A gem! Not too fancy from the outside ... but when you step inside, you're transported to a smaller version of those typical Cantonese bakeries you see all over Hong Kong. Their da'an tat were unexpectedly GOOD. (They have two differently crusted da'an tat for sale). They make small sponges, coconut tarts (excellent), lovely taro buns, glazed char sieu bao (hard to find the glazed version) and the usual Cantonese baked delights. Very reasonable pricing. In fact, the most inexpensive high-quality Cantonese baked goods I have purchased in a long time. Not a fancy-shmantzy place but true to Hong Kong tradition in their very authentic and delicious products. Nice man behind the counter. I can't tell you when they last time I saw Chinese bakery goods for this cheap. There's a decent selection of buns, and they were all made fresh! The break was the perfect sweetness and paired with their davoury counterparts well. Our fave was the custard pineapple bun. There was so much custard inside, I was surprised! Been here a few times, decided today to show up at their 0800 opening to get some baos for my friend's garage sale. Nothing was displayed yet but the owner who was in their back kitchen and was kind enough to quickly gather up their freshly baked baos/buns. Yeah. That's right, they actually bake their own baos/buns in the back kitchen. They keeping it real, got my 100% support. Timmies crying in their tear soaked pillow Got an assortment of char Siu, pineapple buns, ham & cheese, and custard buns. Their char siu baos have plenty of shredded BBQ pork with a hint of minced onions. Pineapple buns have a large crunchy crust, can also get them with filled custard. If you buy 6 or more, no 13% tax charged They by far have the cheapest bao/bun prices when compared to other places. Stumbled upon this place with a whiny 4 year old who didn't want to eat wonton noodle. This place is gem. The pineapple bun were 2 for $1.60, which is insane value. We bought the whole tray and we really enjoyed them. They individually packed the pastry and seal them if they are not hot. If the pastry is still hot, they won't seal it. Came near the end of day so selection was limited but I was happy with what was left: pineapple buns, egg tarts (both flakey and shortcrust), and lots of different flavoured Swiss roll cakes. The price was lower than most other bakeries, although the buns seem a bit smaller? I am generally a sucker for mom and pop shops like this because everything is homogenized and sold in chains nowadays so one roots for independents that sells non-standard items. Dong Dong is a pastry shop and bakery. They have the standard items like egg tarts and coconut buns and a couple of other items like chicken pie buns and winter melon buns. They also sell loaves of bread and Japanese cheesecake. In the case of the latter, they display the Philadelphia Cheese containers in their fridge just to prove to you that they are using Uncle Tetsu's recipe! The prices are cheap. Egg tarts, which are better at BC and Lucullus, are 60 or 70 cents each depending on whether one buys the regular or cookie crust (the regular is better) and other items are approximately $1 each. The coconut tarts are fluffy and light. Winter melon tarts are good. I find their pastries fresh. The cute girl at the counter is pretty non-responsive and cannot articulate a 'you are welcome' or 'thank-you,' but that is generally the attitude at all these places. The mascot on the business card seems friendlier. The shop does have two bare bone tables, but is completely lacking in charm so consider it a take-out bakery only. On the other hand, good luck finding parking in this plaza. I am thinking of quitting my job and instead occupying parking spots here, which I would then vacate for the cars endlessly circling this plaza for a mere $100. read more

After grabbing some wonton noodles at JCK, I stumbled upon this place...without reading any reviews. I'm alright with Chinese buns, both sweet/savoury, and I do have my favourites. However, for the most part, I just try not to eat them that much 'cause they're soo abundant and I get sick of them. Plus, they're not conducive to staying trim! Anyway, I was surprised about the prices. Has it been this long since I've actually purchased Chinese buns? Was I in some kinda time-warp? As per my photo, Dan Tats (Chinese egg tarts) were $0.60/$0.70. That's pretty cheap, considering the Portuguese version is like at least $1! Other buns were ~$0.70/0.80 which is also quite good. So far, I just tried the Coconut Tart and it was very good. Fresh, moist, and not dry and overly sweet like a lot of places! The key though in the buns is that they're eaten FRESH. So don't be a hog and buy a bunch of them when you're not gonna eat it right away! read more

A hidden gem! They have a lot of stuff I don't see at other chinese bakeries such as curry beef puff pastry and chicken pie! They are delicious! They have cookie crust and flaky egg tarts which are both delicious. Their prices are slightly cheaper than other bakeries and when you buy 6 buns no tax. Dong Dong is a chinese bakery, drowning in a sea of similar bakeries. Finding a chinese bakery in Markham/Richmond Hill, is like finding a pair of shoes at Aldo.. They are everywhere. Dong Dong is located in an all asian plaza. What maks Dong Dong stick out from other bakeries are that they have pineapple buns (sweet dough buns with a crispy sweet topping which makes it look like a pineapple) all day, 3 for $1. Considering at other chinese bakeries they go for around $0.70 a pop, it's a pretty sweet deal. When eaten fresh, they taste amazing. Other than that, they have the usual other buns, coconut buns, ham & egg, cookies, cakes and other chinese dessert delights. The quality of their buns are in the middle of the pack.. We came here thanks to an article posted on the wall of Jim Chai Kee noodles after our wonton lunch. They carry both savoury and sweet Chinese pastries. Grab a tray and some tongs by the door to self serve pastries from small trays. Put the pastries right on the trays - they will wrap them up for you at the register. We tried the coconut tart (recommended in article at Jim Chai Kee), a coconut and cream bun and a box of small almond cookies. All for $3.50 and all tasty! My favourite was the coconut tart - it's a coconut-cake-substance filled tart crust. The coconut cream bun was a sweet bread roll with coconut cream in the middle, the almond cookies were your standard Chinese almond cookies. All tasty and they really hit the spot after our noodle bowls. Great place to pop in after a meal for something a little more than a fortune cookie. read more

This used to be my go to bakery. Then one time, I bought half dozen egg tarts to bring over to my boyfriend's house. I got there around 11am and noticed they didn't have any out. I asked when they were getting a new batch as I had a bit of time to wait. The lady told me she had some in the back and will pack it for me. All is good, she goes to the back, returns with a sealed box and I pay. When I got to my boyfriend's and opened the box, all the egg tarts were burnt! Not just the bottoms... They were brown and visibly overcooked. I can't believe they had the decency to pack it for me thinking I wouldn't notice. They lost me and my family as regulars after that day. The bread here isn't anything amazing but you get what you pay for. Very light, and doesn't feel like you actually ate much afterwards. There are other bakeries out there with higher quality and won't trick you into paying for burnt egg tarts! read more

This is one of the best Chinese bakeries in the GTA. A bit of a hidden gem, the place isnt all new/shiny, but their buns/pastries are so fresh and they use a great recipe for their dough that is always chewy, moist and sweet-but-not-too-sweet... Just like how you'd expect and hope for any Chinese bun to be! Their buns are such a good price too. Been going here for over 15 years and keep coming back after trying other bakeries. This place deserves way more hype. read more

I'm no expert or anything..but I think Dong Dong is one of the best Chinese bun places around. The buns are much better than the ones at T&T for instance, and much cheaper than Chatime. So that's why I'm a fan. read more
