In front of Don Don inside H-Mart, Cary, NC

As a long-time Japanese curry lover, I'm quite disappointed at Don Don's food quality/value and unfriendly customer service. Although Cary H-Mart's "food court" appears to have a great variety of Asian concessions, most of them are actually overrated, and this is clearly one of the overrated ones. When I was about to order, I was the only customer in front and I saw employees noticed me but just ignored me until the lady cashier returned to the front of the concession to take my order. She didn't look welcoming. Ordered a Katsu Curry (Chicken instead of pork) with rice for $16+. My order was ready in less than 5 minutes, and when I went to pick it up, the guy employee in the front just looked at me without saying a word. Don Don uses those boxed instant curry sauce that you can buy from the same H-Mart this food spot is in. My girl used the same kind of product before, and Don Don even displays the small pre-packaged curry in its concession. The amounts of carrots and potatoes are minimal (I found them after digging beneath the sauce) but amount of onion is just fine. The chicken katsu is crispy, the rice is well-portioned, the warm sauce is what you'd expect from a packaged curry sauce - savory and mildly spicy (though there are spicier alternatives). Although most casual customers will likely find the katsu curry's taste acceptable, warm, tasty, and spiced just right, the overall value here is lacking. For a $16+ price, we at least expect restaurant quality with more ingredients and maybe a small complimentary miso soup like what many curry places in Japan do. I don't mind the packaged curry sauce - just wish they can elevate it beyond what an average curry enjoyer can make with that at home. As I said in my Love Bao review, the H-Mart "food court" area can get crowded, especially on weekends, but most of the time, we were able to find seats. My food experience in Don Don reminded me of my first night in Japan (Shizuoka, to be precise), where we went to a small curry restaurant and tasted Japanese curry for the first time - it was a pleasant experience with complimentary green tea, warm customer service, and a satisfying curry meal that was worth it for an affordable price. Don Don is a misrepresentation of that and many great curry spots in Japan. Overall Score: 2.3/5

Good food but somtimes I wonder if it's worth the price, Peter is so right! It take sooo long (even if there is a line) to get a look or a "i'll be right there." The bento box is $16.99 on the menu asked for shrimp and was not instock, so I said beef. It rang up as $18.99?!!!

Balanced Flavor and Very Filling Meal Every time I come to HMart I always make sure to order the katsu curry. The staff are quick and friendly and the food is amazing. -- I do miss when they used to use metal silverware and ceramic bowls for the miso soup

The H-Mart food court really is fire. I recently tried Don Don and it did not disappoint. I love a good udon soup and their's was awesome. It was a chilly day and it was the perfect comfort food. The noodles were perfectly chewy and the broth was very flavorful. I ordered from a few different stalls and not surprisingly Don Don was the fasted one getting the soup out. I thought the price for the soup was very reasonable (under $10) and also appreciated that their soda was only $1.50 per can. I look forward to heading in again!

My first time at H mart and I was overwhelmed! So many choices. I decided to get the katsu curry. I was very happy with my choice. The food took about 10-15 minutes to come out after I ordered it. The chicken was a good size and had a nice crispy outside. The curry was delicious and worked well with the chicken and rice. I was so full afterwards. A lot of food! Price was good for ~$15. But I would definitely get it again!

This fun and creative court is located inside HMart. With many restaurants to try we settled on this one. Be aware if you are a vegetarian the broth is gosh based but yummy!

Had pork katsu curry which was a huge serving and was tasty. My cousin always orders the beef niku udon and says it's the best. I did taste the broth and it was very flavorful. Also had the gyoza which was just average. They were small and lacking flavor. This place is located in an Asian market within their version of a food court .

I been to this court food a few times and they have pretty good options here, today I decided to try this one and i was not disappointed, food was good and tasty, i don't remember the name of the dish that I ordered i feel like it was a little dry but it was good, dumplings were so good.

This was my first time trying Don Don, inside H-Mart, in Cary, and it was very good. We went early on Saturday afternoon to beat most of the crowd, but there was already a line of people forming around each food booth, including Don Don. We waited until they opened at 11 am and ordered the Gyu Don, Chicken Katsu Don and teriyaki chicken and rice for our son. Pretty good food. The beef Gyu Don was super fresh from the quality of the beef used to the steamed, white rice. It had some flavor to it but came off, mainly bland, so I added some low-sodium soy to help enhance the flavors. I should have asked for some gojuchang or sriracha, though, to add a little spice. However, my wife's chicken katsu cutlet and tempura crab sticks were amazing!! Tender, full of flavor and prepared wonderfully. Don Don was the first place I've tried inside of H-Mart and they didn't disappoint. I'd love to try more from here and will be returning often. 4 STARS!!

