Being a connoisseur of Mexican restaurants, I make a point to eat at them when I travel. Many have come close, but none have been as good as Don Sol. This place is the pinnacle of Mexican cuisine. Pretty decent Mexican food. Not too much competition in the small town of Mattoon though. Their salsa was the highlight of the visit.

Clean! Cheap! Anything with shrimp is great! They grill and season them! Avoid the fried ice cream though.

We have been coming to Don Sol since they opened the doors. And even thru many moves (Military family) we always come back to Don Sol every chance we get. Their customer service has always been amazing and the food is even better! I only gave them 4 stars because they have not franchised and put one near where we live now! The food is decent Mexican. Portions are large which is a plus for me. Wait staff tend to be laid back so it can be a bit dragged out service. The place is rarely busy so seating is pretty open. Reasonable prices and a average Mexican restaurant. read more

I have one word to describe this place -- ROACHES! And that's IN THE FOOD...I witnessed it with my own eyes, crawling around in the dessert, and was mortified. Perhaps even more mortifying is the fact that once the wait staff was notified of the issue, there was a) NO apology, b) NO free meal, and c) no action taken to remove the contaminated food from the buffet. This place has lines and lines of people for their Sunday buffet, who have no idea what lies (or is crawling) just beneath the surface. Don Sol has an excellent selection of seafood dishes and grilled foods. The typical Mexican fare is good as well. On Sundays a buffet is available and allows you to create multiple options. An ice cream freezer with exotic flavors is there to keep the kids happy-flavors aren't too outlandish. read more

I come to Mattoon for work a few times a year and try to stick with the local places. I tried Del Sol this time and give it a resounding meh. Mexican food lends itself to assembly line kitchen practice, you can tell that is the norm here. I got seated and served quickly, the girls at the door are really friendly and helpful. The waiter I had seemed a little indifferent and I only saw him one other time, when he gave me the check. My drink was refilled by one of the girls at the door coming by after seating someone. I don't think any of the buss or delivery guys speak any English. As a test, I ordered pollo potosino and some guacamole. Getting back to the assembly line, the guacamole was the consistency of thick soup and a little warm, it was hand made but not recently. The pollo came very fast, was covered with half melted and half crumbled cheese, and was very salty, which means they probably use canned gravy. On the other hand I had to salt both the guacamole and salsa for flavor. My tortillas were cold, as was the rice. If I hadn't ordered something that required a grilled piece, I doubt anything on the plate would have passed the board of health temperature regulations. On the bright side the dining area is very bright and clean, and a lot of people were drinking and having a good time. If you want somewhere to go with friends for a drink come here. I come from an area where we have a lot of very good mom and pop mexican restaurants and I don't think this one would survive long there. read more

Overpriced barely mediocre food, the only two things on the buffet worth eating was the strawberry cake and the cheese dip and chips. Plus they put a huge hold on your debit card for a lot more than your purchase price. I won't return. read more

Excellent food and outstanding service. It is the best Mexican place in town. The salsa is fresh and seasoned perfectly. The strawberry margaritas are tasty. Pollo Ranchero is my favorite dish. We love coming here with the kids because the service is so fast. It is very family friendly. We eat here at least 1x per week. read more
