The Origin is a bit sad these days. I was here last Saturday, taking in a flick at the Cineplex. This mall has seen better days. These major players are no longer at this mall: - South Street Burger with La Diperie - Me Va Me Express - Kiu Japanese Restaurant After the movie was over, I felt like a drink. Chatime is still around. However, there must have been fifteen people in the store, waiting for their drinks. I remembered this Lucullus bakery that was next door to the late South Street Burger. I had never been to this location in downtown Markham. I have been to the one on Yonge Street, south of Finch Avenue West. That store had beverages, so I'm sure that this one did, too. You enter and exit using the external doors. You cannot access the mall through this bakery. I opened the door. I was not expecting to walk into a time warp. It felt old-world European, in a period that I was unfamiliar with, but it felt like I knew it instantly being here. I loved the small tiffany lamps that were in front of the coffee area. So quaint! I hit the bakery section. I got a tray that oddly looked far more modern than the interior. I also got a pair of tongs. Just past 6 pm, I was expecting slim pickings with the baked goods offerings. Surprisingly, there were a number of croissants and buns available. My haul consisted of these items: - Curry beef puff - Tuna bao - Chocolate croissant - Luncheon meat bao - Corn and ham bao - Beef bao These six items barely fit on my wooden tray. I found the drinks. They were in the fridge. I got a chrysanthemum flower honey tea. I approached the counter. I got a helpful woman. She asked me if I needed a bag. I said yes. I hadn't expected to come here to get a bunch of baked goods and a drink. I'm glad that I did. I got a straw for my drink. I paid with a credit card. There was a 25-cent transaction charge when you use your debit or credit card here. It didn't bother me, as I rarely have cash on hand. I thanked her, took my bag of yumminess and my drink, and headed to the elevators to fetch my car in the underground lot. I'll start with the chrysanthemum flower honey tea. It's exceptionally Chinese. I grew up sipping it when I had a sore throat. I loved how it tasted. It had the perfect tea strength with a touch of honey. The downside was that the flower in this tea was a choking hazard when I sucked it through the straw. I ended up straining my drink at home to prevent myself from coughing up a lung again. I loved my baked goods haul. Everything was delicious. Thoughts about each one: - Curry beef puff - Flaky. It had the best curry beef filling. - Tuna bao - A lot of tuna filling. Tasty! - Chocolate croissant - It was divine with dark chocolate. It does have black sesame seeds on it. - Luncheon meat bao - Yummy. It would be better if it had egg paired with it. - Corn and ham bao - So good! It had a lot of corn balanced with the salty ham cubes, mixed with mayo. - Beef bao - It was delicious that I took a bite and didn't think about taking a photo of the bao in its intact glory. A definite bao winner. I'd return for more good eats. This store apparently has meals that I'd like to try. I have to say that the space itself is quite beautiful. I've never been inside, I've walked past this place many times. What I found odd was the fact they didn't have any real coffee beverages available. They call themselves "Roasters" but the only thing they are roasting is drip coffee and Asian milk teas and teas. They said no cappuccino, latte, macchiato, cafe au lait...none of them were available. What kind of weird bakery and roasters is this? It was completely bizarre. Went there at lunch time on a Friday to get some stuffs because one of my brother liked that place that much that he begged for me to get pineapple buns and egg tarts. There weren't that much buns stock left or nothing was refilled for the lunch rush at 12 pm ??? Huge line up of people waiting - with only one person working, manning the cash registrar making drinks and packing the items ?!!? For a Friday afternoon lunch rush ?!? The owner of Lucullus bakery is so freaking frugal. Can't they like have more staff during the busy lunch hours? The lady packed my buns individually and didn't give me a big bag to take them. Does she expect me to hold 6 individual buns to go??? If I wanted a big plastic bag, it would be extra 15 cents Also Extra charge to use debit and credit card I think 15 cents for debit and 25 cents for cc No napkins on site. If want napkins, need to go up to the only staff and ask ??? Portions for their hot meals are also small and yet still pricey. A huge space to sit down. Lots of chairs and table. We visited both the location inside the Markville mall and one of their outside bakeries near highway 7. This place is solid! Te pastries are so fresh and presented in a clean fashion. They are generous in sizing and tastes really good! We also enjoyed their ready-made rice places from the mall, but also the frozen ones we bought to prepare at home. That salted egg yolk is to die for! Don't forget to drizzle the prepared soy sauce...soooo good! We loved this place and can't wait to go back. read more

