    Chicken Valdastano
    Christian R.

Any time I've ever walked by. The place has always had foot traffic and a wait to get in. As in Mexico, lines are a good sign. I know it's Italian, but Playa Del Carmen seems to have some spots. This would be one of those locations. The bread basket alone is a good way to judge a location. The variety of bread was a huge plus. Garlic bread, flat bread and a couple of other bites. They were beyond delicious. Tried bruschetta as an opening appetizer. Very delicious mix of the tomatoes, mozzarella and olive oil. As the main course went for the Carbonara with Spinach, Tomato and regular Fettuccine. Accompanied with Chicken Valdastano, fontina cheese, ham and sautéed mushrooms. Excellent taste and cooked well. To finish up with a Strawberry Panna Cotta. The service was attentive and quick. The plates all came out within a quick amount of time. Would definitely stop by again.

The service was excellent and the food was decent. I took my mom for lunch here because she was craving for foods other than Mexican. Anyway, we ordered the Seafood Risotto and Mahi-Mahi Mediterranean as our main. The Mahi was good, and although the Risotto was full of shrimp flavored, it was a bit on the salty side for me. Finally, the bill came in at 1360 MXN or 85 USD. Nothing was said or mentioned in the bill, but obviously about 15% tips was being added to the USD amount. At the same time, gratitude suggestion towards the bottom of the bill for a 10% tips showed $137 USD. So folks, remember to CHECK YOUR BILL!!

Steak looks good. Is not. Spinach good, tomato good.

Excellent service. Prices are fine. I learned that I can't find a decent steak in Mexico. This one looked good, but was mostly grisel. The waiter told me after I was done I should've ordered pizza or pasta. That's their best items.

Great atmosphere! Friendly service! Spectacular food! Very organized and clean restaurant. Compared to Romeo! All the hype with Romeo and they didn't compare to Don Mario.... Romeo was unorganized, food bland, service almost non existent! I wish we had come here first! This is our last night and we definitely plan on visiting Don Mario one last time before heading out..... come visit, you won't be disappointed! The pizza here is excellent here as well, we stopped in for lunch on our way to the beach! Enjoy!

It's rare to go to the same restaurant twice for me while on vacation but the charm and comfort of this place drew us back for seconds. With freshly-made pasta of all sorts and wait staff dressed in adorable uniforms and smiles, it was an easy choice to return. The menu is varied including fresh sauces for spaghetti, gnocchi and ravioli dishes as well as salads, fish and meat options. I had the spinach fettuccini with pesto...delish! My boyfriend had the ribeye and couldn't stop saying "this is good" while nodding his head in approval. The lighting is low and if you sit near the outside railing of the restaurant, you might even peek the interest of a mariachi band that walks by to serenade you for a small fee. We loved both of our meals here and would definitely come back.

We love Don Mario's. We've been coming here for over 18 years. Ivan is probably one of the best waiters that we've ever had. It's always awesome to come to Mexico once or twice a year and see the people that we've known here for years and years. Their food is always consistent and some of the best Italian I've had..

Excellent food. Service was good and the ambiance was nice. Very popular spot with a consistent line of people waiting for a table. If you're looking for Italian in PDC, this is the spot.

Our table ordered 2 pizzas, beef carpaccio, Caprese, ceasar salad, Gnocchi, spaghetti & another pasta (the name is escaping me) and holy cow..... PERFECTION! Everything was excellent! We will return before we leave back home!!!! MAKE SURE TO ASK FOR THEIR SPICY OLIVE OIL!!!!

The food and service was amazing. It's a little pricey but the portions are pretty big. They have amazing liquor drinks. I recommend a Mojito, and the Shrimp Cesar Salad. This place is really close to downtown Calle 5 and close to the hotel we was staying and open during Tropical Storm Gamma. In my group is was 4 of us 3 adults and 1 teen and we ordered 2 entree, 1 salad, 3 pizzas, 1 ravioli, and 6 cocktail drinks. The total was $119 USD. Other wise than that, I really really recommend this place. Two thumbs up for me!

So happy I went to this spot during my stay in Playa del Carmen! My boyfriend insisted we'd have Italian food for dinner at some point. I'll admit I was very hesitant of having Italian in Mexico, however, I was very impressed! They offered bread with olive oil to start and the staff was very attentive the entire time. They were constantly checking up on us and refilling drinks when necessary. We shared a Chilean red wine and ordered the caprese salad as an appetizer. I ordered the salmon with grilled vegetables and he got the linguini seafood pasta. Everything was so so good!! The mozzarella in the caprese was so soft and creamy, I'd reccomend this as an appetizer for sure!! The salmon was fresh and delicious and the pasta was very flavorful. The food here was great and the staff definitely went above and beyond. If you're tired of Mexican or are just craving some Italian food while in Playa, definitely check this place out! (:

The food is second to none. The attitude is off the charts!!! Whoa!! I've never felt so unwelcome in my life. Since we already knew the food was fantastic, we did not let their shitty service deter us. I had the lasagna. It is sincerely the best lasagna I've ever had. My table mates had pizza. There is no speaking when the food arrives. Only chewing. Lovely, fresh toppings. Little works of art. Good selection of wines. The menu is full of scrumptious options. 'It's a gorgeous restaurant with outdoor seating. Easy location off the "avenida". I'll definitely come back. Let's hope they learn how to be nice.