At first when I received my bowl I thought the price of ~$12 was too high for what is served. However when I took my first taste of the broth I quickly realized that this dish was worth all my money. The bowl is just the right size for a satisfying meal, you will feel full yet refreshed. The flavor is amazing and very delicious. I definitely recommend this to others!

Delicious and artistic! I appreciate this. + Beef Gyoza

Really enjoyed the gyozas and gyudon we had here. It was our first time in Cary and definitely a spot we will be returning to eat. Located inside of the HMart towards the back.

Great service, quick and happy to serve! They do not skimp on amount of food either. The price you pay here is great compared to west coast. Lots of thick pork, charred, and lots of noodles and toppings. High quality blended chili oil was also a surprise. We'll be back! The flavors here are rich and comforting, especially when it's cold outside. My go-to orders are the Spicy Tan Tan and the Tonkotsu, both of which are packed with flavor and always hit the spot. The broth is satisfying, the noodles are well-cooked, and it's exactly the kind of meal you crave on a chilly day. This would have been a five-star review for me in the past, but I've knocked it down slightly because the prices have been creeping up. It's starting to feel a bit steep for what used to be an easy, go-to lunch spot, even though the quality is still there. That said, the food itself remains excellent, and I'll absolutely continue coming back, just a little less often for lunch than I used to. Food comes very quickly but very limited seating so keep that in mind if going during peak dining hours. Still a top-tier ramen option in Raleigh.

The boys went with miso soup, which was flavorful but came out lava hot. Like, ice-cube-required hot. Tasty, but proceed with caution if you have kids. For sushi, we kept it simple and solid with a mix of one classic and two specialty rolls: Spicy Tuna, Phoenix, and the Crunchy Roll. All were fresh, well-made, and hit the spot. Food came out quickly, service was friendly and attentive, and the overall value felt right. Since we live nearby, this will definitely stay in our regular rotation. I had already looked at the menu online and knew what I wanted: shoyu ramen. The order was served with a spoon, a side plate and a paper towel. There was 1 soft-boiled cut into two halves and ample amounts of scallion, menma and braised pork belly. The latter had a rich flavor, helped in no small part by the pork and chicken broth. Not only that, the broth complimented the rest of the ingredients; the egg was enjoyable. My only (minor) complaint is the portion size of the ramen itself. It was smaller than I would like. The lady that served me was probably (best guess) the owner. Her service was impeccable. In addition, Kinoko has a pleasing amenity not found in most restaurants: an AC outlet at every table that was by the wall. This was very handy for a heavy user of laptops and phones like myself. Although there was music playing in the background, it wasn't loud. The server and I were able to hear each other, and I could also hear the voices of others at the bar. The restroom had an interesting decor of newspapers for wallpaper. That was something I didn't see elsewhere. If you love good ramen, come to Kinoko Ramen. If you like a quiet place to dine in, come to Kinoko Ramen. Perfect scores in food, service and atmosphere.

It wasn't crowded, but it was doing a lot of takeout for a ramen spot (generally a food best enjoyed fresh). The mala ramen (a mix of spicy and tingly sensations) that I sought delivered on the premise. It was a fascinating flavor mix, with some harsh notes that would be a discovery for those that haven't had mala before working well because of the balance of salty and savory flavors and some nice greens and sweet corn. It was unique and I enjoyed it. They had some appetizers and things that I wasn't hungry enough for, but I did wash it down with tea. It was a very reasonable price given how the hipster ramen market has gone. And they had enough menu options that returning would be worthwhile. I ended up going to the other local ramen place anyway the next day, and I would say that both were really good. You can't go wrong.