Since the move to Markham, I get to explore a lot of Asian bakeries in the area, and one of them is Lucullus Bakers & Roasters. I particularly love this location because of the upscale decor, and the quality buns. Hands down, I love the texture of their buns and they also have the BEST bbq pork bun of all Asian bakeries - none of that sus bright red sauce you normally see that other bakeries lol. Other than quality buns, this location also offers 9.95 breakfast combos! My mom asked me to take her here for breakfast one morning. She devoured the pasta w/ ham in cream chicken soup, pineapple bun w/ butter, and a coffee x milk tea drink all to herself. I obviously had a bbq pork bun muahaha. I'll come back another day to try their breakfast next time :) P.S. It is extra 0.50 for a plastic bag when you buy lots of buns, so remember to bring your own bag! read more

I heard there was a nice combo breakfast meal that is pretty good value here so I came to check it out with my dad. The bakery is in a pretty inconspicuous spot, in a corner of the Markham Cineplex block, I myself missed the entrance at first as it was dark and the main door is covered with curtains. When you walk in, the bakery is quite large inside and you line up to order. They will give you a number and you can find a table to sit at. The combo breakfast meal comes in 2 options with many different variations to choose from. My dad and I each got one option: - Breakfast Light: Scrambled eggs with toast, and my main of choice was sausage. A bit misleading because the image was one breakfast sausage but instead I got a bunch of mini ones... but honestly I liked it better the way mine was served. The eggs were typical HK breakfast food. I was a bit disappointed by the toast, I was expecting milk bread but it was more similar to the white bread you get at the grocery. The coffee on the side was quite watery. Overall, considering the price, I would still come back again. The value is great and very impressed by how many options you can choose from! 7/10 - Breakfast Combo 1+2+3: For this combo, my dad chose a pineapple bun with butter, and ham macaroni in their signature milk chicken broth. The pineapple bun was delicious but the butter was a pretty small slice. The macaroni was really interesting, the soup was a refreshing departure from the regular MSG soup you get at HK cafes. The milk tea on the side was fine as well. 8/10 Overall, I think this is a great place to have a nice breakfast. It can be hard to get a seat during peak hours. But I envision this being a perfect spot to grab something before heading to the movies or doing anything else in the area. The menu offers hot and cold beverages, a breakfast and a lunch menu, Chinese bakery items and a limited menu of dim sum for dine-in or take out. You shop and bring your tray of items to pay at the counter. Hot beverages are ordered at the counter. There is a minimum credit card fee. I visited with a friend on a Wednesday afternoon at the end of the lunch hour and we stayed about two hours. I liked that we were not rushed out. We both ordered a hot beverage from the Honey Collection: Honey, ginger and lemon tea Honey, chrysanthemum tea which I had. It had a generous amount of chrysanthemum leaves and I appreciated the authentic chrysanthemum leaves, however it was difficult to drink it without a tea leaf filter to keep the leaves in the cup. Beautiful interior to eat your classic buns in! This location of Lucullus is definitely one of the nicer ones. The interior is gives off an old school vibe, and the floor tiles have a beautiful pattern. You can grab your buns on your tray, bring it to the cash and grab a seat to sit, or do a grab and go take out style altogether. They also have hot dim sum dishes that you can order to dine in or take out. When you first walk into the business, you get a big waft of fresh baked bread. There's the usual classic buns like hot dog bun, bbq pork bun, pineapple bun etc. They also have egg tarts, croissants and more specialty buns available as well. Tax free if you get 6 or more items. The classics are always great and doesn't disappoint, especially when it's piping hot and fresh! The classic HK style milk tea was nothing special and would probably pass on this next time. But would come back for more bread! The establishment is busy and had lots of people sitting at their tables enjoying their bread before noon so expect there to be a little bit of a wait! I've been here a few times. It's hidden outside the mall and can only be accessed from the outside of enterprise mall. There is plenty of parking here. They serve Chinese buns from price range $3 and up. You can also get a hot meal that typical HK cafes serve. The pricing here is above average, but the food is pretty fresh. I've tried almost all their rice meals and I like them all but my favourite rice dishes are spare ribs in black bean sauce and minced beef. 2.5 stars We've been back a couple of times recently and found that the quality of the pastries does not match the price. The average cost per item is much higher than other similar Chinese bakeries but what you get for it is of lesser value. To name a few issues: the curry bun was just too salty with no flavour, the donut bun that cost more was essentially a plain bun with a sprinkling of sugar on top, and the coffee lacked flavour and tasted watered down. It's unlikely we'll be coming back when there's so many other Chinese bakeries around. read more