Pulpo a la plancha (250 pesos) very good

My rellies were tired of Mex food half-way through our trip, so we decided to have Italian. Don Mario is on 8th & Décima Avenida. We started off w/ two orders of french fries (a couple of teenagers in the group - LOL). The orders (sorry, no pic) were very large and kept my younger rellies quiet: 4 Stars. I started off w/ a insalata griega (greek salad; forgot the price). It too was large, very good, and a nice contrast to all the seafood I have been eating: 4 Stars. For our mains, we ordered gnocchi, pizza, linguine vongole, and I had pulpo a la plancha (250 pesos - grilled octopus w/ vegetable skewers). My one rellie really liked the gnocchi, and it was very filling. My second rellie liked her pizza, and could only finish half. It was nice the pizza was cooked in a wood burning domed oven. My third rellie said her linguine was OK. A couple of the clams were not cleaned properly: 4/4/3 Stars. On the other hand, I really liked my octopus. It was super tender, and a decent sized portion for the price: 4 Stars. For dessert, my rellies split a chocolate mousse. I don't know how women can't finish their main, but they have room for dessert - LOL. In any case, my rellies killed the dessert: 4 Stars. Regarding the ambiance, its aire libre (open air) and good for people watching. The city prohibits cars past Décima Avenida, (10th Ave) and a lot of peeps walk by. There is also a gelato case in front: 4 Stars. Likewise, the service from our delgado (thin) waiter and his team on Wed, 6/22/17, was very good. They were very attentive, and spoke English for the benefit of my rellies. The only downside was my salad arrived w/ my rellie's entrees: 4 Stars. The total cost of the meal was $96 US including two bottles of water (50 pesos), a 1/2 litre of house wine (220 pesos), and a glass of sangria. I thought the overall price was very good vs Mi Pueblo up the street that cost us the same for terrible food. I would return to Don Mario in a heartbeat to have some very good Italian food in the heart of Playa del Carmen.

He delivered solid service, 5-Star. It rained during our meal so that did have an impact. As for the meal...it was a 3-Star at best. My appie was Bruschetta Pastorall ($147P). It was hot in flavour & decent tasting as well. My main was Chicken Parmesan with a creamy spaghetti ($379p + $75p for the spaghetti). They were good but not great. They SHOULD have been great for a $31.50 Cdn entree. And even though I asked in writing to have the meal extra hot...it was barely warm enough to NOT send back to the kitchen. This seems to be where most restaurants in the area drop the ball...taste & food temperature. Even though I ranked this a 4-star it's not really one...it's more like a 3.5. I doubt I'd come back here.

You feel like you are eating in a jungle. Most of the seating is outdoors but the jungle blocks views to and from the street. We went for thin crust pizza. The crust in fact very thin. I think my Mailina could have been in the oven a bit longer to brown more. I did not detect any sausage although the description said there should be. The wife got the Napoli and liked it. We started with Caprese salad. It was excellent. Best (most fresh tasting) I ever had. Service was inattentive. There was one guy who was waiter and street recruiter. It was too much for one person.

There is a hyped up "pitch man" standing outside encouraging people off the street to come in. He told me he could make a special that included a drink of "whatever I wanted" well since I was thinking of pizza anyway I decided to give it a try. I decided on a glass of Cabernet and even though it wasn't on the menu, a mixed salad. The waiter couldn't have been sweeter, he was very accommodating. I also asked for water and I noticed the waiter poured the water from a bottled water. I didn't question and assumed (u know the saying about a-ss-uming) that they just used bottled water since he didn't say anything. The mixed salad was simple but a nice size. I also ordered a margarita pizza. Well the pizza was just a cheese pizza with three pieces of basil. I asked for more basil and the waiter did bring a side of basil for me. This was really bad bland pizza! It reminded me of a frozen Digiorno and that was even being generous! When I received my bill...surprise! No special, it was only if you ordered 2 pizzas. Oh and also a tip was added on. I didn't mind the tip because honestly the waiter had nothing to do with the crappy food. I had heard that there was great pizza in Playa but this was NOT it! Not only was it my crappiest meal in Playa it was my most expensive!! Almost 30.00! And yep a-ss-uming, I was charged for the water. On my next visit to Playa, I will definitely avoid this place.

Chas found this spot while vacationing here and loved the area so much that he rented an apartment nearby and flys down often from New Orleans to stay there. We started with some Mezcalina's and fresh house fried tortillas with salsa's. The chipotle salsa and the avocado with cilantro were a nice change of pace from your normal salsa verde y rojo. The chips were clearly freshly fried and tasted great even without the salsa's. Our appetizers were a baked Camembert with fruit and tortillas, a sopa azteca, and fresh tuna tostadas. The Camembert was quite good as was the soup, but these tuna tostadas were one of the best appetizers I've ever eaten. Everything on them worked so well together and you could add a splash of soy sauce and it was even better! I'd order these as my meal at 90% of the spots in the world and leave happy! Our entrees were a grilled pichana as well as a lobster pizza from the wood fired oven. I love cooking pichana and don't see it often on menus when I go out so that was a nice treat. The temp was perfect for what we asked for and it was seasoned well. The potatoes that came with it had excellent flavor as well. I could take or leave the corn haha When Chas told me he was eating pizza in Mexico with lobster on it I said "dude, what are you doing with your life?" He said just wait til you try it. He ... was right. The lobster was delicious and buttery, the sauce had great flavor, and the cheese (which was not mozzarella) worked surprisingly well. I will say that I normally like my pizza crispy and this was missing that element...but the flavor more than made up for it. Add on to all of this the fact that you're surrounded by a beautiful pool, swings over the sand, a nice bar, and the owners dog is always nearby to say hi to haha. One of the easiest ones yet.
