This is the best Mexican food in AZ. My family and I have been eating here since they originally opened. It might not be everybody's favorite looking restaurant, but it's clean and it reminds me of old fashioned, good food. The service is excellent and the servers are attentive and very nice. You won't wait more than a minute or two to have your drinks and a bowl of chips and salsa delivered to your table. I have tasted almost everything here and it's all top rated. My usuals are choices between green corn tamale, shredded beef chimichanga enchilada style, shredded beef tacos, and either style cheese crisps. Note: the main salsa is not chunky, but smooth. On 6/18 went into Don Jose's and the A/C was out. About 106 outside. I ordered a machaca burrito, then complained to Manager Phil about A/C and his reply was " its been out for 3 years, its not getting fixed and we wont turn on ceiling fans because it gets hotter. Didn't leave because we were very hungry. Could only eat half my meal. 10 hours later Im still sick and nauseated from meal. Been going there for over 20 years. Never had a problem till today. Let me start by saying the food was delicious but it's so hot in the restaurant no matter how good the food is this will be a 1 star experience. It had to be close to 100 in the restaurant with what looked like 2 baby ac units near the back but those can only do so much. I am not sure if it is a landlord issue or an owner issue but it is so hot in that restaurant I won't be returning until it cool off outside (or they fix the ac). My friend said his parents ate here for years when they met, so this local spot has been here for quite a while! I am convinced I will never find Mexican food like how they do in missouri but nonetheless Don Jose lived up to my chimichanga standards. Stopped in on a whim from one day seeing people going into a parkin lot and realizing it's a Mexican restaurant so I added it to the places to try lists. Ordered the queso dip which was very flavorful, it is a thicker consistency and I prefer not too watery but not too thick but this did it for me especially because it had flavor. Carne asada chimichanga was crunchy how i like and the meat was seasoned with little chunks of guac mixed in. The perfect combo was drizzling the cheese sauce on that hot chimichanga. Rice and beans are extra and of course you cannot not get it. The prickly pear margarita was ok( this is where I miss missouri). It was served in a regular glass and no option for frozen or on the rocks it seemed. We got a party platter to go for an office party - seamless experience from the beginning to pick up! It was ready when we needed it, packaged well and stayed hot. The gentleman I worked with was kind a friendly. We got the taco bar with carne asada and chicken. It came with rice, beans, every kind of tortilla, garnishes sauces and toppings. The web page opens with lettering larger than life. There is pdf copy you can read, but you have to scroll way down the page. Keep going, it's way down there, just click on all the links, you'll get it. The menu is confusing, but that's only because they offer so many items. There is a breakfast section on the back. Some items are only ala carte, such as Chili Relleno. Inside what was an IHOP is Don Jose's. The pictures on the wall are flagrant Mexican style pictures. Inside it contains well-worn tables and seating. The position of some of the tables & chairs were from a previous renovation. It's only old. It is also clean. We got served hot sauce in a pancake syrup dispenser. There were two of us. We got one bowl. He later asked for his own. It's not cheap, but it's good. The combination plate was filled with food. The Chili Relleno are flat, not stuffed. There was confusion over which table was available. Most tables face out, into the sun or inside. Service was very good and pleasantly accommodating. The mens rest room is clean, and adequate. This is a well-worn place, with good food, and good service. It lacks in atmosphere and value. read more

A friend turned me on to Don Jose back in 1970, and it's been my go-to place ever since. They closed for a few years, but reopened under new management, with the same great recipes and quite a few new dishes (although I still order the #6 when I visit.) I'm surprised at all the perfect ratings on here. We ordered 3 items. The Chimichanga Fundido Plate, The Taco Plate and 2 Enchilada Plate. I'll start with the good. The chicken enchiladas were pretty good with a very mild sauce and tender plain white shredded chicken inside. The beans and rice were also good with lots of cheese on top. The Shredded Beef Tacos had a very crunchy shell with lots of cheese and lettuce, but the beef itself lacked flavor. With the addition of an entire salsa cup, it was really good. Now for the bad. The smoked chicken that was in the Chimichanga tasted horrible - like liquid smoke was just dumped in there. It was so bad I had to spit it out. We will never be able to say enough about our friends at Don Jose's! This has been a long standing tradition for my husband and I. We have been coming here for over 40 years!! Its our go to spot once or twice a week. We are always welcomed by all of the staff like family and treated even better. The food is consistantly 10 out of 10!! It has been my entire life. My mother ussed to bring us every Christmas eve and I can still picture it like it was yesterday. Makes us feel like we are coming home. I graduated from college on April 5th, and to celebrate, my two sisters flew out to Phoenix to join me. We were craving Mexican food and randomly chose Don Jose's restaurant. We were so glad we did! The atmosphere was wonderful, and we were treated like queens by both the hostess and our server, Gina, who is an absolute gem. All three of us ordered dishes that included Machaca, and they were delicious. Our food was served quickly and beautifully presented, and the margaritas were fabulous! If you're in the area, don't hesitate to give this restaurant a try. I will definitely return the next time I visit Phoenix, and I hope to see Gina again!