I had mixed thoughts with Lucullus. The bakery was very nice. It was one of the nicest Chinese bakeries that I've ever stepped foot in. It just felt nice being in there. We tried some of their buns and their crab sandwich. The buns were okay. I thought they were kind of firm. I've had better. The crab sandwich was delicious. It was full of crab according to the woman working there. Buying stuff and taking it across the street to the hotel was probably my mistake as the nice interior design probably would've made it taste better. We ordered their torched hong kong style cheesecake for my mom's birthday. For 8inches it was $43. I recommend calling ahead as it looked like they don't make a lot of counter cakes for this store in particular (or it was all sold out by the time we went). They also offer your typical hong kong style baos, and some other interesting items like floral teas that provide added health benefits. The interior of this place is super cute and a great place to sit and eat your bao or lunch. The cake was good, but I felt like it wasn't as creamy as I remember it from before. I hardly tasted the torch aspect of the cake and felt the crumbly base was a little too strong tasting for my liking. It kind of overpowered the entire cream cheese part of the cake. I may be a little biased as I grew up eating chinese buns and milk tea on a regular basis. This is one of my favorite bakeries and I love how modern and inviting this location is. I used to work right across the street and it was nice to see people from other cultures enjoy the coconut buns too. :) Great spot to hang out or get their lunch specials, which are pretty satisfying and includes a drink. I would recommend their coconut bear claw bun, curry steamed rice, and the cold lemon tea with less sugar as the regular one is way too sweet. Cash is the preferred form of payment, as there is extra charge for debit cards. Personally, I am used to this as many local asian cafes around here only take cash too. It would be nice if they do start accepting credit in the future to make it more convenient for others. The bakery at Markville accepts credit, but I prefer Lucullus so would hate for them to lose business over it. One star off for service as it wouldn't hurt to get a smile from the staff once in a while. read more

The actual place is a nice little HK styled bakery with a variety of buns, a bit of hot foods available, and some hot drinks! For me, I got one of their cheese and butter croissants ($1.45), the 'pizza' sausage bun ($2.45), one of the glutinous rice dumplings (2.45), and a medium milk tea ($2.99?). Overall the food was decent and the medium milk tea was a pretty large cup and good. However, if you couldn't tell the prices are a bit more expensive than what I would usually pay for Chinese styled bakery buns. It is a bit pricey for what they do yet I can't say their food was anything especially stand out. It might just be a location pricing but you can get similar buns for a bit cheaper just 10-15 minutes drive away. read more

I absolutely adore this place!! Fresh buns, HK milk tea, and the perfect 老婆餅 (winter melon paste cake) has won my heart!! From eating the many 老婆餅 in different bakeries, I would have to say that Lucullus has THE BEST 老婆餅 IN TOWN!!!! I highly recommend getting one when you're here!!! Pre-COVID-19, I loved coming here to relax and maybe even get some work done with their HK milk tea and fresh bun--you could request for the bun to be heated if you'd like! The 老婆餅 is almost a-must for me and I love sharing it with a friend--too many calories and too indulgent just to have it by myself! Even during COVID-19, I still love coming to get their buns and egg tarts. The buns are individually bagged, which makes me feel safe when I buy. But the egg tarts are still grab on your own... It makes me feel a bit uneasy when I buy the egg tart, but I just bring it home and heat it in my oven, I prefer eating it hot anyways! Lucullus is a little more expensive than other Hong Kong Style bakery in the area. I had the black sesame walnut mochi ($1.95) from Lucullus. The ratio of rice ball and filling is slightly off. Overall, it is still a decent treat. There are many dessert option in the case. With that said, they are all refrigerated. I really wish they are able to warm it up, especially for the cold winter weather. But the staff said it is only served cold. read more

The mini muffins I got looked like they were falling apart, not sure why, all the packages on the table looked like that. Fingers crossed it was just a weird batch, they tasted fine though. I would stay away from the cake slices as they were not the freshest and charged a premium. Service is fast but you know they are really cutting corners. They have traditional Chinese pastries here (pineapple bun, curry buns, etc..) but the thing I absolutely love are their egg tarts and cheese tarts! I've always been a flaky egg tart kind of girl and always hated on cookie egg tarts...but I love the cookie shell here! As for their cheese tarts... THEY ARE SOO GOOD! The texture of the filling is light and it isn't too sweet - it also has the right amount of saltiness and sourness to balance everything out. Not sure why but I feel like this location is not as good as the older locations. Price wise (as with all other locations) i find them to be rather steep, perhaps it's because they became more popular as this shop appeared in downtown markham and having the head Baker featured on food network a while back. I do stand by their pineapple bun as I believe Lucullus makes one of the better ones. In terms of this location, though, I only give it 3 stars (vs 4 for the other two) because they seem to be smaller in size and I do find the flavours to be less authentic at this location. Still enjoy their steam rice dishes, especially the Chinese meat pie one. I think it's quite worth the price. Definitely do not skimp out on the sweet soy sauce as that heightens the flavours of the rice for sure. I also enjoy their spare ribs and the preserved meat rice. read more

