I feel like this place is dying out so I'm writing this. But they have EVERYTHING here. They have their homemade soups and salads and bowls or whatever, everyone is so nice that I feel drawn back to say hi again. I go here for ice cream sometimes, and on special occasions I get their old fashioned candy. You could do your weekly shopping here. I have passed Donelan's for years and have never been in, but I was heading home around 2:30 after doing errands and I was really hungry. While I really wanted - and needed - something that was "real lunch food" (i.e. something filling, like a sandwich) I wandered around and didn't feel like fruit. I saw a couple of pre-made sandwiches in the deli area, but nothing appealed to me and I was drawn back to the bakery area. You know those nice and big slices of cake that grocery stores have that sometimes have a lot of frosting? They have them, and it had A LOT of frosting and that's when I knew a day of healthy eating would be pushed to another day. Found a nice big slice of white cake and that frosting looked soooo good. I looked around for a fork because I wanted to dive into it in the parking lot, but that needed to wait until I got home. One minute through the self-checkout lane and I was off, and hurried home to get my sugar rush. It was delicious, and there was so much frosting that I didn't eat all of it (probably a first for me). After wandering the aisles, the prices seemed the same to me as those that I normally pay in Newton at Star Market, so I may need to pick up some actual food the next time I am driving by! The worst customer service by far by any grocery store. I literally bought butter last night packaged and bagged. My wife called me on the way home to tell me she already bought it. I went back to the store right away and they refused to refund my money. I never had a return issue with any other grocery store chain. Even perishables. The manger should be embarrassed. Did not even try to accommodate me in any way. She could not care less. read more

Bakery service is horrible. I called early on a Thursday morning and asked if they had any sheet cakes available. NOT a special order, just any flavor sheet cake that I could write a greeting on for an impromptu office party. The bakery representative said they had no sheet cakes available. Zero. (this is hardly an exotic item for a supermarket bakery). Since she didn't bother to offer any alternative I asked what else they had in the store. She said they have 6" and 8" cakes but didn't even bother to describe the items, how many servings, flavor, etc. The 2 star rating is for poor customer service and poor product availability. Overpriced groceries at average quality. Have come home from shopping with cheese that I discovered was moldy and similar issues there a few times. Also they shortened their hours during Covid and never expanded them back outward. Also they discontinued paper bags with handles and have had ones without handles for a long time now. so I guess that is a permanent decision. it's extremely annoying and makes carrying your groceries very difficult! At their sky high prices they should at least give customers handles on their bags. read more

Donelans is my favorite store to shop at. It's a manageable size, rarely has lines and the employees are kind. The meat department is fantastic-especially their ground beef! Some of their produce choices are limited though and it is more expensive so I don't do my big weekly shop there... unless it's been a doozy of a week and I need a easy, calm experience. Their internet ordering/curbside is good but you can't pick your time slot until you are done the ordering so sometimes I get through the whole process and then my time slot is gone, so I can't do it. Also the site makes you increase (slowly) in 0.25 pound increments for meat and fruit so if you want a 3lb family pack... that's a lot of clicks! read more

This is a small local store with some good buys. The flyer comes in the mail so if it is on my way I will stop by to pick up the sale items. I've had questions about the meat but haven't always been able to find help. This is a nice alternative to the others. I'll need to go more often to feel more comfortable and get a better pulse on the prices. read more

Smaller grocery store that caters to the local population. They have an excellent produce department, and though small, their meats are very good quality. They will special order meat for you. Prices are reasonable (better than Stop and Shop) especially for the top sellers. read more

Coming here made me feel like I was in the 80's, but it was actually enjoyable. Living in a town similar to Wayland, it would be so nice having a local market like this. It's small, condensed, but also perfect convenience wise. Sometimes convenience stores just don't suit my needs and then I have to go to the one of the gigantic grocery stores in my town. Wayland in general has a good scene of grocery stores including this one, Stop&Shop, and Whole Foods. This one is the best for a few quick things, and when you are on a time crunch. The employees are fast, the store isn't very busy, and while some aisles are tiny, they still have enough space for carts. For the size of the store, the designer set it up perfectly, and each department has a decent amount of space. The deli is fast and looks appealing and they have some good sales throughout the store. Maybe not the cheapest supermarket out there, but less than some. For pricing, I'd but them on par with Stop&Shop, except for the fact that less sale tags were present. Still, they beat any convenience store's prices any day. Plus, the store is in great condition : clean, organized and fully stocked! Mary at the register was friendly and the storefront is inviting and friendly. Lots of greenery surrounding the parking lot too. Very calm and enjoyable area in general. I would come back if I were in need of something specific and in this area. Good spot for Wayland and Natick residents to do some "quick-shopping". 4 stars for Donelan's. read more

