They either haven't learned or don't care that northern Virginia has trees, lots of them, tall ones, with flimsy branches. Every single time the wind blows the power flickers, add a little rain or snow and I'm usually out for days. Which isn't even the worst part, they provide absolutely no guidance or reliable estimates for recovery of that power. Their system is complete nonsense. Ive lived in my house for 10 years now and have never seen power outages sooo frequent in all my life! If a squirrel farts the power goes out it seems! Having a generator has become a normal part of life now. They just contracted to clear trees from lines this fall and that seems to have been a total waste of money as I sit here on our third day of no power from about 5" of snow. I overlooked a bill and my electricity was turned off. It was cold rainy day in March so don't think that weather is their concern. It was only $80 so I paid it within 10 minutes of it getting turned off. It was around 11:00 am. By the time they turned it back On it was after 5:00. On another occasion, I was out of town and wanted to see if I could get some kind of extension. My bill was $280. They told me that I could get an extension but I needed to pay $230 of the $280. Um yeah, I just paid the whole bill lol. They also didn't have any options during the government shutdown so basically if you're poor, been laid off, or low income, use as little energy as possible and pay your bill on time because they don't care if it's cold or hot outside or if you have little children. read more

Last year they missed a meter reading and instead of basing it on the average of the same month from previous years, they based on my previous two months of the same year, which were usually higher due to summer season. I tried to contact them via their website, but it seems that they have made it purposely difficult for customers to reach them directly. So after given the runaround, I gave up and bit the bullet. This is the WORST electric utility EVER! I have lived in many overseas countries; Korea, Japan, Germany , and the United Kingdom, and I never had the powers go off as many times as I do here in Lorton, VA. I swear, it's like living in a Third World country here. Today, 30 September, my power has gone off at least 10 times in the past hour. It's quite hard to cook breakfast with all the intermittent outages. A slight sprinkle of rain outside, I notice all these power outages come with some minor rain. God forbid if we had a major storm. A few months ago we went without power in Lorton for 13 hours. Is this the Nation's Capital? I had better reliable electric power in Korea, jeeez. UPDATE: 2 October 2019. Just two days after my initial review, guess what? Of course, my power is out again. Went off at 6 p.m. and it's still off at 7:05 p.m. right at dinner time of course! What a LOUSY utility company! Customer service is non-existent. I strongly "second" all SIX 1-star reviews. I was told by a rep that "we have 2.5 million customers and we can't monitor everyone's account". Being in IT you cannot manually monitor, but you can easily automatically monitor accounts in today's age. And the very fact you have 2.5 million customers is the very fact you want to pay even closer attention to the details because one mistake can affect many individual lives. You're guilty until you prove yourself innocent. Doesn't matter how long you have been a good standing customer. Doesn't matter how communicative you are with them when you move or have a change. They will not consider your long term customer relationship, they will not consider life events, and they will make no attempt to contact you by email to prevent any false reports and claims to a collection agency. Now, my credit report is negatively marked erroneously due to a clerical error and I have no recourse nor help from Dominion Power to rectify it, except to wait for it to be removed from the collections agency which takes 30-90 days and then hope it clears on my credit report, which they have no idea if it will. They made a simple situation of a clerical error into a headache impacting my life and my business. The burden is on me that I must take on for myself to call those reporting agencies to clear up it up. This is not the first time this has happened too. It's a hole in their process that can be easily rectified as closed accounts with no balance should not be able to receive a payment. It should give an error or notification. Repeated mistakes is proof of poor processes. I believe the only reason there aren't more negative reviews posted is like us, in Alexandria, VA, we have no other choice for power and people just resign themselves. Our saving grace is we moved out of state and no longer need to use Dominion Power. I gave my suggestion to the Customer Account management representative on how to improve the process and hoped Dominion Power will be open to listening and take action to address it if customer service is important to them. Access to utilities is important to daily life for everyone and that important responsibility should motivate utilities companies strive to improve the service to customers even more. Having 2.5 million customers is not a burden you say is too much too handle but instead a privilege to serve and impact that many people's lives everyday. I live in a condo bill is almost $500 for one month. I called to see if they would at the least check the meter to make sure it isn't faulty or something else is up....nope. The last person I spoke to was unhelpful and monotone. I'm so disappointed and hope there is another carrier in my area. There's no way I go from 150 something even 200 all the way to almost 500 dollars (with no one home in my condo)! I've been a customer since 2013 and never had this amount due. Greedy crooks! I Have been a customer of Dominion since 2008. I live in Boston and choose Dominion as my supplier. In Feb of 2012 I checked my bill and found that Dominion was 26% higher than my local utility. When I called Dominion, they told me they were sending me a notice every year with the new rate, HOWEVER if i wanted a lower rate I needed to call them. I asked how would I know to do that??? So during the most recent storm a tree knocked down my power line. When the techs showed up (18 hours later) they told me that they couldn't repair the line because the tree knocked my weather head loose. Didn't disconnect it, didn't break it, just pulled it free of the cheap aluminum clasps that held it to the house. Which is bull, because they own that equipment. However, the lineman, when I confronted him about it, put me on the phone with a supervisor who told me that I had to hire an electrician to "repair" the weather head prior to them repairing the line. Electrician comes out, says that I shouldn't be paying for this, I get back on the phone with Dominion AGAIN and they said they aren't responsible. Get charged $300 to re-fasten the cable to the side of the house. Then, when I called Dominion for a THIRD time, which by the way NONE of the people that answered the phone barely spoke English, I was told that in reality THEY owned it all along. So I make a claim, then some idiot by the name of Roslyn Perry tells me that "regrettable as it is the Electrician should have known to contact us about the equipment so we're denying your claim". Recently I received a call from an outsourced branch of Dom Va Power to tell me that I was going to have my business office electricity turned off that day because I had not paid my electric bill. I have been with them for 16 years never missed one payment but did not receive a bill over the holidays. Imagine the mail losing mail? I was told that I had to go in person to Richmond, VA 94 miles away and pay them in cash. LOL I told them I could not do that, hung up and called the Dom Power company again who was kind enough to say, "We can take your payment on the phone, but why not just send a check?" Sucks!! LEGAL ROBBERY!! We have been with Dominion for 8 years and moved 1-1/2 years ago to another state. We have had tenants in our home for that time period, they moved out recently. When I called just to simply have the account put back into our name, I was told that we had to pay $488.00 because we are "new customers". She told me that if we are not the same people for more than 12 months we are considered new. I told her that made NO SENSE! We still own the house and always have had service there, the names on the account just changed. How is that becoming a "new customer". She just told me that is how it is. So since our lease is 12 to 24 months, everytime we have new tenants, we as the home owners are considered new and have to pay almost $500.00. She said yes. Every other utility company took care of changing the account back into our name, with no issues or fees. Dominion even charged a $15.00 fee to send someone out and look at the meter. Are you kidding me!!! It is amazing how companies can legally rob customers and there is nothing you can do about it. read more
