We waited patiently and excitedly for Don Chuy's In O'Fallon to Open. We tried to get in over the weekend, but the wait was too long. But we had no wait last night and got seated right away. Looking around you would never have known it was a Chevy's before, the decor was refreshing and a bit whimsical. Really, you wouldn't even know it was a Mexican Restaurant. We were served chips and salsa immediately and Katelyn, our waitress was there in a heartbeat. Katelyn was super friendly, knowledgeable of the menu and gave us a fantastic first impression. What a great start! They have a fantastic menu with many choices not found in other Mexican Restaurants. I ordered a combination plate of a Chilli Relleno, Chicken Burrito with rice and a Guaca salad and my wife ordered a combo of one Chicken Enchilada, one Chicken Taco with rice and beans. Bear with me on why I'm saying exactly what we ordered. Their drink menu is different in a great way and drinks are sold in various "glasses", including one that looked like a woman's purse. Very cool. I ordered the House Margarita, which was good, but on the small side and my wife ordered "The Italian", which is a margarita with Amaretto in it. It was excellent. So, all was good. But the tables turned and hence my 3 star review. We noticed our lovely waitress Katelyn getting a stern talking to by the manage in clear view of anyone nearby. Not cool. Strike One. Strike 2 was the wait.....about 30 minutes to get our food. And being a Tuesday night they weren't crowded. Strike 3 was a big one. The Manager delivered our food and.... it was all wrong. I got my Chilli Relleno ok but instead of the Chicken Burrito I got a Beef Enchilada and a Beef Taco. No rice, no Guaca salad, but some beans, which I didn't order. My wife got two Chicken Enchiladas vs one, and a Chicken Taco, but just rice and no beans.. We told the manager this wasn't our order and he just looked dumbfounded and didn't offer a solution. We had a movie to catch and told him we'd just have it anyway. He did bring my wife beans and me some rice. Katelyn came over and asked how everything was and we told her what was wrong. She was very apologetic and genuinely concerned that the order was wrong. The manager came over and she showed him what we ordered and what went into the computer. Once again, in clear view of anyone nearby, he chewed Katelyn out. Very uncool. The food itself was good. Not excellent, but good. I have to say, my Chilli Relleno was very good though. The O'Fallon, Illinois area is fortunate to have many Mexican Restaurants to choose from and we welcomed Don Chuy's as another. We will try it again once they have some more experience and get it together. Looking on Facebook, the wait to get food seems to be a common issue. The food itself, and the variety of dishes and drinks as well as the decor and friendly service will bring us back. But getting an order completely wrong, and to see a manager chewing out a great server was cause for the lower rating. read more

My wife and I tried this new version of fresh mex restaurant last night. Having enjoyed the previous version, we were familiar with what the previous restaurant interior looked like before. The exterior and interior where painted white, making the place feel brighter and more open than before, while solid colors were calming. We also enjoyed the colorful murals at the entrance and by the fajita press which is still there. Overall, the interior layout of the restaurant remains the same. The staff seated us quickly (in. ew padded chairs that were a little snug, so gorditas and gorditos beware) and got us chips and salsa and drinks right away. The menu was in larger print on durable pages with index tabs on the edges. The food selections were substantial, so on the one hand, there is something there for everyone, but on the other hand, the food prep and storage required to support so many food choices is also extensive. This led me to doubt how fresh the fresh mex claim is beyond warming up something previously cooked and refrigerated. I prefer a small menu over a large menu for this reason (the Cheesecake Factory is the worst example of this). We therefore took more time than normal to peruse the menu and select our entrees. The menu also had some confusing abbreviations, that we had to ask the waiter what they meant. The food took a while to come to our table. The manager came out and asked us how our meal was. We answered positively, but I found this comical because we were still waiting for our entrees to arrive. When the food did arrive, It was hot and looked good, but did not taste as good as it looked. My food was kind of bland and I was wishing I had some salt or hot sauce to add but this was not provided. It clearly showed signs of previous preparation and reheating rather than being made fresh as the time it took to receive would otherwise indicate. My wife ordered street corn, but it came out on the cobb (which is unusual in our experience) , I offered to slice the corn off, she still did not want to eat it because the sauce was not to her liking. I took a few bites. The corn was well cooked, but the seasoning lacked flavor and i again missed the salt. In summary, if you like Mexican food that looks good but is bland and not spicy, this is a good place to go. However, if you want food that actually tastes good, go somewhere else. read more

The food was great!! The service was good as well! Loved the decor and how big the setting was for multiple families or larger parties. It gives a feel between chic and modern Mexican style. The menu was extensive with loads of options that don't just cover Mexican cuisine. Many things like baked potatoes, salmon, and steak are also offered with brunch Monday- Saturday!! This was a highly anticipated restaurant for me and am glad I finally got to try it. Good food, good service (depending on how busy they are of course), and overall great experience. 9/10 would recommend! read more