Noodle Blvd is located in a spot that you could easily miss, but it's easy to get back on track. I pulled into the gas station parking lot beside the restaurant, then just turned right into the restaurant parking lot. The parking lot is fairly small, so be warned about that. My friend was there when I arrived, and he sat at the bar. When I walked in the door, I was greeted with smiles and waves. It was very inviting, which is fitting for a ramen restaurant. My friend ordered us Lychee Margaritas, and oh my goodness, it was so good! We decided to visit right at opening on a Saturday, so the bartender was still preparing some of the ingredients needed for the margarita. The bartender informed us that it's usually better once a key ingredient sits for a while, but I loved the drink regardless. I ordered edamame for an appetizer, which came quickly and was good! Since I've never had ramen before, I asked our server what he recommended, and he told me about some of their most popular dishes. He told me the N9. Chicken Curry Ramen was a favorite of his and the patrons, so I decided to order that. It came quickly, and I was immediately in HEAVEN upon my first bite. I loved every bite after! I decided to play it safe with the spice and got level 2, but I can definitely go up a level or 2 since I love spicy. Highly recommend, and I will be back! Parking was easy, we waited a bit outside even though we had a reservation, but that's ok- they're popular! We were definitely seated within 15 minutes of arriving, and the server came outside well before that with the iPad to explain how everything worked. We were all new to the experience! We opted for a Louisiana style broth that was flavorful and creamy, and a beef broth which was a little bit spicy (other reviews warned about the spice levels, so I was prepared!). We could have gotten up to four broths, but I'm glad we stuck to two- any more would have been overwhelming and as it was I had trouble deciding what meat and veg to dunk in which broth. We selected a bunch of veggie, meat and noodles, and were still passing the iPad around as we were led to our table. There are two "levels," a $28 per person and a $40 per person. I believe the $40 per person came with a nicer cut of steak and more seafood options, as well as drinks like Boba. At the end of our meal I asked our group if anyone would have done anything differently as far as our experience and everyone said they would have gone for the $40 option so we could have had scallops! For the first time, I found the $28 option great because we were just getting the hang of it. I will say the sauce bar was highly spoken of in other reviews, so I eagerly got some, but hardly used it at all because the broth was so delicious on its own! Some of my favorite items were steak (I'd pass on the chicken next time), bok choy (we ordered more of this!) and mushrooms. Also we tried the glass noodles, udon and hand pulled and they were all delicious and fun to eat- I can't pick a favorite of those! Oh, and the spring rolls were a great starter. Some folks in our group enjoyed the spam and some other items, and it didn't feel too difficult to stay away from those bits if others of us were not interested. I'm only taking off a star because the "system went down" and the iPad stopped working for everyone in the restaurant. So although it is technically all you can eat, we had trouble ordering more. Since it was our first time, we couldn't remember everything in the menu to request more, and we didn't want to over order at the beginning so we probably went a little light. Thus, I didn't leave feeling as full as I would have liked. I think I saw others on Yelp mention delicious desserts, but we couldn't see them since the iPad wasn't working. They had a freezer case of ice cream but it looked like school cafeteria quality (vanilla, chocolate, strawberry) so we skipped it. Kind of a bummer way to end the meal. But I can't really fault them for having technical issues, although they could have had a backup paper menu to show us. In sum, I really enjoyed this meal and would go back in a heartbeat! Such a fun time, especially for a group.

Review for H Mart H…read moreMart is one of my favorite Korean grocery stores--ever. I remember when they first opened locations in the Bay Area in places like San Francisco and San Jose, and I would gladly make the trek just to shop there. I've never been disappointed. The stores are always clean, organized, and full of incredible food options. What really makes H Mart special, though, is that it's more than just a grocery store--it's an experience. Inside this massive market, you'll find a bakery, authentic Korean food stalls, and restaurant-quality meals being made fresh. It's honestly amazing to walk into a grocery store and have access to food that tastes like it came straight from a restaurant kitchen. Because I travel frequently for work across the Southeast--covering a pretty large region--I'm always on the lookout for an H Mart whenever I'm near one. I've been lucky to have access to locations like Cary, North Carolina, and the one in Buford outside Atlanta, which serves a large and vibrant Asian community. Whenever I'm within a reasonable driving distance--usually within about 10 miles--I make a point to stop in and enjoy a delicious, authentic Korean meal that's made to order and very reasonably priced. I've brought friends and colleagues with me, and they've all been blown away by the food stalls. My personal go-to: * LA galbi (Korean short ribs)--if it's on the menu, I'm ordering it * All the little banchan side dishes--I absolutely love them * Fresh seafood options, including live crab and fish that can be cleaned and prepared for you * A stop at the bakery for dessert--think croissant donuts, almond pastries, or a beautiful layered crepe cake Some locations--even the ones I visited years ago on the West Coast--would steam or fry seafood for you right there, which makes dinner incredibly convenient. Another thing I appreciate is the cleanliness. This store truly rivals places like Whole Foods in terms of organization and quality, even while handling live seafood. The parking lots are typically spacious, well-maintained, and easy to navigate. I also love browsing the aisles for specialty ingredients you can't find everywhere. For example, they carry my favorite laksa noodles, which remind me of a Malaysian dish I fell in love with while visiting a friend in Mauritius. It's always fun to discover unique items like that. The staff--both in the grocery store and at the food stalls--are friendly and helpful, which makes the whole experience even better. Bottom line: If you're anywhere near Cary, North Carolina--or even the Buford, Georgia area--do yourself a favor and make a beeline to H Mart. As a lifelong foodie, I truly believe: Life is too short not to eat well.