This is definitely one of my favourite HK style bakeries in Markham. They have a huge selection of chinese buns, snacks, cakes and drinks and the interior decor is very chic (not like your typically asian bakery). They are most known for their egg tarts and pineapple buns (with butter), and of course their milk tea! They also have a huge selection of steamed rice boxes and some dim sum available (while quantities last daily as they sell out quite fast in the first half of the day)! I love coming here for lunch and just grabbing a rice box because it also comes with a small milk tea. I usually get the Curry Chicken or the Satay Beef rice boxes as my go-to! They have a lot of seating area as well where you can enjoy your milk tea and buns in the cafe. Their pineapple buns are best enjoyed in the cafe especially if you get the warmed and buttered (Bo-lo-yao) option! It is a must try and best paired with a hot cup of HK-style milk tea. I often go here to grab lunch and they have various rice sets available ($7.95 before tax) and it comes with a hot beverage. Their curry chicken with rice is very popular and usually sells out by mid-afternoon. I wish they accepted credit card payments, often times you see customers caught by surprise that they don't accept it, but overall it's one of the higher end bakeries you would find in Markham. WHY DO YOU HATE ME" Attempt # 4 *pull*, door opens, immediately falls inside and thanks god above on high #blessings Once I made it past the door level, dried my frozen tears from my cheeks, and let my glasses defog, it was only then that I could take in the quaint French Cafe vibe of Lucullus AND I understood why all the doors, cuz in the summertime... it's open to the outside Parisian cafe style... (ohhhhhhhhhhh). Cruising around inside I was thoroughly impressed with their selection of both traditional French and Chinese pastries and bread. To fairly review them I had to pick something familiar as a basis for comparison and picked up a Pain au Chocolate (Chocolate croissant) and paired it with a black coffee. The Croissant was massive, light, airy and fluffy. However, the dough was lacking in the distinct buttery texture and flavour that melts in your mouth when tearing into a fresh croissant. Instead, I found it slightly sweet but a little more on the bland side. Still tasty and visually stunning (you know from the Yelp.. and the gram). The coffee was nice and paired nicely, however, the teeny tiny diner-style cups were sad and spilt easily and honestly didn't do much to match the classy French aesthetic going here. So why a three? A Three-star average means A-OK. Nothing was bad, but nothing knocked my socks off either. The x-factor which faltered a bit here, which is kinda become typical for certain businesses in Markham, was the standoffish, seemingly disengaged staff. Again, a place putting all this effort into an exceptional product should encourage staff to be part of that product - I honestly get more personality from the folks at Tim Hortons and their croissants are ONLY made with butter. This rating is an average based on all my visits and purchases there thus far. Service 2.5/5 Persistence is the key. I went to order a fathers day cake and the woman that assisted us told us it was impossible to order that day and my only options are what's out in the fridge even before allowing me to provide her with the type of cake I was looking for. After asking again, she decided to call the other branch, and it turned out that ordering my desired cake was possible. Napoleon Cake 3/5 The presentation look really nice and generous, however, my recollection of the cake was = sugar + nuts + sugar + strawberry. My favorite milk tea spots are Marathon, Lucullus, and Phoenix Cafe. Marathon leans more on the acidic side. Lucullus and Phoenix milk teas are more milky and rounded out so it doesn't have an acidic aftertaste lingering in your mouth afterwards. It's not just their milk tea that's delicious, their egg tarts, their spinach pasta, their strawberry napoleon, jumbo siu mai (with a little hill of fish roe on top), mochis, and lava cheese tarts are all worth trying. I normally buy multiple black sesame and walnut mochis when I go but if you do, be sure to eat them within a day because the texture starts to taste a bit off. One time I ordered the siu mai, an iced milk tea, and the lava cheese tart as I waited for my friend and the cashier told me those 3 are their best items. This is a chinese bakery but with a nice atmosphere. It is nicely decorated to make it resemble like a European cafe. Their prices are more expensive than the Richmond Hill location but it is in a business district afterall. They have a variety of Chinese baked goods, dim sum, rice combos and hot/cold beverages. read more
