Loved the food here. Stopped on 5-5-2015 and had a seafood chimi, spinach enchilada with beans & rice. I thought I was overcharged, but the food was excellent! Chips & salsa was the best I've had in years. It was a coincidence when I left there and stopped at a different place for drinks and ran into one of the family members who works there...he recognized me and talked with me like we've known each other for years. This is a nice place. The ambience is great. The restaurant looks clean and well kept. The service staff is nice, friendly, and very helpful and attentive. I had the jalapeño poppers for an appetizer. The were really hot but the waiter warned me when he brought them. They were good even though they brought tears to my eyes. I still eat 2 of them. The Indian taco was great and quite large. It's a good thing I only had 2 poppers as I couldn't finish all of my taco. Very nice place. If I lived here I would definitely go back. Went for a late dinner with a few friends the other night and although the food was really good, it was pretty pricey compared to similar places. I had the Camarones a la Diabla and the boy had a huge burritto that was loaded with so many jalapenos it was hard to eat. Great food, great price, great service. I came in just before 3 not having eaten lunch yet. I was greeted by a friendly waitress. She informed me that the lunch menu was available until 4. The chips and salsa were fantastic. Don't expect the red goup you get most places, this is real salsa and you'll find chunks of real ingredients. A little spicy, but really good. I ordred a Fajita Burrito, and the waitress informed me that it was a foot long. Yeah, right, not for that price I thought. But she was not kidding, it was a burrito the size of a subway footlong. Even though I was one of two people in the resturaunt the ingredients were very fresh, and you could tell it was freshly made. The burriot was also really great. The waitress did inform me that extra salsa and chips was more, but she was giving me an extra order for free. Bonus! Overall really happy, and I'll be a regular when I'm in town. Second time I have come for take out. I'd stay in it but I like to be comfy at home. The service first off is exactly what you would want when you walk into any place. This time I was welcomed with a smile by the server just like last time. Its busy tonight but I don't even mind because its worth the wait. The only reason I wouldn't give this great Mexican restaurant 5 stars is the inconsistent service. It's a great little ma & pa place, but very tastefully decorated (better than you would expect for its small size and location). The food is to die for - very authentic, piping hot and HUGE portions. And the prices are EXTREMELY reasonable. Did I mention HUGE portions? My husband finally tried the prime rib (it has a reputation of being the best in town - yes, at a Mexican restaurant). He got the "petite" cut for just $20. It filled the plate. He got an end cut as requested - and said it was hands down some of the very best prime he has ever eaten (and he has eaten alot). Of course, you fill up first on their homemade chips and just perfect salsa. His dinner also came with a small round loaf of some of the best garlic bread ever, a generous and well appointed salad, and a large side of fries. Good grief - we could have fed 4 with his meal alone....not to mention mine. It was a steak (actually, a huge piece of thinly sliced prime) done in a Mexican style with grilled green onions and a roasted jalapeno - served with a cheese enchilada, rice and beans. Priced at $18. As usual when I eat at Don Luis, I could barely eat half (sure those great chips and salsa have something to do with it) and had another delicious meal for lunch the next day. It's too bad they don't have a full liquor license, but really, what's better than a cold beer with Mexican food? They do make a "margarita" from wine, but it is really the only thing in the restaurant that I think is not worth the price - it comes in a very small margarita glass. The wait staff - although friendly, their efficiency is hit or miss. It seems that oftentimes they are understaffed. The kitchen gets the food out very quickly - so the problem is certainly not there. The wait staff seems like they could just use a bit more training in good customer service. But, it would never stop us from going back to Don Luis - our very favorite local Mexican restaurant - and in our top 5 favorite restaurants in Billings overall. You can't beat the food for the price, which is a nice change from some of the other great restaurants here, which are much pricier. read more

Ended up here because the two other restaurants we wanted to go to downtown were closed Mondays, and the third was closed for the day because of a repair that needed to be made. As it turned out, my friend and I loved our lunches. My fajita chicken salad was really fresh and good, with good proportions of salad to strips of well-cooked chicken and fresh guacamole, etc. My friend raved about the refried beans accompanying her cheese enchilada, calling them "superb." Great atmosphere, staff were friendly and very pleasing to the eye. I ordered a shredded beef chimi, with red sauce (should have gone with the green). Portions are very generous, but the rice and beans are extra bringing the cost of the chimi to over $15. Pretty spendy in my experience. Food was good. However the chimi was loaded with a variety of peppers instead of just meat. Beef was good and tender but nothing to write home about on the flavor side. Awesome restaurant! Great authentic Mexican food and great service. Growing up in Southern California, I can tell the difference between crappy and good Mexican food. I'm a sucker for cheese enchiladas and you wouldn't think that people can mess that up, but on the contrare it can be. Sometimes people don't use the right kind of cheese, but this place certainly did do right. I've only been here once, but I'd go again and again (if I was rich enough to go all the time). I came in on a slow Monday night. We were the 1 of 2 tables. Service was great. The waiter was knowledgeable about the menu and catered to my inane requests without attitude. Briant was very friendly, especially to my daughter. We showed up shortly before closing, but he didn't make us feel rushed or unwelcome. On the contrary, he answered my questions, provided valuable suggestions on feeding my kiddo, and waited patiently while we dilly-dallied and read the menu. Atmosphere was nice. Cool murals on the wall, interesting portraits and decorations. Portions are huge! I paid 19$ for fajitas texanas. I was a little miffed at first, then I saw the plates. Yes, multiple plates. There was enough for 2-3 meals. My husband got some massive burrito thing, don't remember what it was called. It was bigger than his forearm. He happily wharfed the whole thing. I'm pretty sure I won't have to feed him again til next week lol No idea how he finished that. There is no kid's menu, but they will make smaller portions, and they will make things that aren't even on the menu to keep kiddos happy. I brought in my very picky 4 year old. After reciting the entire menu to a chorus of "No, no, no", I asked if the chef could make her 1 small chicken and cheese quesadilla. They happily obliged and my daughter happily ate her dinner. I love ethnic foods, (Mexican, Asian, Italian) but 90 percent of the time, my kid orders Mac and cheese or something equally lame and unadventurous. I'm happy she actually got to try something new, and that the staff was kind enough to make it kid-friendly. Sopapillas. These are the best thing I've ever eaten. Deep fried dough with cinnamon-sugar, ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate sauce and caramel sauce. I will probably order an obnoxious amount of these for take out. McDonalds would have been a better option and I don't even like McDonalds. Menu was shockingly overpriced. $15 for enchiladas, you got to be kidding. In a panic i ordered chicken mole. What I got wasn't even close. A bunch of chunks of chicken breast that had been cooked in a microwave that were swimming in some sort of enchildada like sauce. Rice was dry and burnt. We were just in town for the night and were craving Mexican food. The restaurant has really great and festive decor but it was a little toasty for this August night. They only have beer and wine so their margaritas are made with wine. We got a taste of one and it was the peach frozen variety: very frozen and sweet but not terrible. I just prefer the original version with lime and tequila. They have a good list of beers, Mexican and American, but their wine list was pretty small and not great. We had a really delicious meal of carneros soft tacos (that was a huge order so we shared). The menu is huge and has a bunch of Americanized entrees that could be a turn-off, however their "specialities" are the only things that seem authentic, but we were very happy with what we ordered. The flavors were very authentic. The owner is very chatty and sweet and came over to say hello. Our waiter wasn't great but the other waiter seemed really attentive.