Wow! What a stunning restaurant. A lot of thought went into the decoration. We were sat quickly and our server Armando was so friendly and attentive. The margarita flight was delicious. I hope they can get it together because this place ain't it. So for the good. We were warmly greeted at the front with friendly smiles and welcomes in Spanish. I had high hopes from the jump that this place was going to be good. I loved the decor inside. Stunning depictions of Mexican culture were littered wall to wall. Kind of like a rain forest vibe in the bar side. Well unfortunately that is where the good ends. Now I want to say that I understand it's new and they may still be getting the kinks out but the service sucked. Not the waitress cuz she was nice, but the food service. The chips and salsa and cheese sauce were horrible. The salsa was nothing but tomato puree with no seasoning. That came straight from a can or something. And the cheese sauce was maybe like some kind of mixture of cheese and sour cream or something. It was nasty. We then ordered 3 adult meals and 1 kids meal. One adult meal came out by itself, then 5 minutes later the kids meal came. Then 10 minutes later, the 2nd adult meal came out, and 15 minutes later the final meal came out, but only after we asked if they were making it still. It seemed weird because all they did was 2 enchiladas, rice and beans. I've never been to a place that had it all staggered out like that. It was really weird. Now to the food... I ordered the California burrito with carne asada and I get a store bought tortilla that hasn't even been warmed with some white cheese sauce smothering it. The cheese came out like warm and you can tell the tortilla just came out the wrapper without being warmed by how it broke apart when cut. The meat itself had no flavors at all. Nothing about it tastes like Mexican food. I didn't taste the other meals but they too looked sad and depressing. I feel they have a good foundation, but they really need to fire the chefs because calling that food Mexican food is an insult. Taco Bell tastes more authentic. read more

This low rating may be because they are still new and need more time to settle in. Service was definitely slow. We were warned our food could take up to 30 minutes to come out because they were backed up, but our food was delivered before our cocktails. We were sitting in the bar area and could see the bartender, she was not overwhelmed or super busy. Of our 4 entrees, one was not hot, just barely warm, when it was delivered. It was returned to the kitchen with the tortillas and when it was brought back, they didn't bring out any tortillas. They charged $1 extra for flour tortillas, even though when you ordered they didn't mention an upcharge and there was nothing on the menu about price difference. The food was okay, nothing special. The octopus ceviche was bland, fajitas were ok, I've definitely had better. The salsa was flat, no dimension to it's flavor. The cocktails were also not special. It is a cute restaurant, decorations were fun and bright. Maybe wait a while before visiting, but not sure the food quality will improve much. read more

It's finally here!!! Oysters on the Eastside!!! I got the Oysters balazos and they were DELICIOUS!!! I was so excited to eat them I forgot to take a picture!!They have ceviche with shrimp and octopus that I can't wait to try next time. They transformed this place into a beautiful romantic spot. The service was great for it to have just opened, everything came out smoothly, and plated to perfection. The drinks were AWESOME, fresh fruit and handmade, no pre-made mix margaritas. I am writing to share a very disappointing experience my party had at Don Chuy's in Ofallon on 8 September 2026. During our visit, we were never served our meals. Our server appeared to lack proper training; after taking our initial order, she returned 10 minutes later to ask us to repeat it. Following that, she disappeared for roughly 40 minutes. When I requested to speak with a manager, no one could locate them. The server eventually reappeared, and an assistant manager was sent over, but they were unable or unwilling to provide any answers or assistance. Additionally, there was a severe fly problem in the dining room, and when we asked another staff member for extra lemon for our water, we were informed they were out. Given these serious issues with service and basic standards, I wanted to bring this matter to leadership's attention. read more

I highly recommend this place. My wife and I had the steak empanadas, street corn, grilled octopus, and shrimp ceviche tostada. Pros: the steak empanadas were delicious. They were very heart tasting with an amazing dough. They needed a bit of salt, but that was easily rectified by a dash from the salt shaker at the table. The grilled octopus was very, very good. I am a fan of octopus, and the meat was tender and with a tomato sauce glaze. Very flavorful. For those who have not had octopus, this is a great entry level dish. I will definitely order this again, but there is a garlic butter version on the menu that I want to try first. The shrimp ceviche tostada was also very good. They served it with an aguachile sauce (a green, spicy, liquidy sauce) that gave it a big kick if you want it. Shrimp, onions, and cilantro. It was awesome. Cons: the street corn was the o lot disappointing part of the meal. It needed salt, but even with a dash of salt from the shaker, it was missing something. I recommend the restaurant puts the corn on their grill to add another layer of flavor to it. Others: as much as we loved the empanadas, they only have one choice. Mexico has a lot of types of empenadas to include pork, chicken, and sweet ones as well. In the future, I hope they can add different types. Maybe as a special on specific day or two. Considering how good the steak empenadas are, I am sure they will do well if properly advertised. St Louis area palates are not accustomed to ceviche and octopus. I grew up in the area and spent 25 years away with the Navy, gaining a lot of exposure to food. Maybe offering small plates (appetizers) of octopus and ceviche may help ensure these items stay on the menu. We are definitely going back! There about a dozen dishes that I want to try, some regular to St. Louis are Mexican restaurants and some not. Visit this place! Oh, the place is super clean and has a great vibe.
