming to you to ask you about doing my hair in the current state that it is in now?? Second, you didn't even allow me to open my mouth and you're turning me away. So after explaining to this idiot that i am not inquiring about myself, she'd proceeds to tell me that they don't do natural hair. So I tell her I don't want u to lock or braid it, just wash and blow it out!!!! All I want u to do is wash and blow out my kid's hair!! What kind of Dominican shop doesn't do that?? So in her continued broken English she tells me that they only relax hair, then blow it out. So another stylist walks over and sees the exchange and proceeds to say the same. This to me explains why the shop was so dead. When it comes to ethnic hair, the "new" thing is that people are getting away from the chemicals. So most people just want a wash and blow out. I really do not understand. Then as I walk out the second woman I spoke to says after me saying ok, thank you, says thank you sweetie. SWEETIE?? I turned around and said don't you EVER on your life call me sweetie. Thank you. And walked out. Not to mention as I'm speaking with these two geniuses, a woman walks in and proceeds to use the ATM in the shop. They both in the middle of our convo begin yelling at tis woman that her stylist wasn't in and she couldn't come in right now. The woman was noticeably confused as to why they were all crazy but then just said ok after their cackling and left. I do not know what their level of expertise is with doing hair cause I never got that far, but I do know that their behavior was absolutely ridiculous and unprofessional. I have been coming to this business for about a month now and sadly today will be my last. The first time I came here things seem to be clean for the most part, fast, and friendly until today. I got a wash as usual and I bought my own condition as usual however today the owner felt the need to charge me 5$ extra because I used the dryer for 3 mins. Also every time the owner roller sets my hair I have to beg for a clean comb. After this experience I will not be back here. It was soooo busy (I went on a Saturday), I had to wait an hour to even get my hair washed. Pay attention to who you're after because they were calling people out of order. They had no line, didn't have any numbers, etc, pretty disorganized. The actual hair service itself was good. I got a wash, cut, set and blow dry. The owner kept trying to force people to get perms and even made one girl cry (granted, the girls hair was a little "stubborn"), but still should be a personal preference. Your first time you get a free deep conditioner which is pretty good. Would I return again? If it was just about the hair, maybe... but since customer service is lacking, probably not. read more

I went in on a Tuesday late afternoon for a blowdry, so it wasn't very busy. Vanessa was wonderful and professional, gave me a few good pointers for preventing hair breakage, and did not burn my scalp (which is huge!). I have tight curly thin hair and it took about 40 minutes. I don't mind the music... its actually good. If you want a quick, no frills place in a convenient location, this is it. These people are horrible. My hair is relaxed and I've gotten my hair done in there before. The first time the blow out was terrible, I've had better. I went back today for a second time and they refused to do my hair because they said they can't do hair that isn't relaxed. I washed my hair the night before and it was curly, she took one look at my hair and made a disgusted face. She clearly didn't know what she was talking about. I wouldn't recommend them also the place is filthy. I went during the fall and received several mosquito bites on my legs after only being there for about 5 minutes.
