We were seated and noticed a large ad for a free Veteran's meal on November 11th. More about that later. We had heard about the "award winning wings", so I decided to try them as I enjoy good wings. BAD choice! When my wings were delivered, I had to send them back as they were burnt and charred on the bottom and looked basically inedible. I showed them to the server and she said she was sorry and the wings and fries were replaced about 15 minutes later. At least the wings were - there were no fries so she was sent back for more and they were served another ten minutes later. The second order of "award winning wings" were only marginally better than the first, but I ate part of them anyway as I was very hungry by then. To make a long story short, as I am a 36-year veteran of the CAF, I will forego this place on Remembrance Day and future occasions and vote with my feet, as we have dozens of other places to eat, free or not, in Kingston. I think it would be fair to say I was unimpressed !

It's located at the top of Princess Street and just about the last boozer before you hit the residential district. Large and airy, it's pretty much a classic English style Canadian pub. Wide and good beer selection, a variety of seating, big telly for the sports, plenty of attractive and attentive staff and a big pub food menu. We were just out for a midday walk around town when it started raining, so we took shelter here and had an excellent hour drinking good beer and chatting with our delightful waitress. Apparently this a great spot for Military College types and students from Queen's to get to know each other, but even four decades too late for that meta, I would make this my local at the top end of town.

Although many breweries/brewpubs have leaned into the now-cliché industrial look, KBC looks very much like an old school pub. Its walls are covered in the paraphernalia of countless beer companies, and there's plenty of nooks and crannies to sit down with your people and knock back some pints. Going to brewpubs can be a hit-or-miss experience for my non-beer-drinker wife, but KBC's enticing menu has something for everyone. Also, their sausage rolls appetizer was enough to ensure that we were both eager to try out the pub. The sausage rolls are of the bite-sized variety and come with a tomato-chili sauce for dipping. The puff pastry of the rolls was shatteringly-crisp, with some browning on both it and the exposed meat at the ends. I enjoyed the juicy, savoury meat inside and the tomato-chili sauce brought some acidity and heat to the show. Since we still weren't l that hungry, we decided to share just one main, the cottage pie. I always give mental kudos to places that use the proper name for this dish (it's only shepherd's pie if lamb is used) and take it as a sign that they know what they're doing. It's hard to have a *bad* cottage/shepherd's pie, but KBC's stood a bit above the fray with a bit more depth of flavour to its meat seasoning, as well as the smoked cheddar in the potatoes. As always, don't be too eager, as you will burn your mouth. Our server was very chill, but was still attentive and knew his stuff beer- and food-wise. It's easy to see why KBC is such a popular spot, and I'm glad we hit them up on this trip through Kingston!