While the prices here are a little on the higher side, the kind staff and friendly, neighborhood grocery store feel gets you every time. On top of that, they have an awesome deli counter with possibly the most amazing sandwiches I've ever had. Their take on the Italian sub, aptly named "The Roman" is terrific but my all time favorite is "The Mess" corn beef, pastrami, lettuce, Swiss cheese and spicy brown mustard. Just awesome. Stopped here on my way through town and I was impressed. Aisles a little cramped but most fellow shoppers I ran into were polite unlike most larger chain stores. Prices a little higher but not by much 50 cents here or a dollar something there.. Nice produce selection and organic section as well as a large wine section for yall winos. I would probably return but just to get a few specific items between shopping trips at my usual places. read more

I love the small market feel of this store they have a good selection of beer/wine, seafood, meat, and produce . There cheese section I also surprisingly good for a small shop. There bakery department could use a boost. I have found some of there baked goods to be dry. Great for grabbing those few things you forget or if your willing to pay more than say shaws or stop and shop, you could easily do your weekly shopping here. read more

Clean, friendly, bright, well-stocked, and overflowing with New England wholesomeness, Donelan's is a nice local alternative to Shaw's and Stop & Shop. I can't say that I've ever done more than pick up a few items on my way back to Boston after dinner at J. J. McKay's but for a small, independent chain that sticks to the foofier 'burbs, the prices were surprisingly on par with the bigger chains--and Donelan's didn't waste my time with a stupid loyalty card, either. read more

I'm amazed at all the "good service" reviews here. I shop here out of convenience because of location, but I always dread checkout. All the checkers look angry or depressed to be working there, and are not friendly or helpful. Any time I bring a legitimate coupon, I'm always given a hard time. Sometimes I'd rather just pay more money for a pleasant shopping experience at Whole Foods. That said, the selection is decent and the store is clean. Can't really say much else. read more

This place is a wonderful alternative to the massive foreign owned chain supermarkets. They may not have as many items as the big stores but, the manager, Nate will do his best to get something in for you. I try not to shop at chain restaurants, grocery stores, hardware stores etc... I am glad that Donelans is in Cochituate. Everybody is friendly there and like the previous post said, they don't use loyalty cards. Which I think is a scam just to get more information about you. So today I had the worst customer service in my life. I come here pretty often for snacks since I work very near and I usually have good experiences. The cashiers are usually very nice. Today a lady with curly hair and glasses was so rude to me. She didn't wanna pack my things and she threw the bag at me when I asked her if I should bag it myself. I truly hope the manager or supervisor talks to her so she can do her job right. I really like the other workers. But this experience makes me not wanna go back to get treated like trash. read more

I went here over the weekend to pick up a couple of party wheels along with some other grocery items. I think it would be nice to live around here. The selection was smaller than at, like, Shaw's but it had everything on my list and shopping here was like how I imagine it must've been like in the good old days. In the soda aisle, the bottles were lined up on their shelves and turned so their labels were facing out. The man working the deli counter was prepared to help and did not seem put out at all when I walked up with a question. At checkout the cashier and the bagger said have a nice day. I will come here when my nerves are raw from shopping at, like, Hannaford, where a cashier got very peeved with me because the credit card terminal froze up while I was using it (Lady: "You have to press OK." Me: "I did, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything." Lady: *big sigh*). read more

Just got a wrap there that was made to look nice and meaty on the cross section, thing (and I'm not even exaggerating) was completely empty minus the first bite. This wrap made for a better fleshlight than it did a sandwich. Now I'm hungry and jacked up on excedrine, I honestly might cancel my upcoming vacation to picket the front of this store with blown up pictures of this horrendous wrap. I hope the pennies saved were worth it because I've instructed all my family and friends to never shop here again, which they wholeheartedly agreed after I showed them the wrap. I have shopped at Donelan's for many years and live nearby. I will never go back. I had a simple request-to ring up a Turkey at the price per pound that was on the sign in the meat section. They were rude, looked at me like I was the problem. I have noticed over the years how poorly the young managers treat their cashiers. The culture is sour and there was no reason to make me feel that I was the problem. The situation could have been fixed easily with a small amount of courtesy and customer service. From now on, I'll take the extra time to go to the large market near by and save myself some money and avoid the nasty attitude. read more

I like how much organic food this place carries, especially for such a small store! The staff are quite friendly and helpful, the prices are reasonable, and if I request an item, they will start carrying it. They even sell organic wine, which is delicious! I am giving four stars because I really wish they had even more organic options (they have organic produce, mostly). But overall, a very good neighborhood store. read more
